Poseidon surrendering to Zeus at the risk of being shamed by him and all the other gods, just to save Percy, was the reason they changed it so the solstice was passed and the war was still going to happen regardless of Percy returning the bolt. It gave more meaning to Poseidon’s love for his son.
I personally like how we get to see Percy technically 'fail' big time on his first quest. He's late! But he still tried and Poseidon showed his love by looking past all of that. In the books, Poseidon says that he cares about Percy and Sally a lot but doesn't really show it in ways that aren't superficial or underwhelming (from my memory anyway, I might be biased). This time it's clear that it's not about Percy's supposed glory at completing the quest but because he cares for Percy himself which is cool. Also, I just like that Percy failed but still kept trying. I think it sends a great message to kids, especially marginalized kids or kids who just struggle, that yeah you might fail sometimes but it's worth fighting to keep on going.
@@b.l.j.cPlus, film is super different from a book, and on a tv show, if they hadn’t reformed poseidon’s character to form a strong relationship w percy and sally, then when luke was trying to recruit him by pointing out all of the wrong the gods do, it would be extremely confusing for ppl to watch the show and see him attempt to defend the gods with no material to defend. without the addition of poseidon actually caring about his son and being prepared to sacrifice himself for him, it would be really confusing onscreen to understand how percy could possibly be so adamant about defending the gods. plus, i loved the poseidon zeus scene bc that little jab from zeus about his “swift victory” where he smirked and poseidon rolled his eyes allowed for a recreation of the humor and humanity (in personality) of the gods that was shown at the beginning of the first book when chiron and dionysus describe the poseidon zeus fight as starting out w them fighting over whether sea disasters are cooler than air disasters and whose power was stronger and who their mom rhea loved more
The bit about Annabeth fearing spiders was actually a clever use of "tell, donxt show", as Luke used it to explain a metaphor instead of just saying it like a random factoid.
Yeah. "Show, don't tell" isn't as serious of a rule as a lot of people think. The issues with it is when it doesn't have a purpose. But this had a purpose behind it. Which doesn't make it a "show, don't tell" violation.
Exactly! Should've read further, I just wrote out a reallly long explanation about why this is actually a show-through-telling on so many levels. PASTED: I actually like the change of how Annabeth's fear is revealed. Not only does it allow for an excellent way for Luke to demonstrate the threat the demigods present for the gods, it also hints at the conflict of Athena and Arachne in a different way to Medusa, earlier in the season. Even after Annabeth has bested Arachne, she has to grapple with the fact that Arachne might've been right: Athena did resent her for being more talented (just like the gods resent the demigods for being, in some ways, freer and more powerful). I enjoyed it, it really didn't feel like a moment where they chose to tell, rather than show, because of the context it gives, or will give. It also SHOWS us how well Luke knows Annabeth, and adds a layer to the scene where Luke realises Annabeth has heard everything: clearly, in Luke's mind, Annabeth is a motivating factor. This scene is where, unbeknownst to Percy, Luke is first trying to recruit him. Planting the ideas that would explain his allegiance to Kronos. And the person that comes to mind to explain the unfairness of the relationship between the gods and demigods, the threat they present, and Luke's resentment towards them: Annabeth. It just works so well.
I actually liked the way that Luke told Percy about Annabeth's fear of spiders. It was very natural dialogue that didn't feel like exposition, it just felt like a tiny fun-fact about Annabeth that helped to demonstrate the idea he wanted to convey. If he just said "You know how spiders are scary and small?," it would still be a good metaphor to demonstrate his point, but adding the fact that ANNABETH is afraid of spiders made it more personal to him, Percy, and the audience. In my opinion, that's an example of great writing!
“He slashed the sword and disappeared into a ripple of darkness.” I believe this means that Backbiter did have the ability to open portals, it was just less obvious in the books.
I was scrolling looking for this comment! I was like "wait, did I misremember that?" Because I definitely remembering it happening at least once in the books.
Never even thought of how he was able to simply do that! But it definitely feels like the ability was forgotten after TLT. Unless there was another obscure use of it that I’m forgetting
If I remember correctly it was because of the unnatural fusion of two metals that were never meant to be forced together like that, the celestial bronze and the mortal [steel?] Causing it the ability to just.... rip into things that way.
The reason why Percy failing the quest is more meaningful in the show is because now both Luke and Percy failed their quests from the gods. Luke got pity while Percy got glory. Also makes it more interesting for book readers to make that change.
Yes, exactly! I wrote this too, but just saw your comment. It is the same path, different outcome. Same coin, different side. I think that's why they made it fail. One got evil because of it and the other good. Which might spark for a "that's just an excuse" line from percy
Didn't Percy not fail the quest? The oracle never gave a specific deadline, he just failed to prevent the war on the solstice but succeeded in his quest
I appreciate them giving Luke more characterization and screen time, since in the books we see almost nothing of him before he starts poisoning and killing people. With this version you can see that his intentions are good and that he's not a bad guy, which will make his eventual descent into a complete villain even more tragic.
I don't know how i feel about that, I always found it more nuanced how he was a genuinely unlikable guy that was doing something for fairly understandable reasons, but going about them all wrong and that is why I thought Luke was a good villain. He was morally ambiguous but we still knew he wasn't a good guy.
I especially like that he tries to recruit Percy first, showing that he not only values him as useful ally but also that Luke kinda cares about Percy and would be his friend, and only going for the kill when Percy cuts him
The one thing I hate is that they never brought up the story about his quest. There was a perfect time to fit it in this episode, when percy said the gods tried their best luke could have told the story about his quest. He did everything he was supposed to his entire life, he struggled as a demigod, and hermes couldn't even be bothered to give his son an original quest, he gave him one hercules already did. And since luke failed all he got out of it was a scar and pity.
@@johnsai4074That is a great detail to his hatred, I just reread that scene in the book. They have more time though, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pepper that in the future
12:54 to be fair there is a mention in the first book that A “ripple in the air” was created when Luke slashed his sword which he does use in the books to escape camp half blood. It’s just the book it’s not clear if it’s Luke’s power or the power of the sword. In the tv show it’s just explicitly a power of Backbiter.
which I couldn't put my finger on! thank you. I was thinking the portal power comes from the old animated series "class of the titans" that cronos uses with his blades
I just reread the first with all the hype of the show and I was thinking the same thing. But even since I originally read them, in my headcanon the sword could essentially cut through space and let Luke walk through to somewhere else.
I was too young to see the Harry Potter adaptations in real time, the last one came out when i was five. The fact that i get to see Percy Jackson come to the screen in real time is gonna be one of my favorite memories of my late teen years, im so happy that the series came out at a time when I could experience the excitement of seeing a series I love coming to the screen in real time. I’ve been a fan of the books since 2015, so it’s been a long wait, but so worth it to see the lightning thief get the adaptation it deserves. Shout out to Disney and rick riordan for this memory, and hopefully many more. Even with just one season, this is an experience I will never forget. Hope y’all enjoyed it as much as i did, and peace out till sea of monsters
same here, im 3 years older than you are so its even worse timed for me. I was 8 when deathly hollows came out so i was too young since all the later ones are PG-13, and the ones that were PG came out before i was born (only exception being prisoner of azkaban which came out the year i was born), sadly im 20 years old now so im a bit too old for percy jackson now but i did 100% grow up with the books + heroes of olympus + trials of apollo and the magnus chase/kane chronicals
@@klydejohnson7520 nope this is the first time the book has been adapted. Some people confuse Percy Jackson with some random, stupid movie they made a while ago. A movie which stole the names from the book, and made up a story called "Percy Jackson and the Magic Pearl Hunt." It's a very predictable story about some random kid who runs away from camp to save his mom from Hades, who, predictably, was the bad guy all along. But the guy who stole the bolt, shockingly enough, was the whiny little gamer creep who very clearly hated the gods very early on in the movie. And he learns the only way to get out of the underworld is to use these pearls made by Persephone So when they end up there, and realized they were dumb and only brought 3 pearls because Percy forgot his mom existed, they very clearly cannot just go back out the way they came in, they must leave that one random guy there forever (even though Hades was unconsious and couldn't chase them). And Persephone who was right there in front of them couldn't make any more pearls, cus uh, she didn't want to I guess. After they get back to the empire state building, the climax of the movie begins, remember that random creepy gamer guy i mentioned earlier? turns out he stole it after all. and so Percy fights the random kid from camp (occasionally using the lightning bolt he already knew how to use). He then gave the bolt to zeus and they all lived happily ever after.
I didn’t expect them to have changed Luke’s betrayal scene from the pit scorpion, but I honestly think it was more impactful and safe to say the moment I realised that Annabeth threw her dagger, which is also *the* dagger, I immediately broke into tears. Leah’s delivery of ‘I heard everything’ breaks me
it's a big change, in the book, Percy woke up after being bitten, and says, "It was Luke, and Annabeth just doesn't believe him. This time, she KNOWS he betrayed the camp.
@@DryBones271 I feel like we’ll still see Annabeth refusing to believe it entirely throughout the series, it’s a big part of her storyline that she constantly believes in Luke and that he hasn’t changed. I imagine it’ll be more a sake of ‘Luke can come back’ rather than ‘Luke hasn’t betrayed us’ also considering Percy said about 3 times that Luke’s being manipulated by Kronos. Idk but I trust Rick and where he’s going with this because all of the changes so far have worked nicely
@@littlelove13hate to break it to you but they already aren’t following the books correctly . She believes it already and it’ll stay that way . This show is a disgrace to the books
@@littlelove13shitty ass show. Remember when everyoen though this tv show would be faithfully to the books? This show has the opposite. Joke show. I enjoyed the movie more than this.
@@WZ4RD3Thing is, in the books, Annabeth believes Luke betrayed camp, but she also refuses to give up on him and doesn't want to believe that he can't be saved. Though if you don't enjoy the show then that's your opinion, to which you're entitled
When Percy called Kronos "Grandpa" I absolutely died laughing, that was brilliant XD also, yes Backbiter did have that power in the book, it was just very throwaway. When Luke left poisoned Percy, he slashed backbiter through the air and vanished. Theyve just expanded on that a bit
@@bowtiesrcool86 My thought is… That’s Who Kronos is Sally! Percy’s Grandpa. A Morty facing out against his twisted Rick. Morty Prime vs Rick Prime It ends the same. The villain dies by the hero’s hand. Only it is the apprentice and not the grandson.
In an interview, one of the showrunners explained that "I thought there was something interesting about removing all of Percy's obligation to do the right thing and seeing him confront that. Even absent this sacred responsibility to move forward, there's a different kind of responsibility."
Poseidon surrendering the war for Percy made that kinda pointless change completely worth it in my eyes, and I love how much of a petty bastard Zeus is by rubbing his "victory" in.
@@mellow3995Zeus is pretty terrible all around. One fan theory that I've read is that it was actually Poseidon and not Zeus who had saved Thalia because the pine tree is associated with Poseidon while the oak tree is associated with Zeus. He definitely did nothing to save Jason Grace's life!!!
@@WarGrowlmon18 No, it was Zeus who saved Thalia Zeus turned Thalia into a pine tree (a tree associated with Poseidon) as a way to honor his brother and indirectly tell him "yes, I know I broke the pact, please don't take it out on my daughter"
While I adore the books, having Percy fail Zeus' deadline - which by the way is NOT part of the prophecy but something the old windbag imposed - was IMHO an important change because it gives Percy a lot of agency. While he is originally pushed into the quest, he completes it not because of a threat or an order he was given but because it is the right thing to do. I would not be surprised if Rick himself (who we know is behind at least some of the changes) was the one who wanted this.
@@MrMirhen I agree. Fail to save someone. To me it’s not Sally because she is fine the whole time and she is saved. The one he failed to save is Luke himself. He failed to get through to him because of the years of resentment and rage against the gods for abusing their powers and murdering innocent people that didn’t have it coming. His father being a prime example, he sent his own son on a quest that left him scarred and humiliated which broke whatever restraint he had left and joined his great grandpa in tearing down the cycle of evil.
12:56 about Backbiter’s “new power”, it’s not strictly a new power. It seems to be the show’s interpretation of Luke slashing the sword midair and teleporting away in the book. Also, I like to think of it as Kronos’ scythe (which is Backbiter’s true form) making ripples in time and space.
One of the creators of the series mentioned the reason they made the change where Percy doesn't make the deadline for the quest. It was because they wanted Percy to return the bolt even when he wasn't obligated to anymore, which makes him seem more heroic and helps with his character development of not running away from his problems anymore.
Exactly after the quest had failed he could have chosen to just go back to camp, but he chose to still go to Zeus and return his bolt. Which is much more heroic and just showed how much he wanted to stop the war
Yeah - I'm of the mind that while I love the actor, I'm sick of the woke, fake DEI in film/shows where they switch obvious ethnicites which they don't really care about but do it as a part of the globalist agenda. ZEUS is obviously not black so why use a black actor? Same for Annabeth - same for Heimdall - same for The little Mermaid, on and on and on. You know what you will NEVER see? You will never, never, neeeeeeeeever see a white man playing the Black Panther or ANY role that is a traditionally black role. I'm not talking about blackface or makeup, I'm talking about a strait up white actor playing the role. It's utterly ridiculous. Yeah, it's OK. I can say this because I'm black, lucky me!
there were so many times i found myself just tearing up randomly this episode. walker’s acting is just incredible, the casting could not have been any better. also cannot believe this season is over, truly one for the history books ❤✨ bring on season 2 (and so so many more) 🥳🤞
Lol you may need to watch more television because this was not good, it wasn’t awful but it was bad, and walker was horrible throughout the whole thing lol he had no emotional delivery and came off so angsty I am genuinely surprised he even had an prior acting experience because he was bad😅
you do realize that hiccups imply issues with filming/producing the show, not things that you personally didnt like about the show right? like ur statement is just worded entirely wrong
One of my favorite things that this series changed from the book was Luke. Instead of Annabeth being Percy’s guide to life at Camp it was Luke which I think made his betrayal sting more and made Percy developing a friendship with Annabeth more meaningful. Also, the scene with Zeus disappointed me because we’re not going to be able to see this perfect portrayal again. R.I.P Lance Reddick.
"I didnt think youd give them to grover to wear". Although Ive read the books and knew luke was the traitor, that line still sent chills down my spine. What an awesome way to reveal the twist, along with both actors really showing how they both dont want to be admitting the truth because they really are friends with them tearing up during the conversation and reveal. Was hoping annabeth had a bit more of a reaction though
Percy failing on his first mission is a pretty good reason for not letting him be the one who goes on the next mission to retrieve the golden fleece/Grover in the next season
But that took out the stakes they had like nothing happened and nobody seemed like they were in a hurry and gods didn't fight so what's the fucking point of having deadline????
Yeah in the book the guard was reading Harry Potter and they argued a bit before Percy offered to leave him with the Bolt instead. The guy sent him right up after that.
8:40 I think the reason they changed it to Percy missing the deadline, was so that Poseidon would surrender to Zeus. Pride and Glory mean everything to the gods, so for Poseidon to throw all that away just to save Percy’s life is a pretty crucial moment and I think a terrific addition to the story
Not only that, with percy missing the deadline now he has no need to take the bolt to Olympus, he already gave the helmet back and saved his mother. He has no obligations, but he chooses to anyways because is the right thing to do, it's more meaningful. Also it gives something in common with luke because both failed their quest with two opposite ends, glory and hate.
I saw a tweet that the deadline passing makes sense because it leads to Poseidon surrendering here to save Percy. If he made it before the deadline Poseidon wouldn’t have had anything to offer Zeus to save Percy because the war wouldn’t have started.
Yep, you got it! That's exactly why. It made their first meeting even more special... showing Percy that his father cared more about him than winning the war.
At first I didn't understand this plot point, but it makes sense now. It shows Poseidon really cares about Percy by surrendering, thus influencing Percy to disagree with Luke in the end
Do yall NOT realize if you read the books both Zeus and posidon were in the throne room waiting for Percy to come with the bolt ? This change wasn’t necessary. NONE of the changes were necessary. Tbh this show should’ve been pg-13 not rated pg .
@@WZ4RD3you’ve been a hater in all these threads smh…no changes are “necessary” but I’d argue most of them make the show better because they give more depth to the characters. It doesn’t need to be exactly like the book to be good. Also this series is supposed to start out being for kids and grow into a more mature series like Harry Potter did, the story will grow darker as the kids get older (and so will the target audience - it’s not just for us longtime fans)
I love that they missed the deadline. The war was going to happen. The Lotus Casino has the time bending element. So why waste those key story elements by having our trio magically make the deadline? It raises the stakes having Percius push through even after an emissary of Poseidon tells him he failed. Failure is only final when you surrender.
That Lotus Casino element was not wasted in the book, it was used to create tension by making them very narrowly miss the deadline, which makes it more satisfying. Also, I don't understand your complain about "magically making the deadline" when in the show they magically miss the deadline. It's literally the same thing, except Percy failed his quest. He didn't stop the war, Poseidon stopped the war by surrendering. It's not a good chance at all in my opinion.
I think the reason why they made Percy "fail the quest" was so that the Poseidon surrender could be more meaningful maybe.. I agree that it wasn't really necessary but I think in the eyes of Camp he still succeeded anyway. Love your reviews, thank you for uploading every week! Can't wait for S2.
thank you for saying that in the thumbnail. seeing people get so mad with the show and actors because things wherent 1 to 1 with the books. its exhausting. but i think the cast did amazing and rick is clearly proud of the end result
I LOVED this episode, but I wish we got to see Annabeth have a bigger reaction when she realized Luke was the traitor, because at the time she had such a big crush on him!
Um, I think by the time it occurred in the TV series, any crush had shifted to Percy. However, I do agree, I would have also liked to have a much stronger reaction- but she could have also been in shock. However, the fact that she followed them, to me, demonstrated she already had suspicions about Luke... so her reaction may have also been muted because it was something she had expected.
there's no official confirmation but it feels like Annabeth's crush on Luke was written out since we don't get nervous interactions between them and chose to focus more on them being a family. But maybe it'll appear in other seasons, who knows?
I think they are saving that for season 2. Annabeth dealing with the impact of him being a traitor. here they needed to wrap up and couldn't linger on how she's dealing with that reveal.
Appreciate your reviews, great stuff!! Even if I disagreed with parts of your reviews, love the genuine passion and thought process you put in. Hopefully we get a season 2 and a season 2 of your reviews!
1. The first time percy actually sees his dad is when the king of the gods tries to personally kill him and Poseidon stops it and yields immedeately whatever war was either about to start or was possibly a day or two in. He's surrendering and giving Zeus the petty W for the sole sake of Percy's life. That's some serious show of love right there. 2. Zeus points out that Percy is forbidden and Poseidon points out Thalia but instead of bringing shame to it he praises Thalia and appeals to Zeus' vanity (you can notice Poseidon's change in speech pattern when he's doing this) 3. This one is going to have the potential to be controversial for a few reasons, but it's my comment, I'm in the kitchen, let me cook. Lance Reddick was the perfect casting choice for Zeus and from the frame of this universe's storytelling, let me explain why. The gods are personifications of rulership over certain aspects of the world, but more importantly, because Western Civilization rose under their management (along with all the implications that would have on the world as a whole) and partly because they aren't actively worshipped as they were 2000 years ago, their guises and ways they look change to better reflect the times they live in. To give several examples of this, in order, Ares looks like a mashup of war veterans from Vietnam to the Gulf War, because hey, the greek gods live in new york and non-implicitly give their favor to america in this universe, they're gonna look like the "joe baseball" of their archetypes according at least, to western pop culture. So Ares looks badass, but he also gives the vibe of the worse aspects of american vets as well. War Isn't glamourous. Haphasteus gives the vibe of distinguised scientists from 100 years ago (or at least, the stereotype of them for the longest time), but also the dishevelment takes on the western pop culture influences of Doc Brown and Rick Sanchez. Poseidon, funilly enough, looks like the fittest version of Jimmy Buffet meets Sig Hansen from Deadliest Catch because hey, God of All the seas and Oceans takes his looks from Margaritaville to Dutch Harbor. And Zeus? He's in New York, Championing a nation where most of the big Artists in the last decade or so have been African American, recently had a black president, and as king of the gods, looks the part of Authority, check check check, but also in a universe where they all stay on the 600th floor of the Manhattan building like it's an incredibly grand hotel room, who better to look like than someone who was concierge of the Continental Hotel in New York City, Charon from John Wick?
@@theanimeunderworld8338It's hard to accept that more people love it than hate on it? It definitely has flaws, short runtimes hence the pacing, but the good writing makes up for it. @@theanimeunderworld8338 the movie is a bit over reliant on style compared to this one having a bit of more substance, so not really. Honestly my problem with this season just goes a bit with rather 6 being the most mid at worse, but they still got the momentum right by the ending at least. The change with Medusa I was disappointed initially, but I somehow liked it a lot more thinking about it, well watching it as well. Now I did say something about the show having more substance, I think it prob leans on it too much on that spectrum, but I somehow don't mind it. Tho thinkin about it, I think having the excitement and action from the movie even as bad that one gets with the emotion of this show could make a hell of a perfect one. Wishing a best luck for season 2 to listen to everyone's problems with some things and amp it up soon.
I loved this episode so much! I think the curse could be fixed easily when it comes up in the Titans curse. The one thing I really disliked was Olympus, I really wanted the warm, white marble sprawling metropolis with the agora’s and vendors and nymphs. So it was a little disappointing. But Zeus was played really well (rip 🕊️) I didn’t mind Percy and Luke’s dialogue but I didn’t like annabeth being there, I preferred her hearing it from Percy because it really built more relationships between her and Percy and her and Luke. I hope there’s a season 2!!!! Edit: I too also wanted the really tall and really decorated thrones, it just looks really depressing.
Does anyone miss tv shows that had like 16-22 episodes per season. They did a great job, but 8 35ish minute episodes just seemed rushed. I feel like if it gets greenlit for more seasons, each subsequent book's corresponding season is going to need more episodes, solely based on how much more dense and detail oriented the next books are.
Yesss that's what I've been saying it's soo rushed I miss when episodes used to be longer , disney + is so annoying wating days for the episodes then it's 20min long .
One thing I actually liked a lot about the Luke/Percy fight! Percy slashes Luke across his chest very clearly, but doesn't do any damage. But when Luke sliced Percy's arm, you can see it. So they do show how Backbiter is different
@@WZ4RD3 We can strongly assume that Backbiter had this ability. Yes he just slashed his sword and the ripple happened, but how else would this power be explained? We also know that Backbiter is another form of Kronos's scythe, and Kronos being the Titian of Time, It would make sense his weapon has this ability. And since Rick was on the show and this happened with his approval while being one of the few things that remains the same in the scene, it makes much more sense to conclude that this aspect carries over from the book and is an ability from Backbiter. You have to jump through a lot more hoops to find an alternative solution than this one.

The explanation for Percy “failing” the quest, is just dramatic tension. One of the show runners talked abt it in an interview on a podcast. It was a “shock” to new audience members and book members.
I think the scene of Luke trying to recruit Percy was actually an interesting and pretty well-executed choice. Throughout the season Luke is dropping hints about how he feels about the Gods. We see that a lot in this series more than in the book. The Gods aren't great parents. I think Luke trying to slowly convince Percy that the gods aren't all that great was a nice way to lead up to him asking Percy to join him and Chronos. It didn't feel too out of the blue to me. Also adding that Sally was trying to keep him away from camp half-blood to avoid becoming "like the gods" was not only a good choice for Sally's character but also adds more inner turmoil for Percy considering how Luke wants him against the Gods and Sally already kind of planted that seed. I'm hoping if there is another season that this scene will help bridge the gap between the "mentor/friend Luke" to the more "obviously evil Luke" that is in the Sea of Monsters. Despite the changes, I think this season was really well-made and thought out. I think they also made changes that we might not like right now, but only because we don't see the effect the changes will have in the grander scheme of things if we get more seasons. But overall I'm so happy with this series adaption. Props to Rick, the directing team, and of course Walker, Leah, and Aryan. 💙🔱
honestly, luke and percy's fight scene was my favorite (plus percabeth tree scene) BY FAR. just as with ares vs percy, i think the show made the whole sequence much more personal, and it aligns a bit more with the show's new lore; in the book, luke went with the scorpion because he wanted to kill percy, but in the show kronos mentions he *needs* percy alive, so obviously luke wouldn't go with an option that could kill percy, instead recruiting him in order to fulfill the prophecy and kronos' plan. it aligns SO well and when chiron confronts percy about him agreeing with some of the things luke said, it shows how important for luke and kronos it was (and is) to persuade him. this ep was soooo good ughh, and the duration was honestly perfect !! i wish the whole series had kind of the same duration (30min) eps instead of short 20min ones, i think the pace is much better when you aren't jumping from scene to scene in a rush > < this ep was peak percy jackson frrrr. now we just PRAY for season 2 renewal ....
I agree. All of the minority of 'haters'... "they made this or that change... boo hoo". Rick said he wanted to FIX mistakes he made or has since decided he wanted to make changes that he wished he would have thought about back when writing the books. What bugs me are these people acting like the author himself doesn't know what he's doing, or that it's "badly written" when it's coming from the author himself. If they love the books so much, perhaps they should just stick to reading the books- because they cannot do a 100% adaption within the limited time-frame of TV series episodes.
Them having Luke and Percy fight is fine but Annabeth being there is so dumb. She is supposed to spend basically the entire series holding out hope that Luke is really good and will be good again and now that won't happen bc she saw him being purely evil. That also creates a tension between Annabeth and Percy bc Percy knows that Annabeth keeps a soft spot for Luke, but now that can't be the case. HUGE MISTAKE
How in what way did Rick make a mistake ? He changed the entirety of the story . So by his words he’s saying his story is a mistake . Because how all of this happened didn’t happen in the book . And it’s not a boo hoo cry fest when Rick himself said this was a faithful adaptation that we all have been waiting for and wouldn’t you know it that was a fucking lie
@@ADarklorewhy do y’all say that samething “ you can’t 100% adapt a story .” Um hate to break it to you but we have hunger games , we have Harry Potter , we have fucking twilight . And you blind fans aren’t helping making excuses saying,” welll um you can’t 100% adapt .” YES Yes you can it’s not impossible yall are just accepting whatever because you been waiting so long and MOST of yall forgot the story itself and how things panned out .
Now that it’s over the things I’d change in season 1 are the following: 1. Make the loudus episode more interesting (like the books) 2. More moments of Percy outsmarting people and them saying his name (giving him power) 3. Explain that names have power 4. Make the Di Angelo’s visible in the casino 5. Explain the blue food (preferably in a flashback, I’d love to see that interaction come to life) Other than that it’s really good
Id also add making Gabe more cruel. He was basically a comic relief character this entire season and they didnt even include the reason why Sally married him in the first place
I think they need to add more suspense to the monster and gods scenes (besides Zeus) like I was never on the edge of my seat with these creatures. Whether the camera work, effects, or acting I just wasn’t sold on how dangerous this world is supposed to be.
I hated the Lotus episode cuz its the one thing the movie did better. Obviously they didnt need to show Grover being a womanizer but the slow suspense of Percy not eating the lotus & finding out a guy doesnt know what DVD is still a masterpiece scene for me
I really liked changing it so Annabeth was there for Luke's betrayal, something the musical did that I liked here. But the two things they need to change moving forward are longer episode runtimes and no more abrupt cuts to black.
I loved when he was gathering the wave and he said the line 'Who I am' because his wet hair made it dark and his eyes were really green, so he actually looked like Percy!
This was such a fantastic episode and season! Your reviews really helped me to understand more, since I haven't read the books. Hoping I can get a few of them read before season 2 comes out! Did you see the "making of" documentary of the series? I thought it did a great job showing how hard these kids worked and just how much went into the production as a whole.
18:08 The book did mention that after Luke set the scorpion on Percy, he swung Backbiter in an arc and disappeared in a flash of light. So Backbiter does have some sort of transportation power.
Backbiter's portal-making-abilities aren't really new, that's in the book (luke portals away after poisoning Percy). It's just expanded in the show, with Luke making multiple portals, and us actually seeing these portals, instead of it being like an instant flash-and-he's-gone type thing
Love coming to see your videos after every episode. Being the 1% that never read the books i like knowing about the easter eggs and everything that they changed.
Honestly my only big problem with this show is how short the fights are, sometimes non existent. I know they didn’t have a huge budget so I can forgive it
Skipping Ares curse is such a weird and confounding decision because that’s literally so important for Titan’s Curse. Luke’s betrayal felt anticlimactic since Percy explained everything before Luke could get a word in, and Kronos felt like a sniveling awkward guy who wants a hug
I would always wait for Wednesday to watch the episode and then watch your review cause of how well you point out detailed information that I didn’t noticed . Keep up that amazing work ! 👏🏼👏🏼
You did such a great job recapping these episodes and I looked forward to every one. Thank you so much for your research! I was also not a huge fan of the Backbiter upgrade. But it was kinda the only way to explain his escape. If I had to guess, the show-writers will don their GM hats and retcon a handicap on the sword like it can only cut a certain number of portals or something. But that was my only big complaint. I thought it was a fantastic episode and your recaps have definitely made me like the series even more.
god I hope this show gets a second season, the amount of set up to the Sea of Monsters was unreal. I LOVE this show, even the changes made, makes the show even better. 10/10 5* Cast is amazing, and also RIP Lance Riddick, Only got to play Zeus for one episode.
I deffo think Disney+ isnt gonna cancel this show esp since this show got good ratings. What I hope is that the next season, the kid who'll play Tyson is accurate to the book. And the writers learn from show dont tell cuz half the time characters just relay exposition.
In the book, Backbiter actually does have the ability to teleport Luke (at least it's implied). In the book, Luke swings Backbiter and disappears so I'm assuming they just explained that a bit more and made it clear that it can teleport Luke/open portals
This episode was very well done. I loved the scene where Percy figures out that Luke is the Lightning Thief. The only thing that I wanted is that the fight scene between Ares and Percy to be a bit longer. I knew it was going to be a 5 minute fight but I was expecting a little more fighting before the Tidal Wave and the slash at the leg.
I really enjoyed this show. It wasn't perfect but honestly it was pretty darn good. I hope the creators take the legitimate criticisms for the first season and use it to make Seasons 2-5 even better! Fingers crossed for longer action scenes from here on out!
I hated when Grover asked “how sure are we you can’t explain everything in an email” when demigods can’t even use technology because it’ll attract monsters
Personal opinion: abuse plot with Gabe should stay. It made his character extremly unlikable so when he was gone, it felt really good and it’s an actual relief, also it builded up Sally’s character as a strong and selfless woman who sacrificed her own happiness to protect her son. Here Gabe is just…meh. He’s not bad enough to hate or even give a damn about him, he’s just there. He reminds me of my aunt - he’s annoying, yes, but not enough to hate him.
the point of percy failing was to deepen his relationship with poseidon wherein poseidon sacrifices his pride (which is EVERYTHING to gods) by surrendering to zeus - immediately making his first meeting with percy INCREDIBLY impactful while also convincing us AND percy that there are gods capable of trying it also serves as a deeper parallel between athena and poseidon, where earlier athena literally left annabeth to die because of her pride while poseidon sacrifices his to save his son
The point of Percy failing the quest is to show his perseverance, that he still chose to see it through to the end even though Zeus could’ve killed him.
Adaptation wise, the series are great! They follow the book/overall story pretty well plus/minus certain scenes. However, I do think that the show has tons to improve on in terms of flow, direction, episode length (longer), script and tone of the show. It needs to be less serious, the trio need to let loose, joke around, be kids, not know everything from the get go.... i.e. keep the suspense!! the show needs to show more than tell, and fasten the beat of its scenes, being creative with its exposition scenes to avoid being boring. PJ has so much potential, and I don't want stubborn management to mess it up. Truly hope they listen to fan feedback. They need to start filming ASAP. I enjoyed the finale, I only wished the Ares fight was longer/more grandious. P.s. i haven't watched the video yet, wanted to share my thoughts first. Love your video essays !!
I really enjoyed this episode. But I was really disappointed that Zeus and the thrones on Olympus werent gigantic. It would have fit much better with the "scary and small" part. And also make the gods look much more menacing.
I actually don’t like how Percy is the one to figure out Luke is the real traitor. It made more sense for Luke to reveal himself because he really did want to kill Percy in the book, once with the winged shoes, and a second time with the pit scorpion, and this betrayal was more effective because it shows that Percy had a great deal of trust and admiration for him up until that point.
I'm not sure it would honestly take rocket science to figure it out. Once Percy realized that Clarrise was still there, all he had to think about was... who is someone 'called friend' that was left? He didn't have a big list to go through. Pretty much Annabeth, Grover, and Luke.
Honestly I think they did a pretty good job overall with the show and adapting the books. One thing I wished was that they built up Luke’s reveal a lot more. It was kinda just dropped on us but they should’ve built up suspense and had Luke slowly reveal it while Percy and Luke were sitting talking about the prophecy or something like that, just slightly altering what ended up happening in the show. The scorpion crawling up his leg would’ve also been amazing to see too.
This was a roller coaster of a season. I wish the Ares fight were longer & he’d taunted Percy like in the book. I like Olympus & Zeus’ Shakespearean demeanor (RIP Mr. Reddick). Overall a great start to a promising series!
i wanted to like this series but i thought it was dissapointing hopefully season 2 will be better felt like a low budget show in my opinion especially with the ares fight
100% agree, especially about Backbiter's new power. I loved it. Kronos looks incredible and has a Darth Sidious vibe ... recruiting powerful halfbloods to come to power
I have several problems with this show, which I won't go into details about right now, but the actor playing Zeus was amazing. Dude was legit intimidating. For a second, he actually made me believe he could strike me down with a lightning bolt.
It would be awesome to see your reaction and commentary to The Hero’s Journey, the making of Percy Jackson. It opened my eyes up to some of the changes and it was so cool to see how the show was made. I loved seeing the off camera interactions between Walker, Aryan, and Leah. It also made me tear up hearing everyone talking about how special the books are and what it means to everyone.
I really liked this episode, but a part I didn’t exactly like was that Percy got a hit on Luke. Luke is supposed to be superior to Percy and getting hit by Percy kinda defeats the point of that
Percy was taught by Luke himself and is depicted as a natural swordsman. If anything, Percy is the one character in the books who can actually match Luke in combat. The only time that he had trouble was when Percy was a little out of practice and Luke was using a shield while Percy didn't have one.
I realized after reading the books again during the series stream I found that the scene with Luke and Percy in episode 8 isn't a flashback but a preview of the future because I know it sounds weird but Percy starts talking about his Quest and the gods then Luke says later how "Your fighting has gotten better I see". Something along the lines of that proving to be a scene that shows what happens when Percy comes back to camp before Luke turns on him.
Poseidon surrendering to Zeus at the risk of being shamed by him and all the other gods, just to save Percy, was the reason they changed it so the solstice was passed and the war was still going to happen regardless of Percy returning the bolt. It gave more meaning to Poseidon’s love for his son.
It also ties up the conversation Grover and Ares had a few episodes back.
Overwhelming force and a quick surrender
yeah came to say this
I personally like how we get to see Percy technically 'fail' big time on his first quest.
@@b.l.j.cPlus, film is super different from a book, and on a tv show, if they hadn’t reformed poseidon’s character to form a strong relationship w percy and sally, then when luke was trying to recruit him by pointing out all of the wrong the gods do, it would be extremely confusing for ppl to watch the show and see him attempt to defend the gods with no material to defend. without the addition of poseidon actually caring about his son and being prepared to sacrifice himself for him, it would be really confusing onscreen to understand how percy could possibly be so adamant about defending the gods.
plus, i loved the poseidon zeus scene bc that little jab from
zeus about his “swift victory” where he smirked and poseidon rolled his eyes allowed for a recreation of the humor and humanity (in personality) of the gods that was shown at the beginning of the first book when chiron and dionysus describe the poseidon zeus fight as starting out w them fighting over whether sea disasters are cooler than air disasters and whose power was stronger and who their mom rhea loved more
@b.l.j.c Holy crap I didn’t even notice! That’s such a good call back!!
Fr, that was a great analogy. I'm glad they mentioned it
It was awkwardly written but still a good metaphor.
COOK! ppl treat “show, don’t tell” as a hard-and-fast rule. it was such great dialogue
Yeah that entire scene was SO GOOD and I'll take it over the Waterland scene any day.
Indeed, it was very well written dialogue.
It also explains how he was able to so easily steal Zeus’ bolt and Hades’ helm
Never even thought of how he was able to simply do that! But it definitely feels like the ability was forgotten after TLT. Unless there was another obscure use of it that I’m forgetting
Yeah I was gonna say... I remember it doing that in the book. Just yknow, minus the explanation from Luke.
Also makes it more interesting for book readers to make that change.
top tier comment
This!! They are clearly two sides of the same coin.
@@davidjames8331Chiron told Percy he had until the solstice to get the bolt back to Zeus. Percy technically failed the quest bc of that
I appreciate them giving Luke more characterization and screen time, since in the books we see almost nothing of him before he starts poisoning and killing people.
I like that they didn't make it blatantly obvious that he was a villain early on like they did in the movie.
Oh yeah I was gonna say, Backbiter absolutely has this ability in the novels.
I just reread the first with all the hype of the show and I was thinking the same thing. But even since I originally read them, in my headcanon the sword could essentially cut through space and let Luke walk through to somewhere else.
wait that's true, I didn't remember that
I was too young to see the Harry Potter adaptations in real time, the last one came out when i was five.
Lol I’ll let u pass cus u young but this the second time Percy was adapted 😂
@@klydejohnson7520 no it's not, normalise bad movie erasure
same here, im 3 years older than you are so its even worse timed for me.
I think we're the same age, although I haven't been a fan as long as you I only got into the books in the last 2 or 3 years
@@klydejohnson7520 nope this is the first time the book has been adapted.
When Percy called Kronos "Grandpa" I absolutely died laughing, that was brilliant XD
also, yes Backbiter did have that power in the book, it was just very throwaway. When Luke left poisoned Percy, he slashed backbiter through the air and vanished. Theyve just expanded on that a bit
when Sally told Percy not to call him that, my thought was: well, technically speaking he is.
@@bowtiesrcool86
My thought is…
That’s Who Kronos is Sally!
Percy’s Grandpa. A Morty facing out against his twisted Rick.
Morty Prime vs Rick Prime
It ends the same.
@@WarGrowlmon18 No, it was Zeus who saved Thalia
Zeus turned Thalia into a pine tree (a tree associated with Poseidon) as a way to honor his brother and indirectly tell him "yes, I know I broke the pact, please don't take it out on my daughter"
@@MrMirhen
I agree.
The quest didn't have a deadline, the deadline was for the solstice to stop the war from happening. So he didn't actually fail the quest right
@@davidjames8331the war still happened, just a quick surrender

I can think of a couple replacements for the role in a future season: Idris Elba or Peter Mensah come to mind.
@@brycecarroll9665 I was thinking idris too!
@@mriddleyI want Percy to go to his funeral
Apparently Lance had a blast doing it too.
Oh that’s a good point. Even as deliberately awful as Dionysus is, that did feel weird
youre right, i think a lot of people are thinking too small when it comes to this show and aren't thinking of things they are setting up to do later

But that took out the stakes they had like nothing happened and nobody seemed like they were in a hurry and gods didn't fight so what's the fucking point of having deadline????
The fact that Gabe lifted up a literal severed head to get a better look and immediately got turned to stone will never not be funny. 😂😂😂
I laughed at the part where he asked a lawyer if they knew how to pick a lock. If they told him and he got caught, they could kiss their job good-bye.
"I'm here to see Zeus. I don't have an appointment." So bad ass! :-)
Yeah in the book the guard was reading Harry Potter and they argued a bit before Percy offered to leave him with the Bolt instead. The guy sent him right up after that.
@caitlyncarvalho7637 Bad idea: the ADHD is their battle reflexes and that just dulls them
I know a lot of people already said it but wow, Walker's performance was excellent. He's really going places, I can feel it.
@@WZ4RD3ion know about none of the changes being necessary😅
Backbiter had that ability in the first book, but Rick completely forgot about that in the other books.
I just watched the episode, and it's amazing. Seeing Lance Reddick in what was essentially his final role brought tears to my eyes.
He died only 4 to 6 weeks later.
@@WarGrowlmon18 That IS soon.
@@ColtonRMagbyYeah. At least he had a blast doing this though!!!
@@WarGrowlmon18 True.
I think he was incredible. I was absolutely terrified for Percy the entire scene 😂
Now I need a season two. It was so surreal seeing my favourite book series (that practically raised me) faithfully adapted and damn near incredible.
Don't you mean "dam" near incredible, lol?
Thanks for catching that 😂😅
2. Zeus points out that Percy is forbidden and Poseidon points out Thalia but instead of bringing shame to it he praises Thalia and appeals to Zeus' vanity (you can notice Poseidon's change in speech pattern when he's doing this)
To give several examples of this, in order,
Ares looks like a mashup of war veterans from Vietnam to the Gulf War, because hey, the greek gods live in new york and non-implicitly give their favor to america in this universe, they're gonna look like the "joe baseball" of their archetypes according at least, to western pop culture.
This Zeus was the Morgan Freeman of the Olympus and I really wished we could see more. R.I.P Lance Reddick :(
Was a great book adaptation
Eh....
I think it suffers from some mistakes the movies did

@@theanimeunderworld8338It's hard to accept that more people love it than hate on it?
It definitely has flaws, short runtimes hence the pacing, but the good writing makes up for it.
They were given short episodes, so they worked their way into those short episodes and still managed to do good writing.
Pretty sure BackBiter can open portals as thats how Luke gets away in the novel
I was waiting for this all day.

@@-._.-What-Is-Up-._.- What about the Hunger Games?
One thing I actually liked a lot about the Luke/Percy fight! Percy slashes Luke across his chest very clearly, but doesn't do any damage. But when Luke sliced Percy's arm, you can see it. So they do show how Backbiter is different
12:14 His sword did have this power in the first book. Its how Luke escaped after setting the scorpion on Percy.
No he didn’t have that power because it was never explained luke just slashed his sword and a ripple happened . You’re head cannoning stop doing that
@@WZ4RD3 We can strongly assume that Backbiter had this ability.
@@connord5827 alright answer me this if he can just cut open doors why did he need the labyrinth to storm camp half blood ? You see ? It’s a plot hole now as opposed to how the book did it
@@WZ4RD3 Well we see the portal close right as he enters for one, so it could be time capped before it collapses. Also, any other way this portal was made immediately becomes a plothole because why wasn't that used instead of the Labrythn too? If this was Kronos doing it why didn't he do it again? No matter what there is a plothole lets be fr. And, let's be honest there are plenty of plotholes in PJO and RIck could have just forgotten about it like he did with many other things. I swear I remember Ares cursing Percy’s sword during the Aphrodite scene in book 3, not in the Ares fight...
You're right
Yeah me too!
Nah it was in the ares fight tho
@@isaacbrown7936uh no you haven’t done your research
I thought he cursed him in their first and just reminded him about it in the aphrodite scene, More so to remind the readers.
Honestly. Percy failing the quest, yet persevering anyway shows his strength of character and determination.
Now that it’s over the things I’d change in season 1 are the following:
1. Make the loudus episode more interesting (like the books)
2. More moments of Percy outsmarting people and them saying his name (giving him power)
3. Explain that names have power
4. Make the Di Angelo’s visible in the casino
5. Explain the blue food (preferably in a flashback, I’d love to see that interaction come to life)
Other than that it’s really good
Id also add making Gabe more cruel. He was basically a comic relief character this entire season and they didnt even include the reason why Sally married him in the first place
Di angelos could not have been there as they need to be the same age in two- three years
I think they need to add more suspense to the monster and gods scenes (besides Zeus) like I was never on the edge of my seat with these creatures.
10/10 Episode, can’t wait for season 2!
I loved when he was gathering the wave and he said the line 'Who I am' because his wet hair made it dark and his eyes were really green, so he actually looked like Percy!
8:46. Had to make it more relatable to all of us kids completing assignments past the deadline
RIP to my my boy Lance Reddick a great actor you will be missed. Gone but not forgotten may God bless and keep you.
I absolutely LOVED the design of Olympus. It actually looks grand and beautiful. I also loved the fact that they used Ancient Greek.
I hope we get season 2
Yessir
LOVED this show, was literally everything I wanted and I know they'll improve on it more for season 2. CAN'T WAIT!!
18:08 The book did mention that after Luke set the scorpion on Percy, he swung Backbiter in an arc and disappeared in a flash of light. So Backbiter does have some sort of transportation power.
I love how Luke was carrying the lantern just before his betrayal. Really gives visual cue to Kronos
I know they didn’t have a huge budget so I can forgive it
12-15 million per episode
You are a great youtuber and you really scratch my itch to here another fans opinions on the show. Keep it up :)
Overall review: I liked it but episodes could have been longer and it could’ve been more action hopefully we get a season 2 with more budget
ZEUS ACTOR PASSED AWAY?!?!?! wow that was unexpected and sad, I did very much enjoy his acting.
Hi movie flame I love your vids hope you continue the reviews for trials of Apollo 😃
I fell asleep during the finale and didn’t think much of it but your video makes me wanna watch it again.
Watch Zeus be Samuel L Jackson. 😂
The sea doesn’t like to be restrained is a reference to the musical in the last song. Which I find is just so funny and cool 😂😅
Ok, this episode was way better than I though it would be going in.
I really enjoyed this show. It wasn't perfect but honestly it was pretty darn good. I hope the creators take the legitimate criticisms for the first season and use it to make Seasons 2-5 even better! Fingers crossed for longer action scenes from here on out!
Nothing beats the book and it’s just hard to bring all of what makes the book best to screen
The fight between Aries and Percy was Epic!
Also, I love the slow reveal of Luke being the traitor.
Here's hoping for S2.
Ngl I wish the ares fight was a bit longer but other than that it was an amazing episode
I really enjoyed all your videos about the show especially the comparisons to the book were really interesting!
I hated when Grover asked “how sure are we you can’t explain everything in an email” when demigods can’t even use technology because it’ll attract monsters
How stupid, it must be one of the details that Rick regrets having added in his books
They can use technology, they can't use technology that makes their voices travel through th air, like cell-phones
They can use technology tho. Annabeth literally used Daedalus's laptop in the books
What a great finale and series!
the point of percy failing was to deepen his relationship with poseidon wherein poseidon sacrifices his pride (which is EVERYTHING to gods) by surrendering to zeus - immediately making his first meeting with percy INCREDIBLY impactful while also convincing us AND percy that there are gods capable of trying
it also serves as a deeper parallel between athena and poseidon, where earlier athena literally left annabeth to die because of her pride while poseidon sacrifices his to save his son
The point of Percy failing the quest is to show his perseverance, that he still chose to see it through to the end even though Zeus could’ve killed him.
i don't like ending changes. luke poisoning percy was better than this.
also gabe is much less disgusting and is kinda not hateable and funny
Stupendous review, Morgan! I guess, this series deserves an Emmy Award soon.
I don't care what anyone says, it was SO sudden and rushed - they fit all of that in ONE episode. The fight with Ares was so anticlimactic
This was a roller coaster of a season. I wish the Ares fight were longer & he’d taunted Percy like in the book. I like Olympus & Zeus’ Shakespearean demeanor (RIP Mr. Reddick). Overall a great start to a promising series!
I would love to see you do a every diffrence between the show and the books. Like the one you did with harry potter

Luke is supposed to be superior to Percy and getting hit by Percy kinda defeats the point of that
He’s not superior at all , he had more experience in that moment. But Percy Jackson is the goat for a reason
