Sebastian Vettel moves No 1 board away from Hamilton's car after losing Canadian GP

  • Sebastian Vettel said he is falling out of love with Formula One after a controversial penalty denied him victory in Canada and promoted Lewis Hamilton to first place.
    Subscribe to Guardian Sport ► bit.ly/GDNSport
    With 22 laps to go, Vettel went across the grass and almost hit Hamilton as he returned to the track on the inside and his rival attempted to go around him. Vettel emerged in front and stewards then gave him a five-second penalty for an unsafe return and forcing another car off the track.
    Vettel held his lead to the end but was only 1.3 seconds in front of Hamilton who thus took the win for Mercedes - the British star's fifth win from seven rounds. After the race, Vettel theatrically grabbed the big No 1 board parked in front of Hamilton's car and moved it to where his Ferrari should have been in the empty No 2 slot. Ferrari are appealing against the time penalty.

    Watch this video in slow motion (this option is in the Settings menu). In slow motion, you can clearly see Vettel's car has begun fishtailing to the right as he leaves the grassy chicane. And for anyone who knows how to manage fishtailing / skidding / over-steering, what is the proper corrective action? If one is fishtailing to the right, do you steer to the left or to the right to correct it? The correct answer is: you steer to the right, which is exactly what Vettel does as he rejoins the track. He knows he has a limited amount of asphalt and milliseconds in which to correct this fishtail, which he successfully does before hitting the kerb or wall. Whether or not he had secondary intent and benefit of blocking Hamilton is peripheral and immaterial to the fact that his vehicle was not yet fully in control (starting to fishtail) while rejoining the track. The laws of physics still apply whether you're a Vettel fan or a Hamilton fan. Momentum is not an imaginary thing --- heavy car + very high speed + loss of traction + inertia = momentum. Besides, if Hamilton had done a much better job of analyzing Vettel's momentum and really wanted to take advantage of his error, he would have attempted passing Vettel ON THE LEFT, not the right. The left side of the track was completely empty and available for passing while Vettel was regaining control and managing his momentum over on the right side. Why intentionally drive into Vettel's "momentum zone" when he's leaving a big patch of asphalt wide open to his left? Conclusion: Vettel was simply managing his momentum and correcting his fishtail. Hamilton screwed up by (1) not properly interpreting Vettel's momentum and (2) picking the wrong side to attempt capitalizing on Vettel's mistake. FIA Race Control needs to learn how to interpret fishtailing, fishtailing recovery, and study up on their understanding of basic physics, inertia, traction, and momentum. That penalty was absolutely ridiculous. Hamilton needs to take responsibility for the fact that he had a window of opportunity to pass on the left, and he totally screwed it up. Vettel screwed up flying off the track, but then Hamilton also screwed up by going to the wrong side afterwards. They raced and it worked itself out: Vettel won fair and square.

      Nope. Hamilton stayed on the racing line as the rules state that if you go off the track YOU CANNOT COME BACK STRAIGHT ON TO THE TRACK ON THE RACING LINE.
      That's exactly what Vettel did and it's clear that he did NOT lift off the throttle but floored it, which was why he was out of control coming back onto the track.
      The stewards would have ALL the data to know that.
      Hamilton was very smart to stay on the racing line and would have overtaken Vettel if he didn't impede him.
      Vettel did not win fair and square.

    • @Strawbull
      @Strawbull 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But if Hamilton was as smart as he thinks he is, he would've broken off of his racing line to take the lead by passing on the left. Regardless of what Vettel was or wasn't doing with his accelerator in an attempt to regain control of his car, it's highly predictable that Vettel was going to cross over to the right judging from his momentum. A smart driver would have seen all of this unfolding, predicted Vettel's momentum trajectory, and cut over to the left to take the lead. That's my point. Hamilton missed his chance to win undisputed via skill. Instead he had to depend upon whining to his race engineer, circumstantial evidence, and subjective rule interpretation to steal the win. And never mind the fact that Hamilton himself has done this exact type of cutting a car off after chicane crossing countless times over the years and those were never ruled as unsafe re-entry. Exactly the same. What's with the inconsistency? Why would Hamilton get his own personal set of rules and exceptions? Brakes, transmission, steering wheel, AND ACCELERATOR are all tools drivers will use when trying to re-establish control of their vehicle. Might sound counter-intuitive, but it remains a fact. Hamilton gave up his opportunity to pass on the left (and win) by staying committed to a racing line that was converging on Vettel's momentum trajectory. Rookie mistake. Vettel won fair and square.

      After carefully listening to both of these multiple- WDC's statements on the decisive incident that changed the outcome of the race, it was very interesting to hear that Hamilton admitted that his only strategy was to force Vettel into making an error, in which he did, he played him like a game of chess.
      However, interestingly enough, Vettel, in the whole of that interview, never once said "I made a mistake" he is purposely trying to manipulate the press, and the fans into seeing it the way he and Ferrari sees it, "we crossed the line first", so the penalty for making an error induced by Hamilton forcing him into making it, is irrelevant. So in other words, he's deliberately lying, and anyone who sides with him is a HYPOCRITE.!!
      Vettel is being outright disrespectful to Hamilton's hard work and his eventual win, his childish and petulant behaviour could easily be placed in the annals of F1 history, equal to Verstappens incident with Ocon in Brasil last year.
      Again, the incident in a nutshell, Hamilton forced Vettel into an error, he left the track and entered in an unsafe manner to avoid being passed, received a 5 sec penalty for his mistake, he doesn't accept that he made a mistake, deeming the race stewards as cheats, in an attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of TV viewers, so in retrospect he's risking being disciplined for bringing the sport into disrepute.

    FIA did it again i dont really know the rules are, but everytime other driver did the same thing what hamilton do they got penalized. Hamilton on Riccardo 2016 he didn't got a penalty, then Max Vs Kimi Japanese GP last years Max got penalized same thing for Seb here, 2016 Mexico GP Lewis cut the chicane at turn 1 he get away from FIA punishment but then Max did the same thing but got penalized the reason both driver cut the chicane is the same both had a lock up, then 2019 Monaco GP Hamilton Vs max, Lewis closed the door then both driver colliding each other makes Lewis cut the chicane but he not getting any single penalty from FIA but before Max Vs Hamilton incident happened there is same incident between KMag on Perez but KMag also got penalized but not for Lewis,

      I got one for you this is when they re-fueled the cars Reno when they came in to refuel the driver left the pits with hose still hooked up to the car he got a stop and go penalty then after the race they gave the driver a 10 sec penalty and that but him out of the points Reno got fined $50,000. Very next race Ferrari does the same thing and the driver runs over a pit crew member when leaving the pits they only got a drive threw penalty he won the race no added time at the end the race which would have but him to 4th if he got a 10 sec. penalty Ferrari got a $30,000 fine Schumacher was in the Ferrari so some drivers get away with a racing incident and some get penalized so it all depends who in the car at the time.
