That extra case Lapua gives you is handy for burning up doing an AZTEC analysis in the AMP annealer and not triggering your OCD by only having 99 pieces of usable brass in the ammo case.
Hi John, I'm not a big fan of sorting brasses by weight, but maybe a draw by weight and then sorting those groups by volume would be interesting. Normally draw by volume with the Bison Armory case volume gauge team, it is very easy and fast. I'm expecting 300 Lapua brass for my 284 and maybe I'll give it a try. greetings from Spain PS, who cuts his beard? you or Erik??
Wow!! You got way more stuff than Cortina!! Love your channel and have learned so much from you. I'm looking for a source for those double latch green ammo boxes. I like the red ones too!! Remember where you get those from? TIA John
John, since this video wasn’t about weight sorting, how about a video on weight sorting? I’ve never been able to bring myself to it. My theory is the “boiler room” of the brass is the part that matters more. But with a given piece of brass, the weight difference could be in any given part of the brass from the case head to the mouth and therefore weight would not necessarily affect volume nor would it be linear. Perhaps I’m wrong in my thinking. I would really love to hear your thoughts on the subject!
Honestly I'm not a big believer in weight sorting when using Lapua brass. I'm sure it can have some benefits for other brass when consistency isn't as good plus there's just some people who want to do it no matter what to rule out any and all variables.
@@FClassJohn is there brass other than Lapua? 😂. That’s pretty much how I have thought about it, too. I didn’t know if I’m missing anything. I’ve got four boxes waiting on the bench right now and thought “what the heck” if you had a good reason to. Thanks again, John. Looks like my SuperTrickler will be here in February. I think I’m going to have a .308 barrel spin for my PRS rifle and do some F-T/R next year. The closest range used to let me take my PRS rifle and shoot F-Open off the bipod years ago (2012-2014) and I actually won a couple matches back the. Would really like to get back into it.
I think it has a lot to do with what brand of brass you buy. Like I said at the end of the video, I'm not a big weight sorting person but I was sorting brass for a friend which is why I wanted to find a way to use the ST.
John, love your content as always, but.....why would you weight sort your brass? Lapua is extremely consistent. Is there some demonstrated gain? With a 1% spread, what does this equate to case volume? Worth the time?
Yeah like I said, it was brass I was sorting for a friend. I've done it in the past, I can't really say it's a benefit for sure with quality brass like you said. However, like a lot of things, if I can find a fast and easy way to do it, and in this case it's a one time thing per set of brass then maybe it's at least worth the peace of mind. Time will tell.
I've always wondered if weight sorting with no primer versus volume sorting full length resize but with spent primer brass if there was a difference, or if they made a little silicone or rubber plug for the primer pocket so that you could do that process. It would seem case volume consistancy would be better. Humm, maybe I need to invent a machine that would inject liquid to measure volume accurately like the auto trickler does for throwing powder. You would have to have a water proof base assembly, a way to inject and a way to remove the liquid.
Hi John, Enjoy your videos but I have a question not pertaining so much to this video, but more to the scale. Do you have any problems running it around fluorescent lights or have you heard of anyone else having any problems? TIA.
Yes and no. I've been using Fx120i scales for years and they are a Mag Force Restoration scale so they don't have the same issues that a strain gauge like an RCBS, Hornady and other powder dispensers have with cell phones and fluorescent lighting. It can supposedly still be a little bit of a issue but I replaced my shop lights with Costco LED lights so it's a non-issue anyway.
After you have your groupings of 100 why not sort each of those sections again by the brass number so you can deal with box1, then box2, etc. Would make it even faster.
Yeah good idea and I actual thought about that as I pulled the first box. It keeps the hunting and pecking across all the boxes and should eliminate some chances to make a mistake.
If you watch all the way till the end, you’ll hear me say that I really don’t sort brass and that I was doing this for a friend. With Lapua brass, I really don’t see a need to sort but some do. As far as whether to sort brass, if you do, there are a number of theories on it and you just have to figure out what works for you if it’s something you want to do.
My buddy that I was sorting these for has done weight on a Sartorius and volume using the top tool on the market ad-naseum (close to 2000 rounds of each) and found the correlation between volume and weight is pretty close (at least with Lapua Brass). Close enough for him that for how much faster weight sorting is he just goes with that. To be fair I don't sort brass at all, for me it's just not worth the time but I recognize that with some brands of brass and for some people it might be worth it either on target or in their mind and in either case it's with it for them. Everybody has their things they do that others don't, we're all guilty of it.
I don't personally do it (like I said I was dong this for a friend). Some people feel sorting brass can help from a capacity or consistency standpoint but with high quality brass like Lapua it's really not needed. It could however be more beneficial with lower quality brass when the consistency is much less.
That extra case Lapua gives you is handy for burning up doing an AZTEC analysis in the AMP annealer and not triggering your OCD by only having 99 pieces of usable brass in the ammo case.
Yep absolutely. My friend who I was sorting this for actually puts 101 pieces in each box, then burns the piece in the middle weight wise.
John, wow I have one on order and after watching these videos my head is spinning! Thank for the info!
The SuperTrickler seems to be a really nice tool. A lot of potential options. Definitely gives the V4 a run for its money. Thanks for sharing.
Agreed and thank you.

Here you go for the green, the red is almost impossible to find for some reason. Magnum amzn.to/3hxIBk4 and Std amzn.to/3iZrfgg

John, how do you find the time and keep a day job? Take my hat off to you for your dedication.
I have never found weight sorting brass to be helpful, but I do think that sorting by volume is useful.
I think it has a lot to do with what brand of brass you buy. Like I said at the end of the video, I'm not a big weight sorting person but I was sorting brass for a friend which is why I wanted to find a way to use the ST.
Jon! You should be doing Excel videos too! Mad skills with the spread sheets👍
Thank you. Left over skills from a previous life. I used to do some crazy stuff with Excel back in the day.
nice process...
Great Video
Glad you enjoyed it

21st Century do primer plugs.

@@FClassJohn Thanks for the reply John. Thinking about doing the Super trickler so wanted to see what you had to say.

Why would you sort new brass before sizing and trimming to length??? Seems like voodoo.

To bad that sorting by case weight does not correlate to case volume, so not sure what the purpose is?

I am new to reloading, why are you going through this exercise ?
