Hey Dave, hope all is well in Townsville. When I bottom fish for reds and Nannie’s I like to keep the engine on in reverse so I can stay vertically straight up and down with my baits to keep up with the current/drift. It allows me to fish 3 lines down with minimal tangles and I can cover ground at the same time. Tight lines mate.
Wicked footage Johnny that is the best of both worlds out on the reef mate. How many Ks out there ? Did you do it in a day mate you must have been up early
Thanks Richard. Yeah we did it all in a day. We usually leave the ramp around 5am and we were back by 6pm. It’s a full day but definitely possible to fish and spear. Just need to tune it with the tides. We travel between 70-100km out depending which reef. 😀

love the videos. How or what do you do to return fish that have trauma from bringing them up from the deep
Cheers Lindsay. We pop their swim bladder and release them into the water with pressure going back down. Some of the fish, don’t survive and some make it down unharmed. It’s a tricky one that all fisherman have a challenge with 😀

What a cracker day johnny 👌 the 6 elements all lined up for one amazing day out on the water 👍 I started watching Josh and larissa when they were about 100 subs in and love thier content too mate being so raw and down to earth it's fantastic viewing 🎣👌 mint video as always johnny ps I don't think I've ever seen or heard Josh make some of noises hooked up before ha ha ha 😂

What guns do you like to use? as I just considering getting into spearfishing so I need to decide what I look for in the gun I choose for shore and reef diving

I’m still new to Spearfishing myself so probably can’t give the best advice, but I’m using a 1100mm Rob Allen Couta with a single band for spearing fish. My cray gun is a 600mm Picasso. Both are fairly entry level guns.

@@johnnychowjc I am just getting back into it after 30 years out, I currently have a Bertram 20 which I have to put another stern drive in but we are having our Property resumed in Brisbane and moving to a Farm in South Kolan where I intend to go to a 26 Caribbean sport fisherman flybridge and then kit it out the way I have dreamed of, But as I said to you I have not worken up from the Dream so with your help I am still holucinating a little more over some of the options LMAO but being a serious fisherman like you are you get what I mean HAHAHAHAHAHA

Hi Mark, sounds like a fun trip you goh planned. Yeah, that setup you got will definitely do the job. The humble Saragossa has a lot of grunt and I have first hand seen plenty of quality fish onboard using it. 😀

I am in the market to purchase a jig rod for eggbeater, the boys were using white rods ... is it possible to tell me their setups for the reds you were catching. I have 3 different reels I can use. I have a Daiwa BG MQ -10k Saragossa SW 14k and a Stradic 6XG
They are all egg beaters and I dont want to invest in another overhead rod and reel. So I am after a rod to be able to catch the nannys and reds and other deep water reefs. I will be coming up to Airlie for a fish in Early Sept and staying at Talbots place. Would love to meet you and have a fish with you if time permits.
Hi Sinan, I personally like using spin reels myself as you can probably guess. The Saragossa you have will be more than adequate to reel in 95% of the fish you will hook on the reef. I would match it up with a shimano terez 40-80lb rod 7”2 in length. It’s got enough grunt to land big fish but still sensitive enough in the tip to feel any subtle bites from reds. Talbot is a top bloke and knows his stuff. I’m sure you will have a great trip. Tight lines mate. 😀
