It was legal initially because if you really think about it, the stage truly isn't random. The stage follows a preset path and everything is the exact same everytime you play it. It changes but it doesn't do so unpredictably. It was only banned because of that 1 wall on the boat part because it was discovered Fox can infinite you against walls by just pressing 1 button. Nowadays with the competitive scene being much more optimized it would be banned because it isn't a neutral stage and greatly favors specific playstyles and characters in match defining ways, to the point where if a player knows how to game the stage they should theoretically never lose in certain matchups which doesn't exactly provide that balanced strike of the air of competition nature where skill triumphs all.

The absolute worst is the 75m DK stage. It's so big and the platforms are all so small, and it's annoying to move around because you always get stuck on the ladders, most of the time by accident. There are no good places to fight because the only areas with enough room also have those annoying springs.
I have one annoying friend who always just hides in the bottom left corner until I come battle her to then push me of the platform... Rinse and repeat...
Honestly the bigger stages are pretty damn fun if you focus on items (set to appear a lot) and have a range battle. The feeling of hitting someone far away with a bobomb is amazing.
They actually couldn't bring back pac maze. The reason why it was 3ds exclusive was because you could see the ghosts turn blue on your screen only if you ate the power pellet.

Yeah, I misread the wiki about Klaptrap. They specifically mentioned that Klaptraps swim by every 10 seconds in Brawl and I took that to mean that he only shows up in Brawl.

The worst part about Orbital Gate Assault is that it took 1 year to make 1 YEAR To put this into perspective smash 4 was in development for about two years. That means it took half of their development time to make one stage that never got played on. To make things worse it isn't even coming back for Ultimate, Thereby wasting an entire YEAR of development.

I actually don't hate Great Cave Offensive, I kind of like how the lava will insta-kill you if you have over 100% of damage, it makes for a fun concept. I think Palutena's Temple is much less enjoyable than Great Cave Offensive. Also I'm Surprised you didn't mention Wily Castle and that Stupid Yellow Devil...
I personally like moving stages. It adds tension and forces you to stay on your toes and always pay attention. I feel like I'm alone on this one. I didn't have Meelee but Icicle mountain looks super annoying though.
I know he mentioned in the video that moving stages take away from the core gameplay, but I think that's what I like most about them--it takes the tools you are given and gives you a new thing to do with them. Sure, you're going to be focusing less on fighting and more on making it through Pac-Land, but all that means is that you have a different objective, which doesn't have to be a bad thing.
I love the moving stages . It just makes game play so unpredictable and totally wild. This is what I love about Smash Bros I don't get this experience with other games in this genre
Surprised Great Cave Offensive made it in over Palutena's Temple. At least GCO makes an effort to kill you, with the lava that equals instadeath everywhere. You ever try doing a one-on-one at Palutena's Temple? That's the absolute worst Smash has ever gotten for me
Out of the whole list this is what frustrates me the most the camera angles for GCO If you have 6-8 players on screen then your view is restricted to the size of an ant farm, If there are 1-4 the camera gets in so close you can not see the lava pitfalls, To me this is the worst stage ever. All the other ones I'm OK with just SMB in overdrive. Surprised Big Blue Brawl stage isn't there I take advantage of sending my opponents straight into the concrete. (and if they survive they get dragged by the stage until they are out.)
As someone who mostly plays competitively I think Orbital Gate Assault is really overhated. Yes it's chaotic and there's a lot going on, but isn't that what free for alls are all about? Besides it's not as unplayable as everyone makes it out to be, you can react to everything as long as you're paying attention. I think it's much more in your control than getting screwed over because your opponent got an OP item or final smash
Orbital gate assault feels much more uncontrollably deadly than any other stage. If your opponent gets a Hammer or a Smash Ball you think "Well, I could have grabbed it if I had been faster" or "I could have dodged that if I was better." Even though it clearly gives a huge advantage to your opponent, there's still some form of counterplay so you feel in control. Orbital Gate Assault's stage transitions are immediate and have almost no warning. Platforms just explode under your feet or vanish into the background, and if you didn't happen to be standing in the right place at the right time then you're dead with no saving throw. The warning animations are often imprecise or nonexistent - the spaceship is marked "target," but you don't have a good indication of how long before it explodes, or what platform you should jump to when it does. A lot of stages have deadly hazards. The Banzai Bill, the Voltorb in Saffron City, the giant lava wave in Norfair. You know what all of them have in common? They're obvious, marked with brightly visible warnings, and take several seconds before they blow you away. Because if they didn't do that, it would feel really unfair for you to die instantly.
I consider it one of the best stages in the series because it's a good size for 3 or more players, it's one of the only pre-4 stages fit for 4 or more players, & although it's made up of multiple large sections, the ways of getting from section to section are very limited so, if someone tries to run away, it's easy to chase them. Its large spaces also make for great item play. There's a good risk/reward thing going on too because the areas that make it easy to avoid damage are close to blast zones so they're useful at low percent but, at high percent, they're too risky which makes people wanna manipulate you into going to those areas so they can finish you off.
This YellowMadness fellow gets it. Geez. Since when is more space a bad thing? I get it if there's an entire stage length between player 1 and 2, like Palutena's Temple, but a little extra breathing room and ways to use items and stuff never hurt anyone. Except the babies who cannot use the stage to their advantage. Or people with working brains. Or people who hate everything under the sun. Or....

Hanenbow is not the only stage with unswimmable water in fact you mentioned the other one JUST before in the PacMan scrolling stage and even showcased it
From a spectacle standpoint, I think #10 on the list is the most amazing stage in smash history. It's such a great love letter to Star Fox. That being said, I know people do not like having to time the jumps when the missiles explode especially. Still easier to navigate flat diagonals like the Arwings than it is to traverse whatever shapes Poke Floats are.
Which are very unnatural shapes to move and fight on. And some of them are faster than the Aparoid missiles and Arwings in Orbital Gate Assault. The Unown for example. Then again, most people only remember the beginning of that stage with Squirtle and Onyx.
At least you can say that The Great Cave Offensive is appropriately named. It is indeed a Great- that is to say, a huge- Cave and I feel quite offended by it. Particularly when anyone thinks it's a good idea to play on it its original form.

Orbital Gate Assault was a blast in Sm4sh imo. It was even better when you watch two people who know it like the back of their hand duke it out on that stage with low item spawn. It was like an action movie. =Y

No where did I say that everyone watching had to dislike the stage, or that people who like the stage are wrong/stupid or anything of that sort. But since you bring it up, a quicker character with better jumps and projectiles is inherently better on a stage like this. That is a flaw and can be an issue for some players without being an issue for others, depending on what you want from a stage. For me, that's a problem.

I actually like some of the stages on this list. I don’t know, I guess I’m just more tolerant of these things than other people are. I’ve never played the Hanenbow stage though, since I never unlocked it. One of my least favorite stages is Norfair from Brawl because I didn’t enjoy having to run into a capsule to avoid the lava.

People that play the game competitively can still have fun with the game, and you're directly implying that we don't. It's not black and white, either - playing with items on and off are both enjoyable, it's just that there's a preference to remove the unfair variables every now and then.

My point was literally just that there is no such thing as a “casual” player, just someone who plays the game, as intended (as a party game). The distinction comes when people play competitively, which is what Sakurai didn’t specifically make Smash Bros. for (hence, why so many people got triggered when Brawl didn’t meet their insanely high competitive standards, and instead was more catered towards the rest of the fanbase).

Donkey Kong just has some terrible stages in general. Jungle Hijinx and Rumble Falls should have easily made this list along with the already listed 75m and Jungle Japes
Hannabow is one of those levels I love to hate. As a kid, It stood out to me as the visuals were quite enjoyable. I’m incredibly happy to see it return because it really brings even more nostalgia to the Ultimate game
Pretty sure the reason PAC-MAZE wasn't brought to Ultimate is BECAUSE its gimmick was designed for the perspectives of multiple 3DS systems. Since Ultimate can do multiplayer on the same screen, it wouldn't quite work out - I mean, wouldn't it be confusing for people to still be hurt by Ghosts that appear blue to them?
I bet when I get Ultimate, I'll have lots of fun on the side-scrolling and giant stages the game has. All of the side scrolling and giant stages seem to have absolutely no BS in my eyes.

I disagree completely, New Pork City looks amazing, not saying TGCO doesn't but it just doesn't look as good to me. Plus c'mon there's almost no way The Great Cave Offensive has better music than New Pork City.

Some of the big stages work pretty well for stamina battles too. They (generally) have pretty varied terrain and the huge blastzones don't matter when you don't need to knock someone off to KO them. Except 75M because that stage is just a train wreck.
The great cave offensive can be fun, but you gotta have 8+ players and have a high launch rate, and 20+ stocks it's just a lot of fun seeing people launch into walls and bounce around wildly Generally though, i wish they had split up these larger stages for 1-4 players, some of the smaller sections in some of these big stages can be fun to play on, just make them transform like castle siege or something

Yeah, those stages are definitely the best item stages overall. They are really great for dodging hard-to-avoid ATs and Pokemon. =Y

Surprised Great Cave Offensive made it in over Palutena's Temple. At least GCO makes an effort to kill you, with the lava that equals instadeath everywhere. You ever try doing a one-on-one at Palutena's Temple? That's the absolute worst Smash has ever gotten for me
Out of the whole list this is what frustrates me the most the camera angles for GCO If you have 6-8 players on screen then your view is restricted to the size of an ant farm, If there are 1-4 the camera gets in so close you can not see the lava pitfalls, To me this is the worst stage ever. All the other ones I'm OK with just SMB in overdrive. Surprised Big Blue Brawl stage isn't there I take advantage of sending my opponents straight into the concrete. (and if they survive they get dragged by the stage until they are out.)
As someone who mostly plays competitively I think Orbital Gate Assault is really overhated. Yes it's chaotic and there's a lot going on, but isn't that what free for alls are all about? Besides it's not as unplayable as everyone makes it out to be, you can react to everything as long as you're paying attention.
I think it's much more in your control than getting screwed over because your opponent got an OP item or final smash
I love Orbital Gate Assault, but it’s just because I think that fighting on top of a bunch of spaceships in the heat of battle is awesome.
Who doesn't love a bit of uncontrollable chaos? Isn't that why we love mario party so much?
Orbital gate assault feels much more uncontrollably deadly than any other stage. If your opponent gets a Hammer or a Smash Ball you think "Well, I could have grabbed it if I had been faster" or "I could have dodged that if I was better." Even though it clearly gives a huge advantage to your opponent, there's still some form of counterplay so you feel in control.
Orbital Gate Assault's stage transitions are immediate and have almost no warning. Platforms just explode under your feet or vanish into the background, and if you didn't happen to be standing in the right place at the right time then you're dead with no saving throw. The warning animations are often imprecise or nonexistent - the spaceship is marked "target," but you don't have a good indication of how long before it explodes, or what platform you should jump to when it does.
A lot of stages have deadly hazards. The Banzai Bill, the Voltorb in Saffron City, the giant lava wave in Norfair. You know what all of them have in common? They're obvious, marked with brightly visible warnings, and take several seconds before they blow you away. Because if they didn't do that, it would feel really unfair for you to die instantly.
Rather get killed by a final smash or an item than terrible stage layout. At least my death feels slightly more justified, just saying.

I consider it one of the best stages in the series because it's a good size for 3 or more players, it's one of the only pre-4 stages fit for 4 or more players, & although it's made up of multiple large sections, the ways of getting from section to section are very limited so, if someone tries to run away, it's easy to chase them.
Its large spaces also make for great item play. There's a good risk/reward thing going on too because the areas that make it easy to avoid damage are close to blast zones so they're useful at low percent but, at high percent, they're too risky which makes people wanna manipulate you into going to those areas so they can finish you off.
This YellowMadness fellow gets it. Geez. Since when is more space a bad thing? I get it if there's an entire stage length between player 1 and 2, like Palutena's Temple, but a little extra breathing room and ways to use items and stuff never hurt anyone. Except the babies who cannot use the stage to their advantage. Or people with working brains. Or people who hate everything under the sun. Or....

@@D_YellowMadness The stage is awful because you can camp hardcore. It's not fun to play due to this, and certain characters have massive advantages when it comes to camping the stage. It's dog shit.

Hanenbow is not the only stage with unswimmable water in fact you mentioned the other one JUST before in the PacMan scrolling stage and even showcased it

From a spectacle standpoint, I think #10 on the list is the most amazing stage in smash history. It's such a great love letter to Star Fox. That being said, I know people do not like having to time the jumps when the missiles explode especially. Still easier to navigate flat diagonals like the Arwings than it is to traverse whatever shapes Poke Floats are.

Which are very unnatural shapes to move and fight on. And some of them are faster than the Aparoid missiles and Arwings in Orbital Gate Assault. The Unown for example. Then again, most people only remember the beginning of that stage with Squirtle and Onyx.

But since you bring it up, a quicker character with better jumps and projectiles is inherently better on a stage like this. That is a flaw and can be an issue for some players without being an issue for others, depending on what you want from a stage. For me, that's a problem.

I actually like some of the stages on this list. I don’t know, I guess I’m just more tolerant of these things than other people are. I’ve never played the Hanenbow stage though, since I never unlocked it. One of my least favorite stages is Norfair from Brawl because I didn’t enjoy having to run into a capsule to avoid the lava.
i always liked norfair. the hazards are so fun to exploit for me, especially when i can combo the lava into a kill move

People that play the game competitively can still have fun with the game, and you're directly implying that we don't. It's not black and white, either - playing with items on and off are both enjoyable, it's just that there's a preference to remove the unfair variables every now and then.

My point was literally just that there is no such thing as a “casual” player, just someone who plays the game, as intended (as a party game).
The distinction comes when people play competitively, which is what Sakurai didn’t specifically make Smash Bros. for (hence, why so many people got triggered when Brawl didn’t meet their insanely high competitive standards, and instead was more catered towards the rest of the fanbase).

You can try and make the argument that competitive isn't how the game is supposed to be played, but with the fact that you can adjust settings for equal playing fields and Nintendo's focus on accommodating competitive players for Ultimate, the argument kinda falls flat.
I'm not trying to start an argument here, just simply giving my two cents, since your statements seem to stereotype the competitive scene.

Hannabow is one of those levels I love to hate. As a kid, It stood out to me as the visuals were quite enjoyable. I’m incredibly happy to see it return because it really brings even more nostalgia to the Ultimate game
Pretty sure the reason PAC-MAZE wasn't brought to Ultimate is BECAUSE its gimmick was designed for the perspectives of multiple 3DS systems. Since Ultimate can do multiplayer on the same screen, it wouldn't quite work out - I mean, wouldn't it be confusing for people to still be hurt by Ghosts that appear blue to them?

New Pork City is a lot less pleasant looking, has a cheap as fuck stage hazard, and is a much bigger mess of a stage. Also, I love the maze-like structure of Great Cave Offensive.
I disagree completely, New Pork City looks amazing, not saying TGCO doesn't but it just doesn't look as good to me. Plus c'mon there's almost no way The Great Cave Offensive has better music than New Pork City.

Some of the big stages work pretty well for stamina battles too. They (generally) have pretty varied terrain and the huge blastzones don't matter when you don't need to knock someone off to KO them. Except 75M because that stage is just a train wreck.

The great cave offensive can be fun, but you gotta have 8+ players and have a high launch rate, and 20+ stocks
it's just a lot of fun seeing people launch into walls and bounce around wildly
Generally though, i wish they had split up these larger stages for 1-4 players, some of the smaller sections in some of these big stages can be fun to play on, just make them transform like castle siege or something
