This was a great choice for the 2nd song by Pentatonix! Thank you for suggesting it @judithL3100, @martinhafner2201, @johnvasi, @jandale9486, @margretrosenberg420, @louellamoyer5578, and @occamsrazor5376. ❤❤❤ It allowed me to "meet" Matt and hear more of what Scott can do. Not to mention how fun the arrangement is!
Thank you sooo much for this. You are so appreciated. O it is Kirstwn ( Kirsie for short version and rhymes with thirsty) o they are sooo excellent. If ever I come in to monet.(I doubt) I will definitely go to the USA and watch all their shows, won't even spend money on sight seeing. From a absolute Pentaholic. You are really appreciated. Greetings from South Africa
A really great song for Matt is "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." It's from about five years ago, so he doesn't show off his current incredible range in it, but he's *the* soloist and does a delightful job. They all look like they had a lot of fun making that one, and it's the right time of year for it.
@daleenengelbrecht4861 Thank you so much! Also thank you for helping me pronounce Kirstie correctly rather than being angry for my (repeated) mispronunciation of her name. Someone mentioned I could go to Italy for their concert if they have one and here I am wondering if I could afford the tickets in Belgrade. 🤣 I picked less money with less stress and I still get to hear great sound online. 😉 Groete aan Suid-Afrika! ❤❤❤
Ah, but I have that one on my list from Nov. 9th in your name. 😉 I know none of us can remember what we wrote to whom, so I write all suggestions down. PTX have so many Christmas songs and I managed to run into one they covered. An English traditional Christmas carol that I like in general and wanted to hear PTX's take on it. Since I will have 4 weeks for Christmas songs (2 weeks before Dec. 25th and another 2 weeks before Serbian Orthodox Christmas on Jan 7th) I'm likely to include another one by Pentatonix. Not sure which one yet. ❤
So glad you enjoyed it. Could tell by your facial expressions. . I don’t comment often but thought your Hallelujah reaction showed an understanding of music/voice that most reactors don’t have. Also love the S & G original and yes the Disturbed cover is amazing and causes goosebumps down my arms and back. To hear lead David skillfully take his wonderfully trained voice ******* you’ll know. Thanks for your Ptx reactions I enjoy both Avi and Matt. And look forward to more
They call them “bell tones” so you got it right! So many more for you…..Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, I Just Called To Say I Love You, Mad World, O Holy Night, Daft Punk (medley) To see Kevin play his cello, while beatboxing, Say Something, Shallow, live version of Kiss From A Rose And it’s Kirstie (rhymes with ‘thirsty’) They all have side solo projects but try listening to Scott’s original Mars (live - choir version)
@@AleksReacts ,in straight musical terms they are arpeggio'd notes and a speciality of Pentatonix. They seem to very often find ways to sprinkle them into their songs. Also, I second judith's list of suggestions.
Thank you for both for clarifying "bell tones". I think I'll stick to the laymen terms on this one. Much easier to remember. All suggestions noted, though I already had Imagine and O Holy Night suggested by Judith about 10 days ago. Yes, I do write them all down (for now, while it's still possible). 😊
I rarely write a comment on any of the dozens of people reacting to songs, but I am compelled to say you are certainly among the best reactors I have ever seen. And you have chosen the right artists to cut your teeth on. Take the time to really examine more of their work. Not only will you enjoy it, but it will boost your views. I think you are wonderful.
@jeffgoldman1479 Thank you so much for such lovely compliments. I do try to focus and not fake my reactions - that's pretty much it. After Hallelujah it was pretty clear these guys are REALLY GOOD and the most interesting part about them are the new arrangements for their covers. Partly, I'm actually lucky. Without the people who very quickly found me with 0 promotions or advertising and continued to listen to my chitchat, I'd have never heard of most of the artists I reacted to. @xerezjg52 is one of those people that I should be calling gems. We've all heard music we've never heard before, as many commenters are open to new stuff, like I am.
There is a live version recently released of Hallelujah with Matt singing! He will amaze you, but also I love everything Avi sings, especially his solo music. Matt is so charismatic and kind and he’s such a good fit with PTX. I’m glad we had Avi, but he’s where he belongs and so is Matt!
Ah, a true believer in people's own will. Two songs in, I'll say I'm leaning towards Avi's voice a bit more, but not sure yet. Don't really want to compare them as much as hear them... As they both are really good. ❤
I'll be looking forward to more PTX reactions from you; they individually will keep earning your appreciation, but I agree, the magic is in what they acheive together.
Thank you kindly! They seem like a group that has a lot more to show in each song, both individually and together. No wonder they are so popular. It's already apparent it is well deserved.
Enjoyed your reaction. You are very observant. Yes, this version is more hopeful. We Pentatonic also have problems differentiating between Mitch n Kirstie sometimes. They met when they were 8 years old doing musical theater. Mitch met Scott when they were 10. So, they have had years singing together especially when they went to the same high school at 14.
Thank you so much! Believe it or not, and I'm sure you do with all the Pentaholics in the comments, I got the whole story by now. 🥰 Then again, someone else might not AND I will forget half of it because I'm gettin' old, so it's good you shared "how it all began" ❤❤❤
Aleks, you're not too old that you didn't take every comment made to heart. Rarely have I seen a reactor already know all their names - even the one you've never seen - after just one song, so kudos to you!
Thank you kindly. I do try to be respectful to everyone before anything else. I am very glad that approach seems to attract just the best people on the Internet, so it is very much worth the effort. 🥰
Aleks, I love you! I have watched hundreds of people become aware of PTX. So few have truly experienced them. I could kiss you for not say "I love the harmonies" over and over. Since they are acapella, the harmonies are a given. Their talent and arrangements are what you see and that's very admirable. So cool that you know their names already.
Thank you so much, especially since your handle says a lot! Such a wonderful compliment! ❤❤❤ Truth be told, I do love their harmonies and it's hard to escape from saying that. 😂 They are individuals in my mind who create wonderful music as a group. It wouldn't work if they did each have an outstanding talent. Otherwise, all a cappella groups would be as popular, wouldn't they? In the case of PTX I think one of the greatest talents is coming up with innovative and lively arrangements that showcase each of them and yet allows them to create the harmonies (see, can't escape it). 😂The comments helped with the names, but as you may have noticed, I'm still working on pronouncing Kirstie properly. 😉
Hey Aleks, I really enjoyed your reaction and I also love Pentatonix. I also love that song very much because of the deep meaning of the lyrics and I think you might also appreciate the cover version from Disturbed and honestly I’d love to see you react to this. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
Thank you so much, Alain! After hearing general opinions on the 3 versions (original, PTX and Disturbed), I think I have to hear the Disturbed version relatively soon. Greetings to Canada! ❤❤❤
Just came across your reaction, because I really appreciate thoughtful reactions of songs and groups I love! I had the original Simon & Garfunkel 1964 album with this song. Loved them and love Pentatonix, but my absolute favorite is the one that Paul Simon appreciated most was Disturbed’s version released in 2015 in their official video of the song! It’s viewed as the definitive version of Paul’s warning and the reality of his message not being heeded. The lead singer of Disturbed is David Draiman. Incredible, one of a kind voice…originally a trained Jewish Cantor in his youth. This official video has been viewed over a billion times.
Thank you so much, Sue! I'm glad you found me and you are more than welcome to the channel. I went to your channel to check your name, so I can refer to you politely and ran into Marcelito videos. So more than one common interest, I see. 😊 Now, you're not the only one mentioning Disturbed, so that reaction needs to happen. It came with lots of different views and I simply have to add mine to it as well. I do hope we'll have some fun listening to music together. Thank you agian! ❤❤❤
Very good! Following for more Pentatonix reactions. I have been to Serbia! For our 30th wedding anniversary, we took a river boat cruise across Europe. In Serbia, we toured the opera house in Belgrade and also saw the red rocks.
I think you mean "singing in the Round"? Would love for you to react to "White Winter Hymnal", "Come Along", "The Prayer", & for a Christmas song...."Oh, Come All Ye Faithful". You'll have SO MANY Christmas songs to choose from. Each year they have a special Christmas tour where they do all their Christmas songs. Scott sings a terrific duet with a Broadway actress named Shoshanna Bean. It's a song she wrote called, "All To Me". A quick observation. You look so much like Anne Bancroft. Beautiful.
Yes, thank you! That was exactly what I meant! Thank you also for the lovely compliment! You're the second or even third person to mention Anne Bancroft. It might be the mannerisms more than the look, but it's a great compliment to any woman especially with no make-up. 😉❤❤❤ You're very interesting. You came up with some choices no one mentioned so far. All jotted down, but I can honestly tell you there is no way I'm going to cover all PTX Christmas songs, as there are other artists to think of and other fans as well, but I do have 2 weeks extra (2 for Dec. 25th and 2 more until Orthodox Christmas Jan 7th), so more options...
Please do react to “Come Along,” and to hear how great they are in a live concert try Popspring 2016, which features 3 of their original songs and a stellar performance of one of their “evolution of” medleys - Michael Jackson. I’ve seen them live in concert and this performance knocks me out every time because it includes so many of their originals.
I've never heard of Come Along, so we're safe there, but I am soooo not a fan of Michael Jackson (except for Thriller). Maybe they'll change my mind about his songs, if not about him. 🥰
Nice pick for a follow-up, Alex 🙂 This is among my favorites by them. And you got to hear Scott's voice better as well. He was featured in a duet with Angelina Jordan very recently, on her concert. The sang All Of Me. I HAD to put in some advertisement you know🤣 I appreciate how polite you are in your reactions. Class act👍👍👍 Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
Thank you, Sharkster! Already advertised by @johnvasi and @patrickwilliams8106, but your vote is added. 😉 As someone said before, like attracts like, so it makes sense that we get each other - similar upbringing in respect and politeness, methinks. Just check the comments, there are many class acts around here. Thank you for being one. Love to you and Norway, dear Sharky! ❤❤❤
The mnemonic is "Kirsty rhymes with thirsty." I think you'll be very impressed with their cover of "The Dance of the Sugarplum Faeries" from the Nutcracker Suite.
Thank you and thanks for not bashing me for mispronouncing Kirstie, but helping me instead. Another vote for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy jotted down. 😊
Avi is a prodigy, simply a one of a kind voice. Because he can be so dominating, he is better served as a stand alone act. He honestly really is that good. I love, love, LOVE Matt with Pentatonix. You will continue to see the more you react to them, how much more together they are as a group. The current version of PTX is the best they’ve ever been in literally all aspects.
I've heard both opinions - no good without Avi or great with Matt. Heard both singers and I am leaning a bit more toward Avi's voice color, but I think the group works well with both. Guess I'll keep going and simply enjoy what each has to offer. ❤ One of the reasons they are better now might simply be growing as a group or maybe a better personality fit. Easy does it, so I'll go easy. 🥰 Thank you!
@ A lot of people were extremely disappointed that Avi left, and I certainly understand that. In the end though, it ended up being the best move for both himself AND PTX. Matt brought something to this group that they did not even know they needed. Warmth, soul, Energy and FUN. You’ll see what I mean soon enough. Enjoy the ride 🙂
Well done! Few reactors get their names so quickly! That wave of music you were talking about is Pentatonix's "Wall of Sound." I believe Mitch's performance in "Amazing Grace" is his best in his lower register. Can't wait to see you react to more PTX! ❤
Thank you! It's my understanding that few reactors read ALL the comments. 🤣 I could not help but learn them all. Not my fault really. 😂 It was fun to hear Mitch's very high tones in Hallelujah and then very normal voice here. I liked both, they just keep up the fun by making changes all the time. That being said, there will surely be more. I do not often give up on an artist I really love. ❤❤❤
Mitch's lower register in Amazing Grace is outstanding, but one song where he really shows off his low end (and a much lower part of it!) is in their cover of "Take on Me" (by A-ha). It took me listening to it more than a couple of times to realize that it actually was Mitch, and not Scott taking over the lead vocal for the lower part. His range is incredible.
@bill.godwin-austen I love the way Mitch seems to cover almost his entire range in Take On Me within just a phrase or two! But there's a richness to his tone in Amazing Grace that resonates strongly with me. They offer so much to everyone, they are all so simply amazing!!!
@bill.godwin-austen I had no idea they even covered Take on Me. That one will take me back to my teenage years, so I've added it to the very long list, but I will HAVE to get to it. Thank you!
If you're enjoying the acapella and the basses, also check out VoicePlay and Home Free. Geoff Castelucci (VP bass) and Tim Foust (HF bass) are both incredible in their groups and on their solo channels.
Can't promise it will be next, but they will show up. I've done so many versions of The Prayer lately that I need a break. So many to choose from too. I actually dug up one song I really like, so Gods of TH-cam willing, I should soon hear PTX version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Don't worry, I'll be like Ross from Friends. Only on a break, not a break up with The Prayer 😉
So happy to see you here again with another PTX song. I've been keeping my eye out for you as I truly enjoyed your thoughtful reactions to these guys. Although this is obviously a cover of the great Simon & Garfunkel's original song, they have done a blend of that original and the cover done by Disturbed from a few years ago. Many have compared the original to a gentle warning, Disturbed's version as almost the angry apocalyptic warning, and this cover as a more hopeful reminder that we have a choice in how it goes. Someone suggested Dance of the Sugar Plum Dairies, and I agree it's a must. They actually won their 2nd Grammy Award for that song (first Grammy: Daft Punk, third Grammy: Jolene, with Dolly Parton, and nomination for their album Evergreen - oh, and Scott is up right now for his first potential Grammy for his solo original song Rose Without the Thorns. The overwhelming waves of music you feel is commonly referred to as the wall of sound, and they are experts at creating that wall. Thanks again for a fabulous commentary. Just a word of warning, their label is very finicky about reactors (the band actually loves them) so once they realize you are reacting to PTX you might get blocked. A way to avoid that is to cover the video with words, your logo, raindrops, anything that at least partially hampers a clear view of the group. Believe me, we (Pentaholics) have seen all of these videos so many times that we don't mind the blurry video.
Thank you so much! I am very glad to hear you enjoyed both reactions. Obviously, since I tend to delve deeper if I like something, there will be more. The wall of sound you mention is the part I believe I enjoy the most as it showcases them all as a very well rehearsed a cappella group - it really sounds like there's an entire choir rather than just 5 singers. As for the warning, I've found none of that stuff works, so I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and hope that the marketing people in their label understand that free marketing is good marketing, especially since it's sincerely positive... We'll see how it goes...
Thank you! I don't know, maybe that should be the last one I hear if it will reveal everything in one go. It's on the list now, just waiting for the right time. I'm a bit quirky that way... 😉
Glad you did this one, because it is one of my top picks for Pentatonix. But there are so many good ones, though. I love their melodic choices, their playfulness with harmonies etc. Like so often, I agree with your sentiments. It was plain to see you liked it ❤
Oh dear... That means that whatever I hear next won't top it. 😁 You've just named everything I like about them too. You're right, I really loved this one despite the fact that im emotionally attached to the original. It's not easy to make me love a cover if I love the original. Thank you again for traveling through music with me, Tolun! ❤️❤️❤️
@@AleksReacts I know what you mean about loving the original - covers just don't cut it 🤣. But these guys do it so differently and so well, that you just have to take notice. I do love S&G's original, too. It is one of the really great classics. I love this journey, too, Aleks. Side note, I have to correct myself almost every time I write your name, my hands wants to write Alex, and my brain says Aleks. Forgive me if I sometimes get it wrong, lol
We'll, the original always has a memory connected to it, so even if it's not great, it's just close to our hearts. No worries about getting the name wrong - happens a lot. I mean, it kept happening to me in this video. 😂
When you consider that it is only five people making all of the sound, each one is crucial for the song’s success. I agree that it comes down to preference for the bass. Each one has their own strengths. I find that Kirstie (thirsty) gives PTX a unique sound that other a cappella bands lack. Recommend their version of Amazing Grace.
You're absolutely correct on all points! Now, I am sure I will learn how to pronounce Kirstie correctly and thank you for pointing to it so unobtrusively, very sweet of you. Amazing Grace jotted down (and recommended quite often). ❤
It seemed like several of them were doing sudden key changes. They harmonize so well, I would love to hear them do some Beach Boys songs! Happy Sunday Aleks!
They have done two Beach Boy songs. They performed at a the 2023 Grammy salute to the Beach Boys, plus they've done God Only Knows on an official video.
@brodee2002 and @Gwennedd Hmmm, I've heard a couple of songs by The Beach Boys, not many to be honest, but I remember their voices and harmonies. God Only Knows is one I know. It seems they did Heroes and Villains at the 2023 Grammy salute to the Beach Boys and I have never heard that one (not that I am aware). Interesting journey ahead of me. Thank you all! ❤❤❤
I'm sure others have already mentioned it, but another thing that showcases Scott is that he takes over the bass part while the bass (Matt or Avi) is singing a solo. While he doesn't do really low bass parts, he can certainly cover down to medium bass, and yet he has also covered the same part that Ariana Grande sang in her song Problem - and that is NOT a low vocal tone! BTW: an easy way to remember Kirstin's name and correct pronunciation is a little saying she put together: Kirstin like thirstin', I'm thirstin' for Kirstin. Kirstie like thirsy, I'm thirsty for Kirstie. She goes by either Kirstin or Kirstie, either one is fine with her. And speaking of Kirstin and Mitch's voices - their blend is just amazing! After listening to hundreds (thousands?) of their vocals over and over, there are songs that I've heard that I STILL can't be sure who is singing which part. When they want to blend their voices, it's almost impossible to tell them apart.
Thank you! Yes, others have mentioned that bit about Scott when I reacted to my first - Hallelujah. 😉 Also, thanks for Kirstie - I think that will be easier than Kirstin simply because I'm so used to Kristina in my country. Finally, I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble discerning between Kirstie and Mitch. Thank you so much for your comment. ❤❤❤
As a poor lonesome cowboy far from his Far East home, and though I hold this song dear, I had somewhat forgotten the old version by Simon and Gargamel, knowing only Disturbed's rendition on this side of our cosmic billiard ball. Suffice it to say, I was completely unaware of the perfectly crafted studio creation conjured by Pentatonix. It's refined to the last detail and, for that reason, stands in stark contrast to my favorite versions of "The Sound of Silence," which are live and... Asian (yes, I know, I'm the yellow peril on this channel). One version, though not my favorite, holds a certain charm for me : the rendition by the Super Vocal boys Wang Xi, Li Qi and Ju Hong Chuan who virtually improvised their live trio performance during the 2018 competition ( th-cam.com/video/x6-2ER1IVzo/w-d-xo.html ). They, too, possess beautiful voices, of course, albeit fewer in number and not achieving the same level of perfection or precision. Yet, they offer something far more alive. My true favorite version is undeniably the extraordinarily creative and hypnotic performance by the Korean band Forte di Quattro ( th-cam.com/video/xofSDnasW4A/w-d-xo.html ), also live, though significantly more rehearsed than Super Vocal’s spontaneous delivery. While I usually favor Forestella over Forte di Quattro, that is not the case here. To be fair, Forestella's version is an older one from their early days ( th-cam.com/video/facu-I30uWE/w-d-xo.html ). It’s still very pretty… but nothing more.
I can't believe you also mentioned Disturbed. Does everyone know this but me? On the other hand, aha! got you with Pentatonix! It's a win as you seem to have liked them! 🥰 You may be the yellow peril, but I'm stuck anyway between East and West and to top it all in a land where the word "vampir" came from, with THIS complexion. 🤣 Btw, I usually turn yellow in the sun... Talk about luck... I am jotting down your preferred version for now, Forte di Quattro. Don't want to overdo the suggestions and then miss them all because the list is too long. I do want to dip my toes in at some point and sure will not remember everything...
@@AleksReacts Once again, I am not sharing all these links to suggest reactions but merely to illustrate my point. At the very least, they serve as a general element of documentation (allowing you to know that such-and-such an artist exists), and at best, they might be something pleasant to listen to off-camera for your enjoyment (or that of anyone interested). And, of course, if one or two links among them seem worthy of a reaction, that's certainly not forbidden. But my intention is not to potentially suggest you react to as many links as I leave, machine-gun style. Consider me a kind of condensed Wikipedia. (As I mentioned in response to your question, "Where do I come from?", for the retired journalist I am, my comments are merely an opportunity to craft mini-articles). Regarding the "yellow peril" to which your skin is sensitive under the sun, and since you call me "Mr. Zero" (Mr. Ling in Mandarin), let me inform you that in China, you could be Mrs. Huang (Yellow). When so many Chinese people, following Bruce Lee's example, westernize their names, it’s high time Westerners started orientalizing theirs.
I have not forgotten. 😉 The reason I wrote down almost all you listed so far is that I do want to add some Far East songs to my channel, just can't quite decide when and where to begin... I must have missed your response to my question where you come from. It's very hard to find some comments, which probably explains why reactors don't respond to all of them. I actually go "digging" for old comments and TH-cam keeps insisting on a strange way of showing them... Would you mind terribly if I asked you to copy your reply here, so I can find it? NEVER MIND, I found it and replied. So far, I only learned the pronunciation of my name in Japanese with a lot of Rs instead of Ls and some additional syllables it seems. To top it all, I learned that from a 1st year student of Japanese language here in Serbia, so I'm not sure it is how it would really be pronounced in Japan. Since my last name is very tricky and has a very complicated translation, I wonder is there a Chinese first name that would correspond to Aleksandra, my full first name? Now, I want to be clear. I do not think anyone should change their name. Having worked with Chinese people in my career, even when they Westernized their names I would always ask for their actual name and do my best to pronounce it correctly. It always struck me as odd that they themselves would accept being called Wendy when their name is not even close. One's name is what it is. A name reflects who we are and should be respected as much as the person it belongs to. It should neither be Westernized, nor Orientalized. This is precisely why I try very hard to pronounce every artist's name as it should be in their own language.
@@AleksReacts The westernization of Chinese names is a curious phenomenon. On one hand, there is rarely a direct correspondence. Why did Zhou Shen choose the name Charlie ? Or Huo Zun, Henry ? A mystery ! Sometimes it's even stranger, for instance when Huang Xiao Yun adopted the name Ghost. Occasionally, they take multiple Western names. Add to this the fact that they often use nicknames : Zhou Shen becomes Shenshen, Huo Zun is Zunzun, and so on. Xiao Yun, besides Ghost, is also Bread, Wink XY, and even "the lung." As for me, once I discover a singer by their Chinese name, I can no longer call them by their Westernized one, and vice versa. Terry Lin or Angela Chang will always remain Terry and Angela. Huang Qi Shan, however, will never be Susan to me. And about Dimash, who became Di Ma Shi, I find that rather amusing. As for whether a Chinese equivalent of Aleksandra exists... I don’t believe so. Chinese names are composed of word-ideograms. Let’s take the example of Huang Xiao Yun : Huang means "yellow," Xiao means "sky," and Yun means "cloud." Together, Xiaoyun suggests the idea of a "zenith." This has nothing to do with the structure of our names. Of course, in Aleksandra, Alexo Andros means "protector of men," and that could perhaps be translated into Mandarin... but that’s beyond my expertise. By the way, I once had a Serbian friend named Aleksandar (we called him Sasha). A former footballer, he had left Yugoslavia in the 1960s. He was genuinely friendly and very helpful. Great Sasha, indeed !
Omg, I can't believe Dimash became Di Ma Shi. That IS funny! 🤣 I too have wondered at the logic of the name Westernization... Something that is not funny at all is that you know the meaning of my name i.e. "protector of men". By the way, female version of the nickname for Aleksandra is Saška, just like it's Saša for Aleksandar. 😊 It's just that I never liked that nickname - sounded to cute. I'm a lot of things, but not really cute. My mom wanted to name me Sunčica - basically Sunny, which along with the effect of the Sun on my and my personality really would not have worked. Thankful that didn't happen. 🤣 I'm glad you got to meet my namesake and that he, as we say in Serbia "brightened our cheek" meaning proved to be honorable (your cheek being your honor). Many people in former Yugoslavia are simply warm-blooded and they will either be very friendly or very much the opposite. Glad you ran into the positive one. ❤ I met a Frenchmen through this channel and he, being from the South of France is very similar to Serbians, warm, welcoming, chatty and open. Your knowledge is vast and should be shared even if it is in comments. I do appreciate learning new things. Thank you so much for everything you've shared so far and please continue to do so. Every time I read your comment I learn something new. ❤
I believe the low base you heard was actually Scott. Scott always takes over the base when the base singer (Matt/Avi) has his solo. Hope this makes sense. Avi and Matt are both trained singers and both have their own strengths. I love them both.
It's Kirstin, not Kristin. The easy way to remember is that she's also known as Kirstie, and that rhymes with "thirsty." And yes, it can be *very* difficult to distinguish her voice from Mitch's, especially when they're both singing accompaniment. Also, I should probably mention that some of those bell tones are coming from Kevin, even while he's also being the entire percussion section.
Kirstie it is! Thanks for that! Kirstin sounds too much like a Serbian name Kristina and I just can't say it right. But I will be able to say Kirstie without the N. 😉 Are you serious about the bell tones? Kevin? These people are a land of (very enjoyable) confusion. Suits a chaotic like me. Thank you again! ❤
@@AleksReacts Kirstin has a lot of trouble with people getting her name wrong; "Kristina" or "Christine" or variations of them are more common in the U.S., as well. People may *talk* about how "the pentaholics will come after you with pitchforks" if you get something wrong, but that's just talk. In reality, Pentatonix has one of the most tolerant fan bases around. Yes, we argue occasionally, but our "arguments" are really more like discussions, and if someone presents evidence that we're wrong about something we concede the point. We don't engage in fan feuds, and we value reactors like yourself. Also, one of the reasons I try to include pronunciations in my comments that identify who's who in a particular song is that I remember being a newbie and trying to figure these things out with inadequate information. And I know better than to expect people to remember all the details next time they react; that simply isn't how memory works for most people. So don't stress yourself over these things. We'll let you know if you get something wrong, but we won't take offense. As for Kevin and bell tones, yes, I'm serious. In a band composed entirely of remarkable people, Kevin may be the most remarkable. He doesn't have a huge range, like all the others, but he may have the greatest theoretical understanding of music; certainly he's listed as co-composer on almost all of their original music. He's a world class cellist. His gorgeous falsetto is probably the highest anyone in the group can sing (not counting Kirstin's whistle notes). He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and would have been in Yale Medical School the next year if he hadn't agreed to join three teenagers and a bass for a television talent show. He's fluent in five languages, including Mandarin. The man is a polymath, a genius in multiple areas. And on top of that he's one of the kindest people in the world. I would dearly love to have a conversation with him someday; I have a whole list of questions.
In my experience so far fans "coming after reactors with pitchforks" has just not happened. I'm either lucky to attract really great people or all of the fans of the artists I've listened to are great. Or, worst case scenario, the "pitchfork people" have just not yet shown up. 🤣 Either way, if I apologize for getting something wrong, it's out of respect to the artists rather than anything else. I mean, if I'm going to comment on them and "judge" them, I should at least have the courtesy to say their name correctly. 😉 Thank you for additional info on Kevin - he does sound very interesting and I expect I'll learn more first hand as I hear more of their music. Thank you again for everything! ❤❤❤
I think that they purposefully show certain people singing so you can see things like Scott briefly singing the base when Avi or Matt sing lead. That is why the video is helpful, but they have some good songs with no video. The evolution videos are great to watch, Bohemian Rhapsody shows how amazing Kevin is at beatboxing, Imagine is a deeply personal video, Amazing Grace is beautiful, The Prayer is so good Scott sings in Italian, their Daft Punk medley won them their first Grammy. So much to choose from.
I'm pretty sure you're right. Even then, as it's obvious, some of us are not sure. By now, I have 129 suggestions for the PTX songs/covers. Yes, so many to choose from already! It's only been 10 days. 🤣❤
1. Yes, that's Matt on the left. This video is from February of 2019, so it's been nearly 6 years since they released this. The ranges of both Matt and Scott have increased *immensely* in those years. Matt's falsetto now rivals Kevin's for the highest in the group, and Scott comes very close to matching him. And on the low end, in live performances when Scott takes over the bass line during Matt's solos, his voice is now indistinguishable from Matt's. 2. #Pentatonix typically uses those bell tones to replace a piano part in an arrangement. If I recall correctly, Simon & Garfunkel frequently performed this song with both piano and guitar accompaniment. 3. I believe this is in a different key from the original. I *think* they wanted it a bit lower so Matt could come out with that wonderful bass drop during his solo. As for Mitch, he may be best known for his ethereal high notes, but he has a range of just over 6 octaves so he's fairly comfortable with a lower part. 4. In the 60 years since Simon & Garfunkel first released "Sound of Silence" it has been covered by many singers. The two best known covers right now are probably this one and a cover by a band named "Disturbed." Many people absolutely *love* Disturbed's cover; some of them think Disturbed is the original artist. 😱 😠 Personally, I think Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" is technically very good, but I also find it angry and overwhelmingly arrogant. There's nothing wrong with a song being angry, but when that anger is combined with arrogance it seems to bring out the worst in people. I'm not a fan of Disturbed's version of "Sound of Silence." However, Disturbed's cover came out before this cover, to great acclaim, and it appears that Pentatonix may have meant this as a response to Disturbed. There has been much speculation about the meaning of "Sound of Silence." Because it was released shortly after President Kennedy's assassination, many people thought it was about that. Some people think that Paul Simon foresaw the internet. Some people think it's set in the aftermath of a global catastrophe, either nuclear war or climate change; this is apparently the view of Disturbed. But Paul Simon did talk about this, and here's what he had to say: "…we have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate." However, since so many people hear the song as a warning of planetary disaster, the best version comparison I've heard goes like this: Simon and Garfunkel warned us. Disturbed is angry that we didn't heed the warning. And Pentatonix says that it isn't too late - we can still save the planet if we're willing to make the effort. Is Pentatonix right? I don't know. But I'm CERTAIN that if we just give up we lose, so I'm with Pentatonix on this one. If they're wrong and it's already too late, at least we'll go down fighting for our planet, and that beats the heck out of the only other option I see, writing an angry suicide note.
1. Good to have a proper confirmation. I'm not highly musically educated, so the good thing is I can partly understand what you're saying, but can't imagine it without hearing it. 2. I don't remember Simon & Garfunkel performing this one with both piano and guitar accompaniment. I only remember the classical guitar, but that might just be because I haven't heard the ones accompanied by the piano as well... This is why the bell tones were such a surprise to me and a very welcome one. 3. Like with point 1, my technical knowledge is very limited. It might be, doesn't sound like the original at all, but there are too many voices for me to be able to tell why. 4. That is just rude and honestly somewhat shocking. 🤨 You're the Nth person to mention Disturbed, so I guess I'll have to check it out and see what my view on it is. As for the meaning of the song, I'll share my view. People might be overcomplicating it. It came out in the middle of the Vietnam war and Simon & Garfunkel belong to the era of the "flower children". Everything back then seems to have been for peace and connection between people and nature (and love for the fellow man). Paul Simon's words on the song make total sense. Funny that I heard hope, mainly due to Kirstie's part in the PTX version, while I heard sadness and a sort of hopelessness in the S&G version. Don't really think planetary warning was the idea of the S&G version though... Neon God and subway walls simply sound far from nature and far from one another to me... Then again, that's me...
@AleksReacts I'm in my 70s; I was in elementary and high school in the 1960s, in college and a flower child in the early '70s. Flower Power was a reaction to the Vietnam war, and the draft. President Kennedy was assassinated in November of 1963, and "Sound of Silence" was released a bit less than a year later. Kennedy had gotten us into Vietnam, but it wasn't yet apparent what a disaster that war would become. The Beatles had appeared on _The Ed Sullivan Show_ in February of 1964, so American teenagers had just begun to have a fascination with British rock stars. Long hair was becoming popular for boys, but Flower Power was nonexistent or in its infancy. The Woodstock Rock Festival was still 5 years in the future. I think Paul Simon was totally truthful when he said the song was about people having trouble communicating. This is *always* a problem, in every generation, every era. And you're right; his version sounds sad, because miscommunication is a sad thing; it destroys relationships. "Subway walls and tenement halls" are, indeed, an urban environment, not the peace of nature, but what they say to me, as an American, is "New York City." "Neon god" makes me think of television. The word I wonder about is "cobblestones"; that sounds like a very old-fashioned place. I wonder where Paul Simon envisioned when he wrote that.
That is so odd, as my mom was a teenager in the 60's and her first cousin was very much into the hippie lifestyle already listening to The Rolling Stones and The Beatles in the early 60's. I thought Flower Power must have started around the same time in the USA or even earlier than in former Yugoslavia. Then again, you lived through that time, so you'd know better than I possibly could (even if I read all history books which I didn't) 😁 Thank you for sharing all of that with me - it's always cool to hear things straight from the source. ❤ Actually, "neon god" being the TV does make sense. As for "cobblestones" it might be because he was dreaming of the past and then got woken up "by the flash of a neon light" and thrown back into his present. Obviously, I'm referring to "In restless dreams, I walked alone, narrow streets of cobblestone, etc." That again points to Simon telling the truth, if our interpretations of the whole thing are correct...
I know, it just makes me smile. Matt's bass can't match Matt's but Matt fits so well. If you had to have one take Avi's place, Matt's the one. S&G was like the warning, Disturbed's version was the alarm of the coming, it's here, and PTX feels of hope amongst the alarm. (Kirstie, like thirsty, or Kirstin).
I think I like Avi more, because of that velvety sound, but I'm really not 100% sure. To be fair, I've only heard two songs... So many have mentioned Disturbed, so I'll add that one to the list too. Thanks for Kirstie - will remember it now. So many of you were kind to tell me, instead of yell at me (which can happen), so I'm very thankful for that. ❤
i would really love to see you react t Crhris Stapleton "Sometimes I Cry'" or Tenesseee Whiskey"...both live....Country can be good everyehere..funny but true....
Your taste in music has always been good, so off to the list he goes. My contact with country is pretty much Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and believe it or not Dean Martin. If you haven't (though you probably have), give Dean Martin's Houston a listen. Sounds really good and it's also very funny. Love to you and yours ❤❤❤
They probably might not hit Serbia on their next world tour, who knows? However, Italy may be a possibility 🤷🏾♀️. Kirstin recently announced her 2nd pregnancy, so not sure when next they'll be touring outside the U.S. If you subscribe to their channel, you will see tour announcements.
That is lovely news about Kirstin! 🥰 Thank you! I am already subscribed to their channel! Every time I do a reaction to any artist I subscribe to their channel and include a link in the description. That's also how I sometimes find a new song to react to aside from simply showing respect to the artists. 😊 I could hardly afford a ticket if they came to Serbia. There is no way I can make it to Italy. 🤣 Don't get me wrong. I chose reduced stress over money, so that's good and I can enjoy the music online. In some rare situations, I'll hear it live... Then again, I'm not really enjoying crowds as much as I used to... We'll see, nothing's set in stone.
If you want to compare Matt's voice with Avi's you couldn't choose a better song for the comparison than "Hallelujah." You can find their current version here: th-cam.com/video/Se0BmDdZuX0/w-d-xo.html There are, however, a couple of differences that you *won't* specifically find in "Hallelujah": 1. Avi doesn't want to be in Pentatonix any longer, and Matt is overjoyed to be a member. Avi's style has evolved away from Pentatonix. He writes most of his own music now, and enjoys being a solo singer. And most of his music is what I would call "Americana." Not *quite* Country music, but close. Pentatonix has a more pop style. 2. The rhythm section has two parts: percussion and bass. In Pentatonix that means Kevin and either Matt or Avi. Percussion and bass have to work together very closely, *especially* in a capella music, because the bass is a component of the drum sounds the beatboxer is producing. I've heard reactors claim that Kevin couldn't possibly be making all those sounds himself; he *must* have an actual drum track playing. They're half right - it isn't *all* Kevin; it's Kevin plus the bass. They're 100% wrong about the drum track, though. But the interesting thing about the drum track claim is that I only hear it on reactions to songs where Matt is the bass, never Avi. The thing is, Avi's voice is spectacular, but it *isn't* subtle. Mitch could be in the middle of the most angelic solo you ever heard, and if Avi started singing everyone would say "Oh! That bass!" and would listen to nothing but Avi for the rest of Mitch's solo. But Matt uses just enough bass to do the job; his bass enhances whatever the soloist is doing. *And,* when he's singing in rhythm with Kevin he adds just enough bass to make the drums sound real, so people don't hear them as a beatboxer and a bass, all they hear is drums. That takes a huge amount of talent and control, which Matt has. I won't say that Avi couldn't do the same - likely he could - all I will say is that he never *did.*
Thank you, but I don't really want to compare them side by side. I'd like to hear them both in different interpretations and see if both of them simply enriched the group each in their own way, or if one was truly "better" than the other i.e. more to my personal taste. There is no such thing as the best artists in my opinion. Just personal taste... 1. The split seems to working from everyone's personal angle, which is the point. 2. The drum track claim IS interesting, but don't divulge everything yet. 😉 What will be left for me to find out? ❤❤❤
@keithmarshall3371 Ok, so I looked that up and turns out an "old guy" Henk Poort exists and sings Sound of Silence. He seems to have done Phantom Of The Opera with Floor Jansen (Nightwish lady). Never heard of the man, but seems he's a Dutch actor and singer. Well, onto the list he goes. 😉 @poolhallshark If you and Igor say so, I really will. ❤❤❤
So many more for you…..Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, I Just Called To Say I Love You, Mad World, O Holy Night, Daft Punk (medley) To see Kevin play his cello, while beatboxing, Say Something, Shallow, live version of Kiss From A Rose
And it’s Kirstie (rhymes with ‘thirsty’)
They all have side solo projects but try listening to Scott’s original Mars (live - choir version)
Thank you! They are aptly called then. I thoroughly enjoyed both of the songs I've heard so far.
This! I commented almost exactly this on the Hallelujah video
@@jeffgoldman1479 Aleks is a gem!
@@AleksReacts make sure to include their newest O Holy Night on the list, Matt is stunning in that one especially.
I LOVE your metaphor: they bathe us in music! YES. Absolutely correct!
Thank you, Jenny! Just sharing what I'm feeling/thinking. ❤❤❤
Truth be told, I do love their harmonies and it's hard to escape from saying that.
@@AleksReactsThank you so much for the quick response. Looking forward to reacting even More.
Very good! Following for more Pentatonix reactions. I have been to Serbia! For our 30th wedding anniversary, we took a river boat cruise across Europe. In Serbia, we toured the opera house in Belgrade and also saw the red rocks.
Thank you! Those are some unusual spots to visit, so very cool! Hope the hospitality here was up to par and that you enjoyed your time in Serbia. ❤❤❤
You're very interesting.
Kiss from a rose - Pentatonix
Gotcha! 😊
@@AleksReacts ♥♥♥
That wave of music you were talking about is Pentatonix's "Wall of Sound."
I believe Mitch's performance in "Amazing Grace" is his best in his lower register.
Can't wait to see you react to more PTX! ❤
Thank you! It's my understanding that few reactors read ALL the comments. 🤣 I could not help but learn them all. Not my fault really. 😂
It was fun to hear Mitch's very high tones in Hallelujah and then very normal voice here.
Thank you!
@kathycarias1271 Not to worry, Amazing Grace is also on the list, in your name. ❤
If you're enjoying the acapella and the basses, also check out VoicePlay and Home Free. Geoff Castelucci (VP bass) and Tim Foust (HF bass) are both incredible in their groups and on their solo channels.
Thank you! Yes, I do enjoy both and since more than one person mentioned VoicePlay and Home Free I do plan to check them out. 😊
I’m so excited for your journey down this rabbit hole! I hope you react to The Prayer or O Holy Night next!
To people who are new to ptx I always recommend the evolution of music, to show their range of styles
@@AleksReacts ❤❤
When you consider that it is only five people making all of the sound, each one is crucial for the song’s success.
I agree that it comes down to preference for the bass. Each one has their own strengths.
I find that Kirstie (thirsty) gives PTX a unique sound that other a cappella bands lack.
Recommend their version of Amazing Grace.
You're absolutely correct on all points! Now, I am sure I will learn how to pronounce Kirstie correctly and thank you for pointing to it so unobtrusively, very sweet of you. Amazing Grace jotted down (and recommended quite often). ❤
Fans of Pentatonix are called Pentaholics
It seemed like several of them were doing sudden key changes. They harmonize so well, I would love to hear them do some Beach Boys songs! Happy Sunday Aleks!
That would be one interesting cover to see! 😂 Thank you, hope you're having a good one. ❤️
@@AleksReacts PLEASE react to their cover of The Beach Boys, 'God Only Knows'!
IT IS AMAZING!
They have done two Beach Boy songs. They performed at a the 2023 Grammy salute to the Beach Boys, plus they've done God Only Knows on an official video.
@ wow thank you, I’ll have to look for that 👍🏼
@brodee2002 and @Gwennedd Hmmm, I've heard a couple of songs by The Beach Boys, not many to be honest, but I remember their voices and harmonies. God Only Knows is one I know. It seems they did Heroes and Villains at the 2023 Grammy salute to the Beach Boys and I have never heard that one (not that I am aware). Interesting journey ahead of me.
Thank you all! ❤❤❤
Ez is nagyon jó volt!kiválóak!😊
Yes, they really are. Sorry, writing from my phone, so hard to use Google translate.
You may be the yellow peril, but I'm stuck anyway between East and West and to top it all in a land where the word "vampir" came from, with THIS complexion.
Xiao Yun, besides Ghost, is also Bread, Wink XY, and even "the lung."
As for me, once I discover a singer by their Chinese name, I can no longer call them by their Westernized one, and vice versa.
I'm glad you got to meet my namesake and that he, as we say in Serbia "brightened our cheek" meaning proved to be honorable (your cheek being your honor).
7:19 I knew you would change your mind about Scott 😊 it only gets better. Love me some PTX!!!
Bit by bit, day by day, song by song. That's how we get to know creative people. Through their work. 😊
I believe the low base you heard was actually Scott. Scott always takes over the base when the base singer (Matt/Avi) has his solo. Hope this makes sense. Avi and Matt are both trained singers and both have their own strengths. I love them both.
In this song I believe it was Matt, but hey, I've been wrong before. 😊
Thank you for additional info on Kevin - he does sound very interesting and I expect I'll learn more first hand as I hear more of their music. Thank you again for everything! ❤❤❤
React to Amazing Grace... another classic of theirs... wonderful reaction... I love to see people realizing their pure talent...
Thank you! I plan to, it's just that I can't react to all at the same time. 😃
@@AleksReacts When hearing / reading "Amazing Grace" I immediately think "Dan Vasc"...
I got that one down from about 10 days ago, but as you now know me better, I will get to it eventually. 😉
@@AleksReacts Oh I felt like I might have mentioned Dan, was not sure, and as I read "Amazing Grace" I had to mention him, it's a reflex... :)
I've gotten to know you, just making sure you know I am paying attention. Love to Bavaria ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you! 🙂
@AleksReacts I had forgotten all about that, so thank YOU! 🙂

Personally, I think Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" is technically very good, but I also find it angry and overwhelmingly arrogant.
But Paul Simon did talk about this, and here's what he had to say:
"…we have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate."
However, since so many people hear the song as a warning of planetary disaster, the best version comparison I've heard goes like this: Simon and Garfunkel warned us.
@AleksReacts
I'm in my 70s; I was in elementary and high school in the 1960s, in college and a flower child in the early '70s.
Actually, "neon god" being the TV does make sense.
Watch VEVO live performace of Kiss From a Rose..from PTX..you will really see Scotts vocal talent..all amazing..
Thank you, added to the list. ❤
i would really love to see you react t Crhris Stapleton "Sometimes I Cry'" or Tenesseee Whiskey"...both live....Country can be good everyehere..funny but true....
I could hardly afford a ticket if they came to Serbia.
If you want to compare Matt's voice with Avi's you couldn't choose a better song for the comparison than "Hallelujah." You can find their current version here: th-cam.com/video/Se0BmDdZuX0/w-d-xo.html
There are, however, a couple of differences that you *won't* specifically find in "Hallelujah":
Good rendition..still think Disturbed is the best but very good non the less....also one of my favorite songs....
I really liked this one. I'm not sure if I heard the Disturbed version. Sounds like I should, yeah?

@keithmarshall3371 Ok, so I looked that up and turns out an "old guy" Henk Poort exists and sings Sound of Silence. He seems to have done Phantom Of The Opera with Floor Jansen (Nightwish lady). Never heard of the man, but seems he's a Dutch actor and singer. Well, onto the list he goes. 😉
