  • Lately, I’ve been alone. Alone with my thoughts, alone with my fears, just.. alone. This one is a little more vulnerable than the rest. Thanks for being here, I appreciate you ♡

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

Hey all, just want to pop in here to say thank you for all the love and kind comments ♡ I know many of you come here for carefree vanlife content, but when editing this footage l found myself stuck in the space of ‘what do I actually want to create’ vs ‘what will people want to see.’ It’s scary putting the vulnerable stuff out there, but sometimes it just feels right. And if it happens to resonate with even just one of you, then it was worth bringing to life. Anyway, all that to say - I’m so incredibly grateful for this community and the space to share this journey with you ♡ ps my current footage is a whole different mood. Chipmunks may be involved 🐿

The thoughts and imagery you shared are congruent with what I experience day to day living in the city, so it isn't just vanlife. What resonates for me from your video is a feeling of sadness and loneliness, even though ironically I have many friends. Thank you for sharing.

You pretty much blow vulnerable out of existence. Too profound to explain? The way out is in. Are you working on your book yet? CS On the Road to Living Free. Taking responsibility for your own life outcomes is a fundamental step to being free. Nice job, if one can get it.

So many who live the van life think they are showing us the world, but in fact, their videos are about themselves. But you show us the world. Your photography and videos are wonderful - you capture where you are like no one else I've seen. Thank you for taking me places I may never go and showing them to me in a way I would never see.

I wholeheartedly agree with this observation of the imagery and narrative. Thanks to Christian for being vulnerable - it’s risky to make that choice but that “leap” can produce authentic inspiration for others who want to embark on this kind of journey but are apprehensive, questioning authenticity of the journey. Being raw and real is the courageous way to go and it can bless others with courage as well.

The idea of a nomadic life style was so appealing to me 25 years ago before TH-cam, and DSLR cameras. I use to spend the entire summer living in a large tent at a campground I use to work at. If I hadn't met a wonderful woman who modernized me, I could see myself doing something very similar to this focusing around my wildlife photography. Your cinematic abilities are impeccable. Your on camera presents is flawless as well.

There is a scene in the Ghibli animation, “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, where the protagonist Kiki inexplicably loses her magic powers, just as she is going through the doldrums. Her painter friend, who lives alone in the woods, invites Kiki to her cabin, and together they talk about life, ambitions, and creating things. What Kiki’s painter friend tells Kiki about sometimes letting go and not trying to get somewhere or achieving something, has stuck with me to this day, 30 years after I watched the film. Even at 61, I feel that I always have more to learn about my place in the world, and what really matters about living. I’m going through cancer recovery right now, after 5 months of grueling treatment, and lots of loss of confidence in my ability to live as freely as I have most of life. Now I’m building back the small stepping stones to the open road. Thank you, Christian, for the many beautiful videos you’ve made, and your honesty about your life.

Happy 37th! The mind is a crazy thing, (and that's when you're looking at yourself sanely). Asking questions, being curious in the why of things is always noise in the background. Interpreting when anything of that noise is useful, is the real sign of judgement. Living with the question, interacting with it, being with is are all signs of competence. I'm guessing by most measures you're on a fulfilling track. What more can anyone ask for in life?

  • @just_joc

Christian, "...what you really want to create" resonates profoundly with the audience (and good karma) you naturally attract. Your little Ram van and feathered dreamcatcher serve roughly the same purpose as the accessories and vestments of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen as he presented his television show "Life is Worth Living." Whether you care to call it Jung's collective unconscious or Teilhard de Chardin's noosphere, you are part of a cloud of souls who appreciate you as a precious kindred spirit. You are a refreshing reminder that old souls are not as alone as they can feel at times. I do wish there were more of us, but that makes ones like you all the more precious. Thank you so much for sharing your insights, your experiences...and yourself with those of us who feel less alone and more assured after hearing you share your heart.

Hi Christian I've watched a lot of van life videos to get ideas, but this was unexpected in a truly great way and thanks so much for sharing. I did four years traveling back in the 80s all by road in Asia Africa and South America in old British 4x4 army trucks with a bunch of paying passengers in the back; so I'm old now but there's still time to get a van and refresh, this was a beautifully presented video in all respects, you totally nailed it, I loved it and it gave me a huge "let's go again" feeling

From Québec...I bought a VW Eurovan 22 years ago, my longest trip was 21 months road trip from USA east coast-west coast-alaska and back to Québec in the reverse trip...USA. 52,000 Wonderfull Km by myself and some pick ups along the way. I used Helpx as a change of scenery...very good. I hope you keep going for another while...you are sheltered from all the crazy things going on in your country and in the world. I also backpacked in Asia in this 12 year period. Discovered China as everyone should know it...breathtaking. Still have my van ( 202,000 km) and backpack (with wheels now ) giving my old back a break. Soon will be able to hit the road again after this pandemic calms down...back to Asia. Bon Vents to you...lovely human being.

I think you're doing fine. We're all on the road to nowhere and the only true meaning to life is being alive. If you can live authentically and be indifferent to what others think you should be doing, you're as free as can be. You can certainly pick a spot to be alone. Beautiful photography. Good luck Christian.
