    I just bought one last summer with 19 hp and pedal controls. It has not given me any trouble.

    I would add a fuel shutoff valve on the fuel line. Place it where the fuel filter is and move the fuel filter behind it. I had to do this to my grandmothers lawn mower which is an Ariens but looks just like this Poulan Pro with the briggs and Stratton engine. The carb has an electronic fuel shutoff solenoid but after time it either gets stuck or wears out. So the manual fuel shutoff is just added security to make sure your carb doesn't flood the engine, especially when you accidentally leave the key in the on position. Great video!

    I got a Cub Cadet XT1 LT46 enduro series with a 7000 series Kohler 725 cc V-Twin 22 hp and top speed is 5.5 mph forward and about 3.1 mph in reverse and it can cut real nice

    I know I just posted this comment as a reply to a reply, but I think it serves to be repeated as a standard reply. Good maintenance goes a long way!
    Meticulous oil changes in these Briggs & Stratton engines is one of the best ways to maintain them. That, and keeping all surfaces CLEAN and free of oil buildup, dust, mud, etc. The cooling fins should be cleaned between every other use, as dirty fins will allow excess heat buildup. Heat is the predator to these engines, and dirty oil. Just doing these two things will nigh guarantee seamless operation of the engine. I can speak from experience with these, as I have one myself, that the engine is one of your least concerns, though. Other concerns are:
    1) The geared transmission is usually quite resilient, but the hydrostatic can give you some trouble if it gets too dirty. Make sure, if you have a hydrostatic, that you clean clean CLEAN it. They aren't "supposed" to be serviceable, however they _can_ be serviced.
    2) Keep an eye on your belts, periodically. A common problem on these mowers' decks is that the belt guards (located at each pulley) can occasionally get bent, and then keep the blades from shutting off and disengaging on the MANUAL PTO style. Oftentimes, they will just need "un-bent." Check to see if you have excess wear on the inside of each guard, also. Ridges on them indicates that they are rubbing on the pulley during PTO engagement.
    3) Try your best to avoid front end collisions with ANYTHING, as the plastic that holds everything together to the hood on the inside is actually quite fragile.
    4) The OHV engines are prone (eventually) to loose valves. For whatever reason, the mounting studs can come loose. This is a common problem on Poulan, Husqvarna, Craftsman and Bolens (MTD) tractors. Usual symptoms are hard starting, random no start, random stalling, and rough idle even with good carburetor adjustment. It's an easy fix though, so don't be daunted by taking the valve cover off, if you ever have this problem.
    5) Lastly, make sure you have a clean fuel tank! I know it's common sense, but you'd be surprised how EASY it is for the fuel filter to get clogged in these!
    These tidbits are all things I've learned from experience having multiples of these. From 1994 on, they have been made nearly the same to this date, with very little styling changes, so actually a lot of parts are interchangeable between my '96 and a new one. Fuel tank design has changed, the front fascia has been "streamlined" and the PTO engagement has been altered (the handle is different), but many parts are still shared. Anyways, good luck with your tractors!

      GregmE2005 I just came across this mower at home depot were I live at and now it's $999 so it got me interested so I looked for a review and your video. Good review brother I really think I'll buy it. living in the country (just moved there) I need a good tractor that's not 1500/2000 dollars...I'm on a pretty big ass lot...have to say 2 to 3 acres BUT it's pretty flat so being new and $999 don't think I can go wrong on this.

    Greg, great video...have been looking at this one from HD but it says its Automatic? Would you recommend this for a 5'4" 115lb female...have been searching and searching and this one keeps popping up...thanks

      ggarbo303 - the manual is the cheaper one with 17.5 hp. The auto cost $100 more and has 19hp. I prefer the manual. This tractor would fit your needs if your cutting grass and pulling a lawn trailer behind it.

      Automatic is probably for the best. I think manual gives a lot more control though. But he is really serious when he says you can flip by popping the clutch in high gear. Especially with your body weight, it would really be a concern. It lifts me up to uncomfortable heights at 260 Pounds... The reason the auto is slightly higher horsepower is to compensate for it lacking a manual transmission. IT doesn't the manual is very powerful.

    I'm in the market for a riding mower. Went to home depot and saw this one for same price, $1099. Then for 100 bucks more, $1199 they have the same brand but 19hp and automatic. I was thinking about getting the 6 speed like yours, but I did the ole "I need to think about it" at the last minute. Just not sure what to do. We really need one, but $1100 is quite a bit of money for us to spend right now. What to do, what to do.

      Thanks, I'll check it out. But the automatic is sounding better and better the more I think about it. I've never had a riding lawnmower, we recently moved to a neighborhood with a pretty big yard so we definitely need one. Before we moved here, we lived on 120 acres with cows, so I never really cut the grass. Just thinking that an automatic would be nice so I can focus on just the grass and where i'm going rather than messing with gears. (unless it's much easier than I think. Like, do I have to switch gears constantly as I'm driving? Or lets say, could I keep it in second or third the whole time If I went a steady speed?...if that makes sense)However, I've been driving since I was like 9, and learned how to drive stick at 12. Anyway, I'll check out the vid, thanks again.

      Add the mulch kit deck rear deck wheels and front nose roller and it cuts truly like a top of the line machine

    I am looking at one of these but when I read the reviews of HD's website and there was a review that said you have to come to a complete stop before changing speeds. Is that true? Seems like kind of a pain to me.

      Its a manual transmission, Poulan does have a slightly more expensive model ~$200 more, and you get auto transmission and a higher quality deck. If thats an issue for you, get the slightly more expensive tractor.
      But yes, its true. You have to engage brake/clutch and move the lever on the right of the machine into a different gear to change speeds.

      sterline80 - yea i never tried to switch gears well i was moving. The manual transmission is a lot tuffer than the cvt automatic. There's no pullys to stretch out the belts. The manual transmission is alot better for pulling and working and longevity. The choice is yours.

      Froggey - Have not yet. Been looking at the mulch kit. My main reason is for looking into it is the side discharge can be messy at times.

      Yeah, I just bought Mulch kit from home depot, but I'm thinking of just plugging side discharge with kit and not installing mulching blades as its a brand new tractor and when I suck up leaves into bagger in the fall, I don't want to put normal blades back on machine...

      Let off the brake slower also engage the break then shift after releasing the break often the clutch will stay engaged just don't try and force it. It should feel just like if your pressing the brake and shifted.

    Ive owned this model poulan for 6 years and yesterday the transmission went out so its done. My view is its an ok tractor but with medium use and pulling any kind of trailers from time to time the lifespan is greatly shortened. You should get 10 years out of your tractor but I got 6. Here is the probs I had. First the grass cutting was never even until i replaced the factory spindles then it cut ok. The grass diverter will break off if you ram something & i tie wrapped mine back on. If you dont run pure petrol then about year 5 you will replace the carburetor. My model had an oil filter so not sure why they took that away. The grass height adjustment on mine never was any good and always caused issues. Thats the bad. Now the good. Its a powerful tractor while it last. You can pull a trailer around your property no probs. It cost less. The engine is good but suspect transmission. Will I buy another one now that mine died? No im afraid not. Im springing for the xtra 400 bux and going higher quality this time but if cash is a prob this is an ok buy just not for the long term.

      GregmE2005 Hey there. I have one of these from 1996, and despite its age, it still works. I just rebuilt the engine. Carburetor took a dump on it a month ago, and I decided that 21 years was long enough for original equipment. So, now we're all rebuilt, and I am expecting another 20 years! A lot of the parts that fit yours also fit mine. I am glad Poulan hasn't changed much in 20 years! I made a brief video of it on my channel. Enjoy your tractor!
