I actually like the sonic glasses for the simple fact that its harder to overuse. Seeing the Doctor put on sunglasses every three seconds would be super awkward, and you also can't believably point it at someone like its some kind of weapon. It basically removes all the features of the sonic screwdriver that I hate, and leaves it as just a nice tool.
11's Sonic is peak design to me, it's so sleek, slender and alien. The green and copper works so well with his original TARDIS and the extending claws are so showboat-y, really matching the way that Matt Smith portrayed his Doctor. I don't think it should have been used for Capaldi though, in my opinion every Doctor should have their own unique sonic that reflects them. Unpopular opinion, but I really like 13's, the cobbled-together look suits Jodie well, and the orange crystal aesthetic harkens back to her TARDIS just like 11's did. I think it's unfairly underappreciated for being a one-off.
I really do wish Capaldi got his sonic much earlier. It’s actually one of my favorite sonic designs too. It’s a shame he spent so much time with the past that his era never really built itself around him fully, well at least in my opinion. Clara should have left during 12’s first Christmas Special, Bill should have come earlier, yadda yadda. I’m sure people echo this too much already lolol.

Something I liked about number thirteen's sonic screwdriver that was temporarily used by number fourteen was that it looked like something extra-terrestrial in origin.
The biggest sin of 13's sonic was making us think her incarnation would be much more "hands-on" and have a sort of engineer/tinkerer doctor, which just didn't happen for the most part. That and the fact it legitimately looks like a vibrator, which is not a great look for the first ever female doctor.
The thing I like the most about 11 and 12's sonic screwdrivers compared to every other one is that theirs actually resemble something akin to a professional tool. It makes sense - it's a screwdriver.
I rather liked the Thirteenth Doctors device. It had an organic shape that served as a interesting prop to introduce a former girlfriend to similarly shaped design that didn't have any flashing lights but did offer three different vibration modes and four speed choices. It became a useful tool in certain situations. It also had a intriguing way of making time pass rapidly if fully charged and properly employed.
My favorite is definitely 8’s Dark Eyes sonic screwdriver. I’m actually quite keen on wooden designs for many things, so seeing that this sonic had practically everything I loved made it jump directly to the top for me.
I absolutely love the 14th doctor’s screwdriver. It seems like all screwdrivers combined. It’s got the classic who silver as the main material and not just secondary to another, when activating it has the sort of lamp sound the 13th doctor’s has, it has the light sort of elongated up the screwdriver like the 12th doctor’s, it’s got to extension thing and leather grip like the 11th doctor’s, it has the crackle effect like the 10th doctor’s, it has the bottom like the laser screwdriver where you can twist the bottom and aswell look similar
I think the idea was kinda like 9/10’s the closed mode would be used more directionally (point and use) whereas open would be used in a more general manner, like when 10 blows up the doors to let the rescue team into the void ship room, or when 11 threatens the Ice Warrior with blowing up the ship.
This is the only defense that I will give for the sunglasses - apparently from what I have heard, Capaldi wanted them because he wanted any kid to be able to pretend to be the doctor without needing to buy a toy and could find a cheap item anyone could pick up - for the people who a stuck in extremely working class conditions I think the thoughtfulness is great - however I would have liked at least some unique Galifreyian designs on the glasses to make it stand out, giving them personality - kids could then use marker or something to draw it on their own pair and that process in itself is fun
The sonic lance actually looks similar to the 15th Doctor's Sonic ~TV remote~ Screwdriver Also, and this is purely my opinion, I really wish that the 12th doctor used Rivers Screwdriver as his main device for a while, before giving it to her. As in the silence in the library 2 parter she repeatedly tells 10 that she is using the future doctor's screwdriver that he gifted to her because he loves her and I think it would've had a bit more weight to it if 12 had actually used the sonic he gifts river in the end, instead of just pulling it out his ass at the end of the Christmas special to maintain continuity.
I personally like 13s sonic but I do belive that the main reason why others aren't a huge fan of it is because the master in series 3 technically built a cooler looking lazer screwdriver with human and alien bits compared to 13 and her sonic despite 13 not having access to the tardis at the time like the master did
The red button on the bottom of 11s sonic was the only way activate the prop initially, you can see him using it in time of angles / flesh and stone (the first episodes he filmed). However Matt Smith didn’t like it so they moved the button to the shaft.
River’s screwdriver was the first toy version I ever had, It had so many different settings- I loved using it! Seeing this video again reminded me how cool it was. Definitely my favourite.

However, this video is the first time I got a good look at the 14th’s. May be my favorite now. it looks like a combination between the 10th and 11th. I ended up getting the 10th for my daughter for Christmas. I was leaning towards the 11th, but there’s a variation of 10th toy that has an invisible ink pen on the black end of it. I figured she would have more fun with that. I don’t hate the 13th’s design, but I feel like it looks like something a villain would have, like the Master.

I actually bought a little pen light because it looked like the second doctor's. It is too minimalist for my liking, but it looks like a scientific tool rather than a toy (of the adult variety in the case of the handle on Jodie's)
I think the style of the 3rd, 4th/5th, and the 7th/8th movie style is my favourite. The little halo antenna thing looks scientific, it looks like you can hold it at multiple angles to do different things, and the general vibe just feels right. Maybe it could have done with a light to look like it's doing something on screen, but I don't think it's really all that needed because it's just really nice. As for what colour variant I prefer, I don't know. I kinda like the hazard stripes in a weird way, but I think the TV movie style is the most refined looking being mostly silver with a splash of other metal colours.
I really hated the 12th Doctors sonic screwdriver because in my opinion it didn't look like a device or instrument. To me it just looked like a part of something else. I think it was because of the cluttered design and personally I like the head of the screwdriver to be more distinct from the bottom and capaldis didn't make that distinction strong enough. It all just blended into a bunch of random parts for me.
I like Capaldi's mostly due to the Tardis-looking emitter and the rotating lights, but yeah it definitely looks too cluttered. I also think it looks the most like a toy rather than an actual tool.

I like that you included the 6th Doctor's Sonic "Lance", lol. At the same time, it is different locking and hardly the nicest looking on the list. I consider it to be a Sonic Screwdriver in all but name, basically. It did come about during that (JNT) era when the "showrunners" of that time were quite against the Doctor having one, and remember, in an early 5th Doctor run, his Sonic Screwdriver got destroyed in The Visitation, only for the Sonic Screwdriver to properly return with the 7th & 8th Doctor in the TV Movie. I have a little fan theory. I often think, especially with the more outlandish uses of it, the Doctor sometimes only pretends to use the Sonic Screwdriver when they are not actually using it for its actual function if that makes any sense..?
Never a fan of the sonic sunglasses, but let's face it: the sonic does pretty much everything a situation needs EXCEPT unscrew screws. And it doesn't work on wood! Cheers....
I'd have to agree with most of these placements. As much as I like the 4th and War Doctors, their sonics are admittedly a bit naff. I just hope when the time comes for 15th's new sonic, it at least builds on the design of 14th's rather than essentially starting from scratch yet again.
Im gonna be honest I agree with your placement for threes sonic but I think it would be higher on your list if it was fours. I always thought fours screwdriver suited three better and threes suited four better
The sonic sunglasses sucked in my opinion. And it seemed to give Character Options license to release a cheaply made and over priced pair of sunglasses that didn’t really do much. I really like the new sonic screwdriver from an aesthetic point of view. From a practica point of view though, I think there’s too much going on which makes it seem cluttered and overly-fussy. I felt the same about Matt Smiths sonic. A lovely piece of design that was pleasing to the eye, but was more than was needed. I like a simple sonic screwdriver to be honest. The War Doctor’s screwdriver did it for me, and wasn’t a million miles off from the original one used by Troughton. I also like the sonic screwdriver to be a sonic screwdriver. Ever since it was used to re-grow some broken barbed wire in 2005 it’s increasingly become more and more like a cross between a battery charger, magic wand and Star-Trek tricorder. I feel like it’s become quite a convenient and (sorry in advance) lazy way to progress a story. Classic Who got like that too, which is why they decided to drop it altogether in the end. I miss the days when it simply used sonic waves to undo screws, open locks and occasionally blow up land mines using sonic vibrations. These days it’s not really a screwdriver, and doesn’t seem to rely simply on anything exclusively sonic either. It’s many functions these days are stretching my ability to suspend disbelief. Like the TARDIS interior, the sonic screwdriver has been given a status almost like a character in its own right. When the Doctor regenerates it now pretty much expected that we’ll get a new sonic and new TARDIS interior too, which generates almost as much excitement. For my taste it’s got a bit too much. That all being said, there have been some aesthetically pleasing designs since 2005. There’s been something I liked in each of them. Except the last one because it just looked, to me at least, like an expensive sex toy. Although I did like the Amber-coloured light.

Honestly, 13's screwdriver beat's 12's. 12's screwdriver has always looked like a plastic toy to me, and not a piece of equipment or a tool. 9/10 and 11's screwdrivers at least look functional, and I know what I'm seeing, and 13's is a little rough, but she built it herself so I appreciate the aesthetic, but Capaldi's is just so plastic and goofy to me.
I think what saves 13's screwdriver for me is the fact that it lights up all along the length as well, I think that looks really cool. If it was literally just rough metal blobs with a light on the end, it would be pitiful.
Fun fact of the war doctor sonic actually was a toy, and it's The only one that Vaguely resembles an actual screw driver The classic ones look more like a sonic wrench than a sonic screwdriver
I disagree with the ranking of Jodie's screwdriver. Hers is easily better than any classic design for the simple fact that she cobbled it together with scraps and it looks alien and mysterious and beautiful, just like 13 herself. It's not simple because she's not simple. It's a perfect design. A lot of the classics look like those tools doctors look inside ears with.
12's screwdriver should have been given a more premium look cos it looks like a toy to me. I also disagree with the view that he shouldn't have used 11's sonic and that every doctor has to have their own. 11's sonic suited him just fine and I'd rather they continued with that rather than going a series without it. I also like that it adds continuity between doctors. 9 and 10 have the same screwdriver/tardis, 12 already has a modified version of 11's second tardis so why not keep the screwdriver too?

Capaldi's toggle switch went from a mix brass to corrugated in it's first appearance to a straight corrugated.

I really hated the 12th Doctors sonic screwdriver because in my opinion it didn't look like a device or instrument. To me it just looked like a part of something else. I think it was because of the cluttered design and personally I like the head of the screwdriver to be more distinct from the bottom and capaldis didn't make that distinction strong enough. It all just blended into a bunch of random parts for me.
I like Capaldi's mostly due to the Tardis-looking emitter and the rotating lights, but yeah it definitely looks too cluttered. I also think it looks the most like a toy rather than an actual tool.
@LexVanguard2004 I can totally see the appeal its just not my cup of tea.
The emitter with its rotation lights was fine, the rest looked, and IS, difficult to hold.
i personally really liked the sonic sunglasses peter capaldi is my favorite doctor and i absolutely love his screwdriver but the sunglasses were awesome

I hate how it started being used less and less after David Tennant's and Matt Smith's Doctor, Eleventh's screwdriver is peak to me. The design and such.
I like that you included the 6th Doctor's Sonic "Lance", lol. At the same time, it is different locking and hardly the nicest looking on the list. I consider it to be a Sonic Screwdriver in all but name, basically. It did come about during that (JNT) era when the "showrunners" of that time were quite against the Doctor having one, and remember, in an early 5th Doctor run, his Sonic Screwdriver got destroyed in The Visitation, only for the Sonic Screwdriver to properly return with the 7th & 8th Doctor in the TV Movie. I have a little fan theory. I often think, especially with the more outlandish uses of it, the Doctor sometimes only pretends to use the Sonic Screwdriver when they are not actually using it for its actual function if that makes any sense..?

I'd have to agree with most of these placements. As much as I like the 4th and War Doctors, their sonics are admittedly a bit naff. I just hope when the time comes for 15th's new sonic, it at least builds on the design of 14th's rather than essentially starting from scratch yet again.

Im gonna be honest I agree with your placement for threes sonic but I think it would be higher on your list if it was fours. I always thought fours screwdriver suited three better and threes suited four better
The sonic sunglasses sucked in my opinion. And it seemed to give Character Options license to release a cheaply made and over priced pair of sunglasses that didn’t really do much.
I really like the new sonic screwdriver from an aesthetic point of view. From a practica point of view though, I think there’s too much going on which makes it seem cluttered and overly-fussy. I felt the same about Matt Smiths sonic. A lovely piece of design that was pleasing to the eye, but was more than was needed.
I like a simple sonic screwdriver to be honest. The War Doctor’s screwdriver did it for me, and wasn’t a million miles off from the original one used by Troughton. I also like the sonic screwdriver to be a sonic screwdriver. Ever since it was used to re-grow some broken barbed wire in 2005 it’s increasingly become more and more like a cross between a battery charger, magic wand and Star-Trek tricorder. I feel like it’s become quite a convenient and (sorry in advance) lazy way to progress a story. Classic Who got like that too, which is why they decided to drop it altogether in the end. I miss the days when it simply used sonic waves to undo screws, open locks and occasionally blow up land mines using sonic vibrations. These days it’s not really a screwdriver, and doesn’t seem to rely simply on anything exclusively sonic either. It’s many functions these days are stretching my ability to suspend disbelief.
Like the TARDIS interior, the sonic screwdriver has been given a status almost like a character in its own right. When the Doctor regenerates it now pretty much expected that we’ll get a new sonic and new TARDIS interior too, which generates almost as much excitement. For my taste it’s got a bit too much.
That all being said, there have been some aesthetically pleasing designs since 2005. There’s been something I liked in each of them. Except the last one because it just looked, to me at least, like an expensive sex toy. Although I did like the Amber-coloured light.

Honestly, 13's screwdriver beat's 12's. 12's screwdriver has always looked like a plastic toy to me, and not a piece of equipment or a tool. 9/10 and 11's screwdrivers at least look functional, and I know what I'm seeing, and 13's is a little rough, but she built it herself so I appreciate the aesthetic, but Capaldi's is just so plastic and goofy to me.
I think what saves 13's screwdriver for me is the fact that it lights up all along the length as well, I think that looks really cool. If it was literally just rough metal blobs with a light on the end, it would be pitiful.

I disagree with the ranking of Jodie's screwdriver. Hers is easily better than any classic design for the simple fact that she cobbled it together with scraps and it looks alien and mysterious and beautiful, just like 13 herself. It's not simple because she's not simple. It's a perfect design. A lot of the classics look like those tools doctors look inside ears with.

I'm going to go classic on this. I think the modern era's sonic screwdrivers are too powerful and do too much. I much prefer the Classic Who versions.
12's screwdriver should have been given a more premium look cos it looks like a toy to me.
I also disagree with the view that he shouldn't have used 11's sonic and that every doctor has to have their own. 11's sonic suited him just fine and I'd rather they continued with that rather than going a series without it. I also like that it adds continuity between doctors. 9 and 10 have the same screwdriver/tardis, 12 already has a modified version of 11's second tardis so why not keep the screwdriver too?
