- The UNC Board of Trustees have ordered an audit of the university’s athletic department due to concerns over revenue. One of the trustees bluntly told news outlet WRAL that he is advocating for the Tar Heels to leave the ACC and move to a higher revenue conference. Will UNC make a play to join the SEC or Big Ten? Will UNC join Florida State and Clemson in suing the ACC?

It has been reported later in the decade it could be nearing 60 million less than the P2 schools. That won’t fly, it’s financial not personal.
Since both the B1G and SEC are in the middle of their current media deals, I doubt any teams outside of Notre Dame gets added to the power two at full shares. Half shares will be the norm and that's roughly 30mil less a year for the lifespan of the current media deals.

Kenton, I'm curious about that viewership stat with Duke being the most watched. Does it adjust for opponents? Duke played games against Clemson, ND and FSU. Seems a bit disingenuous if there is no adjustment.
This is UNC. We want to file a lawsuit against the ACC, but we don't have the fees to pay for any legal fees or a law firm. Can we just be okay with an, IOU.
IMO Phillips has not done everything he could do to make the ACC more money. If the gap wasn't bad enough the ACC and Big 12 caved to the SEC and B1G on the new playoff money and accepted much less. Swofford created this mess by adding basketball schools when he should have been adding big football brands. The ACC is like a mobile home with mismatched rooms added on in different decades.
Watched that insane video of a UNC board meeting yesterday. It got ugly in there. I mean, very ugly. UNC is in so much debt, they can't stay in the ACC. They can't afford to stay there. And they have a new meeting on Thursday morning. Get your popcorn ready! UNC is like 7th in the nation in athletic debt!

Really UNC! The former ACC commissioner and a UNC alum is the reason, the ACC is where it is now! Think BB first for so long but especially the last 10 to 12 years has doomed the ACC as we know it now!
Keeep in mind the UNC system BOG will be requiring that UNC BOT make a business case for moving. The AD audit is the beginning of that. This audit will show the challenges of operating in the current landscape but the real meat on the bone comes with projected comparisons of P2 revenues vs ACC.

What are these guys talking about? UNC is desired by both the SEC and the B!G. This is a farily common thought among any and every sports media person following expansion. UNC's problem is that albatros around their neck called NC State. Not that I care what happens to UNC. They can slide into oblivion with the other ACC peons for all I care.

I’ll have to respectfully disagree, where I would predict the SEC wanting both UNC and NC State. The same with UVA and VTech. I could also perhaps see both Kansas and Duke as a package but as partial tv revenue earners similar to both Oregon and Washington.

Private schools do file public financials when they issue muni bonds. Both have to file quarterly financials on EMMA which is public.
So their disclosure rules are different but they have to file full financial statements every quarter.

I was told for months that North Carolina population growth, academics, and undergrad enrollment would prop up UNC indefinitely. Guess not. 😂
And that Trustee will be fired and replaced by the BOG.
When looking at if/when another school sues the ACC, I think it will be on the opposite side of the equation. Agree, it's likely one or more of the private schools, but the suit could be for damages caused by mismanagement of concerns. Does WFU, BC, Duke, Miami have cause to go after other schools and ACC leadership for the damages this process is causing them? Could they use it a pretext to build that private school league using ACC assets? Could we see a reformed ACC with the core being Stanford, SMU, BC, Duke, WFU, Miami, ND...? Could a league focused on the needs/desires of private universities draw interest from P2 private schools? I don't know how this shakes out, but it is clear a lot of powder is being kept dry for future entanglements.
Yes, the private schools stand to lose actual $$$$ if FSU/Clemson wins. That is actual $$$ damages. Therefore it is realistic to say they won't take that loss short of a federal court, maybe even the Supreme Court saying they have to.

Thanks! I knew John Swofford was a UNC alum. I didn't know he was the UNC AD 1980 to 1997 and Preside of ESPN Inc and co-chairman of Disney Media Network 2012 to 2017! Now, its clear, why, the ACC doesn't want that deal to be seen publicly! The fix was in by ESPN and they used Swofford a UNC grad! WTF!

This is a good start, but UNC still has a BOG problem to figure out. Either convince Wolfpack backpack to join them in a lawsuit and present to the BOG together, or grease the political palms enough to change some minds. The athletic department audit is to present financial evidence of a dire need to leave the conference or the BOG would be publicly blamed for UNC dropping some non revenue sports to apply public political pressure
What it will really show is the gross mismanagement of the athletic department by an inept AD. During COVID, many other schools slashed spending and tightened their belts. FSU, for example, let many people go in the athletic department and cut Mike Norvell’s salary by $500k. UNC, led by that utter buffoon Bubba Cunningham, did not cut one thing and kept on spending. Now those chickens have come home to roost. $17m in the red next year. That was avoidable. Other schools will attest to that. UNC is a clown show.

This is nothing. Just some guy spewing-off and feeling his own self-importance. Ole Davey, is just a trustee which is a person who acts as a custodian for the assets held within a Trust. He or she is responsible for managing and administering the finances of a Trust per the instructions given to them. Underline "per the instructions given to them." This is a minor finical official within a state system [basically a hugely overpaid mid-level manager type] who answers to and is given his instructions by the North Carolina State Government. A state government, by the way, who has already said openly and in the actual media that they want NC State and UNC to be tied together. So, this random guy and possibly his buddies and every UNC student, fan and university official (including their president) can "want" & say whatever they like but they actually have 0.00% say in the entire matter
Couldn’t the ACC create an ADDITIONAL contract with ESPN that would pay an additional payout linked to ratings? If they don’t want to mess with the GOR contract, nothing stops them from creating a 2nd payment stream to supplement what is being paid. And if they don’t do something to treat their “clients” more equally, I would think ESPN could be sued for unfair business practices or a form of price gouging for treating one conference one way, and another a different way. They have taken advantage of the ACC having a terrible Commissioner. And before anyone says “the teams in the big 2 are worth more” - it’s easy to build a program when you are being paid more. It’s circular logic, with the rich getting richer, and being able to be more successful. It’s really sad what they are doing to this sport.
Several schools fought for this last year but Jim Phillips wasn’t interested. Instead he made a small bonus for winning the conference (performance bonus)
@@Doc_Bootsthe best thing that could come out of those ACC meetings is a vote of no confidence. There HAS to be someone better qualified to lead this conference, stand up for the schools, and get us a better deal with our media partner. It’s gross negligence, and he’s showing zero fiduciary responsibility. If he was running a mutual fund this way, I think he’d be brought up on charges of fiduciary mis-management.

You guys are focused on the wrong bottleneck. The issue was always ESPN's double dealing and contract structure. I bet on the open market right now the ACC entire gets 60M per school from selling tiers to multiple network.
@@rx2878 you could be right, but Phillips granted a unilateral option to opt out or continue to 2036 for ESPN without any consideration for conference members in return. ACC now has no way to get on the open market unless ESPN drops the contract February 1st 2025 for the 2027 season onward

As far as football brands is concerned. After Fsu and Clemson it is Miami. I think the Acc after Clemson and Fsu leave if Miami stays around they will rebrand around Miami being the top football dog. Because at that point in the Big 12 i think dont have a better football brand better than Miami.
Miami isn't staying! Miami will be in the B10! Miami is not behind Clemson! Clemson isn't in South Florida or in the 3rd largest state. I live here in Florida, the state is 23 million and counting. I'm originally from Chicago/Midwest. This state if full of MidWest and East coast transplants which means a lot of B10 alums and fans live here.
