After a shocking defeat against Argentina in the Semi-Final, it was time for Team USA to face Lithuania in the Bronze medal match of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games basketball tournament. Lithuania had already defeated the USA in the group stage, but could they do it again?

The 2004 USA men's basketball team is viewed as a failure due to poor roster construction and coaching, and rightfully so. But you know what? I actually respect these players. They easily could have just gone into the tank, but they still managed to win the bronze and bring something back for themselves and their country. Team USA has never failed to medal in any Olympics they entered, and this flawed team did just enough to keep that streak intact.
Yes that humiliating first game 19 point loss to Puerto Rico was team USA's worst game ever but after that they went 5-2 including wins over the 2006 WC gold and silver medalists Spain and Greece and this revenge game against Lithuania who beat them in pool play.

pennyccw Don’t forget Tim Duncan, he along with Iverson was with the US squad for the 2003 FIBA America’s Championship, which they won gold, punching the US ticket to the 2004 Olympics.

In terms of pure basketball skills and basketball IQ Lithuania's so much better. Basketball really is a spot in which athleticism compensates for teammwork and systems. Too bad the best athletes in the world turn out to be "better" basketball players even though skillwise they're much inferior to players that are considered not as good as them.

duncan was completely useless in international play. his style was ill suited for that type of basketball.
I mean, only because the international refs of this era were absolutely horrible. Duncan is one of the best defensive players in the history of basketball. But because of incompetent refs, he was in foul trouble early in seemingly every game. There's a reason he never came back.
