    When i was a kid my family camped at Hickory Ridge every summer w a group of many other friends. (late 70/ early 80's) and other campers Its changed SO much. Once had property owners lived on site w their little girl i played w all the time nice double wide huge weeping willow we could swing from, also a small store/camp check in, as well as swimming pool my dad and others helped build. Every year that was my summer. Many Trails i see are no longer there nor the campsites used to have maybe 40 or so. Before Hickory Ridge we went to Roberts Creek :) I grew up outside fun times still outside now. Cannot stand being indoors all day no way!

    5:57 "But it does make for some pretty scenery." *proceeds to throw rock in lake*
    Also, I think those were baby box elder trees, not poison ivy. They look very similar.

    I love doing hiking and landscape photography. What is the best location in the area for a hike and awesome photo opportunity?

    Are you allowed to just park overnight at that boat ramp? Or do you need to inform the park staff or anything first or get a pass?

      I called and and asked first. They took down my make and model and said they made note to staff that it would be there overnight.

      The state parks (White Breast, Elk Rock, Cordova, etc.) close @ 10:00pm. The public boat ramp by the marina is maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers and allows overnight parking. There is a $5/day fee at that ramp. You can buy a season pass for $40. The staff do like to know if you're going to be staying over night(s). It's rare that folks stay overnight so they get concerned when they see a vehicle left overnight. I'm the oddball, I've been dragging my boat down to Red Rock on the 3 big summer holidays and spending 3-10 days relaxing on the boat, fishing, and kayaking for the past 20 years. I've got a 30' cruiser that's the mother ship with all the creature comforts, and my sister has an 18' bow rider that we use for water sports, fishing, touring, and a taxi cab for friends and family that come down just for a day.

    Are there time of day when the wind is worse than others or is it just random weather? Paddled out of elk rock ramp a couple years ago and didn't get far with all the white caps. Probably a sign to get off when the power boats are pulling out. Too bad the camping is closed :/

      I think it's more random Iowa winds than time of day. I usually just avoid it if the winds are high or coming from the Northwest. I hear you on the camping though...hopefully we'll be able to get back to it soon! Take care!

    Great video! Thanks for the information. My wife and I are headed to Yellow River State Forest in the spring for her first ever backpacking trip and we've been looking also for a place to do some paddle camping. Do any rental places exist near Lake Red Rock or should we plan to bring our own boats. Do canoes work as well as kayaks or are the winds too problematic?

      CanoeSport Outfitters in Indianola would be a good place to start for rentals. Canoes might work, but between the wind created waves and the boat wakes you would likely get swamped :(

      There is a place in the red rock area on the Pella side that does rentals. I would not recommend a canoe trip on this lake unless you are an experienced paddler. The chop gets real rough on a windy day. Grew up on this lake it’s a boat heavy lake.

    How long does it take roughly would you say? I'm trying to enjoy the scenery as well but was curious roughly how long it takes for this route?

    • @HikePaddleBike
      @HikePaddleBike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the wind and how fast you paddle, but I would estimate 2-3 miles per hour.

    I'm planning on buying a kayak here in Iowa soon and Im sort of confused on the light laws. Do you need one during the day or just at night?

    • @HikePaddleBike
      @HikePaddleBike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just at night!

    Let me guess a kayaker that Doesn’t have to register his kayak it’s not camping for free go figure you’re gonna be on the water you got a pay

      Let me guess... another TH-cam commenter that doesn't know what they are talking about. Both of the kayaks in this video are registered as you can see by the registration stickers. This location also has no fee to camp. www.mvr.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Lake-Red-Rock/Recreation/Hickory-Ridge-Wilderness-Area/

      In Iowa you only need to register your kayak if it’s over 13ft or has a motor on it. Not sure how long his kayak is but that’s the way it’s written.
