Not so much on these newer motors, and even if they do they can be easily cleared. I've been pressure washing engine bays since the very early 80s, and haven't once caused major issues.
1. Cover the alternator with foil, stay away from the fuse box. 2. Only use water pressure in safe areas like sides, painted surfaces, etc. A simple spray and wipe down should be sufficient in sensitive areas. 3. Do not liberally spray degreaser inside your engine bay. It'll ruin painted surfaces and plastic. Use a simple all purpose cleaner. 4. When you're done, you need to use a high temperature plastic/rubber restorer/protectant on those hoses, plastic covers, etc.
Yea if you cover all the electrical stuff then its fine, but for me I would never take a risk like that. I rather keep my engine bay dirty than accidentally destroying the car.
Yup - once this happens, you also get to play the bonus game of: what component in the engine bay is affected + more wet than the others. Its not a fun game.
I once asked Scotty in the comments of a video how thousands of detail shops can clean a dozen or so engine bays a week and not go under from ruining so many engines. I asked him in the same thread how so many car dealerships clean the engine bay of every trade-in and not have a problem. He never replied. He is not very good at admitting when he is wrong.
@@JimmieHamilton-x5k Scotty also says cars are perfectly engineered as if tuner shops can't make improvements with intakes and tuning. Everything must be taken with a grain of salt. Almost all, (if not all), are designed to be water-tight, though, through time and cycles of hot and cold, that seal can deteriorate due to plasics becoming brittle by drying and breaking down.
Use a pressure washer from 3 feet away. You essentially create a uniform mist that has the power of a summer rain shower but not that of a power washer. Once you’ve done the soapy scrubbing simply shower the engine clean. The point of a power washer is to mechanically remove dirt you don’t wish to manually scrub with a soap and brush.
i legit see so many detailing companies pressure washing engine bays when i’ve seen literally every mechanic and car guy say to NEVER power wash an engine bay💀
It's ok to use pressure washer but not in all cars coz some cars computer comes in engine bay and most are inside the car under the steering so an example BMW will die with pressure washer unless u know its place and covered or avoid spraying at that area so u need to be expert in cars to know which cars are ok to use pressure washer in engine bay and which are not ok
Dont spray high-pressure water around the alternator or fuse box. Use a regular garden hose sprayer from a distance on shower mode, and you'll be good.
The alternator has all exposed wiring smh. The battery may have exposed wires going to the terminals. Either way, the risk outweighs any potential reward. Especially when there's sooooo many other SAFER ways to clean the engine bay and hood
As much as I wanna do this I can’t risk it. My car is paid off and I need it for another 5 years. Most I do is use compressed air to blow away dirt and dust few times per year.
Never clean the engine bay with water, last mechanic destroyed my alternator and my Ac compressor ,meaning i had to dismantle everything again because he wanted everything to be clean!! Better to use 10-15 brake cleaner cans than dealing with issues later!!
Make sure you all cover the oil cover. So no water can seep in but I approve this video. You don't need any plastic shine if done right it will look new when clean. If the car is from the 90 or 80 it's a extra touch that might be needed
It’s crazy how many engine bay detail videos I’ve seen on yt and everyone says the same shit. The one thing I will agree with everyone else is that he didn’t cover up the alternator at the very least. Everything else was fine. I am a detailer as well and have done this service several times too. Even on my cars and I am yet to see a light on my dash or a weird sound. Unless you spray too close into some sensitive electricals or down an exposed intake then yeah you’ll have lots of problems. But this guy did a good job even though he did use a pressure washer it’s okay.
I'd like to add another varible to this firestorm of comments about pressure washing. I have read all of the comments but I'd like to add that if the car's critical electronic/electrical components are designed well, meaning that have good seals, drainage and various other techniques, the vehicle will be fine. I've pressure washed many car engines over the years and never had the issues described here. Sure cheaper , older cars may get into trouble with water in the wrong area, but those cars, well are, you know, junk in the first place. I agree that good technique and not just soaking the engine bay is probably good advice. I'm outt here.
I’m old enough to remember cars from the 60s & 70s with distributors. Those were notorious for getting wet and disabling the vehicle until it dried out. Those days are long gone.

@jaygambino5481 When driving in the rain, for many cars, rain will pass through the grille, through the fan and the radiator, and get the engine wet. Also, some water will splash from underneath that the wheel wells don't catch. Check your engine bay the next time you drive in hard rain. The engine will probably be wet, mine always is and has been since 2011 and no problems.
