This is an almost impossible task as the other 3 are masterful technicians in their own right which is a testament to the exceptional virtuosity of the gentle giant. I've listened to Tool for so long that I got so used to "hearing" the polyrhythms and my brain not reacting in a dischorded way to them. In a way, taking them for granted. And then I watched JUST the first two minutes of this before being blown away once again as I had so many years ago when I first listened to Tool. The sheer skill and mastery of being able to compartmentalize every limb in a different time sig. and pattern (and being able to SEE it) reinvigorated that amazement I had for just how special and talented each one of those members are and especially Danny. And you my friend have that same gift and are on the top tier. Awesome and thank you!
Yea tie it together so smoothly it doesn't stand out. Many other bands you feel that "off" beat (sorry i'm not literate in drum speak) where you thought the pattern would repeat, also sounds cool, but the way Tool plays it doesn't feel uncomfortable.
Straight up slayed it. Never lost the pocket, didn’t blow a fill rushing through it, just spot on every hit. Power and timing and intensity and dynamics right on the effin money... I’m genuinely impressed.
Just incredible. Everything is perfection. The tuning of the drums. The playing. If I close my eyes and just listen I'd swear this was Danny Carey playing. That's how good this is.
JOHN THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!! Dude you got me into Tool with your covers, glad to see you decided to grace us with another one your performances on YT. Nailed it per usual!
I've spent half my life on stage. I've never seen a drummer who can fill your potential as much as you do. You don't have great technique, but you have a great brain. In one word, "you are amazing".
I love that when you play Tool, you actually understand the emotion that is in it. You're not just covering a song, you're playing it with heart. soul, feeling and understanding. You're a powerful musician mate! Love from Australia.
They shared Beatos video - they are big dorks like us, you know someone is showing DC this. Cheers John killed it- shows how intricate that 7/3 or whatever you want to call it is. (14/6 I assume is how they count it)
John, That was immaculate. I cried my eyes out in a few parts because of how well you played it. That was a pleasure to watch. Thank you for spending countless hours practicing to make that what it was.
Totally agree. Not in a big rush to be the first to cover it sloppily. Patiently developed into a perfect performance before submitting it. Obvious deep understanding of the very complex yet subtle rhythms happening here
Finally !! You even included the synth part, what a legend Hey John, I'm dying to see a good drums cover from a prog metal song named "Vinushka" from Japanese band DIR EN GREY. I think you would love the drums on the Remastered version of it, would love to see you cover it ! I think it's very reminiscent of TOOL in a lot of ways Their latest release is also a 10min prog piece, absolutely gorgeous, named "The World of Mercy" Definitely check them out, you would make a long time dream come true with such a cover ! Man if you had a Patreon, I'd probably pay big bucks to make that happen
This is art man...nothing more nothing less. This is why TOOL is loved by a particular group of people. Few will understand...most of us will not...GOD i love this band.
This just shows how incredibly talented Danny is. All of the different time signatures on hands and feet. Blows my mind! With that said, John, you did perfect! You are immensely talented as well!
Yes, finally! Mind-blowing, absolutely gorgeous! I didn't know that the synthesizer part could be played on drums! 😱 Thank you, John, for your immensely gigantic work! Amazing! You are an example of dedication and hard-working... But I'm already looking forward to other songs (maybe, Descending next? 🤗).
I’ve been drumming my whole life, comparing your cover to others, there is no comparison. Every note is precise, its easy to see how much work you put in your covers. Amazing man.
I don't think you missed a beat! Sounds like a perfect rendition. I have been watching from time to time and I can't get over your discipline behind the kit!
God damn. It always amazes me the power of the human brain and what the bodys reflexes are capable of. I wish id started playing the drums when I was young. Amazing performance 👏
Hallelujah, I'm not religious by any means but I gladly throw in this one. Took you long enough to start recording again my friend. I have watched most of your other covers as well, time and time again and as usual you do deliver. I love the way your drumming makes these complex songs seem easy. If I may make a suggestion for you to drum to --> Anasthesize by Porcupine Tree. Fits right up your alley! Keep it up.
my favorite thing about this video, strangely (beyond the fantastic playing of course), is how loose and resonant the snare is. i noticed it on the original recording as well, and it's just so authentic... both in terms of the original recording on the part of johnkew, and on DC's part going with the theme of the song. john nailed it in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY.
I was always taught that Zeus was the god of Thunder, his name is actually Danny and he is American. John your Lateralus was my favourite but this is truly masterful. Looking forward to you taking us on a Chocolate Chip Trip sometime soon.
Dang, brother? Did you go to jail? Termikewter. Getting healthy and beyond is such a good feeling. Glad to see you making so many strides in life and making it look easy; amazing drummer, archaeologist, getting swole for parole, etc. The drums sound super natural and clean. It amazes me how much natural room sound you get in your mixes. As a drummer, its what I strive for; that medium room sound in m mix. Transient but still some boom. Watching this today made my day better. I can't wait to share this with the world, brotatoe chip
Great drumming is not about recklessly beating everything in front of you...playing unecessary drum fills...its about patiently executing with perfection. Great Job. Just loved it.
Mastery. Effortless mastery! Btw.....I wonder if Danny watches this and goes “aight, imma step up my game. These dudes figuring my sh*t too easily”. Knowing him, the answer is probably no. 😑
I'm a drummer of 30 years now. I love Tool since undertow. Your playing is sublime, the language you speak is beauty through your finesse and mastery of the instrument. Your CYMBALS are FANTASTIC,your kits timbre is excellent and natural. Subscribed immediately. I also play and build synths. Never stop doing what you do. You clarified parts on this song by demonstrating them as naturally and fluidly as the man himself. I'm recording later today and needed some drum inspiration. My son who I'm teaching drums will watch this later as this is his favorite song on the album. Thank you.

that is right, especially that Dizzy Ride, I already searched for it but its not available in my country i think :(
I know right? Sort of blown away by how incredible his cymbals sound here.
Was honestly about as hyped about this as I was about the album. This was so damn good John, keep up the great work!
I woke up to this notification and freaked! Told my gf if anyone can fill Danny's shoes, it's you! Killer job!
Anybody know if Danny himself has seen one of John's covers? Cause if not, he needs to...
Why would god need to watch someone imitate himself?
I agree. It would be cool to hear what he thought.
They shared Beatos video - they are big dorks like us, you know someone is showing DC this. Cheers John killed it- shows how intricate that 7/3 or whatever you want to call it is. (14/6 I assume is how they count it)
@Wilbur Wafer because its a compliment in one of its highest forms. Danny would appreciate it.
^At least you're self aware lol.
As a drummer. I feel Danny plays with so much passion and feeling. You can hear his soul in the percussion. Same with Tomas Haake
The duo polyrythme gods
John, That was immaculate. I cried my eyes out in a few parts because of how well you played it. That was a pleasure to watch. Thank you for spending countless hours practicing to make that what it was.
Totally agree. Not in a big rush to be the first to cover it sloppily. Patiently developed into a perfect performance before submitting it. Obvious deep understanding of the very complex yet subtle rhythms happening here
Can you at least wipe my mouth off, John?
2:40 that litttle build up gets me every time great cover 🔥
Finally !! You even included the synth part, what a legend
Hey John, I'm dying to see a good drums cover from a prog metal song named "Vinushka" from Japanese band DIR EN GREY. I think you would love the drums on the Remastered version of it, would love to see you cover it ! I think it's very reminiscent of TOOL in a lot of ways
Their latest release is also a 10min prog piece, absolutely gorgeous, named "The World of Mercy"
Definitely check them out, you would make a long time dream come true with such a cover !
Man if you had a Patreon, I'd probably pay big bucks to make that happen
He doesn't miss a beat....ever..literally
That was the least tool son* I’ve ever heard. It’s more like if nightwish was more black metal, hella gay.
Almost forgot to watch this today...
John Kew you did a brilliant job.
Holy moly, that 3 over 7 polyrhythm is insidiously difficult.
No. It's not. Only to drug addicts
@@behindthen0thing525 whhhhhhhhhhat
Behindthen0thing please show us your version. Very easy to play incorrectly I think is what your looking for there
8:50 = Best Drum/Guitar Groove Ever!!!!!
You are not fucking wrong my friend. Jesus.
Chuggity chug chug chuggity chug chug chug
@@jessewest2109 haha that actually made me laugh really hard
Dont forget that bass fuckin slappin
Here I am watching this again. All amazing sounding drums
The only person I like watching cover Tool. Been waiting for this one for a while man, welcome back.
you should also look for Meytal cohen and Glen Monturi. (And me if i ever make it to post something on youtube lol.
Me as well. Let's hope for more FI covers.
And the kids that play 46&2..! 😀
@@henryrollins9177 yes the O'Keefe Music Foundation. They are awesome.
Thank God, you gave us Johnkew.
2024 and still waiting for another song drop :')
Killer!!! Awesome!! Invincible!!🤘💪🥁
Please do more videos. A nine year break is far too long. The drum set and recording space are quite the improvement over the basement too!
The legend is BACK we missed you John! Great cover as always 👍🏻
Maybe one day Johnkew will remember his youtube password and bless us with another cover
Oh god, oh gooood! I just can't breath You rock man.
Achei vc aqui, profe!
John, I can't wait till you tackle some more songs from Fear Innoculum. This is my favorite Tool album now.
God damn. It always amazes me the power of the human brain and what the bodys reflexes are capable of. I wish id started playing the drums when I was young. Amazing performance 👏
I love how you hit the cymbals like Carey, a smash and then let your arm linger there a little. Very nice work mate
The drumming in this song doesn't even make sense, Jesus Christ. Outstanding job, really impressive! Congrats!
I was always taught that Zeus was the god of Thunder, his name is actually Danny and he is American. John your Lateralus was my favourite but this is truly masterful. Looking forward to you taking us on a Chocolate Chip Trip sometime soon.
Those covers help me appreciate Tool's music - seeing how it's being played just makes it better :)
He got that ripped from playing Danny Carey songs on drums
Im pretty sure covering Danney Crey to a T will make a 500 pound man look exactly the same... ;) Imagine doing a 2 hour concert now.... unreal
@@Brousey No joke either, you see Danny's guns in that Pneuma video? Guy is a beast.
Great drumming is not about recklessly beating everything in front of you...playing unecessary drum fills...its about patiently executing with perfection. Great Job. Just loved it.
Absolutely incredible man. It's one thing listening to the drumming in the song, but being able to see it and hearing the drums louder is insane
Probably the quickest I've ever clicked on a TH-cam video. Fantastic work, as usual.
Mastery. Effortless mastery!
Btw.....I wonder if Danny watches this and goes “aight, imma step up my game. These dudes figuring my sh*t too easily”. Knowing him, the answer is probably no. 😑
Dude, guarantee you it took John a cool minute to figure this song out! Just because he makes it looks easy doesn't mean it IS easy.
@@houstonmolinar7254 is a "cool" minute similar to a "New York" minute?
Have an amazing 2023 John!! I want to see Pneuma !!! Give us that amazing piece of art!!
Not only is danny great drummer he is great composoer.basicly all his songs on this albums are drumm solos
John its unreal insane technique of Daney Carey makes me crazy...you did soooooo insane job with it! The best Cover i have ever seen!
I would like to watch more videos 🎶🤩 please, amazing job! You rock 🤘🏼🥁
Where did you go? you had one of the best drum cover channels out here
I'm still out here!

Thank you.
