      I was just typing out a comment about this. Regarding the loyalty of the wand to the first owner, wouldn't it make sense that it was loyal to Death then? Wasn't that the point of the tale of the 3 brothers? The wand was HANDED by Death, not beaten the first time. Death never lost a duel with the wand. The wand chooses a Potter could be a nod to the 3rd brother for being the most clever in mastering death, same as with Harry.

    Ollivander seems to understand wands the most intimately, and he always emphasized "the wand chooses the wizard Mr Potter." I also think the wand is imbued with great power too. That is why Dumbledore, so easily, beat Voldemort at the Ministry.
    Lets suppose that Death performed amazing magic to create the wand and the wand automatically chose Death to be the primary owner. (This is assuming deathly hallows were not created by human wizards but Death himself) Death simply gave the wand without the brother winning it, so it still remembered its primary owner. However, I think Death allowed the brother to become the secondary owner of the wand. Death was cunning and planned to kill the brother by fueling his arrogance which is what ended up happening. Maybe Death's success further made Death the primary owner of the wand.
    Further proof of Death continuing to be the primary owner is that death seems to unnaturally surround this elder wand.
    In deathly hallows they talk about how its "bloody history" has been documented. (On a sidenote, if the oldest brother had been smarter plus I believe that the wand has been blessed with great power, which together could have allowed Death to lose, and the wand would not have led to a bloody history.)
    Initially Death imbued the wand with the rule that it must be "won" by for example expelliarmus or a physical tussle. Noting the arrogance of the first brother, this is actually genius, because if someone steals the wand in that manner, the oldest brother's ego would be hurt and he would try to kill the thief.
    Then came Grindelwald who won the wand by expelliarmus from the window I believe. Grindelwald kills alot of people which means Death is still winning and is the primary owner, I think JK makes a mistake at the next step though. The slightly more talented dumbledore should have lost to Grindelwald + the magic in the wand in a fair fight.
    Then comes Harry. Harry beat Death as a baby first with the help of dumbledore and lily. He then beats Death in sorcerers stone, chamber and goblet of fire. Harry wrestles draco(who won elder wand from dumbledore) making him the secondary owner as well. Harry beats Death, Lily's blood, against elder wand again in the forest. (I would have preferred he had used the stone but whatever...) Before the final avada at school, Harry has beaten Death like 5 times, so for the first time Death is no longer the primary owner. Harry has also won the elder wand from Draco, as well as survived an elder wand attack making him a super strong secondary owner as well. Now.. Harry who is all about saving life has beaten Death too severely and won the wand too favorably. So the wand in voldemorts hand wont allow harm on anyone at Hogwarts.

    • @Flurbskating
      @Flurbskating ปีที่แล้ว +52

      If you read the books, Dumbledore tells Harry that he believes the Peverell brothers were simply very gifted wizards who created these items-- and that they are merely proof of the wizards talent. The story, like any myth, is an exaggeration of what really happened.
      "Oh yes, I think so. Whether they met Death on a lonely road... I think it more likely that the Peverell brothers were simply gifted, dangerous wizards who succeeded in creating those powerful objects. The story of them being Death's own Hallows seems to me the sort of legend that might have sprung up around such creations."
      The books also explain why Voldemort can't hurt anyone in Hogwarts. It says clearly that when Harry sacrificed himself to save everyone at the school, he instituted the same magical protection that Lily gave him as a child when she sacrificed herself to save him. Everyone harry sacrificed himself for could not be harmed by Voldemort at that point.
      "Don't you get it? I was ready to die to stop you from hurting these people"
      "But you did not!"
      "I meant to, and that's what did it. I've done what my mother did. They're protected from you. Haven't you noticed how none of the spells you put on them are binding? You can't torcher them. You can't touch them. You don't learn from your mistakes, Riddle, do you?"
      Don't overthink it with this crazy fan-theory stuff. The books do a good job of explaining it clearly. Most of these fan-theory people never even read the books... lol.

    Kind of adding to the the ‘Thestrals are the anti-unicorn’ idea; in the first book Firenze says that a unicorn is a symbol of purity and innocence (innocence in this situation means child-like innocence or in other words ignorance of the darker aspects of life)

    This is also what I thought reading HP. I was like “oh, I get it” when the history of the wand was being talked about. I think it makes perfect sense that powerful *Dark* wizards specifically wouldn’t realize they were being tricked. I mean, if it was looking for the most powerful wizard why didn’t it find it’s way to Nicholas Flamel? Answer, good old Nick never would have sought it out. In the wand’s quest to get back to the Master of Death, it inadvertently created a system which would fail to attract the Master of Death. Yep, I’m saying even the Elder Wand itself didn’t understand what the characteristics of the Master of Death would be. After all, it was created by Death who did not know what characteristics his master would have until he actually met his master in the Parzival brothers. But presumably he created the wand before he met them. Thus the wand may the same assumption as Voldemort: that the chief characteristic of the Master of Death would be invincibility. That the Master of Death would be able to literally duel Death and win. But actually of course, the Master of Death is he who is not afraid of death.

  • @floridanative8
    @floridanative8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    I agree with your theory. But I think Harry is the true ultimate owner of the Elder wand after he dies; after he is struck down by Voldemort. Reason: Death created the wand (original owner). Suffice to say, the original owner (aka death) would always win over the current wand holder, as this was Death's original intention. Death would be the most powerful wizard in a sense. In the meantime, the wand would continue its psuedo-allegiance to the more powerful wizard of a duel. This would include Harry's first duel with Draco involving the Elder wand. Until Harry defeats Death after he is struck down by Voldemort, then resurrects. He then becomes more powerful, ultimate owner. More powerful than it's original owner and creator, Death. Thoughts?

    Consider this. What if the elder wand lies outside wand lore? What if the elder wand shows loyalty to those who possess Peverall blood? The wand may have betrayed Grindelwald because Dumbledore may be more closely related to the Peverell family than Grindelwald. If the elder wand is a family heirloom and shows more loyalty to someone who possesses more family blood, then maybe it never bonded to Voldemort because he had so very little of his soul left. In addition Harry possessed two other deathly hallows which are also inheritances from the Peverell family. But if you weren't using a wand that is perfect for you then you got the elder wand and suddenly you're an even better wizard (or witch) you would of course buy into the idea that the wand makes you a more powerful witch (or wizard) because the wand allows for a magic user's full potential to be used.(the reason this doesn't apply to Voldy is because he be totally vibing with his wand and does to Harry because he wasn't vibing with the wand he had but as soon as he gets his first wand back he ditches the death stick, not getting any real experience for comparison therefore he doesn't realize he's just a powerful with either wand)

And due to this Harry wins, Voldemort vs Harry is a King vs another King, however, Harry here is the master of Death, he is the only person who had the resurrection stone, and the cloak of invisibility, and the wand senses this in him, and in its pursuit to find the greatest wizard it knows (Death), she goes to Harry as she senses he is the Master of Death.

      Good point. Could imply that Voldy already knows all the bad stuff his predecessors did, not being much interested in the type of magic Dumbledore did. But I guess it's not really well explained how this learning takes place.

    • @carminenickens148
      @carminenickens148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      According to this theory, It's not a matter of learning the magic, it's about how powerful the wizard is. Like Ben said what the wand learns is how powerful the wizard is, the wizard learns nothing from it. It's a state of mind people believe the wand makes them more powerful. I believe it's one of death's tricks.

    • @gender-gremlin
      @gender-gremlin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The wizard using the wand could "level up" or grow more powerful if the elder wand deems them worthy of some of the knowledge it has. Wizards in Harry Potter become more powerful when they learn how to use and control their power. (at least that seems to be what happens) So if the wand's current owner is powerful enough to gain some of the wisdom stored inside it (whether by teaching the wand something new, merit, etc..) then the wand will allow access to some of it's knowledge.

  • @MrAnonymousization
    @MrAnonymousization ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I think I’m going to make a YT video on my own theory that I’m not sure if others have thought of it before.
    That the Elder Wand doesn’t necessarily pick “Who is the stronger Witch/Wizard.”
    But is instead loyal to the one who does not fear death, or who has accepted his mortality.
    Remember, Death first gave the Deathly Hallows to the brothers hoping to eventually trap or trick them toward their own demise.
    So gifting the Elder Wand to someone who is afraid to die is a perfect way to trap them into a false sense of security which will lead to their inevitable demise.
    However, if the person who has the Elder Wand has come to accept their own mortality, and has “embraced death” not as a foe, but a friend and natural part of life, then the Elder Wand will serve that person greatly by becoming the wielded friend.
    This is why Dumbledore was able to possess the wand for so many years, he had accepted death long ago, and was not afraid to give his life in order to save his students and destroy Voldemort.
    Harry had accepted his death earlier in the story just before letting Voldemort kill him. Afterwords Dumbledore says “You are the true master of death, because the true master does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that he must die, and understands that there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying."
    Harry earlier states that “Harry understood at last that he was not supposed to survive. His job was to walk calmly into Death's welcoming arms.”
    When you consider all of this, it makes perfect sense why Voldemort ended up losing to Harry Potter in the end, despite being the “More Powerful Wizard”. What was the one thing Voldemort was always running from? The reason why he made the Horcrux, why he murdered so many others?
    It’s because he didn’t want to die. He wanted to “Live forever.” He was so terrified of death, that he killed scores of people in order to avoid facing it.
    So when it came time to clash wands against Harry, who had already accepted death, the Elder Wand not only chose Harry as it’s true wielder, but also out right despised Voldemort. Witnessing Harry Potters sacrifice first hand in the forbidden forest, the Elder Wand knew that he, Harry Potter should be its new master… not this scummy coward who had not come to accept his own mortality.
    That’s my theory anyways. I’m not sure how well it hold up to other quotes from Rowling, but I like to think that the there is a lot more going on with what the Elder Wand is thinking that what meets the eye. That it is in fact VERY loyal, but only to those who are the Masters of Death.
    Not “the most powerful” per say, but the one who no longer fears death, and appreciates it as just another part of life.

    I've always seen it like this: The Elder Wand will win in a one-on-one duel, in a direct test of power. But the irony here is that this does not mean you're invincible. The wand just makes you feel like it and that makes you careless and slip up, so Death gets what he wants in the end. The wand creates death and invites it, too. How did the first owner die? He had his throat slit in his sleep. It wasn't a fair fight, but who said it had to be? He got overpowered nonetheless and the wand acknowledges that. Gregorovitch: got robbed when he wasn't paying attention. Dumbledore: disarmed. Draco: had the wand literally pried from him. They showed weakness which the wand wouldn't accept, so it switched alliance.

    HEY GUYS I HAVE A THEORY PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS
    "The wand chooses the wizard" is something we are all familiar with. I would be content to believe that this is simply because some wands are better suited for certain wizards, and leave it at that, but for a rather startling realisation I had recently.
    In HBP, Harry finds various incantations in Snape's old copy of *Advanced Potion-Making,* and he uses *at least two* of these spells, *successfully,* without knowing what they were supposed to do.
    This completely blows the idea that magic is *all about intent* completely out of the water (although some spells, namely the Cruciatus Curse and the Patronus Charm, do require certain mindsets for them to be effective). In that case, how on earth would either *Levicorpus* or *Sectumsempra* have worked, given that all he had were the incantations? He had absolutely no clue what *Sectumsempra* would do, or he would never have used it.
    So, why did it work?
    The only thing, apart from Harry, that played a part in casting that curse was *his wand.* Could the wand itself recognise what a curse is supposed to do from the incantation? Is that why one must always pronounce the incantations correctly, and why non-verbal spells are so difficult? If the way to get a spell to work is to communicate the incantation to your wand, and with non-verbal spells you have to do so *silently,* I can see how it would be difficult.
    So, what does this *mean?*
    Does the wand literally choose the wizard? Is it capable of recognising similarities and differences in its own magic and the wizard trying it out, and of rejecting or accepting that wizard accordingly?
    Does this mean that the Elder Wand is simply the *most sentient* wand, and that's why it's known as the most powerful? That it's just easiest to communicate with, and therefore the easiest wand to use? If that is true, is it possible that it's been picking up unique skills from each wizard that has wielded it, the way Harry's wand picked up some of Voldemort's magic in the graveyard due to the wands being connected? That it is in fact the most powerful wand simply because it has had powerful owners, that only came to own it because of its reputation as the most powerful wand in the first place? It's quite the beautiful circle. This heightened awareness could also be the reason it always changes its allegiance to the one who defeated its former master: That all wands *would* change their allegiance in the same way, but they don't recognise when their master is beaten. If that is true, is Draco Malfoy's hawthorn wand special, or is the Elder Wand just so aware of what is happening that it recognised that someone had beaten its master, and promptly switched allegiance on its own, prompting the hawthorn wand to do the same?
    On a relatively unrelated note: Could wands theoretically be Confunded by a powerful enough wizard (or a sentient enough wand)? What would happen if a wand *was* Confunded? Could it be made to believe that *Diffindo* has the same effect as *Wingardium Leviosa?* If so, could such a charm be used to confuse the Unforgivable Curses with other incantations? Or could one confuse a wand into thinking that, for example, "FORWARD!" is an incantation? (I now think that Hagrid's "umbrella" has definetely been mended, and more than likely tampered with, by Dumbledore.) Could one convince a wand that its allegiance lies with someone who has never beaten its rightful owner in their life? That its master is a different wizard than it should rightfully be?
    If so, would one need the Elder Wand in order to achieve such a Confundus Charm, or would one simply have to be a powerful wizard? Barty Crouch Junior did manage to Confund the Goblet of Fire, after all.
    Discuss.

      This is the theory of magic, aka magicology. Some say magic incantations are prayers to supernatural beings, like demons, angels, genii, or gods -- which is why magic is forbidden in judæo-christian tradition. But what if a wand learns the meanings given by its master's intent? Or more generally, the community of wands and wizards learn the meanings given by the present and former wands and wizards? This is why incantations are in ancient languages, even when they're new ones like levicorpus and sectumsempra.

    I have only one problem with this theory: Dumbledore sees himself as the master of the Elder wand and actively tried to break its power by dying undefeated. That means he believed (or knew from experience) that the wand truly has unusual powers and that he won its allegiance from Grindelwald. Dumbledore surely wouldn't have given the wand's power any further thought if he had beaten Grindelwald in a fair 1-on-1 by being just a tiny bit more powerful or if he didn't witness any of that power throughout the half century that he owned it.

    • @christopherbrown1848
      @christopherbrown1848 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, he mentions that Voldemort is the only one who was powerful enough to recognize that he wasn't actually getting a boost from the Elder Wand, but he also said Dumbledore was equally powerful, so he really should have realized it as well if that were the case. I suspect Dumbledore had to defeat Grindelwald via some manner of magical distraction at the end of their wizarding duel, and has every reason to believe in its power seeing Grindelwald's magic up close without and with its additional power.

    • @lateralhistory

      But even this holds up, I think, as Dumbledore would have been at that time the closest thing to the master of death. He was in possession of the Resurrection Stone and the Elder Wand, and he had also at one stage been in possession of the Cloak. He never held all three at the same moment, but he got closer than anyone. And you could argue that as Harry - the possessor of the Cloak - was "Dumbledore's man", he sort of "had" the Cloak too.
      What undid him was that he was weakened and dying in the moment Draco found him. If he had still been physically strong, I don't think the wand would have left him, except for Harry.

    • @nesnibila4888

      I think Dumbledore's weakness lay in the placebo effect. He seems to be torn up by guilt and regret a lot of the time by his mistakes, and, whilst other people saw him as brilliant and very powerful, I think he probably had a low self image and some form of imposter syndrome due to his regret. I wonder if he attributed powerful feats to the wand rather than himself due to this mental distortion.
      He also mentioned that the Hallows was one of his weaknesses, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ignored anything that didn't conform to the 'most powerful wand' thing because, if he didn't, he would have had to accept that his greatest mistakes were due to him chasing a lie, taking away the last justification from his actions; that the dreams he abandoned his family for were worth attaining.

    It seems though that the true owner of the wand NEVER ACTUALLY looses a duel. The wand was always taken via non magical means or with the consent of the master.
    The dumbledore situation seems to be the ONLY time that the elder wand was magically separated from its master and that was with dumbledore's consent. Every other time it has been muggle thieving or some similar variant. The master never gets the opportunity to duel because the person seeking the wand knows, or thinks, they would loose such a duel.
    Unless dumbledore literally uses a disarming spell against grindelwald, no hijinks involved the streak wont be broken, and we already suspect it will be a magical beast that actually does old grindy in.
    Why go into a fair duel you know you wont win?

      THANK YOU. I came to the comment section to say it, but you beat me to it.
      The elder wand can't be defeated IN A MAGICAL DUEL. But the owner doesn't automatically become invincible otherwise, they need to be powerful and fast enough to respond to every little threat with the wand if they want its unbeatability to kick in... that's what I reckon happened in the astronomy tower.
      Dumbledore's reaction time was hindered from the events of the year and of that night itself, and he wasn't fast enough to react to Malfoy.
      It's different from the Voldemort x Harry case in the forest, as Harry purposefully didn't fight back, thus, he never lost a duel to him.

It seems like the language surrounding the wand is pretty precise in that it is only unbeatable in a duel. It doesn't even promise stronger spell casting or an easier time channeling magic.

    • @FenixTheDon
      @FenixTheDon ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but the problem with that, which I've always questioned, is how TF would the elder wand know when it wasn't being used there. Draco didn't even have it in his possession let alone have it anywhere near him. Voldemort already had it and it knew Voldemort was more powerful. At that point why would the elder wand even care about the Draco anymore??? If wands select the wizard and the elder wand ALWAYS picks the strongest then that means that Draco would be the wands afterthought cuz he is way weaker than Voldemort.
      Not to mention Harry disarming Draco while he used someone else's wand (i believe it was his mother's) would mean that the wand Draco used would have been the one that belonged to Harry.

      Or it could have been that the Elder Wand was different to other wands in that it amplified the magic that was already there, far more efficiently than any other wand, it’s legendary as a powerful wand for a reason.
      We always see Dumbledore doing pedestrian, simple tasks that wouldn’t have outlined him as much more monstrously powerful than any other wizard, probably to ensure the wand remains covert.
      He could’ve performed miracles but he preferred the stealthy option, otherwise he would’ve had other Hallow hunters on his back the moment he outed himself.

The DA only proved that he'd make a good teacher and that he's sassy enough to ignore erroneous school rules to help prepare his friends for a coming disaster. He was designed to be an average student with a good heart, someone most kids could identify with, so my question is this: are we banking on the idea that Harry has a large store of latent magical ability that he refuses to tap into due to laziness, lack of interest, improper teaching, and/or lack of awareness in order for this theory (and the books as a whole) to work?
