@@JoshSnares Crazy how I didn't even know about that till now - and I worked on Daleks in Colour! (Also love how many of my shots you've used as screengrabs 😊) And yes an NDA comes first 😅
@@ThatsChromaif that's true Great work And of course non disclosure agreement comes first Personally if you are working on them Here's a fun one for you Mind robber, although it would be fun to see this one come to being I'm kinda hoping we could get a dual version One version which shows us the doctor, Jamie, Zoe and the master, the TARDIS too (obviously) in colour while the rest remains part of the written word in b&w barring the carcus who is brightly coloured being a comic book character (and we all know how colourful comics are or were) It shows the elements of what they are Then there would be a full colour edit excluding the white void and robots barring Jamie and Zoe and obviously the doctor
For me, I would choose 'The Enemy of the World' for Troughton as the colour pallette for that would vary from the lush green leaves in Salamander's office to the golden sandy beaches and blue sea of Australia to the browns/reds of the underground bunker. Its probably the most colourful of any 60s story.
I know this probably isn't a popular opinion but I'd love to see An Unearthly Child colorized firstly it's the first episode so it's definitely important to do it eventually second it's one of the shorter stories so there wouldn't need to be as heavy of an edit third can you imagine what color could do for the fire flickering on the cave walls the snow on the ground as they escape hell it could probably even fix the parts where it's so hard to see in the first episode I mean like you can barely even see poor Ian when he's talking to Barbara in the car and you can see even less when they're inside the building looking for Susan color really could do so much for that story.
While the actual cut down is... wild, I love that the colours are clearly based on the "We need to sell colour TV's, DAMMIT" era of colour, it's one of my favourite aesthetics from the history of TV
I've yet to see this colorized version, but seeing the shot of the Daleks' control room with the rich purples, I thought Jerry Finnerman's stage inspired lighting for the original Star Trek series. One almost expects William Shatner in a velour tunic, black flared trousers and boots to step into frame.
@@Redfern42 Ironically, Finnerman's lighting is so OTT I tend to watch original Trek with the colour off. His palette really lends itself to amazing contrasts, and the whole thing comes off looking like season one of The Outer Limits - especially eps like Devil in the Dark.
i think this is absoultley a story that could do with an enhancement and colorisation and an edit. However.. the whole smeared screen effect is going to make that nigh on impossible
I did a cutdown of Web Planet a bunch of years back. Got it down to 63 minutes. It's not perfect - some story points are a bit of a mess - but it's a lot more watchable than the original. Still not enormously watchable, but a lot more watchable. 🤣 Fixed the wonky TARDIS landing too.
I showed my partner this version as their first experience of ‘The Daleks’ and while they liked it for the most part, they thought the story still dragged in places. Which I found fascinating and also made me thankful I didn’t think to show them the original story before now. 💀
I wonder if that had more to do with the way it was shot than the story itself, since modern productions tend to have more closeups and quicker cutting. Classic Who isn't exactly famous for terribly dynamic direction either, which is understandable given the tight shooting schedules and the limitations of a multi-camera setup, but can be difficult to adjust to if you're not used to it.
The Mind Robber. Just choose some short stories and colourise as is. If want to add in a feature version too, fine, but for me, I like the stories as is more - as that is how it happened.
On stories where added new CGI and sound, I like them, but I prefer to see as they were. The odd Dalek laser effect I can live with and maybe some colours chosen or silvers were done to make the b/w film clearer, so maybe the ord colour interpretation is fine, but, I do enjoy the dialogue more as is and close to the original. Edits are not really my thing. However, this was done well and could be half done now, half done later. The War Games would not be as good colourised. The edit would be too much. And wars in b/w is not a bad thing to portray.
@@jason_a_smith_gb I think you make a good point, they can't beat the originals, its mainly just a what if. I would also prefer that money just being invested into the animations
When I was attending Carol Ann Ford's talk at WHOOVERVILLE 15 at the end of August she said Jacqueline Hill would have grimaced at seeing Barbara wearing pink! 😆
I really love seeing a take from someone who is fair but firm and is definitely the biggest Hartnell fan I know of it's refreshing. And thank you for single handily bringing it into existence.
Would like to see a (cut-down) Cybermen serial done one day. TOMB - in colour - would be interesting to see; especially the classic scene with the Cybermen, reviving and leaving their 'tombs', to release their Controller. I wouldn't want to see any PURPLE Cybermen, though, as I've seen in some of the less successful colourisation attempts with '60s Cybermen. Lol.
Totally agree on the music, bit over the top on some scenes, both in volume and sometimes being distractingly bombastic, but I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed it, it’s just nice to see something familiar but so different.
MInd Robber would be perfect to animate. They could get even more surreal with doing funky things in the backgrounds, and make the wide cast feel more interesting.
Personally The idea of colouring mind robber is fun to me but that's because I always envision it being half coloured As in the doctor, Zoe, Jamie and the master They don't belong there and the characters are mostly from the written word so seems right to keep them the way it was The only one I feel should be brightly coloured would be the carcus, he's from the future too so that wouldn't feel out of place
I imagine they will do Tomb of the Cybermen as the Troughton color story. Perhaps they could finally fix up the color on the first episode of Invasion of the Dinosaurs while they're at it for The Collection?
They'll almost certainly do Invasion for Season 11. They want these episodes to look as good as possible, and almost certainly this will get the budget over anything else.
I’d be interested in a colourisation of The Dalek Invasion of Earth.Seeing as we have a cut down version of this in the shape of Daleks:Invasion Earth 2150ad it would be interesting to see the original with a similar structure.I always feel the TV version drags in the middle episodes so a tighter cut could be fun.
Love your videos Josh, always have, always will! This is yet another brilliant one. And my own thoughts about this topic were summarised by your own words anyway…. That all of this is just a bonus, something different, a new way to see new light through old windows. And the Original still exists, untouched, so, no harm done, if anybody dislikes what’s been done here. As you say it’s just another way to enjoy our show. Happy days. Keep well.
I love the creative approach to the colours, I love the idea of giving these bespoke edits to make colourisation easier and to avoid any conception of "replacing" or "fixing" the originals, though I think 75 minutes was simply too short for what was originally well over double the length and already packed quite full. The colourisation work was incredible, but the cut felt a little too quick, the flashbacks could get a bit much and the music refusing to stop dragged down the experience for me. The escape from the city was a standout moment of creativity though. In future, I hope they choose much shorter stories, or shoot for a longer runtime in the edit, maybe 90 minutes. The 75 minute format would probably work for 4 parters like Tomb of the Cybermen, but my dream is a 90 minute colour edit of The Seeds of Death. I'd love to see The Dalek Invasion of Earth but I'm not sure how well a cutdown would work, but the Sensorites would be lovely! I'd love the revival to visit the Sense Sphere, and I imagine if they did that, a colourised Sensorites would be a fun tie-in.
No matter the flaws, for me and my sisters the best moment of the entire 60th anniversary will always remain to me when the jazzy heist movie music started playing during the Doctor and companions' escape from the Dalek city, the scene turned into a crazy montage, and Carole Ann Ford's cheeky little wink got a perfect closeup. That's the magic of Doctor Who right there.
My overall thought still remains that they were trying to turn something old into something new and given the source were destined to fall short. The colourisation is ok - but this is one area where license can be taken as the sets and costumes would have been chosen for how they would appear in B&W. So the Dalek city should look metallic - and the control panels not an explosion in a sweetshop. The sound was the most distracting and most obvious 'modernising' choice. I agree with you about the editing choice being largely dictated by the need to cut down the runtime - but gain trying to make a 'slow' 7 part story into a tight 90 is never going to work well esp when the obvious things to cut were left in. That whole trek through the swamp and the caves - could have been cut and covered with one line. You go that way and we rendezvous in 2 days. The seventies omnibus repeats were great at the time but I do recall being confused why bits I remember were missing. As for the next choice - I would be happy with any story - just colour all of it and no overdubs from Ayers and his casiotone.
I genuinely found it to be beautiful. I have a book from when I was a kid (A Book of Monsters, hugely recommend it) that had some colourised set photos and that's how the serial always looked to me in my head. Seeing it in motion on screen, without having to use any imagination as to what it might look like, was magical. The edit was great, in my opinion. Crushing everything down into 75 minutes was an insane task but there was so, so much filler in those old episodes that I can absolutely forgive a little bit of jank in order to make it palletable for modern audiences, not to mention feasible to colourise! It was fun watching it and seeing how the fat was trimmed.
I completely agree with you, I like the cut downs but I also just love the outros and intros cuts, like in The Tales Of The Tardis, being able to watch Curse of Frenric was great, i’d love to see The Remembrance Of The Daleks in one go, it’s one of my favourites
For me, I always like the idea of a colourisation of Tomb of the Cybermen that made BOLD choices with colour inspired by the Egyptology craze which inspired the story. While it would be ironic to see Cybermen in gold, like the Pharaoh's of old, it would be an interesting way to pay respect to the story's archaeological influences AND give us a cyberman story with a little more colour. Would be a controversial move though
@@MaybeHarveyyeah it does, I thought she was missing head when clicked on time stamp so quickly watched clip, maybe because she shortish and in-line with hartnell why it looks like that
I have a headache right now and seeing this video reminded me that that's exactly how I felt when watching this The Daleks! (Not an insult to the colourizors who did a great job putting the colour in it, was just not a fan of the bright colours! P.S. Idk what the right word is, colorizers, colurisors etc. P.S.S. Also, I actually had a headache before I watched the colourisation, but I'm convinced it didn't help.)
I loved it, but my eyes took a bit to adjust and i dont know why. It was like my eyes were expecting one thing and seeing another 😆 im hoping for Tomb this year ☺️
I completely forgot this happened -- deliberately -- and you just had to remind me of it 😂 The edit was obnoxious and confusing and made me feel like I was on drugs unfortunately 😢
Yeah, the best way I csn describe the Edit is if you've already seen the story and you want a quick reminder then watch Daleks in Colour, but if you have never seen The Daleks before then watch the original. Cause the new edit kinda leaves things out that is kind of confusing without the context of the original.
Hi Josh, Never mind RTD, I have long since thought that your content is worthy of inclusion on the classic series "collection" bluray box sets. In particular your videos about how lost episodes found their way back to the archives, which are superb. We've only had one 60's bluray box set so far, so I would love to see you given the chance to extend and update your content about the lost stories and have them included on future official releases. Keep these videos coming Josh................ ok, we all know you will never top your greatest video of all !! The remake of the K9 & Company title sequence ;-) but I actually get a twinge of excitement (steady now) when I see that you've uploaded something new. Thanks for everything you do :-)
Not a bad one to cut-down for the plebs either. I speak as someone who has experienced trying to get my Bollywood-action-used cousins to sit and watch back in the late 1990s.
As a Troughton boy I would love "Tomb of the Cybermen" or pretty much anything from those seasons. I liked "The Daleks", but - like you said - the Susan's plan was a bit off. But that was my only problem where I felt this is a cut down. I am really looking forward to more.
I just received Doctor Who The DALEKS In color. I love it! Not that I don’t like the black-and-white versions, I wish they can do this with all the black-and-white episodes of Classic Doctor Who! I like how they have both color and black-and-white versions.
It seems to have been taken down for copyright, but I remember I once saw someone cut down The War Games into just 10 minutes- 1 minute per episode. Of course, it was pretty unwatchable to anyone who didn't already know the story, but if they viewed it like that- You can add any extra 65 minutes of content you deem necessary- I definitely think they could do it (or at least i beleive i could do it lol
I thought it was great. The Dalek City model was stunning. It was like a 1960s movie. I think if they do another one, they should do a four parter, so they don't have to have jarring cuts. Definitely recommend though.
60s who with new who sfx is my worst nightmare... I personally really didn't like most of it except for the actual colourisation which as you say are breath taking
Knowing your such a big fan of Hartnells era I would love your opinions on big finish’s new first doctor stories, we’ve already had two videos today surely a third can be squeezed in/j
Funnily enough, I don’t really listen to many of the first Doctor era Big Finish If I’m going for BF, i usually go 5, 6 or 10. Sometimes 3 or 7, rarely 8.
@@JoshSnares rarely 8?!? I don’t know if I can support you anymore/j 😭 watching your videos got me into classic who and BF, personally 1,2,6 and 8 are my frequents rn
I think they have to improve on the edit side of these releases but the colouring especially the skins tone are amazing, one I like to see done would be The Seeds of death. (beautiful shot and ice Warriors)
Hmmmm, next colour one....Mind Robber would be interesting perhaps. I remember Waris Hussain not being keen on the idea of Unearthly Child being colourised at a screening I went to once, he said the BW was more atmospheric!
I watched this with my partner who is indifferent to Who and he loved it! We split it into 2 and he was desperate to watch the next bit the following day. I think that says a lot for its intended audience as he'd never have sat down for 7 B&W episodes. The Dalek reveal it think is a highlight as it uses hindsight to reedit something slightly underwhelming into a suspenseful, epic event - which it was never shot to be. Plus, its so pretty too, which definitely helped more than a straight up true to life style.
It'll inevitably be Tomb I imagine. BBC thinking will be: We've done Daleks, so now we need a Cyberman story. If nothing else, because it's easier to market and get regular viewers to tune in. Also has the advantage of being a Troughton, so you can say you've done one for both Doctors. It's also the only fully complete Cyberman story for the B&W era. I think one which would appeal only to actual fans, but would be incredible, and could be edited down quite nicely would be Enemy Of The World. There's an easy 75 minute, three act spy movie in there. And some of the locations are begging for that colour treatment. However, that doesn't have nearly as much a broad appeal as the Cybermen do.
That color of blue on the Dalek's body dots? Morticia Addams said it best in the film "Addam's Family Values:" "...all that I can forgive. But, Debbie? Pastels?"
I wondered what you thought about this. I don't know how often I'll watch it, though I did enjoy it. The War Games is crying for a cut down edit - there's a lot of good stuff in there, but cutting out all the filler down to, say, two hours, plus colourisation would be the cherry on top. I love that story so much, but yeah, it's a daunting project, I'm sure...
Great video, my thoughts were mostly the same as yours, although I wasn’t convinced by the new edit soundtrack which seemed a bit inconsistent at times. I’d like to see the Mind Robber colourised, firstly because I love it, and since there’s very little music it could have a fresh consistent new soundtrack. Or would we get a pink unicorn? It would be easy to cut this down because there are so many set pieces like pieces in a jigsaw. Other than that, the Aztecs has a lot of potential for vibrant colours and it’s such a good story…. Or the Chase which is my all time favourite story and has so much variety. They could just cut out the journey into terror completely hahaha. Hoping they do them all!!! Nice to see you back
While I really enjoyed the colourisation, it looked absolutely incredible. I really hated how much it was cutdown. A seven parter into only 75 minutes was far too ambitious. I was constantly being distracted by how the action but from fast paced cutting to the more static uncut sequences as they're two totally different styles. And I just broke down in laughter during the escape montage because I was just expecting it to end and Susan to say "Right, so that's the plan", plus the wink was just very stupid I thought, although good to see you enjoyed it. I think that it would be best for them to do four parters instead as they could be more easily cutdown to the 70-75 minute range without too much being lost and the pacing to be so distractingly inconsistent. I would like to see Edge of Destruction or the Romans colourised though as they could potentially not be cutdown, but obviously I'm still waiting on Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1
I liked this release, it was a fun interpretation of the story. And relevant to the Anniversary! Personally, I don’t see much sense in colourisations but I’d watch anything they produce next 🥰
Wonderful video Josh!! I too was super impressed with the colourisation AND the new soundtrack! They did an amazing job! My negative also would be also that the edit felt super rushed but I understand why they couldn't do it. I think it may have been only an extra 10 minutes needed, maybe? I couldn't say what they should do next but the Sensorites would be a good call! Maybe the Time Meddler as it is such a good story
I'm not sure your worries about tomb being too grey/white for colourisation matters too much given the first colourisation ignores the line "everything is so white and ashen", still in the edit, as the crew explore a funky colourful forest. I'm sure the team will just do hot pink tombs and lime green cybermen if they want to, given that.
I do think Toom of the Cybermen will be next, especially with the final shot of The daleks colonization showing the 2nd Doctor in colour from the same story.
@@JoshSnares That shot was used because it had already been colourised on TH-cam - and so had a number of the shots in that montage! The material in the montage would have had absolutely no bearing on choosing the next story
@ThatsChroma But because it's the final shot, the guys working on these colorisations might have suggested adding that final shot to tease the next colorisation.
@@MrJ.Smith1234 I was one of 'those guys' who worked on this - and I can tell you that's definitely not the case. That final shot from Tomb was in the edit right from the start, long before a second colourisation project had even been considered! So as I said, the Daleks montage had no influence either way on the next colourisation
@@ThatsChroma I don't understand why your taking my comment so seriously. All I said was that I fought Tomb of the Cybermen would be next because the final shot of The daleks was from Tomb of the Cybermen. If you are one of the members of the colorisation team then I would think you would understand my fought process and my assumption.
LOVED this release. Sat there surprised and delighted by the playful approach, absolutely reverential to the original material. New music, new CGI, new dialogue, NEW COLOUR, and a thundering, pulse-quickening edit. How you imagine these episodes *feeling* when you dream about them as a kid. I was thinking WOW, we are blessed right now. As fans, we are blessed. Unbelievable to me, who grew up when animated episodes would drop once every ten years, that now projects like this are funded. This is a cheaply made serialised television show from the 1960s, this is all hugely unlikely. So I was actually speechless seeing people complain about it online. Hordes of fans my age, with petty, entitled complaints. They must all be wrestling with something dark. You want the full 7 episodes? Girl go watch them. Are people insane now? Is this just the age of the anti-fan? Have you ever felt joy? I feel like we are so lucky, in the grand scheme of things, to be getting something like this. WAKE UP THE DOLLS. It was good!!
Honestly another 15 minutes would have probably fixed a lot of pacing issues but also thats 20% of the current run time so like it might have been stressful and its great as is.
Absolutely no problem with colourisation of older classic who as long as the originals are still easily accessible. I’m not against the “cut down versions” either however instead of one big 75 minute version, I’d rather have a two parter that’s 30 minutes each so we don’t get that rushed feeling at any point. My big problem is when editing of or the addition of new dialogue gets inserted. It’s a slippery slope... I also don’t want this to take away from getting lost episodes animated. Troughton is my favourite classic doctor, and it’s upsetting that not all of his stuff is there the way it was when it was aired.
Less then 10 minutes per each Episode? It could olny be a Bonus Track on a Bluray for me. Fortunalety i own the british an the german DVD set with the first 4 storylines. i cant wait till the next animated storyline comes out on DVD. See ya ...
Like the idea of the new Dalek dialogue as a way to tie it into this story Dalek mythos. Overall I'm looking forward to this blu-ray. Your review has made me even more enthusiastic. If it weren't for the missing episodes The Invasion would seem an obvious Troughton to get the treatment. As such I'd go with The Mind Robber, especially as like the Invasion the DVD is old and a better restoration is probably possible these days. As for Hartnell the two complete Darek stories seem obvious but I'd sooner see the Aztecs or the Sensorites (a really underrated story that as you say could benefit from tightening the pace and spook factor)
I felt much the same - very impressed with the colourisation technology and overall I think the pacy new edit actually improved the story in many ways. Being born in 1963 myself I'm actually the same age as Doctor Who is but even I find a lot of the older stuff a bloody hard watch at times. So yes - more of the same please and make it snappy! This is by far the best Who channel on TH-cam by the way - thank you Josh.
I watched this live with my wife, she found the edit confusing and lost track of what was going on. I had difficulty with the music/soundtrack which firstly was excessive as it seemed to in very scene. And then loud so I had difficulty with the dialogue. As a celebration for the 60th it failed for me and this project was disappointing. Personally it came across as something that could have been simply being overdone. What would have been good would to have "an unearthly child" get transmitted at the same time it showed in 1963, but looks like Stef Coburn has put paid to that idea. I have ordered the blu-ray but so I can get (I hope) great versions of the original 60s episodes. There were special edits of stories in the 70s, of course. Not a great story but one, in my opinion, a better candidate for editing and colorizing even would be "The Dominators". With extra Quarks :)
For the new colourisations I would quite like to see The Dalek Invasion of Earth (obvs) or The Azteks (imagine how gloriously gold it could be!) for Hartnell, Enemy of the World (Australia represent!) or The War Games (obvs) for Troughton, and I think now that they have a colourosation pipeline we can finally get episode 1 of Invasion of the Dinosaurs in good colours And of missing episodes hooo BOY could you imagine the colours for Marco Polo!
Just watched it and would you say I missed out on much as a Who enthusiast not watching the original episodes and this being my first introduction to the story? Really don't feel like going through the narrative all again just for purity sake, I'm assuming this was the story on a surface level
There's a second release coming this year? Nice. Hope they don't cut it down as much as this one, though. I understand why it was cut down, but as you said, there are issues with pacing near the end.
Another great video as always! Wasn't sure about checking out the colorization-some of the color choices did seem a bit too gaudy IMO & more appropriate to Star Trek/late 60's Who vs. early 60's Who and while The Daleks could use some trimming, wasn't sure about a 75-minute cutdown-but you've definitely sold me on it, will have to check out the colorization soon. As for future colorizations, for The Hartnell Era I'd have to go with The Aztecs, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Romans, The Web Planet, The Chase, The Ark and The War Machines; for Troughton's era, I'd have to go with Tomb of The Cybermen, The Ice Warriors, The Enemy Of The World, The Web of Fear, The Mind Robber, The Seeds of Death and The War Games (which could maybe have a two hour edit instead of 75 minutes?)
As usual, I 100% agree with everything you said! I think the mind rober would be a fantastic episode to be colourised considering all the different set pieces they go through in the episode, plus its a pretty solid story overall! And technically they already cut it down for the tales from the tardis episodes so all they need to do is add a spalsh of colour!
Great review, thanks for your thoughts...🙌🏻🎉🎊🎆 Something very strange happened to me whilst watching this, I'm not sure if it was the editing of pace in the last 30mins but I ended up rooting for the Daleks to win 🤔❔❓I didn't experience this when I watched the original, I think, the pacing actually made me more sympathetic to the Daleks as they where in there city, peaceful Thalls outside... but due to the frantic pacing of the 2nd half... I was even at one stage thinking, what's happening here...? It oddly made me think that the Doctor & his mates just popped-up & started an insurrection on what was a previously peaceful planet... I was actually rooting for the poor Daleks, even the small one they dragged out of the the Dalek... wow...🤔 Colour great, editing in the 2nd half felt rushed & all over the place... Regardless of this however... anything classic, colored or animated from Doctor Who I will pay for... 👌🏻🤑 Next one The Web Planet please..... I love that one, an underrated gem 💎🐝🐜🐝🐜🐝
I loved the colourisation of this classic episode ^^ This was an amazing way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the show ^^ I loved the original 7 part story and I loved what they did then but this version at 75 mins makes me appreciate this serial more, I loved how they focused on the major parts of the original story and also the pacing of this version is an improvement on the original 7 part storys pacing ^^ Great video as always ^^
I personally found the new edit really difficult to watch, though I enjoyed the colourisation I thought that looked amazing I’m glad it exists it’s a cool experiment and hopefully they can learn from it going forward. I would be annoyed if they’d George Lucased the original and you couldn’t watch it anymore, but they haven’t it all exists simultaneously. I think if the original has been preserved why not experiment with it
Been over 10 years since I watched the 7. Watched the Cushing film recently and I think this worked well and the story made as much sense (if not more) than the Cushing film.
I really liked the coloring but I was mixed on the edit and the music. My biggest issue though was some of the cuts introduced continuity issues. I feel like it was a big mistake to cut them discovering and removing the security camera. Without it there's no explanation for how the Daleks knew what they were saying early on but later have no idea they are planning an escape. They literally use the removed security camera as part of their escape but you have no idea where they got it from if you've only watched the colourised version.
I’ve never watched a William Hartnell episode before, and I absolutely loved the colouring I thought the editing/pacing was great, and I was really into it at first. The episode did kinda lose me during the montage breakout scene but overall I really enjoyed it!
Great video mate! Always love how well made these videos are. War games would be crazy, that in colour would be beautiful as. I know it’d have to be done but not sure if I could stand an edited version of it, all parts are gold.
This is a pipe dream cause the last episode is missing, but I’d love to see The Tenth Planet in color SOLELY because seeing the first ever regeneration story colorized would be mesmerizing. Plus they already a base to pull colors from thanks to Twice Upon a Time!
_The Mind Robber_ would be my personal choice as one of my favourite _Who_ stories of all time, there's more visual variety for the colourists to do their magic, and the more people exposed to the bizarre mid story Jamie recast the better. I think _Tombs_ makes more commercial sense, as the only extant 60s Cybermen story and a cut down edit would be less jarring on a 4 parter

Psychedelic colour for The Web Planet! It could really benefit from a tighter edit too.
i think this is absoultley a story that could do with an enhancement and colorisation and an edit. However.. the whole smeared screen effect is going to make that nigh on impossible
If they could cut it down to about 10 minutes, I'd love it. Such a snoozefest! 🤣🤣
I did a cutdown of Web Planet a bunch of years back. Got it down to 63 minutes. It's not perfect - some story points are a bit of a mess - but it's a lot more watchable than the original. Still not enormously watchable, but a lot more watchable. 🤣
Fixed the wonky TARDIS landing too.
I showed my partner this version as their first experience of ‘The Daleks’ and while they liked it for the most part, they thought the story still dragged in places. Which I found fascinating and also made me thankful I didn’t think to show them the original story before now. 💀
That's interesting!
I’d choose either enemy of the world or the mind robber to be colourised next
Lol.
Oo yeah, I totally agree with The Mind Robber or the War Games, both of which would lend themselves to some great psychedelic 60’s colours!
Totally agree on the music, bit over the top on some scenes, both in volume and sometimes being distractingly bombastic, but I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed it, it’s just nice to see something familiar but so different.
I really like the idea of cutting down some of these serials to movie length. Maybe 90 minutes would be better than 75
MInd Robber would be perfect to animate. They could get even more surreal with doing funky things in the backgrounds, and make the wide cast feel more interesting.
You mean colorize.
Personally
The idea of colouring mind robber is fun to me but that's because I always envision it being half coloured
As in the doctor, Zoe, Jamie and the master
They don't belong there and the characters are mostly from the written word so seems right to keep them the way it was
The only one I feel should be brightly coloured would be the carcus, he's from the future too so that wouldn't feel out of place
I imagine they will do Tomb of the Cybermen as the Troughton color story. Perhaps they could finally fix up the color on the first episode of Invasion of the Dinosaurs while they're at it for The Collection?
Hope so. To both of your suggestions. 😉
I am glad you liked it. I find it fun that the colors for the Dalek stuff is similar to Peter Cushing movies. Thank you for the video!
Thanks Josh! I have to be honest, I absolutely loved it, and that mad crazy edit is a true guilty pleasure of mine. More please BBC!
Happy days. Keep well.
Watching this gave me an idea for a 2 hour condensed reconstruction of "The Daleks Master Plan" but idk what to cut out.
I would like to see Tomb of the Cybermen colourised .
Another fine video from the Official Josh Snares Channel.
That's the magic of Doctor Who right there.
the wink is EVERYTHING
Just going about my morning and realised Snares had posted- yet another video that slaps top tier doctor who content 👌
🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Josh (and by extension the crew that actually did the work) for bringing the colourisations into existence, your service is greatly appreciated
💕💕
It looks amazing but I wanted it longer
Yeah, I wish it was a good 2 hour movie. 75 minutes just seems way too short to do the story justice.
4:27 why does Susan have no head??
She does have head but that second she's looking down at the floor and her dark hair blends with the black of hartnell jacket.
@@elliot5569 oh wow I never caught that lol. Her upper body still looks so straight
It was like my eyes were expecting one thing and seeing another 😆 im hoping for Tomb this year ☺️
I completely forgot this happened -- deliberately -- and you just had to remind me of it 😂
The edit was obnoxious and confusing and made me feel like I was on drugs unfortunately 😢
Thanks for everything you do :-)
I know we've just had a Dalek episode in colour, but I would love Dalek Invasion of Earth in colour to act as a companion piece to the Daleks.
Not a bad one to cut-down for the plebs either.
I speak as someone who has experienced trying to get my Bollywood-action-used cousins to sit and watch back in the late 1990s.

What Dr. Who story is the red and blue capped Daleks from?
I never knew they had then in the old series, other than the movie Daleks
The red and blue daleks shot is from the dalek's masterplan.
Funnily enough, I don’t really listen to many of the first Doctor era Big Finish
If I’m going for BF, i usually go 5, 6 or 10. Sometimes 3 or 7, rarely 8.
@@JoshSnares rarely 8?!? I don’t know if I can support you anymore/j 😭 watching your videos got me into classic who and BF, personally 1,2,6 and 8 are my frequents rn
I LOVE eight, but after Dark Eyes, it's just too much to keep up with haha@@thebrokentable7554
Yet another Great review from Josh !! 😊loved the colourisation, but it was cut down too much and new music was a bit too much 😞
I watched this with my partner who is indifferent to Who and he loved it!
Thank you as always Josh for your insight and for your always entertaining videos! You're a huge part of my Who experience and I am truly grateful 👋
That color of blue on the Dalek's body dots? Morticia Addams said it best in the film "Addam's Family Values:"
"...all that I can forgive.
I love that story so much, but yeah, it's a daunting project, I'm sure...
the sound effects were quite odd, especially the Resurrection prison gun sound , thanks for the video
Great review. I loved Daleks in colour asvit was a brand new experience. I hope they colour War Games, Web Planet or Tenth Planet
Ooh I like. As long as the originals are not lost I’m really excited to see the old episodes colorised. How do you even do that
I wish people would point out how Skaro looks just like the Peter Cushing Skaro. That was great and very subtle
Yeah the hallways were very inspired for sure!
Two Josh Snares videos in one day?
It's a good one for the gays
i aim to please 😌
I'm not sure your worries about tomb being too grey/white for colourisation matters too much given the first colourisation ignores the line "everything is so white and ashen", still in the edit, as the crew explore a funky colourful forest. I'm sure the team will just do hot pink tombs and lime green cybermen if they want to, given that.
omg hot pink tombs??? the Barbiefication of Tomb of the Cybermen??? i'm not gonna lie, I love that 😅 SO WRONG, but fun!

I do think Toom of the Cybermen will be next, especially with the final shot of The daleks colonization showing the 2nd Doctor in colour from the same story.
Oooh! Didn't think about that final shot, good point!
I’d like to see The War Games as Two feature length movies with minimal edits
we are so back
LOVED this release.
See ya ...
Yeah I think 10 minutes is a bit too rough, 15 is the shortest, I'd think!
Sorry about the garbled first paragraph. Can't edit comments posted on my phone.
Honestly I wish they didn't replace the incendental music with a new soundtrack because I honestly dig that original creepy 60s electronic music
For the new colourisations I would quite like to see The Dalek Invasion of Earth (obvs) or The Azteks (imagine how gloriously gold it could be!) for Hartnell, Enemy of the World (Australia represent!) or The War Games (obvs) for Troughton, and I think now that they have a colourosation pipeline we can finally get episode 1 of Invasion of the Dinosaurs in good colours
And of missing episodes hooo BOY could you imagine the colours for Marco Polo!
Just watched it and would you say I missed out on much as a Who enthusiast not watching the original episodes and this being my first introduction to the story? Really don't feel like going through the narrative all again just for purity sake, I'm assuming this was the story on a surface level
Great vid. Love the Daleks in colour. Thanks Josh x.
personally i'd like to see a cut-down Myth Makers 😎
Don’t worry the bbc decided to cut all four episodes. You can’t watch any of them now :)
It’s not like the black and white version will no longer exist.
I personally think it’s great.
I personally found the new edit really difficult to watch, though I enjoyed the colourisation I thought that looked amazing
I’m glad it exists it’s a cool experiment and hopefully they can learn from it going forward. I would be annoyed if they’d George Lucased the original and you couldn’t watch it anymore, but they haven’t it all exists simultaneously.
I think if the original has been preserved why not experiment with it
I quite liked it, and so did my 11 year old son who I am slowly introducing to classic Who
Been over 10 years since I watched the 7. Watched the Cushing film recently and I think this worked well and the story made as much sense (if not more) than the Cushing film.
Love a new Josh Snares video :3
Colourizing the 60's who is brilliant idea ... giving the classics a new life
I really liked the coloring but I was mixed on the edit and the music.
I’ve never watched a William Hartnell episode before, and I absolutely loved the colouring
I thought the editing/pacing was great, and I was really into it at first. The episode did kinda lose me during the montage breakout scene but overall I really enjoyed it!
That's exciting!
The original Daleks is free on Tubi in the U.S. !!!!!!
Great video mate! Always love how well made these videos are. War games would be crazy, that in colour would be beautiful as. I know it’d have to be done but not sure if I could stand an edited version of it, all parts are gold.
I really hope they colourise The Aztecs. Few early stories would benefit as much from colorful costumes as that one.
The Sensorites would be a fabulous choice, especially because their connections to the Ood Sphere another episode to bring in new fans to Classic 🥳
I turned it off after about 25 minutes. I didn't think it looked that great at all and the sound was a problem for me also.

I’m eager to see this when it hits BluRay in the States
This is a pipe dream cause the last episode is missing, but I’d love to see The Tenth Planet in color SOLELY because seeing the first ever regeneration story colorized would be mesmerizing. Plus they already a base to pull colors from thanks to Twice Upon a Time!
that would be incredible!
The I player is not a free service in the UK, you need to have a tv licence to watch it if you are a resident of the UK.
Josh, do you know if this story was upscaled? I know Riches' previous clip of this story was upscaled.
i love color, but i hate cutting things.
