Gone Away is still one of my favourite songs of all time, even though I haven't really listened to the band in over a decade. Then there's Pay the Man, which is just... it's hard to believe it's even the same band.
If you guys listen to more Offspring, you’ll get it and this song would be more interesting to you. If you don’t like parts of this song and his voice, you’ll alienate yourself from liking and appreciating a whole genre that is amazing! “Come Out And Play” is the one because that’s the mainstream hit.
1. In my personal opinion, I feel like his voice adds a bit more credit to the song being a tale of youth. I think if someone with a more refined voice sang this, it would feel more like an elder lecturing young people instead of someone currently dealing with that reality. 2. I’ve pointed it out in comments on other reactions, but I love how the second verse almost changes the meaning of the chorus without changing a word of it. The first time, it comes off as someone dealing with the disappointment of life’s progression, but on the second chorus, it begins to feel more like a cry for help, as if these effects are hitting way harder than anyone expected and they weren’t prepared to deal with it.
He definitely sounds desperate and in some verses maybe even angry. I always thought his performance was pretty much perfect on this song. And I like that he isn't the best singer and that you can hear imperfections throughout basically all Offspring songs - but it's not about singing pretty, it's about the message and they don't give a sh!t whether you dislike something about a song. Always came across as very punk in my eyes. To me Offspring is on a level with Bad Religion. Intelligent Punk.
Weird hearing people describe this song as having an upbeat quality. I always thought it sounded very wistful and melancholic and fits the lyrics perfectly.
I scrolled a bit and didn’t see this so I wanted to throw it out there that “The Kids Are Alright” was song in 1965 by Th Who. The phrase was super popular and became a film, was used in sports jargon, and all sorts of media. Even the title of this song, “The Kids Aren’t Alright” is pop-punk at its best. It’s flipping the table over and making everyone look at the underside instead of the pretty veneer. It’s catchy and musical but also real and hits hard. I do think you should continue to dig in as there’s a lot of layers and commentaries on society.
And in the opening theme song to "That 70's Show" the cast -- a bunch of teenagers -- sings "We're all alright!" as if to reinforce, or agree, with that sentiment. It was a "reminiscent" show, a remembrance of better, simpler times where "the kids" were generally good and mostly had harmless fun, even if the elders around them thought things were going to hell in a handbasket with the next generation... kind of how every older generation thinks of the younger generation. But they're like, "hey man, back off, the kids are alright." And The Offspring telling it real like, "No, the kids aren't alright."
The Offspring were phenomenal in the 90s. They were one of my favourite bands in high school along with Silverchair and Metallica. Check out the album “Smash”. One of the most iconic albums of the 90s.
I understand why some people don't like Dexter's vocals, but he does have a unique voice. Between that, and Noodles' guitar playing, these guys are instantly recognizable when one of their songs comes on. I was 14 when their 3rd album, "Smash," dropped in '94. I think they were the first punk band I'd ever heard, and that record is great. The first 2 before it are much more raw. Dexter's become a much better singer over the years. You might really enjoy some of their new material. Their latest album, "Let The Bad Times Roll," came out a couple months ago. It's a good listen.
I've just now realised why Dexter and other punk singers voices don't appeal to me. I don't enjoy singing without vibrato. I like Offspring okay and I listen to a bunch of metal screamers, but punk vocals have never hit my ear right and I didn't know why until now.
Self Esteem is my favorite song by them. Yall should check that song out. I think yall would like that one melodicly and the lyricism. Its gets pretty deep.

So many Offspring fans disliked Americana because they thought the band had gone 'mainstream' when in truth most of us were kids and not able to realize the depth of what they were doing.
The speed of the music in this song always reminded me of the frustration and anxiety that comes with growing up; and the way life speeds up as you transition from child to adult
Can't overstate the popularity of this song in its day. That's the biggest appeal to me. From the opening riff, I'm transported back to the highschool parking lot after school. This is hands-down one of my favourite Offspring songs. So much emotion in the song and the lyrics. Guys, punk isn't necessarily about singing nice or sounding nice. It's about rebellion, emotion and expression. Offspring are pioneers for modern punk, especially their earlier stuff. One of my favourite songs of them is Bad Habit from their Smash album. One of the huge albums in my adolescence!
The punk vocal aesthetic is very polarizing to people. Its one of those things you generally had to grow up liking because one of the qualities embraced by the punk scene and many adjacent genres is vocals that are intentionally raw, unproduced, and not "good" in the sense of a regular singing voice. Think of it as the idea that anyone can just get up without any training and sing....and that is what appealed to so many people and created a community around punk. Its why punk has a smaller following than most other types of music, but one that was intensely loyal and committed. The Offspring aren't fully punk but are heavily influenced by it, and the singer certainly has a bit more polish and alternative / pop timbre to his voice which is one of the reasons the band made it so big.
Dexters voice (much like Billie Joe in Green Day, Mark/Tom in Blink) takes getting used to.. works perfect for the band and the genre! The Offspring are such a great live band too. But yeah.. I echo a lot of these comments about Self Esteem but also Bad Habit and Want You Bad are great tracks too 🖤
Offspring "Come Out and Play" was their original super hit and it still slaps. You've definitely heard it before and the lyrics again are extremely prescient as they're talking about youth gun violence!
Their album SMASH was a monster album. It's so damn heavy. Nitro (youth energy), bad habit, Gotta get away, Genocide. It's one of the few albums I can listen to start to finish
When you think of the burbs, it's all gloss and happy like the tempo, but underneath it all is entropy and despair, like the lyrics. IDK. That's the way I hear it.
Way back in 2001, my late husband and I were sitting in a waiting area at MD Anderson. We struck up a conversation with this really sweet woman sitting next to us. It was the usual where are you from, what do you do, what is your diagnosis. Then she starts to tell us about her son and how proud she is of him and his little band. The way she spoke about him, we got the impression it was a little garage band. Then she suggested that we should see them if we ever got a chance, and mentioned they were called The Offspring. Hubs and I both sat there in shock. Yes, this little band she was so proud of was The Offspring. Really, really sweet lady and a fun story. Still haven't had the chance to see them live though.
As you go through their catalogue, you can really witness their evolution, a kind of rise to the top and fall to complacency. You're catching them somewhere in between with this song. It's a good one to get in with them because from here you can go back and forward, and still get quality. Punk is short sweet and repetitive. Take Bad Religion for example. Feels like you're listening to the same song over and over but to me and millions of people they're awesome, the OGs.
Bad Religion is a band I've only recently started to get into. They're great. "We're Only Gonna Die", "Infected" and "American Jesus" are top notch songs.
The ending guitar lick sounds like a siren. It is a fitting end, the song is over, reality sets in, the truth of the lyrics finally sink in, and life starts after paused in this moment of reminescence/melancholic wonder. The song takes you. Almost as if slowly your vision goes from thoughts, to a crime scene or emergency. It's more than perfect for the tone, and I dont think many people pick up on that. When i first heard it and tried learning it on guitar, i thought it sounded like an ambulance, but i never connected the lyrics to it until i was much older and understood the meaning of the song.
@@Wrencher_86 pretty fly is...ok for a radio rock song. its goofy but catchy and memorable with a cool guitar. why dont you get a job is the one that is really bad for me. just annoying. hate the melody kinda stolen from the beatles, dexter voice doenst fit, the whole thing is bad. feelings ia also very skipable. good record though. perfect for the time (sounds like 1999 to me!) and crossed a bridge from what was pop punk then to mainstream rock.
And btw. Part of the appeal of punk was it sounded like any of us could do it. Talent wasn’t always a necessity. It was more about the lyrics and the feel.
Actually Bad Religion started this kind of upbeat, multivocal choruses since second half of the 80's (oozin' aah's). Green Day and The Offspring actually copied Bad Religion a few years later (mid 90's). Give a try to Bad Religion's "21st Century Digital Boy", "Turn on the Light", "Change of Ideas", "Recipe For Hate"... It was Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz's label Epitaph that released the first successful The Offspring "Smash" and it kickstarted their career. So, any song out of "Smash" by The Offspring would be a great choice too.
I don’t disagree but thought I’d add in, the Ramones did a lot of that kind of stuff. Upbeat music about lobotomies, turning tricks, dying in war. Hey! Ho! Let’s go! But yeah, Bad Religion seems directly responsible for the 90s punk sound.
One of the best bands in the world. 10 million followers on spotify. His voice fits there sound. He is the band. Look it up. And by the way he plays all guitar solos and lead guitar. More talent than alot of anyone will ever have
Damn, i have never seen someone in my entire life say they dont like Dexter's voice lmao, everyone has their own taste, i respect it you know, but damn lmao.
Fun fact: Dexter wrote this after he returned to his hometown and learned that a lot of the people that he grew up with ended up going down the wrong path. He is also extremely intelligent and has a PhD in Molecular Biology.
"Gone Away" is a great song by them, especially if you have lost someone you love. You should listen, even if you don't react. Love your stuff, been a fan for years. I love that you guys aren't "fanboi's" of every song you hear, and give honest reactions.
I kind of like his voice but I like the Offspring a bunch. Come out and Play is the first song I heard from them and loved it They've been one of my favorite bands of this genre since.
I wanted to play professional hockey when I was a kid, I obviously did not get to, but I heard this song in NHL 2014 and it resonated with that crushed dream and now I always make sure to listen to it when I go and play puck and my local hockey rink in the winter
FINALLY!!!! FREAKIN LOVE THE OFFSPRING... HIS VOICE IS A BIT DIFFERENT BUT DEFINITELY WORKS FOR THEM.. IF YOU LIKE THIS SONG, YOU GUYS WILL LIKE,.. ALL I WANT MEANING OF LIFE HAVE YOU EVER GOTTA GET AWAY BAD HABIT COME OUT AND PLAY GONE AWAY (punk ballad) YALL SHOULD REALLY CHECK OUT MORE OF THAT ALT PUNK SCENE FROM THE 90S.. BAD RELIGION, RANCID, SOCIAL DISTORTION
Saw them 3 times when I was an (angsty) teen. Great show! I always thought that the opening riff sounded a little bit like the theme song of the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer ( showing my age)
You really need to do Social Distortion's "I Was Wrong" or "Mommy's Little Monster" for songs in the same "life didn't work out and it's my fault" vein.
Great reaction to some Punk again :) If you want to listen to some 90s Punk Rock that you might actually really enjoy you gotta listen to Social Distortion. They are one of the most influential Punk bands of all time with a very distinctive sound, combining Punk with Country, Blues and Rock n Roll which you all like. The singer Mike Ness has also seen some shit so you get pretty deep lyrics to make you think as well. A good starting point would be the song "Story of my Life" (not the version from the greatest hits but from their 1990s self titled album.
Self Esteem is a great follow up. It's my fav too Another great band of this sort of style is Rise Against. Their lyrics are usually very thoughtful and self-aware. Also they're more in the hardcore style of punk so maybe you'll like the voice better
Other Offspring suggestions are "Gone Away" or "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid " I hope you do a Punk Week or something and get to the other bands you mentioned as they are all amazing and well worth discovering.
This is pop punk. Kids stuff. Metal is where it's at. By the way, try some real punk to see what it actually is. The Exploited, Discharge. Wich destroy this shit.
so, that is what I love about the Offspring, why I rank them my #1 all-time favorite band. Poignant, meaningful lyrics that I relate to, that are therapeutic, that speak to my soul, my heard, and my mind. songs like: The Meaning of Life I Choose All I Want Change the World No Hero Hypodermic Gone Away Defy You Americana A Thousand Days Dirty Magic Fix You Have You Ever Leave it Behind A Lot Like Me No Brakes Race Against Myself Stuff is Messed Up What Happened to You
Ryan was out as soon as the vocals started!!😂😂😂 I mean, he soldiered through it, but you can tell he was SO disconnected. Rubbing his eyes, laughing and shaking his head. George: Stayed pretty locked in, in my opinion. Great vid, y'all! 😂😂😂🤘🏻
Love how they instantly picked up the tone of the song with those comparisons to Sum 41 and Blink 182. Offspring NoFX and Green Day were massive influences on those guys.
Funny enough, I think these guys might like Sum 41's newer stuff since they have essentially become a metal band. Some of their best work has been their heavier stuff.
To me, The Offspring has a very upbeat, sometimes comical, way of presenting serious topics. You might want to check out some of their other songs like "Self Esteem", "Come Out and Play", "Gotta Get Away", "Bad Habit", and "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)".
The title is a play on the song "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who on the album My Generation 1965 Fun Fact: the singer, Dexter Holland has a PhD in Molecular Biology
These guys got tons of radio play back in the 90's. Not my favorite genre but will admit their tunes were pretty damn catchy.. I always though Dexter had a cool voice.
I think the upbeat tone is almost the "fake forced smile" representative of the suburban melancholy of the 90s.

NOFX is a must also !
Bad Religion is a band I've only recently started to get into. They're great. "We're Only Gonna Die", "Infected" and "American Jesus" are top notch songs.
I agree…something happened between Smash and Ixnay On The Hombre. The music changed…the attitude was gone.
This is not just The Offspring's best song. It is one of the best metal tunes ever!
@@shack8110 calling it metal is a stretch, IMO, haha.
You guys have the best reviews on TH-cam. No apologies, not afraid to not like the music, insightful commentary....feels fresh. Thank you.
Jennifer lost the war. First song on their first album 1989. Definitely their best album. Raw. Lyrics are incredibly moving. Sounds amazing.
1st album is my absolute favorite.
Take a listen to "Gone Away". My favorite by the band.
Self Esteem and Come Out and Play are great Offspring songs and should be next on your list from these guys for sure
Grew up with this song blaring through my mom's mini van speakers. FIRE SONG CHOICE SIR'S Y'ALL KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
The video is amazing well produced. Lead singer is a genius he's got doctorate In molecular biology, but he just wanted to rock out
This whole album is killer and legendary. Not a single weak song.
Pretty Fly is bad. Full stop. But I do like this album overall.
@@Wrencher_86 Disagree.
About time you brought some 90s punk! Pennywise! Bad religion. Lagwagon. Social distortion.
And btw. Part of the appeal of punk was it sounded like any of us could do it. Talent wasn’t always a necessity. It was more about the lyrics and the feel.
Aaah my childhood growing up in Gabon, africa
Surfing, skating, listening to the offspring with the boys. Good times :)
More talent than alot of anyone will ever have
Don't worry, guys. It took me like 20 years to get used to his voice. LOL
His voice sounds like Jake Buseey looks. Lol
Damn, i have never seen someone in my entire life say they dont like Dexter's voice lmao, everyone has their own taste, i respect it you know, but damn lmao.
Great song, also almost the entire Smash record is reactable, so many classics.
I have been watching you guys for years it nice to see how your opinion has changed since that first one.
Please gentlemen, its time...BAD RELIGION
"Kids are not always dream killers, but they are definitely dream delayers", Lol, truer words never spoken!
please give ‘Gone Away’ a chance. such good lyrics in that song ❤
Think they will have the same outlook on Dexter's vocal's, but that song hits hard
@@Moparmutt1976 i found a version he did on the piano that was simply beautiful. (within the last few years i believe)
This is not just The Offspring's best song. It is one of the best metal tunes ever!
"How could one little street swallow so many live?" Still one of my favorite lyrics! And the older i get, the more powerful that lyric becomes.
FINALLY!!!! FREAKIN LOVE THE OFFSPRING... HIS VOICE IS A BIT DIFFERENT BUT DEFINITELY WORKS FOR THEM.. IF YOU LIKE THIS SONG, YOU GUYS WILL LIKE,..
ALL I WANT
MEANING OF LIFE
HAVE YOU EVER
GOTTA GET AWAY
BAD HABIT
COME OUT AND PLAY
GONE AWAY (punk ballad)
YALL SHOULD REALLY CHECK OUT MORE OF THAT ALT PUNK SCENE FROM THE 90S.. BAD RELIGION, RANCID, SOCIAL DISTORTION
And pennywise. I have a feeling that they are really gonna like “fk authority.”
@@chriskastner1938 Oh for sure, Pennywise is badass too.
They still put on amazing live shows.
Saw them 3 times when I was an (angsty) teen. Great show! I always thought that the opening riff sounded a little bit like the theme song of the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer ( showing my age)
“Self esteem” is definitely one guys will appreciate
You really need to do Social Distortion's "I Was Wrong" or "Mommy's Little Monster" for songs in the same "life didn't work out and it's my fault" vein.
Their songs are parodic and sarcastic and....he has a great voice and his singing is damn good dude...
Great reaction to some Punk again :)
If you want to listen to some 90s Punk Rock that you might actually really enjoy you gotta listen to Social Distortion.
2:28 90s Punk Rock & NOFX is a must ! NOFX is makin music for generations they are on last tour right now ! 40+ yrs band !
I saw them in Leeds a couple of weeks ago and they were fantastic as always. They need to get round to reacting to NOFX.
Self Esteem is a great follow up. It's my fav too
Another great band of this sort of style is Rise Against. Their lyrics are usually very thoughtful and self-aware. Also they're more in the hardcore style of punk so maybe you'll like the voice better
Dexter's voice is unique and i really dig it. I can appreciate that you do not care for it, but to me, he is really good.
Other Offspring suggestions are "Gone Away" or "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid "
I hope you do a Punk Week or something and get to the other bands you mentioned as they are all amazing and well worth discovering.
This is pop punk. Kids stuff. Metal is where it's at. By the way, try some real punk to see what it actually is. The Exploited, Discharge. Wich destroy this shit.
so, that is what I love about the Offspring, why I rank them my #1 all-time favorite band. Poignant, meaningful lyrics that I relate to, that are therapeutic, that speak to my soul, my heard, and my mind. songs like:
The Meaning of Life
I Choose
All I Want
Change the World
No Hero
Hypodermic
Gone Away
Defy You
Americana
A Thousand Days
Dirty Magic
Fix You
Have You Ever
Leave it Behind
A Lot Like Me
No Brakes
Race Against Myself
Stuff is Messed Up
What Happened to You
You mentioned Bad Religion...my favorite stuff is their early, more hardcore stuff...but American Jesus is a good jumping off point
WHOA OH! I like that part.
if you guys wanna give them another shot, I think a better choice would be Self Esteem or Gone Away, less of a poppy tone
Ryan was out as soon as the vocals started!!😂😂😂
I mean, he soldiered through it, but you can tell he was SO disconnected.
Sum 41 > The Offspring.
@@Are_Eye_Gee_Bee_Why haven't really kept up with the band, but my favorite tracks from sum41 are off of _chuck_
@@Bawitdabadabangdadang yes
'Million Miles Away' is my favorite. Then 'Gone Way'
Smash And Ixnay on the Hombre. Fantastic albums. Self Esteem from Smash, maybe You’ve heard this one.
The vocals suit this punk rock style, which is what this is
Bad ass track. Get some more Tame Impala and Portishead gents!!!
I just realized you guys are over a million subs, that's awesome guys.
So, Bad Habit next?
His vocal delivery is him yelling the importance of the message. And the tone is pure punk.
Ryan would HATE AFI haha 😂
To me, The Offspring has a very upbeat, sometimes comical, way of presenting serious topics. You might want to check out some of their other songs like "Self Esteem", "Come Out and Play", "Gotta Get Away", "Bad Habit", and "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)".
Metallica - bleeding me!
The title is a play on the song "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who on the album My Generation 1965
Fun Fact: the singer, Dexter Holland has a PhD in Molecular Biology
"Come Out And Play" and "Self Esteem" are probably two of their better known tracks.
They really have their own sound within that pop rock 90s style
These guys got tons of radio play back in the 90's. Not my favorite genre but will admit their tunes were pretty damn catchy..
I always though Dexter had a cool voice.
Gone Away would change your minds on his vocals.
Samiam is a very underrated and versatile 90s rock band still making music today that I think people who like The Offspring would like
The dichotomy of the depth tone and lyrics beads versus delivery and vocal stylings is very 90s 2000s punk
I’m THE ultimate 90’s alternative-grunge-rock guy! Was in my 20’s throughout the 1990’s! My favorite genre is the 90’s then the 1965-1976 rock era!
Finally some Offspring! Gone Away is another great one to check out
