  • With the 2021 season officially coming to an end with the Russian Tennis Federation winning the Davis Cup, there is plenty of time for the tennis world to introspect before the new season kicks off in a few weeks.
One of the bigger talking points in recent times has been the slow pace of the sport to adapt to changes with regards to scoring format and other innovations. While several changes have been introduced at the ATP NextGen Finals, the ATP & WTA tours have been hesitant to adopt most of these changes.
In the latest episode of Match Points, Josh Cohen debates with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, noted tennis journalists Carole Bouchard and Simon Cambers, and tennis analyst Craig O'Shannessy on whether some of these changes should be introduced at the ATP level.

They call this format Fast4 in the UK.
It makes the outcome more of a lottery.

Im having a tough time with the popularity argument. Tennis is in the top 5 watched sports globally. Its got more regular watchers and participants than American Football with all its razzmatazz and highly paid athletes. I know more than a few people who watch the Next Gen, not for the players, but to see what rules they are trying. They have some good rules and some shockers but will they change the way non tennis watchers/fans view the sport? No. So stop trying to cater for people who will never watch anyhow. And the younger players if their good enough will become names, and real fans know who they are.
Some changes that should be made.
Better respect for officials. Player power has probably done the most to harm the game. We even have a clock now because some players didnt like the umpire coding them for excessive time and taking 40+ secopnd between serves was becomming more and more common with the umpired unable to do anything because of player power. At Wimbledon, one year I was lucky enough to watch Nadal vs Novac. I went to the loo at 3 all and got a drink for my wife and I. I came back to 4 all. And it wasnt super long rallies or massive Duce-Add that was the issue. It was those 2 taking so fricking long between points, bouncing the damn ball, Novac being warned and arguing for ages. I dont know how long I was gone, but there was a queue for both the loo and the drinks. Knock the player power on the head.
On court coaching. No, get rid of it and code the players that have coaches who think the rules dont apply to them. It bring nothing to the game and at the grass routs and ITF level it wholly unfair. Some players dont have the funds for a travelling coach, and some kids definitely dont. Tennis is a mental sport, it wont be if a coach is sitting there with a laptop giving their players all the answers.
No add games works, I like it.
    Fast 4's for doubles only.
No service lets. The argument to keep it goes out the door when its allowed during a rally. And it will take a lot of cheating in self umpired matches.
Better and clearer rules on timeouts etc. Some players are almost bankable that at X momentum in a match, Trainer. This needs better attention.
