Absolutely love watching young people fall in love w elvis. He was from my parents generation but is still kept alive because he was the goat. Old and young love him. I don't know of any other entertainer that crossed so many genre's and mastered them all.
I’m a 61-year-old woman who like @lindabeckworth8637 loves seeing young people discover Elvis & keeping his music alive. I’m also at the age where I had the opportunity to see Elvis perform live. I was nine years old. Elvis didn’t think he’d be remembered once he passed. So, it touches my heart when I see young people like yourselves discover Elvis‘s music. Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination (less than 9 miles from Graceland, Elvis‘s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck was for them.
I’m 63 years old and when I was 15 in 1976 my mother and I went to one of his concerts outside of Washington DC called the Capital center in Largo Maryland. This song is in tribute to Martin Luther Kings speech I had a dream. And his assassination that happened in Memphis in Elvis’s own town in 1968and to Robert Kennedys assassination. This song was written 2 months after MLK’s death.
This was a song elvis recorded after the assasination of the civil rights activist martin luther king... so powerful and should be used today as an anthem.
The song was a very last minute composition which also encompassed the assassination of Robert Kennedy when Elvis & producer-director Steve Binder saw the TV news that Kennedy had just been shot. Binder asked Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on Elvis' thoughts & feelings which touched on King's speech about a world of peace & harmony.
Thank you for introducing a young person to the wonderful Elvis. There will never be anyone like him. He had everything the voice, talent, looks, the passion. He is in the rock and roll, country, rockabilly, and gospel, hall of fame., He also won three grammys for his gospel music..
Another good Elvis video to watch is him singing thr Trilogy.....Looks like we're already half way there to seeing another Elvis video, I hope it'll be Trilogy. You will be blown away by it.......And thank-you for appreciating the greatest ....Elvis Presley!
He sang this after Martin Luther King was assassinated. And President Kennedy. This song means so much to him because he wanted to get the message across. I had to laugh at your first comment 'wow he can 'sing' bless you, he did over 700 songs and ocer 30 films. He,'s not a Vegas caricature. You're both very sweet thank you for your reaction
Sorry, but it was Senator Ted Kennedy that got killed in 1968, his brother (JFK) the president got killed in November 22, 1963... Martin Luther King was assassinated also in 1968, so both MLK and Ted Kennedy got assassinated that year and Elvis was devastated by that, he also sang it to honor the veterans
believe it or not, times were actually worse. Dr. Martin Luther King had been murdered, Rober Kennedy had been murdered, and the country was in a race war. This was his hope for America. His manager didn't want him to sing this song on TV. He did anyway. He was a civil rights advocate. You would also like "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" from Vegas 1970. Elvis sang with such passion. He started in gospel music. Thank you and your friend for this wonderful review. Be Blessed
Elvis did grow up in the ghetto in Tupelo Mississippi. He went to a black church and that is were he found his love of singing. Research him. Great reaction guys.
Thanks for your reaction. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.
The comeback was his first performance in decades and according to the books about him he was always nervous. It was filmed in June of 1968 and MLK was killed in April and Robert Kennedy was killed while they were rehearsing and planning the special.
If you like Elvis Dancing you should react to his " Bosa Nova baby" film clip from one of his travel log style movie called " Fun in Alcapolco"✌️❤️ P S. Elvis didn't like being called the king of rock and roll.✌️
This song was especially written for Elvis and the Comeback Special. This song was about Martin Luther King and Robert F Kennedy assassinations. Also for all the blood shed during the Vietnam War. When Elvis recorded this song, he wanted the studio dark and when they turned the lights back on, they couldn't find Elvis. They eventually found him in a corner curled in the fetal position crying. This is how much the song effected Elvis.
You all need to watch the "Comeback" documentary. A songwriter wrote this especially for Elvis. I'm sorry to tell you it was not for Martin Luther King. Granted, it could've been for him, but I'm sorry to have to tell you that it written for Elvis. But watch the Comeback Documentary it will tell you all about it. RIP ELVIS, you will always be the greatest of all time.
SOME BACKGROUND INFO: As per the producer-director of the '68 special -- Steve Binder -- Elvis, Binder & others were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is not a dedication to any one person but is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie represents the blood shed in Vietnam. See the video "Gates of Graceland: Secrets of the '68 Special" for the entire story of the '68 special, + all the other Steve Binder video interviews regarding the culmination of the song & the entire making of the special. Binder, now 92, was the most upstanding, ethical people in the business, along w-Marty Pasetta, producer of the Hawaii concert & ingenious creator of that ramp from the stage so that Elvis could get to the audience. ELVIS & HIS NERVES: Steve Binder related a little story regarding the '68 special which took place in the dressing room right before Elvis was due to go on: Elvis was extremely nervous and he told Binder that he didn't know any of the songs, he forgot all the words, & wasn't going out there, & Binder said i don't care if you walk out, just say hello & then walk off, but you ARE going out. And out he came. Thank you.

After calling the FBI director the "greatest living American," Presley targeted the Beatles yet again. According to notes, Elvis said that "the Beatles laid the groundwork for many of the problems we are having with young people by their filthy unkempt appearances and suggestive music."
