If my piano teacher had taught me this in 1972 instead of the same old boring "etudes" and classical songs, I would probably still be playing piano today. Here I am today, *finally* learning what I always wanted as a kid, but didn't know how to ask for.
Think alot of old band teachers are stick in the mud kinda like back to future guess you weren't ready for that but your kids are gonna love it they wanted you play their way my band teacher never liked what I did on drums
So true. But when I got old enough to pay for my own lessons, I went on a manhunt finding a piano teacher that plays modern western music. I too, was raised mostly on classical music and some contemporary pop music. But I got aggressive and actually started learning a lot of rock, country, and boogie woogie on my own with help from my teachers. All the teachers I had, instead of them teaching me, I actually ended up teaching my teachers because I progressed so quickly.
Thanks for sharing man. My son was on the verge of quitting piano. He was enrolled in classical lessons and was doing the etudes and classical songs and I could tell he wasn’t enjoying it anymore. I canceled his classes and He started picking up swing on his own six months ago and he’s been playing his best piano. I can tell he’s actually enjoying it and having fun too. I hope you have fun on your journey as well. Cheers!
Unfortunately, all many teachers know is classical music. I’m a piano teacher and I’m learning styles like this now for my students. But I’m not very proficient myself so it’s challenging to teach. Most teachers just teach what they where taught.
I'm thinking the same - I now learn piano as an old guy and it's going quite easy and fun. And the only reason is because I only play songs I like. I imagine what it must be for a little kid - I guess they play mostly classical pieces, Chopin etudes, etc... which for a kid must be a pure torture. Like training a bear to dance.
Awesome. I just impressed a room full of friends playing this riff on the piano I got for Christmas. cheers!
I really enjoy your videos Josef, being 84 yo really make it a challenge but it is fun.
Finally someone with a fantastic teaching technique who guides you to learn at your own pace. I have been playing piano for over 40 years and realise I tried to do too much too soon and got nowhere with Boogie Woogie. I am looking forward to going back to the basics and learning, with your help how to do it properly. Lastly, thank you for not introducing yourself shouting "Hey Dudes, whats happening?"
Me too and I fully agree with you!
Superb lesson! Thank you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thankyou so much I am 70 years old and love to learn
Wonderful! Boogie woogie is not only fun but builds strength and coordination. Well worth putting time into.
I've only just found you and thank god you don't run away with yourself showing off like a big head like most teachers do, brilliant mate, really, really good of you.
❤️ 💜. ♥️.
I’m 64 and I’ve had very few teachers in my life who can actually teach, or are interested in teaching, anything! You are a rarity, someone who can actually teach!! Thank you.
Haha thank you so much. Two weeks ago I didn’t know what the chords were, now I can play boogie woogie… brilliant
Josef, your teaching is just excellent,I enjoy in every part,it is like a gem for me...Greeting from Serbia !
You've saved my life! I need to pass myself off as a boogie woogie player for a production of Stepping Out and this tutorial has just saved me! Thanks loads!
Cool. First steps towards Jerry Lee Lewis! 👍
I like the last one. Never played boogie woogie before but the future is within my grasp

You do a brilliant job of teaching. I can’t wait to try to play boogie Wookiee!
Thank you for this! When I was first able to keep the left hand going and move the right hand around I was thrilled. Step by step. It's coming together.
Boogie woogie is the rhythm of life. 🎶
It certainly is Juuls. Nice vids btw!
Just perfect presentation with both the separate lit keyboard above your hands PLUS the written music in the upper right corner! Made it stress-free to follow. Subscribed!

AWESOME ! I am 63 & wish so much TH-cam & teachers like yourself would've been around when I was a boy ! I don't play but always wish I had ! The late Jerry Lee Lewis was one of my favorite artist growing up ! Even though I can't play, loved watching & listening . Thanks !
I've been trying to learn the boogie woogie, and keep finding myself coming back to your channel for the assistance. Thanks for the videos!!

Wolfgang Schneider
Good stuff for simpletons like me. 👍 I can follow it confidently.
Albert hall here I come.😊
Malgré mon anglais déficient, je vous félicite pour cette pédagogie simple et très encourageante pour les débutants en boogie !!!!
Hi Joseph. Can you say the notes as some of your viewers are blind. This has been a huge in your previous videos. Thanks
Hi Wendy. I will certainly keep that in mind when i'm teaching. Thx
I 100% agree. Great thing to ask for an an easy thing to keep in mind when teaching.
With that said. Viewers who are blind is a funny statement.
Thank you for this! It would be great if you could talk about what chords and chord combinations makes boogie woogie. Like in the example you played, I can tell you went from C, F (C6) on left, C minor or D# with your first right hand. I’m sorry if you already made a video about this. Thanks again, you’re good!
Now I can play and have fun. In between ode to joy an the cancan of course.
PERFECT TUTORIAL, GREAT TEACHER !
This was great - now I'm a bit different - I'm an accordion player trying to do boogie woogie. I was having difficulty putting together a right hand and this was just the thing. Thanks much for the effort.
excellent. thank you. I love the way you've explained bringing the hands together
THANK YOU!!!! BLESSINGS!
GET ON WITH IT!!!!!
What a great video to learn Boogie Woogie
A great player and a great teacher too. If only I had some talent and ability to do the things you make look ridiculously easy! Many thanks for this.
You can do it Jim. Might take some time, but stick with it. Its very rewarding! Thx or the kind words!
Hello Jim😊👍
For those looking for more info on the "pull back" technique it's also called a "grace note"
You're very good at teaching. I can play this now thank you
This is such a great lesson, thank you heaps. I tried Boogie Woogie from TH-cam 3 1/2 years ago, when the best boogie beginner lessons I could find all started me shifting the position of the left hand right away C, F, G, and tried me learning a riff with the right hand that wasn't anywhere near as "in synch" with the left hand rhythm as this. Unlike this lesson (which I can play) it was all impossible then, despite much effort and repeated attempts over the years. I think your path to gradually increasing the right hand complexity is so helpful and pragmatic, and it shows what a good teacher you are.
Beginner here…. Was going to quit giving this a try because I couldn’t get the coordination/timing. I slowed it WAY down (rockin’ it at turtle speed). I am able to do it. With lots of practice should be at normal/acceptable speed in a couple days. Thank you!
thank you friend!!!
The does look like fun. I’ll give it a try. Thanks.
Great tips /structure for a beginner here !
Good pace, well explained - makes me feel like I might have chance to actually achieve something 🙂
Hey Joseph … Well you are the official Boogie Woogie representative in the Torah Room overlooking St. Thomas Harbor in the Virgin Islands. Our “new” piano is a 1949 Acrosonic (Balwin), harmonically great for a Professor Longhair style of “barrel house” boogie woogie. Warehouse grade, fireproof brick walls, 50’ square many French door open to harbor and other warehouses and ships below. I’m a woodwind player struggling with a painful back but I will have something for our next gathering, this Friday. Thanks much … see you on my next tune. Subscribed. 🍷 L'Chaim
thank you for being a good teacher... 👍
What a really interesting way of learning, love your channel pal ... rock on 🤘
This is a killer lesson. I all the sudden want to play a lot. I got skills in 3 minutes that I needed for the last 6 months.
I have just finished day 5 of your boogie woogie course , great teaching style . I spent an hour or so a day and nailed the riff with both hands across the progression . Loving this , very grateful for the course . Not played a piano so getting the fingers relaxed etc is the most difficult thing .
Thank you so much .
Trefor
Excellent job thank you 🥳
It's been a decade since I last played the piano regularly and this is such a nice and straightforward introduction to boogie woogie! Been sitting for half an hour just working on hand independence with this
Love this lesson. Thank you! So much fun.
Awesome Brian!
Really enjoyed the teaching video with an achievable end result - keep up the good work.
So fun! What a great breakdown, thanks!
Thank you.
Thank you. Very good lesson.

Welcome 👍
Excellent video for a beginner! I wish I had this when i was first learning lol.
You are so great!! Thank you for taking your time to teach others and share your knowledge.
Be blessed!!!
How can I get the notes for the pieces you play?
Thank you!
Love this lesson. Thanks
Absolutely brilliant! This is great!😊
Thank you for the lesson! This is the second video of yours I've watched, I really like the way you explain the chords and there progressions. I am a guitar player that wants to add piano / keyboard to the mix, and in this video is the first time I ever heard the term power chord used for describing playing the piano, that was a very interesting bit of knowledge to pick up.
It sounded Awesome
Ditto.
thanks for the lesson
Literally just starting to learn piano. Look forward to hopefully reaching this level. Great presence on camera; followed 👍
thanks so much. great lesson.
Better if you use the index finger on the G in the left hand and thumb on the A as you play in the base 🤔👍🤪🕺🎶🇬🇧
I use both fingering versions. Thumb on both, or index and thumb to play chop. Both work and some fine one easier / better for them than another.
I just love B W but have never had the courage to take that first step. This lesson is simplicity on wheels, you really explain and demonstrate so well. There is nothing to hold me back now, more of the same please, thank you so much.
Great video, very helpful.
Nice. Thank you.
Love this, thank you!!!
This is great! The best lesson I’ve found 👍🏻🎹 Thanks so much
Love it
Nicely presented!
Thank you. :)
I just wanted to say thanks on day five I guess it is I got hand Independence and I'm feeling good bro thank you
Great lesson, thanks👍👍👍👍👍
This is awesome!!!! Thank you so much for this tutorial. Keep them coming 👍
I'm here as a guitarist of 10+ years learning some keys and I can't stress enough how you don't need to play it fast just yet! Stick with it, get it down, take a break if needed, come back. So many people give up because they can't play to the original tempo straight away/within a few tries.
U are a really good teacher.thank u
Great little lesson mate
