- Sometimes it feels as though I’m living a double life... a life where the only constant is change, and nothing is ever really here to stay. In this video, we go from chasing stability in Santa Fe, New Mexico to a client/influencer shoot for Mazda in Santa Barbara, California. Then to Taos, New Mexico before driving directly into a high wind warning in canyon country, Utah. Thanks for being here ♡

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

And the way you put the visual content together and the way you reflect on your experiences, feels so familiar, as if the muse I had to let go found another kindred spirit. It’s not the first time I’ve felt this way. As a girl, I knew the natural world was seriously threatened. I had a dream to document everything. A picture for every creature and plant, an encyclopedia of Earth’s creations so we wouldn’t forget what we would lose. I didn’t do it. I became a mother instead. But I’m so gratified to see another is doing his absolute best on the project. I think Life and muse seeks expression and is content that it’s vehicle be anyone willing and capable. And you are. You’ve a beautiful gift. It’s so precious and I’m very happy to enjoy its fruits. I feel incredibly blessed by what you share here.
Don't give up the dream! Hubby and I are 68 and 70 and about to take our camper van on a 10,000 mile journey from TN to Alaska and back. You don't have to be young!

So, yes...it makes me and others appreciate what you and others do by sharing your experiences...adventures. Always love your content. Often think how some of your shots would make magnificent wall hangings. The adobe house house with the window reflection of the sunset, in this video, was SO PERFECT! I thought of it instantly!!!

I feel like my current state of mind always finds its way to the surface through these voiceovers, which doesn’t always coincide with the footage. But I try 🤓. One of these days I’ll catch up and post closer to real-time

The duality of life seems to always leave us with this thought or thoughts that we should be doing something else, when we're doing exactly what we want to be doing in the moment.

It’s all a double life-sometimes many lives, we introverts lead on a daily basis. The face we show the world, the private side we only show ourselves and all the space in between. Thanks Christian for showing up in my world🌿🌀✨

The best feeling when editing is the moment when it switches from “How in the world do I string all these random clips together” to “Oh I love how this story is unfolding.” What viewers don’t always realize is that we don’t always know the story either while we’re shooting. That comes later.
Also - those storm clips were absolutely stunning and powerful. You so accurately captured that feeling of mountain storms on the road! Love it.

Your videos are always incredible, so clearly you know how to tell the story despite your challenges of going through weeks of footage while doing it. Maybe the “double life” gives you some additional balance. Your aren’t trapped in all the elaborate day to day consumerism. Rather you experience the world in its most natural state and then enjoy short periods of that glitz and glamor. What you do is amazing!

Rather than a "double-life", one could look at it from the viewpoint of a sort of "80/20" rule, (at least that's how I view and live it), meaning I prefer to spend roughly 80%+ in 'voluntary simplicity' and 20% or less in a more 'luxurious' lifestyle. I much prefer this to the continuous typical 'middle class' lifestyle most of the developed world participates in, which is a constant 'dopamine high' mixed with 9-5 wage dependency stuck to a single job, which is not for me (been there, done that). This 'double life' makes one more appreciative of things and keeps us from losing the novelties of it. Great video, I enjoy watching both of your channels!
Living a double life seems to just be twice as good to me. I, for one of many, appreciate you taking the time to extraordinarily tell your stories, and the 'pictures', oh my, the pictures... Thanks, as always, for sharing!

I think your double life was a great way of putting it. Having the ability to go from one "life" to another helps ground you. The best part is that you get to look back on your adventures. Some of us forget what we did yesterday (because it's all the same).

... just opened my you-tube tab and was greeted with this ... glad because as usual your skill at capturing and building your story is stellar ... you missed a thing or two, where were the snowshoes, smilin, you sure experienced a few changes in climate. .... have recently gotten back on a motorbike and your sidewind experience of the challenge of staying between the lines brought the memory forward of on of my first rides, I wondered during the gusts if my pegs were going to scrap the asphalt .... for 800 bucks a night, laughing, in this day and age, that is a mighty small shower-head .. great picture though. ... trying to think what was my favorite in this video . ... toss up between the movie set stillness of the Santa Barbara street scape footage and looking over the mountains capturing the sunsets .... thx for sharing Christian .. as always .. never quit dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

As someone also on the TH-cam journey (I make videos in a slightly similar spirit as yours but much newer to it) when you talked about editing and sharing with such a delay, GIRL I FEEL THAT. It is a strange way to relate to time and to story-telling especially when you want to create something honest and real. Doing that right now with a video with footage from beginning of April when I took a road trip to some seriously magic and stunning spots. Also just want to say thank you for talking about the contrast of your life -- it's powerful for me at this moment in my life as I prepare to give up the stationary life I've had, to embrace a new chapter that will challenge the traditional concepts of home...and also my own. Also thank you for continuing to be an inspiration visually, stunning work.

Yes! It’s kind of a hard thing to explain, but a very real challenge at times. Especially if something heavy is on my heart, but I need to piece together what was a happy moment - or vice versa. It almost feels fake. I’m starting to think the only answer is to film and edit in real time. Which is soooo much easier said then done 🙃 Here’s to you and your next chapter - sounds exciting!!

Hi Christian, I started watching your videos about a month ago. Like others, I find your videos therapeutic. Your footages are mesmerizing and storytelling is genuine. Lovely to see both you and Nathaniel work together. You guys are such a great team. I went to Jasper and Banff (Alberta, Canada) recently and just could not believe how majestic snow peaked mountains and lakes were. I am inspired to travel and explore more. It must not be easy sometimes, but please keep up the good work. And safe travels.

It amazes me how moved I am whenever I watch your videos, you are a good story teller and a good editor? or director? The mood, the music, it just works for me. I also always get the feeling like I want to go out there, live on the road and get an adventure but deep down I know that I can never live that kind of life since I'm a person of habit and routine. I would go crazy after the 2nd week.
So just travel then. You don’t have to live on the road to experience life.

A nice mix, for us subscribers Christian! I can only imagine the mixed emotions, with the scenes, lifestyle and locations! After spending 3 months in southern Arizona...yet having never been to New Mexico, I'll have to give it a go some day. Thanks for sharing your 'storm' Christian, as well as the scene's well above the clouds, as they're always a treat, for those of us that rarely get to those elevations! Myself, hoping to get to the Palouse region of Washington, with it's rolling hills and lovely scenes, as I have been to Utah many times, and will continue my quest for the beauty of the state in future years. Zion and Bryce where spectacular last month, and yet it was just a start of so many choices of such a lovely landscape! Stay safe, and thanks for your great editing experience Christian, as it seems to only get better, not that it was ever not!

Nicely put together, and spectacular footage. The double life, at least for me, keeps a balance between delightful moments of total privilege and the need for complete solitude, and the simplicity of camping. Oh that wind storm! Nice to have a hard sided camper!

If Mazda made an all electric model, I would consider getting one. I like the look of their vehicles and you guys showcased all their best angles.

Wow, I love the video of the storms changing with the music and the lightning strikes, and with the morning sun over the clouds on the Mazda shoot. I've always felt I'm an introverted extrovert too, but you're the first one I've ever heard use the term. So professional and sensitive storytelling. I started out in photography (BFA, Photo Illustration, Rochester Institute of Technology), but now do only personal work when I'm travelling. Wish I had stuck with it. You inspire us. Thank you!

The beauty that you share with the world is why I keep visiting your channel. So many of us are stuck in our box, our virtual prisons, in a routine the provides so little joy. What you do helps remind us all what is out there and how beautiful our world is when we can break free from the grind.
