For me 8:37 is probably the best part of the best Tool song, like a grand finale. Seeing this guy killing it while also throwing his sticks in the air brings smile to my face, mad respect 🙌
idk if I’d called that 15/4 necessarily. More like 5 bars of 3/4. I know sort of synonymous but not how it would be notated (though I’m just a hobbyist) What’s extra crazy is that the bass drum is in 5/8. Justin’s low G notes are in this 5/8 pattern while his accents as you’ve said are highlight each third beat of the 3/4 patter. Also, I believe Danny is doing Swiss triplets with his hands that are in 4. Triple polyrhythm absolutely insane and still sounds sexy and musical
I keep coming back to this video. I've seen it like 20 times, and I'm not even a drummer. The percussion in this song is just so good I have to see someone play it. You do an amazing job!

For someone who doesn't drum for a living, yet to be able to cover this song so immaculately, to almost perfection which is an impeccable standard of being able to play the drums - you inspire me man - whatever it is I want to be better at, I'm just going to try that much harder after witnessing this. I can only imagine how many tries it would've taken you to hit all those notes with such precision and with such attention to detail - mind blowing. Truly masterful man - thanks for this!
My favorite thing about this video is that it's a cover, meaning all the comments about how extraordinary this performance is all ends up being a homage to the original man who made it. Danny really is just on another level. The Olympic Gold medalist all-timer of drumming up there with Peart.
Hope you know John, whenever I feel like listening to Rosetta Stoned, I play this video instead of just the song on my phone. Makes it a million times better than the song already is.
John, this is amazing! In the description you come across as very humble and down to earth. You are emulating one of the greatest drummers out there, Danny Carey, whom I sure would be blown away by how good you are. (1) You're definitely not lazy, the lengths you went to to get all the details correct is insane! And (2) you definitely did the song justice.
“Holy Fucking Shit” is right. There’s so much going on in the first three minutes of this masterpiece. One of the most impressive covers I’ve ever seen.
Who else here is excited for august 30, 2019? New Tool album means new Dannys drums, Adams guitar & Justins bass to study, to understand, amazed and dwell in to. I'm gonna be so happy.
This is an outstanding performance! Most people watching this probably don't understand the effort and dedication it takes to reach this level of perfection. As a musician it took me 34 years to get close to perfection and after all this time, I still feel I have a lot to learn on my instrument. I play triangle.
I’ll be honest. For whatever reason, I wasn’t expecting much. But I’ll be damned this dude made this song seem brand new after all these years. I didn’t realize just how drum centric this song is until seeing someone cover it beat for beat like this. Good shit man. Keep it up. 👊
FINALLY! Someone does it with all its details. Good sound. Well filmed. All my respects, great job! You won a follower just for this haha Greetings from Argentina
So good to see this and to read your opinion about Rosetta Stoned. One of my favorite songs of all time, a masterpiece in my book, both technically and lyrically. And you absolutely crushed it! :D
Imagine fucking up an 11 video drum cover because you were goofing around with the sticks. Now, imagine being so fucking badass and good at what you do that you don't even flinch. Johnkew, you LITERALLY rock, man!
Took me over 5 weeks of constant practicing to nail this with bass guitar. I can only imagine how much work it took to play this with drums. Respect!!!!
Abonodi guess I'm lucky to be a guitar player because most of the playing in this track is retarded. I mean, it sounds awesome, but you can almost feel Adam's skill reaching its limit
Like many others, I have been waiting years for you to serve this one up John. When the notification popped up on my phone earlier today, it was so hard for me to not drop everything I was doing and watch it. But, I patiently waited till the end of the day, kids and Wife in bed, time to rock. Vincent Vega might say this is a bold statement, but I think RS is my favorite Tool drum track. There is just so much going on. It's like a 7 course meal at a 4-star restaurant...one tasty dish after another. I've come to expect greatness from you sir and yet again, that is exactly what you delivered. Was every single note carbon copied from Danny's track? Maybe not...might be closer to 99.5%. But as for energy and spirit --> that was 110%. It was literally dripping off your sticks. I am usually not a fan of stick tricks, but your flips took me completely by surprise and felt like more of a celebration of how awesome you had nailed it thus far. I'd swear I could hear you screaming "shit yeah" in your head. Know what? I was too. 😊 Dude, I could go on and on. I'll end by saying, I seriously appreciate your craft and effort and I get pure joy out of watching you "at work". You keep uploading 'em, I'll keep watching 'em! Thanks John!!!
Thanks for writing this my friend, it is so gratifying to know that these videos are fun to watch. If just a fraction of the feeling I get when playing it can be felt while watching it, then that makes me very happy. I'm not big into stick flips either, but I have to tell you, they felt really good on that part. Kind of letting the energy take over.
One of the most technical songs ever to play, nails it perfectly. Master of his craft. Why not toss in a few stick flips while we're at it 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎🤘🏻🤘🏻epic epic epic. I've easily watched this 100 times over the past year haha
Not many can keep time with left foot and consistently play 3 separate signatures at the same time. You can. Nice! Definitely one of Tool's most intrusive parametric pieces.
I have a question you can hopefully answer: Do you remember recording this? I mean, do you remember literally sitting there and playing this? Because you were IN THE ZONE, man. It's fascinating to watch.
we drummers are never in the zone, to play something like this you need to be so absolute and be aware of every minute detail, if you slip into comfort on the drums you will quite literally kill a song like this
OMG….Danny Carey is by far my most favorite drummer of all time!! And you are by far the absolute best I’ve seen that has covered Danny’s drumming! You make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck just watching you! You are amazing! You are a joy to watch and I love seeing your passion when you play! You just love to play and it shows in your videos when you play! Keep up the hard work and continue rocking like you do! You have a beautiful talent and you will continue to grow in your craft!
Impresionante! Nunca pensé que alguien iba a atreverse a sacar esta joya de canción. Debe ser la mas comoleja de toda la discografía de Tool. Mis respetos!! 👏👏
So there's a chick who has 6 million views on a tool cover, that is completely off. Not even close. You did Danny Carey justice. Actually mic'd the drums properly, 10/10 good job buddy!
Jayson Brady It really is a feminist related thing, to be completely honest, don’t ask me why it is, everytime a girl uploads anything musical related, and at first thought, far outside the usual females comprehension, people for some reason lose their shit in excitement and click like mad dogs. Really shows men are factually and realistically capable of doing much more masculine, complicatedesque things, a man uploads something like this, the interest isn’t really sprung up, it’s almost expected for a male to be capable of pulling this off (generally speaking) so of course women are also going to click on it, it in some ways represents women, and their capabilities.

8:35 "I killed that section, please allow me to celebrate in joy with a couple gleeful stick flips."
Stick flips, tosses and spins are usually used as a method to keep track of timing or a counter so to speak. As well as to add a little flair.
That section of the song in my book is one of the most amazing musical pieces period.

Forgot to bring a pen to take notes....... been there done that.
Watching this just makes it unfathomable how Danny Carey writes this stuff out of thin air.
JackTheRipperSquid well said!
And how does he remember to play it the same every time (especially when the song is recently written)
Copious and equal amounts of jazz fusion, DMT and time spent locked in a dark room with naught but a kit.
These are probably the songs Danny spends alot of time on before recording.
Actually according to Danney, he uses sacred geometry in order to develop his patterns. Not completely sure how he does that, but that’s his technique
I honestly think this song has the best drumming I've ever heard in any type of rock music

There's a difference being hard to learn and hard to play. Nothing Carey does requires Mangini's hands, but does require plenty of groove.
Clearly someone who doesn't understand musical time signatures, how much they change in this song, and how difficult that is for the drummer.
He's had at least 13 years to practice
Maynard: So Danny, what time signature will you play on?
Danny: 342145^321/21x4.5

My favorite thing about this video is that it's a cover, meaning all the comments about how extraordinary this performance is all ends up being a homage to the original man who made it. Danny really is just on another level. The Olympic Gold medalist all-timer of drumming up there with Peart.
Holy Gosh DAMN!!!!! IDK 🤷🏻 HOW I 4Got HOW GREAT THAT COVER IS !!!!! F Danny Man!!!! 🤘🏻John Kew will fit right IN!!!!!!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Hope you know John, whenever I feel like listening to Rosetta Stoned, I play this video instead of just the song on my phone. Makes it a million times better than the song already is.
A Triad cover would be awesome !
byPika I second this
I third this
8:38 when playing this cover unlocks super powers and you start to transcend
Exactly!! Absolutely incredible moment.
Best drum cover on youtube.
Sometimes, I think Danny Carey is up there doing John Kew covers.
😅
Who agrees that he should do Schism???
And third eye!
Why just narrow it down to one song? Let's just get the whole Tool catalog! lol
TRULY a Masterpiece John!! Spot on, you did it justice! Always a pleasure! ^_^
Thanks Matt - are you going to give this one a try?
johnkew Ha!... Think I'll leave this one alone ;)
More Tool though coming for sure! \m/
GOOSEBUMPS!!!
AMAZING!
I didn’t think it could be done properly by anyone but the man himself..
This is an outstanding performance! Most people watching this probably don't understand the effort and dedication it takes to reach this level of perfection. As a musician it took me 34 years to get close to perfection and after all this time, I still feel I have a lot to learn on my instrument. I play triangle.
Good on you brother!
8:39 - I sub for stick spins.
Awesome
I'm not a musician and I'm not a drummer but I like what I hear. I LOVE TOOL and this rendition is FANTASTIC. Well done Sir.👏👍
10/24/2023 .......thank you! Just found this..Amazing Job bro!! My favorite Tool song ever.
Simply amazing, 100% accurate cover of a masterpiece
I’ll be honest. For whatever reason, I wasn’t expecting much. But I’ll be damned this dude made this song seem brand new after all these years. I didn’t realize just how drum centric this song is until seeing someone cover it beat for beat like this. Good shit man. Keep it up. 👊
Did you see the drums only version? Yet another layer of awesomeness.
3:01 snare roll is mathematically (11/8) so sweet. Salute!
I've coming back to this from year to year, still the best in this platform!
2 years later with 2 years sober. Wish you where able to put out more feed because you are amazing and I love it.
This guy needs more subs and likes. I've never seen anyone who can cover Danny Carey so well.
One heck of HARDCORE stuff he pulls it off so precisely.
Loved this.
I watch this near daily, unbelievably impressive.
Amazing work! I'm an drummer but love playing this on guitar. Danny should be proud of you.
Still come back to this for that feeling of bliss that life continuously doesn't provide anymore
No matter how low my day drags me, this cover and any of Jon's work lifts my spirits and butters my soul.
You are the chosen one! This is fantastic!
Ridiculous, you are some sort of machine John!
Well done dude aha
It's fascinating to watch.
to be honest, I probably wouldn't.
Somewhere between the beginning and the stick flips, John just fucking ascended. It was amazing watching his conscious brain turn off.
@@cf453 Its the place we all aspire to get to, when playing a song.
we drummers are never in the zone, to play something like this you need to be so absolute and be aware of every minute detail, if you slip into comfort on the drums you will quite literally kill a song like this
7:04 is when the goosebumps start. You're welcome.
My life would be complete if you covered Triad
This guy has officially completed the drums. He's won
As a huge Danny Carey fan I can say he would greatly appreciate this. You killed it on invincible by the way!
You know you've ascended when you cover Danny Carey to perfection and still have time to flip your sticks.
It must be so satisfying to be able to play this on drums.
there is nothing more satisfying that those drum stick flips during the climax of the song.... damnnn props to you brother
What chick? What song? Tell us.
Thomas Ferraro Jr. probably Meytal
@@ifoldaa0078 Well said. Slightly harsh but in the best and truest way
@@ifoldaa0078 True but something you would be crucified for saying in today's day and age.
he actually did it, the absolute madman
by far best danny cover there is
i get chills. every. time. i. watch. this. cover. No cover can touch this. Show me that cover that matches this level of dedication
