I know you don’t have to do it But can you please do a video on what if they made a third Percy Jackson movie? I saw the second Airbender movie you made and it was funny. For example, Zoë could be blonde and has light skin, compared to darker hair and olive skin in the books. And there can also be a monster from the fourth book into the third movie, like Kampe or a sphinx.
Im enjoying it but the dialogue is generic if rick make a chinese pantheon series i might be interested for me i would like it if sun wu kong is the main protagonist but he is reincarnated in the modern day and didnt complete journey to west he died on purpose but in order to be reborn he has to enter the body of women thats compatible and has a lot of spirit energy so he manage to enter the body of this k pop or j pop idol why j pop or k pop is because for comedic porpuses even though he is in their Chinese pantheon he isnt even chinese not that hes chinese to begin with he was a monkey he enters this idols body and becomes her child this idol is a young girl who is only 20 years old she has never been in a relationship but is now pregnant with sun even though sun just wanted to use her to be reborn she still chooses to keep him and love him even though she has no idea whats going on flash forward 13 years later sun is a teenager abd yes his name is still sun wukong and he has all his memeories from his previous life but he is still weak because he is now a human and people think he is weird for saying he is the great sage equal to heaven but always get his ass handed to him by bullys. His personality is that he is arragont and mischievous but he kind because of how he was raised,at this point of the story the only person that he care about is his mom and one of the drama would be what would happen if he told her what he did to her, would she still love him.one day his mom went missing when he went home from school and a demon attack him but he was safe by his one friend who was (the son of a demon or god or something,i dont know what)he is a quiet kid who didnt stand out but because sun accidentally save him from being bullied and they now they bully sun instead if him even though sun was arrogant and mischievous he never blame him and said "those weaklings could never beat me im the monkey king"even though they beat him up almost everyday he befriended him even though he think hes weird, sun didn't know who he was but he found out now.he guided sun to this school in the spirit realm for people like him because many demons and god children and other beings here as well.flash forward again after getting to know the school and meet some wacky characters sun duel with one of the strongest character in school and after getting beat up and almost losehe finally awaken his powers and gets his staff and fights the guy he was overpowering him for awhile but still lose because he ran out of magic or something and was knocked out.sun later found out because he is human now he has to train hard to become strong mentally and physically so through out the story he will go through a lot of hardships and grow both in strength and character and this first book is about saving his mother same as percy and something that has to do with Chinese mythology that threatens the world if you have a better idea tell me i would love to hear it.he also has a love interest this serious no nonsense girl who is pretty zen but gets angry at sun for always annoying her her only friend is the guy that beat sun and he likes her she is the daughter of the jed emperor throughout the series she becomes more friendly and playful even though sun and her has a fremies relationship at first and in ine the book's she admits to sun that she likes him and that causes a funny situation where this girl even though serious would try to flirt with him and sun wouldn't know how to react to her advances.what do you think and if some people are feeling weird about sun basically an adult in a kids body dont think about it too much remember the movie big
Fr and I really wish they added the part where Percy sees people dying and going insane in Mr D's eyes. It really highlights how even though he acts stupid he's a GOD. It's a minor detail but I really wish they added it
@@RenaissanceRockerBoy bro I’m sorry but I was utterly disgusted on how this turned out, not trying to be you know racism but Anna Beth being well, black kinda messed with me and also clarise being small btw we’re is Percy’s sea green eyes tho
The scene with Percy making an offering to his mother and vowing to make "His father see them" was pretty dark. You can see that they will intensify the parallels between him and Luke, and how Percy could have gone down the same path if things were different.
I absolutely love that scene. Since we didn't spend as much time with Sally before she got taken compared to the books I was kind of worried that the amount of love Percy holds for her is gonna fall flat a little bit. But they made sure to let you know that Percy would burn the world down to get her back just from the writing and Walker's performance. Super intense, I love it.
Also it’s such a good set up for how Percy constantly stands up to the gods and holds them to account. I also love how they’re making him and Luke closer so that the sense of betrayal sinks in deeper.
Yeah it kinda brings out the bitterness and disillusionment that he feels in the later books and that villainy vibe I think they will carry for the whole series (just in pieces coz we know he'd never betray hi people) and not just this season bcuz z they might want to make it more difficult for percy to choose in the final season
The Percy dynamics with his father is personally my favourite 'changes' from the book. It is more realistic for a kid being raised by a single mother to hated their father. It also made Percy similar to Luke and shown what Percy could've been
yea this change was also my personal favorite. it makes much more sense for a kid his age to be resentful of his father. not only was he just… not there for the first 12 years of his life but who his father is was the reason why his mother was seemingly killed (in percy’s eyes before he finds out that she’s alive) and why he was at camp. it makes percy feel much more authentic as a character since this is how a real person would likely react to the situation. and i also like to think that it’s drawing parallels to percy and luke so that they can be later highlighted by their choices
The only problem with that logic is the fact that they made Gabe actually tolerable and kind of even a decent person but that might just be the actor being too nice@@lucyidek
Personally for me I would not even call this a change I think they're going into it a bit more than the book did but it was actually a thing that was established before he knew He resented his dad for not having the guts to marry his mom and for leaving them so they had to deal with Gabe, event in the second book when he knows who his father is he's dealing with the irritation and feeling abandoned and that his dad doesn't really pay attention to him
I don’t think the child actor did a bad job with Grover it’s just how he’s written on the show. Grover is supposed to be this unconfident kinda shy character
I'm waiting for Aryan to kill it as Grover in these coming episodes. The chemistry he has with Walker and Leah off screen makes me glad to see their bond and his character shine more down the line.
Sally’s “not everyone who looks like a monster is really a monster,” is pretty decent foreshadowing for this show’s iteration of Grover, in my opinion. It’s revealed that Grover snitched to get Percy away from school and to safety, and he’s not the monster of a friend that Percy thinks he is. Even his bodily reveal to Percy - goat legs, horns, not exactly friendly - fits this, as he’s not a monster, but a satyr.
I think Percy focusing on his dad when he gets to camp is to show non-book readers just how awful the gods are as parents. Like: "Here's a 12 year old child who's just lost his mother tragically... and his father is nowhere to be seen'. It also adds to his relationship with Sally because we're coming off of the first episode where it's clear she still has love for Posideon and I think Percy picks up on that and its sort of pissed that this guy his mother consistently visits the same cabin for doesn't show up when Percy thinks she's dead
I liked this approach, too! I feel like it fits really well with Percy's future development, because the series ends with him telling the gods to be less shitty at parenting
Absolutely. His grief is shown so accurately imo. He wants to find his dad to make him be held accountable for what happened in his absence, but is also furious at him for not being there in the first place and making his mother sad. That's the whole reason he makes the gods claim all their children from now on at the end of the series.
I really love the part where Chiron and Mr. D tell Percy to go to the Underworld to reclaim the Master Bolt, and he keeps refusing because he’s tired of getting pushed around by fate. “You are the son of Poseidon!” “I am the son of Sally Jackson!” “… Who’s Sally Jackson?!” This show has the drama and humor down pat.
I actually loved Percy wanting to find his dad so much. It did a good job showing what camp life is like for unclaimed kids, showed how upset and depressed they could be about their godly parent wanting nothing to do with them. I thought Percy wanting to find his dad did a brilliant job foreshadowing his wish for the gods to claim their kids before the age of 13. In the show, he seemed hurt and worried he'd never be claimed, which really reminded me about that wish. Knowing his compassion and kindness for others, it's very obvious he doesn't want that to happen to anybody else, hence his future wish for demigods to be claimed. In the books, he knows it's not right for gods to leave kids unclaimed, but in the tv series, it's being shown to the audience through him, he's living through that scenario, which felt pretty damn effective to me. I know for certain the tv show will still have him demanding gods claim their kids at the end of the overall series already.
I definitely think you need to let them cook as far as Grover is concerned. The changes to his role so far as well as the inclusion of the Council of Cloven Elders means they got bigger plans brewing. Once the quest begins you'll get your Grover.
If I remember right right before they go on quest there’s another scene with the elders that’s about the seeker thing. I didn’t think it was right after they got there but right before they leave. I might be wrong tho
It was kinda wierd how Percy was so skilled with a sword cause we never see him get any training with it. There was one small scene in the books when while training Percy pours a bottle of water over his head and describes feeling a rush of energy before proceeding to disarm Luke. A lot of people overlook that part which is really disappointing
this is defintly not the only scene removed, i belive its for the lack of time given by disney, this scene in perticual also hurt the ongoing in-world logic so it might hurt more than others.. 100% agree
So, Rick did an interview breaking that scene down. On his own, Walker practiced a lot of sword fighting. By the time, Capture the Flag was filmed, Walker had become very skilled to such an extent that he had to remember how to he bad at this. This is more of a, “We have an actor who is a little too good at his job” rather than “Oh, Percy is just perfect with swords.”
so the point of this is percy he was supposed to be bad at this point but walker couldn't fake it? no.. the show got percy to beat 3 ares kids, this is unrelated to walker being good but the show letting percy beat 3 supposedly good fighers while he wasnt even shown to practice once.@@sukhmanisreadingcorner6811
@@sukhmanisreadingcorner6811 thanks for the input, that means he should have really good fight scenes as his character gets to be a great swordsman in the future.
I think they show Grover as snitchy because they didn’t get that extra time at Yancy after Percy’s fight on the field trip. Grover spends the rest of their school year lying to him so this is maybe to show him being covert and having that mission trumping friendship because it’s life and death.
Yeah I think his knowledge of the future events of the series are working against him here. Obviously Grover is conflicted about snitching just like he wasn't terribly convincing with his lying in the book version. Obviously the grover that builds upon that relationship in future books would never betray his best buddy. but a semester of friendship vs your second chance at a searcher's license isn't a hard decision to make.
I agree. It was an interesting wedge to put in between the two characters, given how the story usually goes. It wasn’t what I was thinking at all. But it did get him away and safe. And also Mr Brunner was there! He was 100% watching Percy during the meeting and after, so there was no way he could get picked off by a monster.
@@buttercupup3687 I prefer the gaslighting version because it developed the characters more, built a mystery around Chiron and Grover. The series version felt kinda rushed imo, not good enough and everything was happening way too fast. Like it's been so many years since I've seen interacted with Percy, I wanted the series to spend some time with him. How am I supposed to build an emphatic if I don't know him enough (from a newcomer's pov)
@@harryallen5392 Exactly. The pace is working against the story. We see this affecting Annabeth too. Instead of her being the one to show Percy around camp, they just skipped all that so really all she does is follow Percy around while invisible. Annabeth was a good friend to Percy at the start helping him learn Greek and meet some of the kids there. It's important to see that connection because it helps build that early trust so Percy would take her with him on the quest. Also, she seemed way too cocky in revealing who Percy's father was. In the books she was upset when she figured it out, but in the show she was just smug about it. I get these changes were made for the sake of time, but it's affecting the story and characters negatively. I'm ok with cuts and changes being made to match the tv show medium, but I am not ok with them having the characters say or do things that they would not have done in the original story. Grover would not have ratted Percy out like that. He was insanely anxious and felt guilty about even lying to him in the books while they were at Yancy. If he even tried to throw Percy under the bus to get him expelled, he probably would have struggled to even say the lie in the first place. He was such a bad liar in the books that Percy could easily tell when he was lying and called him out on it. Deception just isn't in his character. Which is why I liked him in the books. He had a good heart and although he wasn't really brave, he overcame his weaknesses to do the right thing and follow his dream to search for Pan. Also the monster that attacked the camp during capture the flag was completely left out. The thing nearly killed Percy, but now that didn't even happen which is a huge deal because that monster set up several story beats that we aren't going to get now. I do like the show for the most part, but if we don't critique it when it has bits that aren't good then the creators won't do better going foward, or they will just see viewership go down and it could risk being cancelled before we get all 5 seasons. Praise it when it does the right things, but also point out where it falls short. If the creators truly care about what they are putting out, which I'm sure they do, then they will be ready to accept criticism.
I think Percy's obsession with his father in the second episode is due to creating a story arch for the second episode where the pay-off is his claim in the end. It didn't bother me too much, and I would understand that you would obsess about your father after you have seen your mother (alledgedly) die in front of your eyes, being thrown into this new world, and then you would learn there is a distant father figure who doesn't give shit about your appearance? I personally felt they should have crafted this a little better, but the general idea feels right to me, even though it's not in the book.
What if what they're doing with Grover's actions is intentionally planned to put the seed in Percy's mind that he could betray him like the prophecy says? In the book it says Percy was worried that Annabeth and Grover might betray him but they never really did anything that could justify that thought process. In the show though, Grover hiding things from Percy might be an interesting plot in later episodes that could lead to Percy learning he can trust him after all. Maybe I'm just looking into this too much
But there is no prophecy he should've heard it already they already told him his quest and he accepted they butchered that entire portion of the story and completely left out the oracle so far.
I actually like the way they made Percy go look for his father because in the first book, Percy only realized that the gods use demigods as tools (after Ares asked them for a favor) and he only acknowledged how awful the gods were to their kids after hearing Luke's, and later on, Ethan's point of view. So I love the fact that they are highlighting this from the start (as it will play a huge role in the " almost downfall" of Olympus). Plus Percy's reaction was more realistic (in the book I felt like before he was claimed, he just accept the fact that his dad doesn't give a sh about him and might never claim him). Your mom, the only family you've ever known just "died" and all you know is that it was related to your dad (and he didn't even care enough to show up), of course you would look for him for an answer
I think they just couldn't have more time at yancy academy yk, and pretty sure in the books grover was lying to percy the rest of the year, him betraying is slightly too extreme but Isn't completely inacurate to the situation in the books
I think that works, too. It gives Grover something new without taking away his character from the books. Here, he’s not just a shy pacifist; he gets pushed around and doesn’t have much of a spine. As the story progresses, with what he ultimately has to do in the books, I think his arc is gonna be incredibly strong.
I really loved Grover too. His bond with Percy, his loyalty was very well depicted for me, and I really loved how he risked their friendship to keep Percy alive. But we can see his shyness too, he's not a big buff protector, but your friendly neighborhood satyr :) I think he is adorable ❤️
Me too especially when I was watching I think episode 7 when Grover played areas like a fiddle tricking him into spilling the beans on who stole the lightning bolt
I think I was most surprised with Annabeth; I personally really liked the detail of her kind of "stalking" Percy and following him around to see what he's about, having her thoughtfully hide in the shadows and really think about how he'll be an asset, so when we see her in the bathroom scene, it's clear she's strategizing, and you can see the gears turning in her head as she looks Percy over, which is so true to Annabeth's character; I loved that change.
YES! I’ve been rereading by the Battle of the Labirynth now and I am getting annoyed by now at how little her intelligence is explored in the books. It is literally her most important power and when you think about how powerfull Percy is (controlling water, ocean, speaking to horses etc) i really feel like there are many times in the series by now that it could have been her to come up with the plans. In the fourth book Percy persuades monsters and realises things and comes up with the plans most of the time and it is literally her mission. And that’s weird, because i actually had the image of Percy being slow to get things and her being smart. So yes, i really aprecciate if they make this kind of changes to show how smart and strategic she is
I also always thought with the bathroom scene that she would have then known who Percy’s dad was, so to me it made sense that she knew after that. I liked the change
@@lauragama4025 Well I think Battle of the Labyrinth was the beginning of Percy starting to understand things more; the third book was really the beginning of him realizing how much he needs Annabeth by his side and how things aren't the same without her, and when you get to book 4, he begins to have more confidence and I think Rick wanted them to slowly become each other's equal and not have one overpower the other especially by the time they become a couple, because when you see them in The Heroes of Olympus, at that point, they're perfectly in sync with each other, especially House of Hades where they really needed to rely on one another because they were all each other had.
@@DC-MarvelGirl1997 you have a good point! I remember very little of the rest of the books after so many years but that makes sense. I am still excited to see more of her strategic abilities show in the series though, like we did with these changes in ep 2 so far
My take on the fade-to-black transitions was they structured it for possible commercial breaks, either for broadcast or ad-supported streaming. Remember, Disney+ has lost billions. The showrunners built the breaks in rather than have some executive make those choices. As for the council having such little screen time, either they discussed something that will only be revealed in a future episode OR there was a concern about the episode's length for the initial release and it will show up in an extended addition (or a bonus material short)
They made Clarisse feel so dope, I loved it. I like how she really felt like the kinda hot school bully who is extremely intimidating and calm most of the time
Yeah, Clarisse was definitely one of my favorite parts of the episode, Dior (the actress who plays her) did a great job portraying her, I’m excited to see more of her. She felt just like the Clarisse from the books
The only thing I can say about Clarisse is she's not really supposed to be hot. She's described more like a warrior, strong, mean and brutal. And even in one of the books she's described to be man like. I definitely like this version so far and can see her doing great in later episodes. But I always pictured her more like a jock bully not a hot school bully.
I have ADD, Asperger’s, as well as apraxia and have always thought I was broken and not right. When Sally told Percy that he’s not broken and that he is hers had me on the verge of tears. My mother has said similar things in the past and that scene made me feel seen.😭❤️
I don't even struggle with anything like that and that scene brought a freaking tear to my eye. Just wanted to hug Percy/Walker and tell him that it was gonna be alright.
Honestly my favorite part of the show so far is how they showed Clarisse. They kept her as this tough kid that instantly felt like the person that you don’t want to mess with. Dior was the perfect casting choice, she did a great job as Clarisse
I don’t know, to me she didn’t feel intimidating. She dint feel like my favourite character from the books. It kinda felt to me that she was just doing the stereotypical “I’m tough look at me” kind of thing. Just didn’t mesh with me.
Also, in the TV show, it’s made pretty clear to everyone that Percy is only going to go on the quest to save his mother. But in the books, he was more secretive about it like “im going on the quest but no one else knows that im only going because of my mom” and the only person who could guess that was Grover, since he knows how to read emotions. I do agree with the fact that it’s going a little too fast. I know there are time constraints and all, but I loved the buildup to every single big event. After Percy kills Dodds, for example, there’s a whole monologue from Percy over the next few weeks about how he was getting constant nightmares, wasn’t getting sleep, calls his teacher names, starts getting worse grades, along with the weather changing even though it was summer, which all buildups to the main Minotaur killing, with each step of the way building more and more tension. In the show, it keeps cutting to the next thing which made it seem fast paced Although I do think they’re going to elaborate more on the characters and explain more about the plot later on (like annabeth asking percy on the quest ‘why do you have blue food?’)
Funnily enough I actually liked the Grover subterfuge a lot in this series as it was personal theory of mine when I was younger that either him or Chiron influenced it so that he could be kicked out just like they explained in the show. To me it shows just how aware they were of this powerful unknown demigod who at that point was unclaimed
I like that theory! Although, it made me really mad at grover, and I don't wanna be mad at him. I personally think that Aryan is going to kill it in these next few episodes!
@@gretarickertsen5035Aryan is really pulling off the “a bit timid and sheepish but means well and is brave when it counts”. Someone said it’s like they shook the books and the cast fell out, and that seems pretty accurate. They’re all so good! Especially being as young as they are.
Both Chiron and Grover suspected that Percy was Big Three material as Chiron personally made a house call to teach at Yancy as before only the Satyr guided the demigods to CHB.
Some things I wished they did was make the episodes an hour long instead of less. The episodes especially the first one, felt fast-paced when they could have added more scenes like the Mrs. Dodd fight. I also wish they added the Luke sword practice scene. I feel like it would show that Percy got some actual sword training and was just not OP from the start. This could also foreshadow the water strengthening him. What I ESPECIALLY wish they added was Percy falling into the water and getting a strength boost when fighting Clarisse because it makes absolutely no sense for Percy to defeat her when he’s only been there for a few days and she has been training for years especially with a 3v1. What I also wish they added was Gabe being more of an asshole. Right now he just feels like a jerk and not a piece of scum. So it would feel wrong if they go the book route and kill him by turning him into a statue. Hopefully they make him more meaner because I do hope they stick with book version. Anyway that’s what I wish they could have added especially if they make each episode an hour long.
I would have liked your changes. I'm guessing they felt okay with showing his strength because 1 - they showed his connection to water in other scenes such as Mrs Dodd and the bathroom and 2 - they showed he was more powerful against Clarice "near" the water instead of in it. A little more subtle, and it adds in a moment of Annabeth's intelligence to figure out he his Poseidon's son.
I didn't mind them skipping the Mrs Dodds fight but the Luke sword practice would've been great. It would've, like you said, gave Percy some sword fighting training explaining why he was able to hold out against THREE ARES kids (it's not like these are Demeter kids where they could probably be beat easily, Ares Kida are tough) despite barely even knowing how to hold a sword. Not to mention it would've foreshadowed their later rivalry throughout the series and I feel like it would've been great cinematography to get those scenes in flashbacks during season 5 when he fights Luke.
Yeah the Gabe thing is sort of a big one for me. I honestly think the first movie did Gabe better. They made him more dislike able and you really got the sense that he was gross, abusive, and obnoxious. In this one, when he was talking with Percy/Sally it really seemed like playful banter, and he didn’t really give off the vibe that he was some failed gambling alcoholic who also took control of the household. He seemed more comedic than anything. I also want to point out that the show doesn’t feel as “urgent” as the movie. There’s a lot of long pauses, slow line reads, and really relaxed reactions here. Which is something I think the movie actually captured pretty decently. I get the movie had to be more fast paced, but some of the moments in the show just don’t feel as intense.
Yeah the movies made have so much better, they made him more like a careless idiot who was meant for comic relief and laughs instead of the abusive asshole his character is meant to be
I’m really hoping that they don’t give Grover the Ron treatment. In the movies they took things away from Ron and gave them to Hermione, they made him seem weaker than he was. If this is the kind of thing happening to Grover I’m definitely not here for it but they still have time to fix this.
My biggest problem with Annabeth in the series so far is that there is so little of her. She shows Percy around in the book, and I'd love to see that in the series, but I guess I'll have to survive with what I get
I think they chose to include Annabeth less because she is a major character during the quest so they pretty much have over 6 episodes to show. I think the first two episodes are to show the characters that don't really appear over the quest but are still important like Luke and Clarisse.
For the beads thing… It was never mentioned in the books how many beads a lot of the campers had, and it makes sense that everyone would have somewhere between like 1-5 of them. Some of the more experienced and older characters (like Clarisse) actually do seem like they would have been at camp for a while, so more beads for them isn’t that surprising. The reason why Annabeth having so many beads is so special is mostly because she’s 12, where most of the campers with more beads *arrived* at camp around that age and are just older now. Annabeth was an anomaly because she came to camp at 7, not that she’s been there a few years.
I also thought that him wanting only Annabeth and Luke to have 5 beads is incredibly unrealistic. There's a bunch of kids and teens, of course you're going to have more 5 bead campers.
While I can agree that Grover's character is very different in the show compared to the novels, I think this dynamic suits Grover as he's willing to risk his friendship to keep Percy alive. Plus, when Grover confesses that he doesn't want to lie to Percy shows how much loyalty he has towards Percy, even going against his superiors' requests to keep quiet about his mother being alive and with Hades. Though I can see why people might not like this depiction of Grover, I also want to believe that Rick chose this route for the character and that it wasn't the actor's fault. But apart from that, love the show so and can't wait for more!
Definitely was skeptical of casting choices (like Annabeth not being blonde, Percy not having dark hair, etc.) but the rest of the show looks and feels like how the book reads, so honestly, very pleased with the show so far! Hope it only gets better from here!
Percy seeing the fates might happen later in the season cuz I do believe that they did cast them and there's actually a picture from their scene floating around. They're sitting in a crowd
I'm sad details like the oracle weren't included bc I remember reading that scene in the books for the first time and it was genuinely chilling, percy was seriously freaked out, reminding us that he really has no idea what he's doing, he's a kid with barely any training, going on a highly dangerous quest
I have to say I watched it with my gf who has nvr read the book or watched the movie and the funniest part was when Mr. Brunner gave Percy the pen and said the line she just shouts: "But it's just a pen!" I balled out laughing as she didn't even know that's how everyone sees it the first time.
Actually i liked that grover outed him, it shows how cowerdly he is in the start which will highlight his character arch. I was super diasapointed at the cloven elders scene as well because we get to learn alot about grover there that i think the actor would have aced. He is an amazing choice for grover, I beleive he meets that standard. Him revealing Percy's mother makes sense because he is trying to get back on Percy's good side, and if you don't see him as that brave yet remember he needs Percy to accept this quest to redeem himself from the Thalia situation. Maybe dont judge what did or didn't put in the first two episodes until the rest comes out, they might explain a little more, Im hoping to see flashbacks to the cloven elders in later episodes (along with a Helena explanation). It seems like they are building up to reveal more about grover with the cut off and new character, I think Aryan did an amazing job so far.
I actually really like the direction that they took with Grover. I personally feel that Grover's characterization was weak in the books and I'm really glad that the show is letting him have more agency over the plot. I really hope it continues.
YESS. It honestly took me a little bit in the book series to like Grover as much as Annabeth and Percy and i think they've done a really good job in these two episodes of balancing him being shy and anxious with giving him more agency and scenes where he gets to shine
My favorite detail is part of Annabeth figuring out who Percy’s dad is. She initially thinks it’s Zeus like in the books because she positions him on a hilltop where Zeus things could happen, but when that doesn’t work, that only leaves Poseidon (ignoring Hades for obvious reasons) so she pushes him in the water to make sure.
The thing about the beaded necklaces. Annabeth and Luke weren’t the very first ones at camp so it’s totally logical that some others have the same amount of years as them. They joined the same year as some halfbloods and some halfbloods have come and gone before them you know. So that part didn’t bother me. Annabeth and Luke having five needs just shows the audience that they’ve been there a long time. Especially annabeth since she’s still so young.
Well, Clarisse was one of the campers that had the same amount of beeds as Annabeth & Luke because she was cannonically one of the longest staying campers in CHB
exactly, no where on the books does it state that luke and annabeth had been there the longest, just that it had been a long time. camp half blood has been around for decades at least. ofc there will be people with equal or more beads then them.
Brunner was also literally right there watching Percy during the disciplinary meeting. AND he was there outside while Percy was waiting for his ride. I’m certain that he was watching to make sure no monsters came and picked him off.
I really enjoyed it, felt a bit fast paced in episode 1 but it was done very nicely. I also enjoyed the 3 kids, feel like they did a great job with the characters.
Yeah a bit too fast for me too. They should make it an hour long for each episode as that is where they can flesh out the character more than in the books or movies
I thought it was slow paced, but left a bunch of stuff out. I think the movie did a better job with the runtime than the 1st episode when covering the same material.
I also thought it was pretty fast paced. I think the episodes are being made to eventually put them on tv so I don’t think the runtime will change that much
YEAH EXACTLY I wish each episode was an hour so that they can fully capture the story, plus I wish they adapted the kids bowing to Percy and had Chiron say the full line cause he skipped out on father of horses
I agree Grover feels different from the book, but for me, this is a good thing. In the book I never really cared for him as a character, to me he only ever existed as Percy's sidekick and for an occasional laugh. In the show he's a lot more convincing to me as a character and I have high hopes because I am actually intrigued this time!
To be fair, this is an issue in all of the PJO adaptations. Percy learns his mom is dead, has some kind of shock and sadness go over him, and then explores camp with his comedic monologue. It’s present in the musical, the books, the movies, and in the graphic novels.
@@sloganreadet1151 , well, the thing is, a book is one thing, real life actor is another. You can read a book "Noo" very loud in your head, but when a "Nooo" is this soft in real life, it feels wrong. How he acted after doesn't bother me that much. In the books it was clear that Percy didn't accept that his mom'd "death". He was full in denial. The way he was not able to focus on her death is how ADHD mind works. But right at the moment, when he saw her ... um ... dissolve into gold dust, his reaction was not a shocked half muffled no, not a panic scream of disbelief, not a "WTF", it felt more like a "huh?" no. Like he just lost in a video game after a long one-life run. A bummer, but not that much of a bummer.
I also think the episodes could benefit from having an extra 10 minutes or so of runtime. It felt like things were progressing too fast without much build up. But I think this series is made to eventually be on television
The Grover thing didn't feel weird to me at all. The first one, when he betrayed Percy, he felt like he needed to do that to successfully complete his mission, to take Percy to the camp alive, and he was ready to do anything because of his prior experience with Thalia, Luke and Annabeth. The second one, regarding telling Percy that his mother was still alive, he was either desperate to go out on a quest (like Annabeth) or he was ordered by the council of cloven elders, and either way it is connected to the search for Pan.
The hellhound might have been nice because it makes you think of how the heck it got into camp, making a small hint to the betrayal of a certain someone.
I am BEYOND excited for this adaptation Mr. D was perfectly cast!! As soon as I saw him I was cackled 😂 and seeing Annabeth's cap made me tear up a little 😅 and Clarisse's scream was definitely chilling!!! So ready to see more!!!!
Mr. D looks perfect but he cares way to much. He's yelling at Percy to take the quest, given with no oracle I might add, to avoid the war when he literally could not have cared less in the books.
@@apluscast yeah and it sucks that they sacrificed story accuracy and amazing side characters for the sake of it being like a pg or g rating and appeasing people. The book is a great story and it's made better by having those hard hitting edgy characters you're supposed to have strong reactions to. When they eliminate that it loses something
@@caseyl4699 Exactly, I really hope Disney does not butcher Eragon because Eragon definitely needs to be PG-13 at the minimum. Dionysus caring so much I do not like, but you can sort of justify it because a godly war would result in world destruction. If their is a season 2, it will be very disappointing if Dionysus cares because he hates the camp as its his punishment. As much as I like Mantzoukas, Robert Downey Jr in a fat suit and prosthetics would have been absolutely perfect as Dionysus, he would have nailed the personality and still would have been funny at the same time. Wish the show had a higher budget!
I feel like Ares should’ve told Percy that Sally was alive instead of Grover, like he did in the books. Would’ve made Sally’s death a bit more unknown and thrown another curveball on Percy’s quest. Just my 2 cents
Also, in the books Percy originally had the idea that Sally was in the Underworld and wanted to go there to search for her. He thought of it as Chiron showed him around camp.
@@luminescentlily1872yes, in the books Percy had basically the same thought process as Orpheus - go to the underworld and bargain for his mother’s life.
The scene where he gets claimed I got pretty excited and shouted, “Kneel, bitch! Kneel!” to no one in particular, and no one knelt despite how it is in the book.
I always thought the kneeling was a bit awkward ngl. After all, Poseidon does not hold a super special place on Olympus, he is powerful sure, but it is not like he has any more say than any other god or goddess really
No ones talking about it so I will cuz he deserves his flowers for rocking a performance that not many ADULT actors could pull off: Walker's portrayal of Percy for the first 80% of the first episode is downright freaking heart breaking. The hurt when he thinks Grover betrayed him, the way he buys into the stuff he was *literally* gaslit (albeit sometimes unintentionally by people who didnt know any better) into believing....like man, the whole "stop telling me I'm special"..."theres something wrong with my brain" dynamic/tone....like DUDE...i just wanted to give lil bro a hug and tell him that it's gonna alright😭😭😭😭...he literally brought a tear to my eye, made me so much more empathetic to both him and his mother than I ever was watching the movies or even reading the books for that matter. I don't think I've experienced a moment like that in a film/show since the "is this real?" scene from Legion.
For Me... Pros: Walker is AMAZING as Percy. His line delivery is fantastic and he genuinely made me laugh out loud a few times. He has that Percy sarcasm down perfectly. The relationship with him and his mother is great and I actually felt something when she died. I like that she went out of her way to protect him from the minotaur. I know my Mom would do the same thing for me in a moment like that. I think the look of the world and especially Camp Half Blood is fantastic, it looks exactly like how I pictured it while reading. And for the most part the stunts and VFX all look great for a series. Cons: The pacing is really off. I felt like episode 1 rushed through SO much important establishing moments. The story was moving a mile a minute and I feel like non book readers are gonna get whiplash. The encounter with Dodds was like 30 seconds long, she wasn't established at all prior to that scene, and neither was Mr. Brunner. He gives Percy the pen in such a random way and the action really lacked intensity for me. Gabe isn't nearly enough of an asshole and having Sally stand up to him immediately removes so much development for her going forward. I don't see him abusing her whatsoever. He was mildly annoying but nothing at all like the book. I kinda wish Percy freaked out a little more at all the crazy shit happening around him and how insane this new life is. The capture the flag scene doesn't show Percy getting strength from the water, it just heals him. He's supposed to be a terrible fighter until he gets wet. I wish the Big Three were fleshed out more and why Percy being alive is such a big deal. Also there was a lack of Annabeth. She's supposed to spend more time with Percy prior to capture the flag and for what we got so far, it just didn't impress me. They made her so stoic and boring.
I 100% agree with all of this. I especially want to see more episodes to decide how I feel about Annabeth. More than anything I want her character's essence to be preserved and well adapted. That being said, I felt like the line delivery was stiff and unnatural. I remember Annabeth being well-spoken and, despite trying to hide it, excited that percy was there and incredibly hopeful. The "you drool when you sleep" scene was a bit of a jump scare. I can't exactly describe what felt wrong, I think it needed to sound more inquisitive and grossed out mixed with Annabeth's natural bluntness. I also think at this point, although Annabeth is calculative, she had a lot of faith in the gods and their plans (something that fades with time). Because of this, I found her manufacturing Percy's claim to be forced and unnatural for her character at this point in the series. I feel similarly about Grover in places as well, though I am more curious to see what they do with him. As much as I love him, I don't have an especially vivid interpretation of his character from the books so for me he is more malleable than Annabeth. 🤷♀️ Walker just needs more opportunity for signature Percy sass, which we know is coming. Walker hasn't done a lot of dramatic work and has seemed to stay more on the side of comedy (for obvious reasons) though he is a talented actor. These were just my initial interpretations 🤷♀️. Mostly I think with more episodes, we will hopefully be able to see the whole cast settle into the story and become natural fixtures within it.
it’s been around 4 years since i picked up the first pjo book and i never imagined me 4 years later to be so happy about my favourite book series finally having its own tv show 😭😭 the show was amazing, the cast was perfect, everything about it was so well done and i’m so excited to see the other episodes!
I’m guessing they might be making it so that you see Percy and Grover’s friendship develop onscreen compared to the preestablised bond in the books seeing that they basically cut off the entire school year and you can’t see the inside of Percy’s head.
Personally, I did not care for Gorver in the books as much as everyone else did and I'm really happy with show Grover (because of the difference, maybe). His character makes sense when you realize that the book covered a lot of time where he had to lie to Percy to keep him safe. They just switched one bad-friend-character-trait with another one to speed up the story. Also, I hope they fit in a scene with the Cloven Council by the finale because the set looked awesome. I think when he "talks" to Sally with the blue jellybean explains his obsession with finding Poseidon. From his perspective, his mother died and he blames his father for it, he wants him to answer for her death. Which also supplments how deep they made their relationship in the show compared to the book. The way Leah Jeffries just holds herself, and the look in her eyes, shows that she's the kind of person who's constantly thinking. It made complete sense that she figured out Percy's parentage. I cared more about Annabeth's grey eyes than her blonde hair but I love everything about Leah. I feel Gabe's behavious was much milder than in the books and I just figured they wanted to make it more kid-friendly, that could also explain the car accident being cut out. I bet Olivia's going to be on the HP reboot as well. Hit the trinity.
I love how the end credits look like a New York 1920s art deco mural, not only it looks gorgeous but art deco had a lot of divine and statuesque pictures, almost like it was the year the gods moved to USA and thus subconsciously inspired mortal artists to make New York look more “godly”.
About Annabeth defeating the “dumb blonde” stereotype (as it was impactful at the time), I think Leah’s Annabeth also defeats every negative stereotype put on black girls both in media and in real life
Overall, the episodes were awesome. There were a few things that didn’t make sense. The constant cuts to black was weird to me. The fade to white after Mrs. Dodds crumbles was confusing to me because the next moment, Percy is laying on the ground surrounded by students. What just happened? Mr. D does not act the the way he does in the books. He hates demigods and couldn’t care less if they lived or died. I was also confused why Annabeth pushed Percy into the water. I don’t remember that in the book. I also thought Percy only wins the fight with Clarisse after he gets pushed into the water.
The show started well. I especially loved the graphics. I totally agree with you on a lot of things. Mr D should not care if anyone goes on a quest. He doesn't even want to be the director. He leaves everything to Chiron. He shouldn't care if Grover talks to Percy about his mom. In the fight against Clarrise, there's no way Percy should be that good without training, besting 3 Ares kids. They are children of the God of war and have had training/more time in camp. And he didn't even touch the water before we see the change in how good he is. So there isn't going to be a journey of how Percy's swordplay gets better and better, cause he was born with it. Now if you show/tell me an Ares kid was born knowing how to fight, not with a weapon though, I would believe you. That's the one quality they should have. Percy's natural ability should have been his strength in water/healing. I did love the part where Annabeth pushed him into the water though. It showed how smart she was. Like she already knew, even before Chiron or anyone else. I wish this series followed the movie adaptation and used a click pen instead of a cap pen.
To answer a few of your questions: The cuts to black are for ads. Disney+ comes with 2 subscription options: cheaper w ads, or more expensive w/o ads, and so the fade to black was for playing ads for those who didn’t pay for premium. Fade to white I saw it as the mist overwriting memories. While I agree that Mr. D is a little different, in the books he does care to an extent. After all his kids are at camp, and he’s helped Percy multiple times in TTC and TLO. Also I’m pretty sure Annabeth pushed him into the water because she suspected he was a son of Poseidon after the bathroom incident, at least that’s how I saw it. And it ties into the “she’s 6 steps ahead of everyone” scene
Mr. D never expressed concern about Percy living or not, he showed his concern with the conflict between Zeus and Poseidon and the impact that it'd cause on Olympus and the rest of the world.
I hated how they portrayed Gabe in the show because they made him seem like just a bad annoying guy when in the book he was genuinely abusive so the show just took that element away from the plot. I also don't like that they made Sally stand up to him because in the books she dealt with him to cover Percy's scent from the monsters and it showed how strong she really was to deal with him for that long.
Imo they are almost making Gabe a likeable character. I found him to be more funny than anything else, kind of the same feeling I get for Mr. D. I could totally see them (just from the first episode) giving Gabe a redemption arc which kinda takes away from Sally's character.
yeah, this gabe i don’t want dead like book gabe, he seems more clueless than sinister. I wonder if they’ll still keep the physical abuse element? even if they don’t, though, i disagree that that would take away from sally’s character. i don’t think trauma defines her; she’s an incredible mother whether or not she was hit, y’know?
Gabe more like a simp, not a hateful character. His action justified his fate at the end of the lightning thief. Maybe Disney thought that it was a bit dark for a loving mother like Sally to actually kill someone so maybe they will change that
Of all the reviews I have seen of Percy Jackson series, this was the best by far. I loved your review and how you actually touched the problems than questioning the story. Some TH-camrs literally tried to make fun of the book and then said that this series was the worst. I am happy as a fellow reader that this review sticks with the story.
I watched the first two episodes and I really enjoyed them, but I do have a few nitpicks. I was not a fan of the way the show did the Mrs. Dodds scene, it was very underwhelming in the show. I also was a little disappointed at the lack of screentime that Annabeth had, I wished that she had been the one to show Percy around Camp Half-blood in the show like she did in the book. Another thing I didn’t like was the way Gabe was portrayed, it felt that like he was more comedic, when he should’ve been more menacing. Overall I did really enjoy the first two episodes and I’m really excited for the rest of the season.
I can see why they gave this part of the story to Luke, as this gives the audience time to develop affection for the character since once the mission begins we won't see him until the end of the season.
@@Truck-kun11yeah, I totally understand that. I really loved the Luke scenes and I definitely understand why they gave him the scene that annabeth has in the book, but I just wish that annabeth had gotten more screen time.
I actually loved Aryan as Grover and his portrayal. I did find Grover's “betrayal” at the start off putting, but think his characterisation in the show makes sense for the visual medium and the character archetypes. So I don't mind.
I wish they could show us things instead of telling us. I would have like to seen the gods making the deal to not have more kids and just more scene were they show and not tell.
And how much runtime do you think those scenes would cost? Not just runtime but also budget. Get all the gods together for a flashback scene? How many lines would it take to get across why they were making that deal in the first place? Not everything can make sense as show instead of tell. That's why I prefer the saying "show don't just tell"
I was unhappy when I saw the casting for Annabeth. She specifically says in Mark of Athena that she was tired of being blonde and wished she had a different hair color so that people couldn’t perceive her as dumb. But the actress plays the part well. I personally love Clarisse’s character and how she is depicted. A bad girl, but a total badass.
Around 99% of the time, we have the same opinions but this time we are so different Morgan! 😂 I love Aryan and what they are doing with Grover’s character. Throughout the whole show he makes me laugh, his comedic timing and line deliver is awesome. Walker I feel is missing the sassy and wittiness of Percy but for the serious scenes, he does a good job and I can see why they casted him. As for Leah, she’s the one for me that is falling short. When Rick said she was the best Annabeth I expected her acting skills to be amazing but every time she is onscreen she shows almost no emotion. If she’s angry, frustrated, scared, annoyed, there’s nothing there. I don’t think she’s a bad actress and she’s also very young but when you put her next to Walker and Aryan, her acting skills stands out a lot. But I love her chemistry with Walker. Leah has a softness in her that Annabeth also has especially for Percy, I’m guessing that’s how she landed the role. But I do agree with the fade outs, hate them.
I kinda wish that they braided a bit of blonde into Annabeths hair. It wouldn't do anything story-wise, because it's obvious it's not her natural hair colour, but visually I think it would've been nice. Also, as a Christian, that part were Percy says 'God? Like, Jesus?' Is absolutely hilarious! Love the show so for, can't wait for the next episode to drop!
I think the actress would look so cute with little blonde highlights. I love that she is rocking a protective style too, because too many Black actresses have had their hair destroyed by on-set stylists.
I Loved both episodes. Honestly, I kinda thought it was a little rushed that Percy got claimed by Poseidon and given his quest all in the 2nd episode of the series. Mainly because it took a good few chapters of the novel for it to get that far. But I still thought it was good 👍
I just wished they hadn’t changed how he got claimed like with the hellhound that was one of my main beefs with the movie is the messed up how he was claimed
I was fine with it being in the 2nd episode, plus I thought it was way better than in the movie. (They just flat out said it instead of having a big shocking reveal. Which was pretty awful in my opinion cause it hurt the parallel between him and Luke both being frustrated with the way the Olympian’s treat their own children.)
@@Lupin788 Truly I think the fault lies in the 8 episode model. With 10 they could have dedicated more to Yancy and the camp before the quest actually comes into play... but alas
I have a couple of thoughts! 1) After Percy witnesses his mother’s alleged killing, he is devastated. This is a child who is now angry and heartbroken about losing the only parent that loved him unconditionally and accepted him without a single question. I took it as a grieving child who wants answers from an absentee father who happens to a be a god. When he refused to take that quest from Mr. D, his anger has reached a peak. His revulsion of obeying his father’s will makes sense because he is “the son of Sally Jackson.” In that temporary moment, he rejected his father. Realistically, he does have that right. He’s reminding everyone that his mother is the one who raised him, who took care of him, made sure that he was safe and protected. His dad only appearing in his only when it’s convenient? Naw, that wouldn’t sit right with anyone. I also took this as mirroring Luke. Most of this episode, Percy is with Luke. He’s there to guide the young and impressionable kid. He and his friend making these subtle cracks about how the gods enjoy the smell of begging, how Luke’s own dad was never around lay the groundwork of Luke’s direct influence, because book Lucas wants Percy to join HIS cause against the gods who use the demigods for their own purpose and amusement. 2) Okay, so I actually disagree with nearly everything you said about Grover. I think Aryan Simhadri is bringing out another side to Grover. In the books, Grover can sense people’s thoughts and emotions, which show Grover does too. But, in subtle ways. Yes, Grover and Percy are best friends, but at the end of the day, Grover is his protector. If you think about it, Percy wasn’t unprotected in the moments before the Yancy truck came to pick him up. Chiron was there in that moment to serve as a protective shield as well. Grover throwing Percy under the bus show nuance and depth between their friendship. In the books, Grover has always been meek and mindful of respecting the gods. Which, he does, in the initial intro of Percy and Dionysus. Moreover, Grover spent an entire year being friend with Percy, observing him, interacting with him, and learning how Percy is. As you said, Grover knows this world and how the gods operate. However, the gods don’t know Percy. So, Grover disobeying Mr. D’s direct order of not telling Percy is to serve as a reminder of, “Hey, I know Percy very well and I know how to motivate him to accept the quest.” Grover understood that Percy is angry at Poseidon but loves his mother dearly. Percy’s loyalty is to his mother, not the father who has never been there for him. He also met and has gotten to know Sally as well. Disobeying a god to be truthful to Percy is in line with what Sally made him promise: “Protect my son and keep him from harm. Don’t let anyone even look at him wrong or do him wrong.” He’s honouring Sally in that moment. When Grover honours Sally in defiance of the gods, he is telling others that he will not be pushed around. His first obligation is to protect and be there for Percy. He’ll do whatever it takes to do so.
I actually don't like the change they made with Percy's mom. She would subtly stand up to Gabe like always getting blue candy to prove him wrong and in the book he's emotionally and physically abusive so it makes sense she wouldn't be outright argumentative with him. Plus, the fact that she thought taking his abuse was worth it to protect Percy from monsters (which I am glad that was quickly resolved in the books so we didn't have to read multiple books of his mom being abused) shows the type of mother she is. I just like the more subtle strength she had in the book as a mortal among monsters and gods.
I totally agree. Gabe seems annoying and pathetic but not overtly threatening and Percy and his mom don’t seem afraid of him like they did in the books, which I think really changes the feel of his home and childhood. I also don’t know how they are going to justify murdering him at the end. I wonder if they had to tone it down to keep it PG or something like that?
I must say i was disappointed at first seeing the actor of annabeth because it felt like „yeah we need more minirities in the cast“. But she does plays annabeth really well and now i am happy with it
you've got a new subscriber. love your presentation, straight to the point, no bullshit. Great coverage Easter eggs and insight. Will be following all updates after each episode. amazing work
I will say the CGI for Chiron is also a little uncanny valley. I'll actually give it to the movie on this one, primarily because they had Chiron in armor in the movie and it fit the coat of his horse half. In the Disney+ adaptation it doesn't match his waistcoat and it just made the actor look like he was standing on a box all the time.
I think grover is really good actually. I feel like the character is the same/similar but the circumstances are a bit different. In the books he didn't snitch on Percy, but there were nothing to snitch, he did however gaslight him for months and told him it was for the best that Percy got kicked out
I feel bad i didn't notice rick my first watch so yeah I'm definitely going to be paying close attention to that lol As for grover i think most of the issues I've noticed and you noticed stem from him being told to keep his mouth shut and him knowing he shouldn't and him putting his mission above his friendship... Which i think stems from what happened with Thalia... Idk i think we're going to see him being more honest with percy as the episodes drop. Could even have a redemption when facing off with hades or ares
I just finished the episode and before I even watch this I want to say the kid playing Percy literally made me cry during the burnt offering seen. I don't mind a single minor change they made because it really works within the narrative. All of the child actors have done a really good job so far. Extra shout out to Clarice for being metal af. Also the fight choreography was really well done. I cannot wait for the rest of the season.
I love the way they designed camp half blood and majority of the actors are pretty good. The only problem I have is that I wish the episodes were longer, as the pacing is really fast.
As someone who never read the books I loved these first two episodes, and your breakdown/review here was very, very helpful to understand even deeper! Thank you so much, you completely earned my subscription! I plan to read the books, but I almost wanna wait until the show is over because I think this would be more fun not to know what’s coming! When I was watching the blackness between scenes, I actually took that is maybe Disney+ and starting perfect commercial spots for the people on the ad tier plan, but maybe I was overthinking it maybe it is about the chapters simulating like you said.
Dionysus is absolutely perfect already. He is exactly how I envisioned him Edit: I love Eddy even in only one scene, I hope he doesn’t get stoned. I think the scene with Sally in the rain is a way to establish the potted garden outside the apartment and foreshadow Percy’s eventual stranding on Ogygia with Calypso during the fourth book.
I actually like Grover disobeying Chiron and Mr. D. He knows it's the only way Percy would ever go to the Underworld and he's also being loyal to percy.
From three main characters only percy feels like percy for me. Annabeth isn't just looking like anabeth. And even luke is like some strange weird guy for me. Isn't he supposed to have sandy hair? Idk.

I know you don’t have to do it
But can you please do a video on what if they made a third Percy Jackson movie? I saw the second Airbender movie you made and it was funny. For example, Zoë could be blonde and has light skin, compared to darker hair and olive skin in the books. And there can also be a monster from the fourth book into the third movie, like Kampe or a sphinx.
@marshalmarrs3269 what do you mean?
when adapting a book it takes me out of it if the charects dont look like they are described
Mr. D is one of my favorite characters, and having him immediately take advantage of Percy's confusion to try to get a drink was perfect.
Agreed😂😂
It’s amazing bc it wasn’t in the book but is COMPLETELY in character.
Fr and I really wish they added the part where Percy sees people dying and going insane in Mr D's eyes. It really highlights how even though he acts stupid he's a GOD. It's a minor detail but I really wish they added it

Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysis is perfect casting I can’t lie. His line delivery and appearance are exactly how I pictured him in the book.
Mantzouka imo is usually a standout in any show he gets casted in. B99, Invincible, the Good place, twisted metal and now PJ series
we simply cannot escape derek
@@noobmasterruben5167He always made me laugh every scene in B99😂
The casting in the show is great, but Mr. D in the book is unequivocally Danny DeVito

I watched that and it gave me villain arch vibes
Also it’s such a good set up for how Percy constantly stands up to the gods and holds them to account. I also love how they’re making him and Luke closer so that the sense of betrayal sinks in deeper.
@@ot7biasedmashupsalso the music was a little villain-y. Probably to set up everything that has been said before. Really good scene
It also made Percy similar to Luke and shown what Percy could've been
yea this change was also my personal favorite. it makes much more sense for a kid his age to be resentful of his father. not only was he just… not there for the first 12 years of his life but who his father is was the reason why his mother was seemingly killed (in percy’s eyes before he finds out that she’s alive) and why he was at camp. it makes percy feel much more authentic as a character since this is how a real person would likely react to the situation. and i also like to think that it’s drawing parallels to percy and luke so that they can be later highlighted by their choices
agree!! also love what they did with medusa, it humanizes the monsters and sheds light on what bad people the gods can be
i agree!!! it’s more realistic for him to resent Poseidon because he ended up with gabe as his step dad
The only problem with that logic is the fact that they made Gabe actually tolerable and kind of even a decent person but that might just be the actor being too nice@@lucyidek
Personally for me I would not even call this a change I think they're going into it a bit more than the book did but it was actually a thing that was established before he knew
He resented his dad for not having the guts to marry his mom and for leaving them so they had to deal with Gabe, event in the second book when he knows who his father is he's dealing with the irritation and feeling abandoned and that his dad doesn't really pay attention to him
I don’t think the child actor did a bad job with Grover it’s just how he’s written on the show. Grover is supposed to be this unconfident kinda shy character
Very true
I'm waiting for Aryan to kill it as Grover in these coming episodes.
The chemistry he has with Walker and Leah off screen makes me glad to see their bond and his character shine more down the line.
Them off screen is hilarious
Yeah in the books also he is very blustery and clumsy-likeable and he never betrays him
I found him amazing, he stood out to me in the first episode. He played Grover as a sweet, lovable character that he is
Sally’s “not everyone who looks like a monster is really a monster,” is pretty decent foreshadowing for this show’s iteration of Grover, in my opinion. It’s revealed that Grover snitched to get Percy away from school and to safety, and he’s not the monster of a friend that Percy thinks he is. Even his bodily reveal to Percy - goat legs, horns, not exactly friendly - fits this, as he’s not a monster, but a satyr.
I thought it was a foreshadow on Medusa on how she was perceived as a monster and her being the victim of unjust Athena
@@massetozacarias5693actually it’s a foreshadowing for ____ Castellan
Yeah cause in the books Percy hated how the gods never represented their children
“You are the son of Poseidon!”
“I am the son of Sally Jackson!”
“… Who’s Sally Jackson?!”
This show has the drama and humor down pat.
It’s more real. The whole Percy not caring in the books always felt a little weird.
Once the quest begins you'll get your Grover.

the oracle of delphi is also gone it has a great impact to the story
@@Smartypants99Oracle of Delphi is very likely appearing in the next episode to give the prophecy, since the quest is going to start.
If I remember right right before they go on quest there’s another scene with the elders that’s about the seeker thing. I didn’t think it was right after they got there but right before they leave. I might be wrong tho
@@Smartypants99she is in the next episode
It was kinda wierd how Percy was so skilled with a sword cause we never see him get any training with it.
There was one small scene in the books when while training Percy pours a bottle of water over his head and describes feeling a rush of energy before proceeding to disarm Luke. A lot of people overlook that part which is really disappointing
this is defintly not the only scene removed, i belive its for the lack of time given by disney, this scene in perticual also hurt the ongoing in-world logic so it might hurt more than others.. 100% agree
@@Karinkishi-mhehyeah Disney screwed them over each episode should have been at least an hour long
So, Rick did an interview breaking that scene down.
Yeah, ultimately I think I prefer that he snitched on him rather than him and Chiron gaslighting him and making him feel crazy for actual MONTHS
Gets clear resentment, which is extremely common in children with single parents.
Maybe I'm just looking into this too much
Yes! This totally makes sense thank you
I like it
But there is no prophecy he should've heard it already they already told him his quest and he accepted they butchered that entire portion of the story and completely left out the oracle so far.
@@caseyl4699she’s in the next episode
@@caseyl4699 or it’s (as I’m hoping it is) part of the next episode- flashbacks or right at the beginning
Gonna be honest, Grover betraying percy makes me rather mad at Chiron more than Grover, like that was a horrible thing to make Grover do
I think they just couldn't have more time at yancy academy yk, and pretty sure in the books grover was lying to percy the rest of the year, him betraying is slightly too extreme but Isn't completely inacurate to the situation in the books
Yeah, and honestly it doesn't seem out of character for Grover to listen
Same, god I felt so bad for Grover when he had to do it. Kinda messed up ngl.
He was protecting him bro not a betrayal
I am still excited to see more of her strategic abilities show in the series though, like we did with these changes in ep 2 so far
same
My take on the fade-to-black transitions was they structured it for possible commercial breaks, either for broadcast or ad-supported streaming.
That take makes a lot of sense! I’m pretty sure the first two episodes were released on Hulu as well, which is definitely ad-supported
Same, Dior did such a good job as Clarisse. She gave me chills when she screamed after the spear was broken.
Dior is 16 creep
The only thing I can say about Clarisse is she's not really supposed to be hot. She's described more like a warrior, strong, mean and brutal. And even in one of the books she's described to be man like. I definitely like this version so far and can see her doing great in later episodes. But I always pictured her more like a jock bully not a hot school bully.
Eh. She felt like a really cliche bully just for sake of being mean. In the book, her rivalry with Percy has a little more nuance to it.
When she told him that he wasn't broken but that he was singular and her son was amazing Virginia kull is a wonderful actress
Honestly my favorite part of the show so far is how they showed Clarisse. They kept her as this tough kid that instantly felt like the person that you don’t want to mess with. Dior was the perfect casting choice, she did a great job as Clarisse
Definitely the best character so far
In my opinion Clarisse felt off and kinda annoying like some cheesy Disney bully over someone you don't want to mess
She was very good. She’s incredibly pretty, but when she played her all you saw was her fierce, feisty behaviour.
I don’t know, to me she didn’t feel intimidating. She dint feel like my favourite character from the books.
It kinda felt to me that she was just doing the stereotypical “I’m tough look at me” kind of thing. Just didn’t mesh with me.
@@awsomerobyn2603 yeah
In the show, it keeps cutting to the next thing which made it seem fast paced
Although I do think they’re going to elaborate more on the characters and explain more about the plot later on (like annabeth asking percy on the quest ‘why do you have blue food?’)
I had a similar thought because grover and Chiron were having a discussion about Percy right before he got expelled in the book
I suspect it’s to plant the seed of betrayal to take heat off of another character. Like Grover betrayed him so he will do it again later
I could not hold back my laughter when Mr. D “dropped the bomb of him being his father” it was hilarious to see Percy’s confusion.
În The games of Harry Potter Ron is just like how he îs în The books
My biggest problem with Annabeth in the series so far is that there is so little of her. She shows Percy around in the book, and I'd love to see that in the series, but I guess I'll have to survive with what I get
me too!
I reckon since they’ll set up the start of the quest next week we’ll see much more of her. For now they have to introduce all the characters
Same, Annabeth is my favourite character so I’m really hoping for more pf her
I think they chose to include Annabeth less because she is a major character during the quest so they pretty much have over 6 episodes to show. I think the first two episodes are to show the characters that don't really appear over the quest but are still important like Luke and Clarisse.
I think they did this to build Percys relationships with Luke and Chris so when the betrayal happens it's gonna hurt him more
For the beads thing… It was never mentioned in the books how many beads a lot of the campers had, and it makes sense that everyone would have somewhere between like 1-5 of them.
But apart from that, love the show so and can't wait for more!
ya
He’s ghey
This has been my line of thought so I'm glad I'm not the only one.
They're sitting in a crowd
yess, probably in the next one, cause they appear in a feature by disney+
I feel like they’ll either appear before or after the bus where the trio is attacked by the furies
Could also be the case they filmed it, but ended up on the cutting board, or will be a flashback later, who knows.
I'm sad details like the oracle weren't included bc I remember reading that scene in the books for the first time and it was genuinely chilling, percy was seriously freaked out, reminding us that he really has no idea what he's doing, he's a kid with barely any training, going on a highly dangerous quest
She’s in the next episode
The Oracle will be in the next episode. It's chill
EXACTLY!!
YESS. It honestly took me a little bit in the book series to like Grover as much as Annabeth and Percy and i think they've done a really good job in these two episodes of balancing him being shy and anxious with giving him more agency and scenes where he gets to shine
@@a.h.2615 yeah, just what I think
exactly omg
Yeah I really don’t understand this guys aversion to Grover here.
I agree although I think having every ares camper also with 5 was too much
Well, Clarisse was one of the campers that had the same amount of beeds as Annabeth & Luke because she was cannonically one of the longest staying campers in CHB
exactly, no where on the books does it state that luke and annabeth had been there the longest, just that it had been a long time. camp half blood has been around for decades at least. ofc there will be people with equal or more beads then them.
@@graceelwick6422 it was there in the american civil war...
I have one problem. ANNABETH DOSENT HAVE THE RING ON THE BEAD NECKLACE THAT SHE GOT FROM HER FATHER
Brunner was also literally right there watching Percy during the disciplinary meeting. AND he was there outside while Percy was waiting for his ride. I’m certain that he was watching to make sure no monsters came and picked him off.
The Percy Jackson books are finally getting the adaption they deserve ❤

I really enjoyed it, felt a bit fast paced in episode 1 but it was done very nicely. I also enjoyed the 3 kids, feel like they did a great job with the characters.
Yeah a bit too fast for me too. They should make it an hour long for each episode as that is where they can flesh out the character more than in the books or movies
I thought it was slow paced, but left a bunch of stuff out. I think the movie did a better job with the runtime than the 1st episode when covering the same material.
@@spence8507Really? Like excluding nancy and montauk?
I kinda find that Percy's reaction to his mom's "death" was way too mild. I have doubts. Anabeth is adorable though.
He was probably in shock and wasn’t able to express to much emotion. At least that’s how I saw it
To be fair, this is an issue in all of the PJO adaptations.
Her acting was really bad in my opinion. It could've been better. It felt like she was just reading off the script, there was no emotion whatsoever.
@@mariam-mr1qtwho annabeth? I think she was perfect. Really captured her wisdom and calculating look.
Sally was my highlight from ep1
I’m pretty happy with the first two episodes. Fingers crossed they will continue to get it right
Given Riordan is directly involved I have high hopes
Dude your looking at it wrong. The fact that Gabe would frame a Zach Wilson jersey is unbelievably fitting for his character🤣
@@caseyl4699 He's toned down like Gabe is, correct.
That had to be the most disappointing part of the episode. It’s supposed to be a huge deal
I waited too for the kneel part but they just show all the anxious and confused face😂
Can't have people kneeling to a white boy in 2023 lol@@TheMasterCaster
SAMEE
I always thought the kneeling was a bit awkward ngl. After all, Poseidon does not hold a super special place on Olympus, he is powerful sure, but it is not like he has any more say than any other god or goddess really
No ones talking about it so I will cuz he deserves his flowers for rocking a performance that not many ADULT actors could pull off:
Walker's portrayal of Percy for the first 80% of the first episode is downright freaking heart breaking.
Walker just needs more opportunity for signature Percy sass, which we know is coming. Walker hasn't done a lot of dramatic work and has seemed to stay more on the side of comedy (for obvious reasons) though he is a talented actor.
These were just my initial interpretations 🤷♀️. Mostly I think with more episodes, we will hopefully be able to see the whole cast settle into the story and become natural fixtures within it.
that's what im saying! the claiming was so underwhelming as well.
Finally! Someone with accuracy. I agree with all of it. Morgan should read this.
Yeah and Annabeth and Grover both had their characters seem way worse. Grover became a snitch and annabeth was just kind of annoying in episode 3
it’s been around 4 years since i picked up the first pjo book and i never imagined me 4 years later to be so happy about my favourite book series finally having its own tv show 😭😭 the show was amazing, the cast was perfect, everything about it was so well done and i’m so excited to see the other episodes!
I’m guessing they might be making it so that you see Percy and Grover’s friendship develop onscreen compared to the preestablised bond in the books seeing that they basically cut off the entire school year and you can’t see the inside of Percy’s head.
you’re the only percy jackson reviewer i needed to see.
One thing to take into account about the actor of Grover, is that the lines and blocking weren’t done by him, so it’s not his fault.
About Annabeth defeating the “dumb blonde” stereotype (as it was impactful at the time), I think Leah’s Annabeth also defeats every negative stereotype put on black girls both in media and in real life
A black person always has to mention skin colour in EVERYTHING it’s so overused and uninteresting at this point
@@ryansar2023ok cry abt it

@ryansar2023 and everyone using the "blonde stereotype" excuse to be racist is also overused soooo... 🤷🏾♀️
No one wants race swapped characters L
To answer a few of your questions:
The cuts to black are for ads.
Also my impression with the fountain was that the water pulled her in, not "magic" pushing her as it looks like here.
Someone said the cut to black is for the ads version of Disney+
I agree, can't picture this Gabe hitting Sally
Gabe more like a simp, not a hateful character. His action justified his fate at the end of the lightning thief. Maybe Disney thought that it was a bit dark for a loving mother like Sally to actually kill someone so maybe they will change that
True but her standing up to him so early also undermines that arc anyway
Still seems like he’s a pain to actually live with, I’m sure we’ll see him devolve with the apparent death of sally
@@jaydas8976 The rest of the series will be just her, Percy and Grover traveling around the country, so I'm sure she'll have a lot of screen time.
I agree with the Ms Dodds thing I really like her design especially her wings hears to hoping we will get more action if we see her again
@thezman9522Also showing him more really gives time to show the parallels between him and Percy.

@@jaydas8976I was on my couch and fell of laughing.
I was sad that when percy got claimed and chiron was saying a bunch of stuff about poseidon he didn't say "king of horses"
Me too
I kinda wish that they braided a bit of blonde into Annabeths hair.
I thought the same thing. Laughed so hard that I nearly missed the following dialogue.
But I still thought it was good 👍
I don't think it was rushed at all. There are 8 episodes so two episodes is already one-quarter of the story.
With 10 they could have dedicated more to Yancy and the camp before the quest actually comes into play... but alas
@@BrytteMwhen I saw 8 episodes, I thought they were going to be at least an hour long
I have a couple of thoughts!
Honestly I have been waiting to watch this breakdown. This breakdown really help me understand more.
That was the most amazing tv show premiere I’ve seen, I cannot wait for the next 6 episodes
I must say i was disappointed at first seeing the actor of annabeth because it felt like „yeah we need more minirities in the cast“. But she does plays annabeth really well and now i am happy with it
"Are you stalking me, Annabeth?"
"Yes."
you've got a new subscriber. love your presentation, straight to the point, no bullshit.
Eh, Disney has improved since young Jeff Bridges in ‘TRON: Legacy.’
Thank you, I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice the weirdness of Chiron
I think grover is really good actually. I feel like the character is the same/similar but the circumstances are a bit different. In the books he didn't snitch on Percy, but there were nothing to snitch, he did however gaslight him for months and told him it was for the best that Percy got kicked out
I feel bad i didn't notice rick my first watch so yeah I'm definitely going to be paying close attention to that lol
As for grover i think most of the issues I've noticed and you noticed stem from him being told to keep his mouth shut and him knowing he shouldn't and him putting his mission above his friendship...
I'm actually glad Percy wasn't some badass when confronted by Mrs. Dodds. At this point, he shouldn't even know that the "pen" is actually a sword.
He is exactly how I envisioned him
Edit: I love Eddy even in only one scene, I hope he doesn’t get stoned. I think the scene with Sally in the rain is a way to establish the potted garden outside the apartment and foreshadow Percy’s eventual stranding on Ogygia with Calypso during the fourth book.
I loved Annabeth. Leah is a perfect fit.
No she’s not
I actually like Grover disobeying Chiron and Mr. D. He knows it's the only way Percy would ever go to the Underworld and he's also being loyal to percy.
I saw the episodes and was anticipated for your thoughts, thank you Movieflame
From three main characters only percy feels like percy for me. Annabeth isn't just looking like anabeth. And even luke is like some strange weird guy for me. Isn't he supposed to have sandy hair? Idk.
The cuts to black really feel like they’re there for ads or commercials almost like watching a cable tv show on Netflix
It's because they are, Disney Plus has a tier that has commercials.
