Its origin is the misunderstanding of 'Starring' in opening credits of TV series' usually being placed over the name of the leading actor; so as a result, people mistook 'starring' to reffer to the leading character as opposed to the entire cast. of the film. So its usage today could reffer to somebody who takes lead in any situation, a hero or used sarcastically. In the song, Busiswa talks about sleeping with another woman's husband regardless of how 'on fleek' her eyebrows may be or wearing lace panties, because she's the 'starring'. ;)

In South Africa we normally refer to the main actors or hero's in movie as istarring which is normally interpreted as just starring which means a person is part of a movie or play....In the song Busiswa is actually sending a message to her mans side chick. In South Africa, the term 'Starring' (pronounced Ster-ring) means "the star" taken from the list of cast members in a film so when someone says "ndim istarring" they are saying "I am the star" as in "I'm the boss/I'm the one"
Midnight Starring is basically a cheeky song by a side chick telling the main chick that no matter what she does, she is the star at the end of the night.

In the verse, she is essentially telling the main chick to go on being the main chick so long as she can continue being the side chick that gives the guy the best time.

DJ Tira, who comes in the second verse, uses Zulu.

In SA we call the main actor/star of a movie a "Starring" pronounced Ste-ring from the word "starring" from beginning credits of a movie.
The song is a sidechick saying to the mainchick even if you have your brows on fleek, wear lace panties, give it to him every week she is still the starring here. In verse 1 (by Busiswa) she tells the wife to do her house chores and go fetch firewood and while the wife's away the sidechick will come in the house. Back then when our folks were schooling, this is how they used English words and changed the context by using words differently, giving them new meaning..and this has formed part of local township slang, still relevant to current and upcoming generations.

Sade you're 100% right about the similarity with Pharrell's style in terms of the beat drop. The guys in the colourful outfits are called Skhothanes (Sko-ta-nee), which is a sub culture on it's own. Very similar to the way garage ravers dressed in late 90s with the off key Moschino print outifts. & it's Dj Maphorisa (the h is silent), track is produced by him plus, Rude Boyz (who did Gqi - Okmalumkoolkat) & Distruction Boyz (well spotted Bryan). Dj Tira is a legend, I'm sure u guys notice him from other videos, he pushed the Durban House wave which led to the Gqom wave which is the lick in SA now.

The song is done in IsiXhosa. It basically speaks about a woman who's in a relationship with this guy but in the whole process, the guy has a side chick.
