That being said, the most fun I've had whipping a car around corners, was in a friends old stock '91 Miata. I absolutely love speed, but there's something about being able to push a car to its limits, without really being worried about wrapping yourself around a tree.

I sell Toyota's. Me and my co worker were having a debate on 4 cyl supra vs gr86. I was mentioning how the 4 cyl supra is only marginally better, performance wise, and yes the interior is a little bit better but, it's not worth paying an extra 18-20k more. You get waaaay worse visibility on the supra and it is less practical. While no one will be able to sit in the back seats in a gr86, you can atleast use that space as extra storage. Supra is exclusively 2 seats. Cost of ownership would be a lot higher on the supra because BMW vs the gr86 using subaru parts. HP mods would probably be better on the supra because it already comes turbo from factory. The supra definately looks better in person I can give it that although, as a whole, considering the huge price difference between the cars and marginal performance difference to me it makes no sense as to why anyone would get a 4 cyl supra over a gr86. Either get the 6 cyl supra or dont bother.
The looks point isn’t even a clear win for the supra because that’s opinion. Besides the ugly usdm exhaust tips I think the 86 looks better in every aspect m
If it had the same 4 cylinder engine as the 90s supra it would be a no brainer. Literally nobody cared about the Supra till Toyota started pushing out those 3s powered ones and winning races. All of a sudden it's on the cover of Gran Turismo. 2jz is a slow turd engine for a track car. Toyota was forced to go back to the 2jz for jgtc and ended up discontinuing the car lol. The 3s motor could make 1000 hp reliably and it weighed less and sat farther back than the 2jz. Even for pikes peak Toyota always used the 4 banger over the 2jz.
@@sambutler1794 True. But if the 4 cylinder had found it’s way to Australia, it’d still be 50-60% more expensive than the BRZ. And it wouldn’t be worth it.
Owned the 4 banger Supra for 6 months. Its a great car, you’ll def get the looks and its a good conversation starter but for the price its not worth it in terms of performance. For 45k ish for the 4 cylinder Supra, you’re better off getting a cheaper car and upgrading it with aftermarket parts.
This is the comment. The A90 supra has what it takes to be a classic. It is just 10k more expensive than what it's supposed to be. Remove the fancy interior, lug in a manual, increase the price of options if necessary, but make the 4 banger start at 35k. I think the partnership with BMW moved the supra project in the wrong direction. I feel like they had corporate executives as customers in mind when they started drawing, and priced it accordingly, but they will pick a Porsche every single time over a supra, the kind of people they went for mostly care about the brand name and the associated prestige it brings.
Owned a 21 Supra 6cy for six months. It's a great car but I don't think it's worth the MSRP of $57k. I did get mines for $53.5k new a few years back before the chip shortage and after the Supra hype had died off. Someone I know paid $91k for his A91. He definitely got more than ripped off. He got raped at that price!!
The interior is definitely where the money goes. If I had the money for a supra, which I don't, I'd still get the BRZ and use the 15K on aftermarket brakes, wheels, and suspension and then put 10K into my piggy bank.

Now lets see what they have to say, id rather sink my money into well thought out performance modifications on the brz for a 1 of 1 car that out performs the supra in every way. for the cost difference you can do some amazing things.
I can tell you don't know anything about BRZs, because otherwise you'd know Cobb has never made any tuning products for the BRZ/86. They don't touch any NA platforms at all.

I mean. It was mainly for the EU and Jp markets for emissions reasons knowing their taxes. Didn't make too much sense to bring them to US market even tho they did anyway but just in a small number compared to the 3.0s. Most of the time its a 50/50 chance that it's marked up as much as a 3.0 or A91 edition or they may be 3-4k cheaper at points.
I don't know if my experience can be generalizable at all, but I could not find a single brz/86 in stock in two US states, a few autos here and there, and buttloads of supras in all configurations. Imho gr86 demand easily outpaced the supply, at least in NE and Midwest US. The same isn't true for supra
"I don't have a 3rd pedal there, but what it does free me to do is left foot break." I do that too when I'm driving other people's cars, as I seem to be the only one with a manual vehicle. But as a proficient manual driver, I still left foot break often in certain situations. Rally driving really helped to engrain that technique, as well as left foot heel toe... which I don't use regularly, but it can come in handy in certain driving situations. So left foot break while blipping the clutch to downshift with your heel. Supra for me 3.0 engine and the value on the supra in the coming years will increase as well as the 4 cylinder. All it takes is for someone to show us what the 4 banger supra can do with the right upgrades
Upgraded to a 4cyl Supra from a 1st gen FR-S and no regrets here. Styling and interior alone are worth the extra money if you don't care about manual transmissions and tiny back seats.
To each it’s own. While I’m happy you got a sports car and are helping to keep these rare type of cars alive, if I was in the market, I’m absolutely getting the GR86 over the 4 cylinder GR Supra.

@@DANNY40379 That's funny. Most of the people who own a 2022 are 30-40. They call this a budget porsche. Anyone can like it especially middle-aged men who are used to rwd good handling sports cars. Or if we use your analogy, the miata is for girls and hairdressers; but still the majority of people driving them don't fit that category.
I honestly have no idea why anyone would want a 4 cylinder Supra....its not even manual...what is the point? Its literally just a budget sports car that forgot about being a budget sports car.
How are you going to compare a manual vs a automatic. The BRZ feels like it has more power because it is a manual and you are shifting. While the supra has a computer doing all of the work making it feel like it has less power.
Toyota is pushing 300+ horses from a 1.6 in the GR Corolla, The 2.0 Supra deserves just as much power at the very least (if not ~ 400hp like the AMGs 2.0)
When comparing a turbo car to an NA engine it would be good to mention if there are any cheap Stage 1 tunes that sizably increase HP/TQ since with the NA engine set up you don't have that option for $300-500 more.
No contest! BRZ a superb looking little sports car. As for the interior finish, well if you want plush, by a limo! The "hard" surfaces in the BRZ are not that bad, for the price. You won't be breaking a finger nail by touching them. Keep the weight down and the athleticism up. The Supra, is so try hard with its " Bat mobile" looks. Ugly as a hat full of backsides. That is why I will be ordering the BRZ, manual, top trim in WR blue, this week.
Really wish Yota would've just thrown thie 2.0 Supra power plant in the 86 and exclusively offered the Supra with the 6! But everything is all about $ and guess some numbers guy told them it wouldn't be lucrative! Oh well. Great review as always! ✌🏽❤️✊🏽
The new 230i needs to be compared to these cars. You can get a BMW 230i with all the performance goodies and still be slightly under the 2.0 Supra and have useable back seats, better rear differential, better infotainment and better interior. It should definitely be on your radar if you are looking at these two cars.
the supra looks great inside and out. I like the brz exterior but the interior looks so cheap and tacky. And what's up with that weird airplane tray looking thing sticking out by the glove box area? It's hideous
this comparison makes no sense when the difference of cost is literally over $14k. You don't look at the 86 in the same stratosphere of the Supra in terms of cost when one starts with $29,XXX and the other begins at $43,XXX. Also in terms of value, the 2.0 supra is not $14k better than the 86, especially at only 250hp. The supra is the redheaded step child; too expensive to be compared to miatas and 86s, too slow to compare to other mid 40k cars.
Sit in the Supra and you will see how terribly narrow the view out the windshield is - I would never own one for this reason alone. I've never seen such a narrow view and I've had an Elise, various Porsches, driven Corvettes, Ferraris etc. For the price of a new 4 or 6-cylinder Supra a used Boxster/Cayman makes a lot more sense.
The only things that makes the 2.0 Supra relevant is the turbo not to mention will make more power than the n/a brz/ frs…. But price range the brz/ frs takes the cake
I would say the new model is very grown up. As a matter of fact I think all new Japanese cars have very mature styling in their newest models, including supra, Z, brz. The only one I think still looks childish is civic type r, with all those wings and canards, the car looks like the dictionary definition of a ricer.
I forgot the new Z exists. Yeah, that might be a good purchase. 6 cyl Supra is $100k which is just nuts for a Toyota. If Mazda come out with the RX-9 it's game over for other manufacturers.
@@paulklp8262 would love to see a rotary sports car from Mazda. But I wouldn't bet on it, especially considering how volatile energy market will be this decade.
@@Soh90 Thanks, all good man. In my case, having already owned an FR-S, spending 30k for just a slightly better engine wasn't good enough. The styling of the new one did nothing for me. Still a very good platform and lots of fun
@@MPortnoy2007 Came from a 2013 FRS to a 2020 3.0 Supra and didnt regret it! I have not seen a 2.0 in person yet, but would love to feel how it drives compared to mine :)
@@AgentHysteria Likewise. I haven't driven the 3.0 but it will be in my short list once it's time to replace my 2.0. Can't tell you how it compares but if we go by what others say, it would be lighter on the nose and more nimble and confidence inspiring on back roads, while with the 3.0 you get the excitement of better acceleration, tail happy and better sound tho I still expect it to be great on back roads. Congrats man
Why are you buying a sporty car if you don't care to shift for yourself?
It's called bending your head to enter the car. Many sport cars require the head bending technique.
6MT BRZ all day!
Agree on the looks. The Supra seems over styled. Plus not a fan of all its fake vents.
supra is a sports car, the brz is a drivers car. Pick the one you want.
brz is for young adults/teenagers
@@DANNY40379 That's funny. Most of the people who own a 2022 are 30-40. They call this a budget porsche. Anyone can like it especially middle-aged men who are used to rwd good handling sports cars.
Or if we use your analogy, the miata is for girls and hairdressers; but still the majority of people driving them don't fit that category.
@@Toymonkeyjr yes, hairdressers
@@DANNY40379 troll
I honestly have no idea why anyone would want a 4 cylinder Supra....its not even manual...what is the point? Its literally just a budget sports car that forgot about being a budget sports car.
How are you going to compare a manual vs a automatic. The BRZ feels like it has more power because it is a manual and you are shifting. While the supra has a computer doing all of the work making it feel like it has less power.
Would love to own the new BRZ/GR86, but sold out here in Germany in one week.
Okay Okay Okay Okay I will will send it yonder
No contest!
BRZ a superb looking little sports car.
As for the interior finish, well if you want plush,
by a limo!
Pretty sure all BRZ were allocated as of last month. Don't think you can order one now. Lmk tho not sure if what I said is accurate.
@@PBrooksSawyer Not here in Australia.
I may have to wait until near Xmas, but I won't mind.🙂
Really wish Yota would've just thrown thie 2.0 Supra power plant in the 86 and exclusively offered the Supra with the 6! But everything is all about $ and guess some numbers guy told them it wouldn't be lucrative! Oh well. Great review as always! ✌🏽❤️✊🏽
Have the BMW 230i in the comparison would be nice too.
For me it comes down to price. GR86 ftw
you can drive past 50mph with the window open in the BRZ without damaging your ear drums
The new 230i needs to be compared to these cars. You can get a BMW 230i with all the performance goodies and still be slightly under the 2.0 Supra and have useable back seats, better rear differential, better infotainment and better interior. It should definitely be on your radar if you are looking at these two cars.
Thought the manual was only coming to the 6 cylinder supra
Great video BRZ wins!
the supra looks great inside and out. I like the brz exterior but the interior looks so cheap and tacky. And what's up with that weird airplane tray looking thing sticking out by the glove box area? It's hideous
@3:25 you guys test eating in the drivers seat too?! Now that's an important part, but where's the verdict?
The passenger seat is so far back in the Supra I feel like I’m watching one side of a McLaren F1 lol
If we're being honest, Bolt ons and Tune will make the Supra's aesthetic match its power a lot better.
this comparison makes no sense when the difference of cost is literally over $14k.
Wait, did they really compared Subaru BRZ with Supra instead of Toyota GR86 ?
some say gr86 is actually 250+ HP stock.
The BRZ 0-60 is 5.5s now? Initially it was over 6s. Hmmm.
Yeah we were discussing these two and holly molly, Toyota throws the 2023 AWD GR Corolla into the mix. I'm def picking up the corolla instead.
The only things that makes the 2.0 Supra relevant is the turbo not to mention will make more power than the n/a brz/ frs…. But price range the brz/ frs takes the cake
Wish we got the 4cyl Supra in Australia. The 86/BRZ is too childish.
The new one is very grown up. You are associating the car with a lot of the people that buy it.
I consider myself lucky to be able to get a gr86, and hopefully will save enough to be able to get a s650 with a v8 before they finally ban cars.
I'd expect Mazda to at least come out with a hybrid or EV NE, which I would buy in an instant.
One has an open diff
I was under the impression that the Supra is only getting a manual for the 6cyl engine
I believe the original rumor was that the 4 cyl would have one and then rumors came out saying the 6 cyl would have one.
They both use a ZF 8speed currently. If they design a manual, it will work for both cars.
Does it matter neither of them are actual Toyota's. I have owned owned a AE86 GTS and two generations of the real Supra. I dont mind Subaru but the BMW Supra is a hard pass for this JDM guy....
Easy Choice BRZ because it is actually JDM
Gonna factor rtv issue woth brz tho. I wish toyota and subaru just jot it right but that killed it for me. Ill he selling my 22 brz and getting a supra instead.
😂
"technically I am your boss..." - not funny - don't do that
which car is right for your pocket you mean
I would take an 86/BRZ/FR-S any day over that BMW with a Toyota badge.
The 86/FRS is a Subaru car with a Toyota badge. If you take off the Toyota badge from an 86 there’s literally a Subaru stamp on the back of it. Seen it for myself.
@@moldyrefrigerator They are made in the same factory. Even the engine has both the names on it. But that's still different from claiming to be a Toyota but with a BMW engine.
Instead of the acting i would have really loved two guys actually talking about cars
looks always win, supra rules
Supra sounds like a bit of a dud. At least compared to the brz. And considering the price
Supra is longer but has a shorter wheelbase…Supra looks better and with a tune, much faster than Brz/GR86…
Why use a BRZ? Would have just got the Toyota 86...
Ahaha the guy that was reminding the driver he's his boss so obviously isn't into cars as much as his job would suggest lmao he literally said "I don't know if a manual is required" ತ_ʖತ
Edit: HE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HEAVY STEERING YALL. WTF. ರ_ರ
The BRZ sounds stupid. I saw a video where they switched off the fake sound and it was so much better!
Lol, I didn't even know they made a 4 cylinder "supra"
2:15 deam right!!
🇺🇸SUPRA LOOKS BETTER BY FAR.
And the winner is!
*GR Corolla*
Waiting for the Supra with manual tranny
Too bad interior (BMW wins so Supra wins gtfo if you say otherwise) is not the #1 or even #5 thing people care about when cross shopping sports cars. Where is the talk of handling, acceleration, etc
I'd take the brz over that BMW
4 cyl bmw yeah, 6 cyl B58 hell no! That engine is a GEM
THE MIURA T-SHIT!!!!
wtf? no drag race. yall missed it with this video. waste of time. talking about interior the entire time smh
one is a manual and the other isnt. thats all I need to know
BRZ is teenagers' car Supra is grownups' car
This is true there really is always some kid in a brz.
@@KpopNiDontStopthe average age of purchase for a BRZ is a 30+ year old. It can’t all just be rich parents buying it for their teenager.
Cousin crashed his brz within weeks of owning it
What an idiot
Supra needs a manual otherwise its not even in the running
The answer is gr4 corrolla !!!😄 🤣
BMW is the reason why the Supra is auto… smh hopefully they do release the manual version for real.
Might as well just wait and get a GR Corolla. Its faster than both of these.
Guy lost all credibility when he said there’s a time in your life where a manual transmission doesn’t make the sports car a better driving experience. 🤣
Some guys have bad knees when they're young. When your 70 years old, paddle shifters are kinda fun too.
The answer is neither, get the nissan Z instead
Why would anyone buy a 4cyl supra 🤣
The extremely famous JGTC Supra GT500 racecars on many many posters...are 4cyl cars. Eventually Toyota switched the a V8 before the cars retired, but the most famous cars were 4cyl cars not 6cyl cars. Just some food for thought 👍
The BMW Supra burns oil badly- hard pass.
? :D
The Zupr4 feels "Premium" due to it be essentially a Z4!
If I had to choose, I would pick the Supra in a heart beat.
5 sec vs 5.5 😂😂😂
My Mk3 Supra is still better than the Mk5, BRZ for the win.
