- Is It Too Late To Plant Fall Potatoes? Zone 5 Gardening
We have grown a lot of fall potatoes here in Zone 5 Wisconsin, however July 21st is a few weeks later than we typically plant them, and we want to see if that is too late to get a good harvest.
Weather is an important factor when it comes to potato harvest, and with a planting this late, we are likely going to need some luck in that regard.
In this video, we talk about planting fall potatoes and growing fall potatoes in a raised bed. We show you our potato planting process. Regardless of the results, this will be a good potato growing experiment to help us learn how well these red potatoes grow this late in the season and for this short time period.

Can't wait for the results. It would also be interesting to see the effect the garlic plants have between them. I noticed my intersown beetroot has the most beautiful leaves in my garlic patch. Maybe it deters certain pests. Anyhow, free potatoes, big or small, always worth it.

Always room for more potato experiments! The Japanese beetles have been much less of a nuisance this year- I wonder if all this dry and smoky weather is keeping the population down?

Great video as always! I have about 4 sweet potatoes and 1 russet growing in the same uhaul box just to see how it will work. This is my first time growing potatoes period so it's going to be a lot of fun!❤
I just started 28 red norlands on 7/29! I know, risky! But they all came up and now we wait. Just ordered frost cloths for them in case our first comes early! :) (Northern CO, 5B here.)

I bought too many seed potatoes for the spring, and they've been hanging out in my basement. I'm looking for places to put them. I finished pulling my potatoes 2 days ago. Nice harvest.
looking forward to seeing your results. Here in central Indiana the beetles started showing up about two weeks ago. We started a new area in the backyard with just wild flowers this year and so far the beetles are concentrating mostly on those. They really seem to like the Foxglove.

We're planting out some grocery store potatoes later this week. It's an experiment for us, too, as we've never tried growing fall potatoes at our house. We only have three, but I have a spot that will be just perfect for them.
Haha I was just looking at 2 bags of potatoes I saved over winter. The growing parts are huge, about a foot and a half long. I can't believe they are still growing! No medium or water, just potatoes in paper bags. I should have planted them months ago, but I've been curious to see how long they will grow for without any input. 😊
Ha! Yes, they can grow really, really long! I don't know what you will get in terms of any potatoes because the light will probably make leaves instead of potatoes, but we have definitely planted and got results from some of our seed potatoes that had sprouted more than a foot!
Going to try ..I have quite a few left....Will try in a shade garden I don't use....these are small red potatoes...

Japanese beetles, I ordered a lot of wood chips for my garden a couple years ago, and they were infested with Japanese beetles eggs, took 2 years to eliminate them all
