Shout to all of us who have lost their nonnas, grandmas, nans, poppas, grandpas, babushkas, and all other grandparents, whatever they are named in your mother tongue. Seeing you cherish your own grandma reminds me how I miss my own. She passed away a decade ago last year and I miss her every day.

My husbands Nonna made a dish she called Sicilian chicken. It was potatoes made very similar to these but she added chicken thighs and onions and made it s meal. She was from the eastern coast of Italy but grandpa was from Sicily and she would make his favorites dishes often.

Something like that is or was very popular in Providence, Rhode Island, Italian chicken and potatoes. However the potatoes are roasted with onion etc in a pan with the chicken. You'd find this dinner a lot in family-owned restaurants.

My Nonna made this exact meal on occasion. It was a special meal and you knew it was coming by the smell coming from the kitchen an hour before supper time. When I was a little boy, a perfect day she would make me pasta Fagioli for lunch, and roasted chicken and potatoes for dinner.

    • @anti-ethniccleansing465

I tried this _AMAZING_ potato recipe that I randomly found on TH-cam, including it in a big New Years Eve dinner for my significant other and I, which ended up being insanely more time consuming and laborious than I thought they would be, but _they were THE BEST DAMN POTATOES I’VE EVER EATEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE OF 44 YEARS SO FAR!_ 😁
You cut them up in 1-2 inch chunks (not strips, but cube-ish shaped), boil them until cooked, and then cover them in olive oil and any seasonings you want (I used sea salt, lemon pepper, tarragon, rosemary, and thyme - I _MIGHT_ have used some minced garlic too; I can’t recall tbh, as I roasted carrots and green beans that night too which I know I definitely used a ton of mince garlic, as well as in the Beyond fake beef meatloaf I made, so my memory is fuzzy if anything that night left out minced garlic because I just love the stuff lol... ofc many folks chose to leave them simply with salt and pepper).
_ANYWAYS,_ at that point, after they are cooked from boiling, you put them on a cookie sheet and roast then in the oven, flipping them every 10-20 mins, until they are properly browned/crispy on all sides. It was _SUPPOSED_ to only take ~40 mins in the oven, but I accidentally had my oven on a bit lower than the recipe asked for, because I had just finished roasting my carrots/green beans which required less heat and forgot to change it, so it took a good hour and a half just for being ~25° _(MAYBE_ 50° at most) lower than it should have been. Grr.
Long story short - I was sweatin’ my hiney off constantly opening the oven, taking out the tray of potatoes, and flipping each and every one every time. Talk about tedious! If they didn’t turn out as revolutionary as the cook promised us they would be, I think I would have screamed loud enough for the whole town to hear me out of pure exasperation - as cooking them made me 10 mins late to my S/O’s house, thus missing the stroke of midnight. :(
But, wouldn’t you know it - that cook was _NOT_ lying, and they were the most unique potatoes I’d ever had the good fortune of eating! They were soft and melt in your mouth creamy almost on the inside, and crispy and deliciously flavored on the outside. My S/O wasn’t even told that I cooked them uniquely yet when he said after a few bites, “These taters have such an amazing texture! I’ve never had any like them before - they are super good and I’m very impressed!”
Now, I would _LOVE_ to cook them often because of just how damn delicious they are, but I haven’t made any since New Years over a month ago because of how much labor they required. I would _LOVE_ to know if they would come out good with your gadget so that the flipping every 10-20 minutes aspect of the recipe could be ignored all together. That would be _GLORIOUS_ and then I would most _definitely_ make them regularly. I wonder if they would they crispen up enough, with not sitting in their juices/oil? Would they come out dry, or possibly even burn?
If you wanna try them, the recipe can be found on the TH-cam channel _”Internet Shaquille,”_ and the video title is _“Why Aren’t Your Potatoes Crispy Enough?”_

My mom and grandma always made these and they are my absolute favorite and I can never make them the way they do which in on the stove top. I can, however, make them in the oven 😁 but it heats the whole house up, unfortunately

This is a great method for cooking roast potatoes. Although you should try swapping out the olive oil for beef fat. Gives it an insane flavour!
Olive oil is great if you wanna be healthier, although beef fat is just luxury mm.

I twished my ma/grandma had cooked somehow like this - they would have gotten positive feedback and therefore more motivation,,,,,So I had to learn cooking rather by myself (which is no bad thing anyway) ...

Oh, wow. There is so much wrong with this dish.
Firstly, the potatoes need to boil or at least soak for a bit to help with the straches. You wouldn't make gnocchi with raw potato?
Seoncdly, the size is too small and inconsistent. Get them much bigger so emphasise a fluffy middle.
Lastly, and the wosrt bit, do NOT use olive oil. Its smoking point is way way too low for crispy potatoes,; they're going to be greasy and soggy.
3/10 (for the flavourings), in this case nonna does not know best.
