Imposing tariffs also raises the prices of resources required for construction, fabrication, engineering, production, etc. - and raising those costs ... which ends up raising the costs of production and manufacturing ... which is passed on to the consumer (making for HIGHER PRICES) ... as well as potentially leading to lost jobs (because goods cost too much, businesses have to cut back or shutter). Tariffs only lead to severe economic depression for the country imposing them - especially in a free-market, capitalist world.
I know this is the tariff effect in reverse, but either way they're damaging. A few years ago, China put tariffs on Australian wine, barley, lobsters and a couple of other things. Those businesses struggled greatly and it took time to open up new markets elsewhere. China has now recanted and relations are somewhat improved, but it's a massive lesson of what can happen, as well as to not put all your eggs in one trade basket.

Taxes pay for the upkeep of society to ensure things get done. Trump has no idea why taxes are essential to any thriving society.
He just knows that the rich don't want to pay their fair taxes, and they are the ones financing him for another 2T dollar tax cut.
His idea would hurt red states more than blue states once the revenue from Calif. & NY used to prop up poor red states disappears.
Ever hear of a society taxed into prosperity? Me neither.
@@davemichael6994 Yes, Sweden tax rate is massive, the richest pay the most, and they are a very prosperous nation, as indeed are other Scandinavian countries.
Brit here.
Look at any prosperous European country and you will find:
High quality public services
Decent infrastructure
Good pensions and care for seniors
Good pay for those in employment
All paid for by high taxes on both employers and employees.
If you want to avoid taxing the rich, and have low taxes for the middle and lower classes, poor public services, crumbling infrastructure and poor pensions must follow. They are not mutually exclusive as any decent economist will tell you.

1) There's generally been an unwritten code that the most recent ex-president doesn't critique the current one because they know how difficult the decisions can be. That's generally led to most ex-presidents retiring out of the spotlight.
