    I think what makes this series so effective is the emphasis on the victim's confusion and discomfort. Halfway into the video the camera zooms in so close we can barely see the man anymore and I think that conveys her sense of isolation and helplessness perfectly. Like, no, this isn't a sexy situation, one of the parties is scared and confused and it's not okay to do stuff like this.
    These videos are terrific and I hope lots of people end up seeing them.

      I also really like how you can tell how the women are trying to keep the situation balanced. They're trying not to inflame the situation or make a big deal out of it, they're trying to laugh it off and hoping it just stops if they're nice enough. It's something I know I've done many times, though not in sexual harassment situations

      Women just need to learn their place. Us men go through a lot of pressure becoming successful and exceptional members of society. We are entitled to any woman we desire. It’s just human nature. Like seriously! Just be quite and take it. You’ll learn to like it.

    dude the silence is so powerful.. i like how they dont add cheesy music that forces you to have a certain emotional reaction to it, the silence is enough. It really shows how scared, confused, and almost like she's so shocked that she's at a loss for words. great job cosmo. but i feel that even though not as many men get sexually harassed as women do, i think it's something that needs recognition so men can feel comfortable to file a complaint or to admit to someone that they are being sexually harassed.

    It's so sad that in all these videos the women have to try and act as if everything is normal. Most men have no idea how common harassment is for women.

    • @AndersRosendalBJJ
      @AndersRosendalBJJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They _have to_?
      Maybe they have to turn on a mic or phone and record what happens, so the guy gets his punishment.
      "Most men have no idea how common harassment is for women."
      Maybe because women like you think women have to act like everything is normal instead of reporting it?

    • @georginaaful
      @georginaaful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Or maybe they don't report it bc a lot of work places will do nothing about it, or even shame the woman for reporting it in the first place. I suggest you take a look at the TUC report on harassment if that's your point of view.

      I suggest another ruote, but it's a free world. Do whatever you want.
      Just don't cry if nothing changes because you don't try to change things.

    • @georginaaful
      @georginaaful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Anders Rosendal I hate to break it to you, but the victims of sexual harassment in the workplace don't leave it unreported bc they think it won't get dealt with properly, but bc in the majority of cases when it is reported, it isn't dealt with satisfactorily.
      Out of the victims who reported their harassment in the U.K. 70% said there was no change in the way they were treated, 16% said they were treated worse and 10% said they were treated better.
      28% who didn't report did so bc they believed there would be a negative impact on their work relationships. 24% said they didn't bc they believed they wouldn't be taken seriously. 20% bc they felt too embarrassed to report it. These feelings don't come out of nowhere - to suggest they do is to essentialise victims of abuse as overdramatic and pathetic. While it is incredibly sad that people feel like they can't report it, these decisions are made in full awareness of the highly possible consequences of reporting.
      The problem is not the victim. The problem is a typical workplace environment that does not prioritise workplace harassment and a consensus that the people who claim sexual harassment are liars, troublemakers or overdramatic.
      There is no leeway for victim blaming here.

That moment...that moment when everything changes in the room. Wow. While they are hard to watch, and probably harder for some women, who may have had to deal with these kinds of situations throughout their entire life. I have to say that these video shorts are well done and well acted. Thank you David Schwimmer for doing this and for painting such a too-real picture of this situation.

    It's so heartbreaking, on top of all the other feelings that occur when watching these, to see the emphasis on how most of these men having this "gentle, sensitive, nice man" approach. It makes my stomach hurt because they are the exact opposite of that, obviously, yet they are trying to convey that they are somehow being "oh-so-considerate" while of course they are actually being incredibly abusive and underhanded. This gives some kind of "automatic out" in their minds, I think, so that they can convince themselves or others that they are doing nothing wrong and, *key element*, that the WOMAN is the one "overreacting" if she has a response he doesn't like. Not that HE was the one doing anything crass or wrong. Barf.

    Now they need to follow this up with examples of effective ways that women have responded to situations like these. • @MissyRose94
      @MissyRose94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jake Stanley Me deciding I want to look cute or even sexy doesn't give you the right to force sexual attention on me, or any woman. If a woman isn't responding positively, and you continue, it's fucking harrasment, not flirting. There's a huge difference between being shy and being so unbearably uncomfortable you can't even think straight. Women don't dress up for men all the time. Not even half the time. We like dress up for ourselves, so we can feel good and confident. That doesn't make us public property.

    • @MissyRose94
      @MissyRose94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake Stanley If we worked together you would have a rape conviction by now. I'm not the stay silent type. At no point am I, or any other woman, public property. Because I'm not property at all, I'm a fucking person. I'm going to weat whatever the fuck I feel comfortable in and if you don't like the fact that there are women in the world that you can't fucking have, maybe you should quit your job. Just because you like the way someone looks doesn't mean you get to do whatever you want with them. The only man I ever dress up for is my husband. Otherwise, what I wear and how I do my hair/makeup is for ME. It's not an invitation for you or any one else to touch me. In fact, doing so would be a great way to get your dick twisted off on top of the harassment charges I would immediately file.

    I have seen a lot of wrong comments like people blaming men only. I know that this also happens to men but this is from a women magazine and so it is normal they are focused on women. I just thinks these videos shows that it can be anyone, even someone that seems well-educated and respectful that harasses you. I just don't get why teatchers don't show this to students while their high school or middle school years, knowing that the firs time i got harrassed i was 14... and the boy was also 14, and he was thinking he was doing it right

    It's interesting how 4 of the 5 scenarios are situations that are commonly represented in... porn. That's because, even though fictional, these images manage to distort the idea of how sexuality is supposed to look like. In a way, what you're able to fantasize is corelated and proportional to what you think is OK to do. The males in these videos they all have a malfunctioning perception of what conduces to sexual arousal, but in their own minds it's OK, because they've been encouraged to fantasize about such scenarios. Keep in mind that this doesn't exonerate them, but points to a cause.
    That of course can't be the only factor, we could also consider how technology has contributed to distort intimacy. People now interact much more through phone screens than through real contact. This leads to intimacy (meaning just a private moment with another human being) becoming much more scarce than in the past and loneliness more common... therefore when the moment comes, we don't have enough reference points to adress it correctly, (other than...say hormonal state for the men in these videos). This applies to sexuel harassment as much as it does to social anxiety or awkwardness. We must stop pointing out symptoms and start adressing underlying causes.

    • @baandersson2737
      @baandersson2737 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say the biggest contributing factor to these situations that is apparent in the videos is the women being alone and lower in hierarchy. The men use the isolation and the fact that they could hurt the womens' careers (and/or hurt them physically) to their advantage to try and get something out of them, and the women are aware that retaliation would likely only hurt their own future. In this case I would say it is the porn imitating those real life situations, as this is no where near a new phenomenon.

    • @BBMc107
      @BBMc107 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Porn exists to reinforce a man’s fantasy. Not the other way around. The fantasy came first and with practice becomes abuse. Porn allows those types to justify their abuse as “she wanted it”. They are well aware that she did not. The women mention boyfriends, and husbands in an effort to belay the behavior by prior claim to themselves by another man. That is demeaning and still does not work. They look away, they don’t make eye contact. None of the come hither signals exist here from the porn world and the men keep pressing and trying different tactics to get those effects.

    These videos are powerful and all too familiar. (Some of the scripts caused me to have chills remembering when almost exactly the same words were used with me). I am passing them along to my older friends (who all remember their own tales of such harassment) and to my young friends. I read recently that some of them think such scenarios will never happen to them in this age of "higher consciousness" and equality. I wish that were true. I am hoping they don't have to feel the shame and humiliation and often downright fear shown on the faces of the women in these videos. Since I am raising a 6-year-old girl, I want to make sure to pass these videos around for all our daughters. Suggestion to the videographers/writers: Remake the same videos, same cast, same scenes and, this time, have the writers show how the women could (now) handle their harassers. What could they say and do to stop these men from going any further.? I think it would be useful to show young women what they could do and say--to give them tools for when they find themselves paralyzed or shocked or sickened. I am not yet convinced the women would not (still) lose their job or be disbelieved or ill-treated, but, having spoken up and taken action, they can at least leave with their head held high and avoid the corrosive shame and guilt too many of them feel after such harassment has been foisted upon them. Give them the words and I'm hoping many fewer of them will ever need to use them..

    If you would not use these inappropriate behaviors on someone of the same sex (or other sex if homosexual) , then the actions are clearly wrong. That is why it is harrassment. A heterosexual man would not stroke another man’s hair, touch his thigh, feel his breast, kiss him and then apologize and attempt to kiss him again, show his erect penis and ask for a look. It is not rocket science. If you would not do this to a casual aquaintance of your non-sexual gender preference, then STOP!!!!

    I get that this is Cosmo, and that this primarily happens to women, but it certainly happens to men too and it's far less reported because we're constantly bombarding women with stuff like this so that they speak up (which is great, don't get me wrong) but very rarely is content like this created for men, or if it is it's more, "SWEEET! MY BOSS WANTS TO SEXUALLY HARASS ME! This campaign is specifically designed to realistically portray the type of sexual harassment women regularly face. Men hold more power in society, and women are socialized to be polite and not speak out. These situations highlight the power dynamic and how it can be exploited, and women are the victims. The campaign is better explained here: hellogiggles.com/short-videos-brought-us-david-schwimmer-depict-sexual-harassment-looks-like-real-life/
      Men can and do face sexual harassment, but they face different challenges with it.

    • @mirablossom2672

      It's a campaign done with a women's magazine to show realistic sexual harassment that women face. Of course men also experience sexual harassment, but it shouldn't be surprising that a women's magazine focuses their campaign on the struggles of women. Not to mention that more than 3 out of 4 of those facing sexual harassment are women. That's not to diminish the sexual harassment that men face, but it is less common and not the focus of the campaign.
