  • These are the new Sonic Screwdriver sound effects from the 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who and the 15th Doctor's new series.
Feel free to use these sound effects to your heart's content. Credit is not necessary but is appreciated.
These sound effects are really not too dissimilar from the previous series, the same standard buzzing noise but with some additional sfx for the hologram screens and shields. Also feel free to tell me your opinion of the 15th Doctor's sonic, it's certainly different but I don't hate it.
Download link coming soon - I recommend downloading this video as mp3.

I love the little si-fi beep at the beginning and end of the buzzing!

I do too! A subtle change from the last sound effects which used to just be a click noise

I gotta ask. Why does recent Doctor Who seem to lean more into the idea of every problem can be solved with a sonic screwdriver? I mean, now it can apparently generate shield screens?! It’s like how writers think everything can be solved with one of Batman’s gadgets. In both cases, both characters would’ve used their minds to figure things out

You're definitely right, as with each series they kept utilising the sonic more and more to the point where Matt Smith was basically waving it about practically all of the story with little to no reason whatsoever. I do agree that the sonic should not be used to solve every problem that comes in the Doctor's way but the BBC won't discard it anytime soon since it's just as iconic as the TARDIS or the Daleks and it boosts merchandise sales.
SPOILERS if you haven't seen the specials.
Saying that though the Sonic shields were pretty cool I thought, they were temporary as they did break not long after Donna's family escaped so I'd assume it wouldn't work with every projectile. It also took him ages to make the shields, so it’s not like he can just pop one out anytime someone shoots at him. It should be used as a last resort. I liked how the sonic was used in Wild Blue Yonder since it basically made it so the Doctor loses it for most of the story, as well as the TARDIS. In the whole of the Giggle, it was only used a few times so it seems that it was only showed off in the first special.
I've always loved the screwdriver and I think Capaldi utilised it well where he didn't use it constantly, even having sunglasses for a while, but should definitely not be the plot-solving tool like in The Power of Three. It should be there to avoid simple problems like a locked door (but not all doors), general scanning (like something chatgpt could do, giving info), interacting with technology and even destroying some if it is capable of doing so with that specific thing. Even in the Doctor Falls he scanned and took the software that Nardole coded from his computer into his sonic so it could blow up Cybermen so it couldn't just do it already. Lastly, the Doctor usually gets into situations where it can't be fixed with the Sonic anyway. I think it should be the Doctor's version of the iPhone.
TL;DR out of universe it's kept because of merchandise and because it looks cool, in universe the Doctor is clever and it's convenient to have but shouldn't solve all plot problems which it doesn't.

@@ClingToFilm my main issue with the sonic shields is that, by introducing them, it’s gonna be weird when it’s not used in situations where it would’ve been most convenient. And, I feel like adding these kinds of upgrades kinda takes away what was so impressive about it in the first place, that being that the Doctor was clever enough to use the modes of the screwdriver defensively, like sonic pulses against the Silence (Day of the Moon, I think it’s called) and the Cybermat (Closing Time) or switching off lights to mask his escape (Demons Run). You may have noticed all the episodes I mentioned are from Smith’s era and that’s because I feel he was the best example of using the sonic screwdriver’s other modes defensively without outright having defensive measures. He never needed shields in the past because he could use the other modes defensively and it just seems kinda odd for them to only be added now and not a long time ago

@@evantgm1055 a very good point! Those moments are really awesome and I remember River saying that "you've got a screwdriver go build a cabinet" whilst the Doctor was using the sonic pulses against the silence. The same thing happens in the Day of the Doctor and even the Doctor Falls, using sonic energy to create a "shield" of sorts but mainly something to defend themselves. I can definitely see why having a shield outright implemented as a sonic feature doesn't make much sense, especially since Russell (or David I don't remember) said in the video commentary that they "felt it was always able to do that" but now they have the budget and VFX to do it. I won't lie, I think it looks cool. I like to use the headcanon that the Doctor/TARDIS upgraded the sonic to adapt to his future timeline as he becomes more intelligent and experienced as he travels but that's just me. You're right though, he never needed them in the past and I think it's an excuse to have a badass moment with the sonic.

@@ClingToFilm don’t get me wrong, it is a pretty cool moment. My main issue is… why only include shields now (in canon, anyway. IRL can just be chalked up to VFX). I mean, there have been multiple times in the past where the Doctor keeps getting himself into increasingly more dangerous scenarios. It just seems odd to only add them now and not when he would’ve needed them a long time ago. I still stand by my point of not having them at all as, like I said, it takes away from what made it so cool in the first place. That being the Doctor is able to use it in other ways to defend himself. My idea is he probably could’ve used the sonic to either deactivate or disarm the weapons, since we’ve seen that it can do that

@@evantgm1055 Yeah I think I'm gonna have to agree with you. Though I like to think that with every Doctor the sonic evolves and it gets better technology. Let's be honest, it isn't just Sonic anymore. It's way more multi-functional than that. The shields are a bit much and are cool looking but he has to create it and can't just pop one out at anytime. Maybe it's an "app" for the sonic lol. Anyway it seems like with the latest new Sonic it won't be used to the extent that it was in the 60th. Maybe they could add a plot point where if he makes shields then that drains the Sonic's energy supply quicker, therefore he can't use it for other things later in the story. Cause and effect.
