    I like the concept of phenomenological timing also. Here’s some I discovered during winter research: When crocus bloom, plant spinach. When forsythia bloom, plant lettuce and peas. When daffodils bloom, plant beets and chard. There are many more; I used these this spring and found them reliable!

    I've been using shade cloth like this for years. One thing I've found is that if you live in an area with high humidity like I do, you'll want to remove the shade cloth for an hour or 2 a day because it'll trap humidity under it and cause blight. Shade cloth works best when you have an air gap between it and whatever you are covering. When I see someone pull shade cloth over a greenhouse and it lays right on top of the plastic, I always cringe because they are probably unaware that just creating a small air gap between the cloth and plastic on greenhouse makes a huge difference in temperature. Not that it doesn't work the other way, but you get better temp reduction with an air gap.

    I love your passion! The way you almost lose it with excitement talking about Tuck or something in the garden is awesome. We’re in Louisiana here and working on converting a wooded area to a BTE style garden/food forest. Obviously there is a good difference between the climates in Jersey and Louisiana so the phenomena timing trick and stuff like that are very helpful to me. Love your videos, love Tuck and pumped to get my own food forest going. Your videos help when I start feeling stuck or overwhelmed, thanks for what you’re doing!

    This year is my second attempt at a Fall garden. Last year wasn't so great. Green onions and Bok Choy were the only successes. 2 days ago I started seeds indoors in my South facing windows. During this video I paused to relocate my spinach seeds to a cooler spot. James, today you seriously helped me better understand pertinent facts about successful Fall planting. Especially helpful was the use of shade cloth and why it's important. I truly appreciate when you share philosophical bits you learned. Tell Tuck I adore him. I smile every time I see him. His mycorhizal roots have weaved their way into my heart. I kinda think all gardeners are connected.

    This winter, my project is going to be to build hoop house bones over all my raised beds. I’m exhausted trying to fight bugs here on the NC coast, and the sun is too powerful. Covers make so much more sense. Frost protection, but protection, sun protection...you can’t beat it.

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! I have a future video about it, but the multifunctionality of them makes so much sense

    • @jacquelinethomson2722
      @jacquelinethomson2722 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used Jame's hoop house design on my main raised garden bed and it was a total game changer! It only took me and my two boys an afternoon to build and we had kale, tatsoi, carrots and spinach that grew throughout the winter here on the shore in NJ. This year we will build more of the hoop houses in the other garden beds to increase our fall/winter harvest. Such an easy project and is well worth the effort! Thanks James!!

    • @charliewilliams8794
      @charliewilliams8794 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I so feel you on the bugs I wish I could put insect net protection on everything but thats a lot of hand pollination and then you have trellis but bean beetle and stink bugs do a lot of damage this time of the year for me and vine borer took out all my squash. It like you look out and everything is growing looking good and then insects come from around the world it seems like and then your spraying and plucking and your garden looks like its been attacked and your already at over worked you just want to harvest and maintain not fight and struggle for a bean or a squash lol. Good luck and happy gardening im working on the same thing your talking about.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@charliewilliams8794 it’s not as bad as you think. Tomatoes and peppers are primarily wind pollinated. For plants like cucumbers and zucchini, you can grow parthenocarpic varieties that will set fruit without pollination. As for greens, they don’t flower for food. Basically, 90% of what we grow for annual vegetables don’t need bees. Things like melons will need them, but they need to sprawl in the open anyway.

    • @charliewilliams8794
      @charliewilliams8794 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tuck does shade. Expert!
    But, I've a 40gal tub I tried carrots in, good light soil, but very small results. Gonna try again. Thanks James

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you did it in a tub make sure there is VERY VERY good drainage. If there isn't good drainage your soil will go anaerobic and the carrots won't want to grow down into it. So they will essentially be stuck cause growing down would be "poison."
      That may not have been your issue, but that is the issue is see 90% of the time with people growing in pots or containers

    Gardening and farming is like Greek to me, but in recent years I began to believe in this idea of dynamic and intensive gardening methods.
    This way of gardening is going to cost for certain items such as the screening and other paraphernalia.
    I believe that people worldwide should take to intensive gardening.

    Hi James,Thank you for your kind words on my last post.. I decided to stop trying to save anything else this season. Been a hard struggle.I have these bakery shelves. there about 8 inches deep. and probably 14 inches long and 8 inches wide.I added my soil with a bit of fertilizer I cut my runners from the strawberries and replanted them.It's amazing the amount of runners these plants have. I also planted my green beans. hoping to have a good crop.before the snow flies. I really Love how you take the time to explain what you are planting. Your video's have changed the way I am doing things, What is that covering called? sorry I think I missed that part.You and Tuck have a wonderful safe Labor Day. God Bless, Jolene

    Even though I *do* love watching Tuck....what I love even more is watching how you interact with him....you're a good daddy to ole' Tuck. You had that bowl and water right there for him. He's lucky to have you and you're lucky to have him. You're two 'peas in a pod' (yeah, a little corny, but....dang! I can't stop with the veggie references...that last one was purely coincidental! lol) Thanks so much for this channel. I watch all the time, you're one of the few, if not the only gardening channel that's closest to my growing zone. I wanted to ask, could you do a video about protecting your garden from a strong storm, or a hurricane? I currently grow in grow bags so I can move my plants if I have to, but what do you do? Do you cover them? Tie them down? or just let nature take it's course? Also, have you ever thought of writing a gardening book? I think you'd do great with your "food forest" plan. Humans are going to have to learn how to grow their own food soon, you're a great teacher and I really appreciate everything you do to bring this channel and all it's content to us. Also, my grow pot garden was about a 75% failure this year. I'm sure it was a fertilizer issue, I'm going to try to learn more about composting, even though things didn't go so well for my garden this year, I'm still optimistic for next year, and I might try some fall planting, I think I can grow some lettuces and garlic. Anyway, thanks. :)

    Great video James! We have been growing 30 years here in central Texas. 40% shade cover is a must when starting the fall garden. I have a seed starting rack covered with 40% cover. We installed a watering system that has a chiller on it and we can keep the seed trays cool even when its 90 + deg out. I will try the carrot method, thanks! God Bless.

    Thank you for the video! I love seeing a gardening channel from my home state! Knowing about the white butterflies I kept seeing around my garden, and the expected frost date is really helpful! Thanks!
