Wow that was magic! So many happy memories of reading the early days of EVO. Thank you team, for this podcast and for making such an important and wonderful piece of history back in the day. This was very special.
I'm glad you all acknowledged they really were the glory days and simultaneously appreciated it as such too. Validates what i love about cars of that era. Cheers!
For me Evo changed car magazines for the better. And youtube tests too. What a distinguished gathering of some of THE most respected motoring journalists whose car tests are always authoritative and interesting. Harry's recent re-testing of an Alpine on Harry's Garage youtube encouraged me to buy one.
Blagged an interview with John not long after Evo moved to Wollaston, if I recall correctly. Was woefully ill-equipped, spilled my cup of tea and went to university instead afterwards. Think that job went to Jethro Bovingdon, which was probably for the best. I ended up in technology journalism instead, but always enjoyed reading Evo and learned a lot from the interview experience. I don't often bother with new cars nowadays, but do enjoy Harry's channel and occasional Evo video. Thank you guys for having the courage to create Evo and some fabulous content over the years. Also thankful for Henry Catchpole - a true gem of a find - and occasionally wonder what happened to earlier projects like the Ford Capri, super-light Caterham etc.
What a fascinating interview, more of this please! I clearly recall my first "Evo" moment. I was in the Kingston Upon Thames WH Smiths and that Evo cover jumped out at me and I had to have it. Having religiously bought Car, Fast Lane, Performance Car, Autocar, Motor, the occasional Automibile (US).....I was a car magazine addict and your were my latest and greatest fix! Thank you for taking the risk and producing such a brilliant magazine!
I used to live just around the corner from Peter Tomlinson: seeing the L555EVO Lotus on his drive gave it away! Remember seeing this new-fangled magazine called Evo on the shelves of the Bar Hill Tescos and couldn't quite believe how crazy packed that first edition was. You guys missed a beat, though: the first issue wasn't 1, or 01, but you numbered it 001. That sent a message! Great to reminisce and hear about the behind-the-scenes leading up to the launch
Absolutely lovely trip down memory lane chaps. Thanks so very much for the wonderful magazines, the beautiful photographs and eloquent words. Truly foundational.
Great to hear the tales of the first issue. I still remember the excitement of seeing it on the shelf in my local newsagent and finding all the familiar names on the editorial page. Still subscribed 25 years on!
Well that was a very pleasant and unexpected surprise! Have heard the evo birth story a few times from individuals but so lovely to hear it from all 4 of you round the same table. Great stuff!
Great stuff. I was a PC subscriber for years. When it shut down and my subscription became a Car sub, I was so upset I wrote an actual letter, full of vitriolic comparisons between PC and Car. Amazing how quickly evo came to our rescue.
Absolutely fascinating from the icons of motoring journalists who not surprisingly produced the most iconic of motoring magazines in its day. Never surpassed. I have Edition 1, it's a treasure!
I've never read an EVO magazine as I'm a bike man but I'm interested to hear about Harrys past life. Very interesting chat and you guys obviously have many years worth of anecdotes to amuse us with. It's like your starting out again and Harry is back on board!
I stumbled upon this podcast by accident when checking to see the latest edition of Harry’s Garage. I am pleased I did. Learning about the founding of Evo is fascinating. I look forward to how it progressed and the key milestones as it grew in importance to its readership. Good luck with the podcasts.
This podcast has brought back so many memories for me and also has put some background and content to the launch of EVO. I was working for the reprographic company at the time who was dealing with EMAP and worked on PC, MAX POWER, REVS, CLASSIC CAR WEEKLY, CLASSIC CAR. I remember the news about PC ending, but then within weeks JB walking through the door with a 'secret project' which we had to turn round quickly. Out of all the motoring magazines we did EVO was the one that I look forward to working on. Think I managed to work on 100 or so issues including 'specials' before moving on to pastures new. It's great to see you guys all back in one room and chatting about the good old days. JONAH
Hi guys,it was my late father who like many others got me into bikes and cars ,a real petrolhead ,and it was him that bought me my first car magazine, called The Car ,every single one and the binders loved it decorated my bedroom walls with it
It’s about time! Well done… The Evo story is one I’m very familiar with yet never tire of hearing about it again. Immediately subscribed and already looking forward to the next instalment. 👍🏁
Quality insight into the early days of what has been an epic magazine for me, I recall I picked up my first copy of EVO in 2005 in Australia as a 15 year old and I’ve been grabbing a copy whenever I can since! It’s always been about the writers and the writing (yeah plus mega photography) which separated EVO from the rest, despite subscribing digitally for years I will still buy a printed copy whenever I can and it tends to stay around as I feel it’s a lasting read and I will totally pick up old copies for a re-read down the line for the proper drives and stories. Keep it up guys, I’m proud to have a 5 star rated car in the garage and value all the learning and evaluations, a proper car mag for the enthusiast 👌
Harry is just someone you would love to sit next to on a long flight. (Though I doubt he'd be in the back with me!!). Great podcast EVO. Look forward to many more....
Thanks to all of you for sharing! He who dares! Bravo 🙌❤I remember Evo.. it was cool and you got the Zeitgeist with the name.AND visually it was superb artwork, photography and clean crisp design. evo with a small E was inspired
The original EVO team I was an Addict to this right from day One.. 1️⃣ such a shame how everything has gone since then. I am pleased I was part of this era of cars.. as a consumer. ❤
Ok hold on! I was a consumer as well. Reading EVO as a kid, falling in love with (all kinds of) cars! Before the internet, before TH-cam, the word in automobilia was written by EVO magazine. And I adore Harry (and the group) for growing the love of cars. In fact I started my TH-cam channel on cars because of Harry’s Garage ❤🏁
I loved Performance Car magazine. Was my daily read and absolute car read where ever I was as I traveled a lot in those days. I then became an absolute EVO reader from the very beginning, loved the theme and the dreams.
Guys loved that. Having the balls to go for it but also having the confidence in the team that this will work. I think all the stars must have aligned for you. Seat of the pants stuck regarding finance and actually using the name. You must look back with great pride. The world seems a different place now to try the same again.
Evo was a massive and formative part of my teenage and older years. Suddenly having a mag full of performance cars when before I'd made do with autocar and other more prosaic copies. Early single digit editions like 350vs996, 993 GT(2) vs Viper GTS-R, launch of Maserati 3200GT, first eCoty.. All fond memories for me. The writing was (and is still) fantastic, particular from the gents on this episode (I'd always be slightly disappointed when it was someone else..) Also wondering what has become of John's Capri project, Dickie's Caterham (and his 964 RS?)?
Excellent seeing and listening to you all. I have followed you since Performance Car days, taking part in a number of fancy dress treasure hunts, they were fun! Enjoy the writing style as well as the better quality of production as Harry discussed. Look forward to more insights, maybe some of the stories about certain tests that maybe didn't go to plan or when the Italian police compounded the cars!! Also thoughts on where the industry is going, e-fuels etc. Keep up the good work.
I remember buying issue 001 of Evo and then missing a couple here and there before realising I needed to buy it monthly. Eventually I bought the missing back issues and I have around 200 paper copies in my loft before switching to digital. It must be very tough now with so many TH-camrs getting to new launches etc but nothing beats the quality of the write ups and photos in Evo. I’ve bought all of my cars due to Evo and used the various articles to make final decisions - I’m currently on my 4th 911 (991.2 GT3) which I daily use. This channel will be great for Evo and I’m excited to see more. I’ve also been enjoying Harry’s Garage since he started the channel. Wishing you guys continued success 😎👍 Cheers!
I started reading Evo in the 90s and the writing, photography, and format blew away US magazines. It was quite expensive to obtain in the US but so worth it.
An interesting hours chat as an ex loyal Performance Car subscriber who then moved straight to Evo Magazine. Both great magazines Evo was more high end. Times change and I now get my car fix from TH-cam and Harry's Garage and Iain Tyrrells classic workshop...... 👌
Performance car was excellent and had Richard Porter on the back pages for Sniff petrol. EVO I subscribed too from the beginning, and I'm 99.9% sure RM and RB had to work for Car for a few months as well as I remember there were articles from both in CAR magazine. I also think there is an area of media today missing with a test where the same car is tested and reported in video format with the different views of each tester. We use to get that in EVO especially car of the year, but we don't see it in video format
Great podcast. I bought issue one then subscribed and still have every issue. My car choices have also been shaped by EVO, reading your great stories and then wanting to own your five star cars.
A very enjoyable hour or so. I have been a subscriber since issue 1 and still have every single copy and even though I moved to Florida in 2008 I brought the collection with me much to the wife's disgust because I also brought every issue of Performance Car and Fast Lane with me! I fondly remember a very enjoyable day at Donnington Park where John was giving Hot Laps in an Evo 8 or 9 and Dickie was driving a Scooby Doo. Both cooked their tyres in the morning and the Evo was down to the threads. How the car was driven home again probably shouldn't be asked. A Prodrive Scooby was brought into action in the afternoon. A very young Jethro Bovingdon was also there giving Hot Laps in the Evo MIni Cooper. Keep up the good work guys.
Remember cancelling my subscription to Top Gear magazine because it was so dull, and started reading Peformance Bike, and thinking that there should be a car magazine that could match it. Then the first issue of Evo came out, which was a revelation.
I remember reading performance car from about 1990 - I would read it instead of revising for GCSEs along with fast lane, car and motorsport. I remember being gutted when it was stopped. It carried on for a bit in car but in name only if I remember. A few months after it stopped, I was working in all days when I was at uni - I’d sort the papers for the paper rounds and help sort the stock delivery with the manager - always ending up doing more hours than I shad promised, because other staff due to work had hangovers. I happened to be browsing the mags on my break in the September / October and found the first issue of EVO - I recognised the editorial team, bought it an£ never looked back. Twenty five years later, still reading and it’s still as good as ever.
Very happy to see evo increase their online presence, which I had been feeding back to Matt O’Malley. I’m a long time subscriber here in AUS and great to see more content!
Best issue for me was 200th, with the mega test of The Best Car you’ve ever driven. I keep coming back to it, because the cars on it really are the “best of the best” 😎
Evo remains the best car magazine on sale today. I've been a subscriber since 1999. The only unfortunate thing is that there's fewer affordable sports cars these days, so the content has to be filled with very expensive cars.
Know the story but good to see it recounted. Was a Performance Car reader then saw a copy of issue 1 on the bar in the Nags Head, presumably left by someone from the office. Managed to pick up a copy from Smiths in MK then subscribed from issue 2. On that, it took a while to come in the post so had bought a copy by time it did
Great podcast. I loved Performance Car and one very happy memories was doing one of the treasure hunts in northern France (was there more than one?) I was in a Westfield and I think John kindly carried the doors in his car as the weather was so good. It’s a long time ago now but I do remember one clues being count the slats on a bridge which was obviously very easy for me and everyone else seemed to be in Ferraris and a Pantera. Happy memories.
Very interesting video. Couldn’t agree more that people are not committed to their cars any more due to leasing instead of buying. You can flip flop between brands and never have any brand loyalty.
I vividly remember reading the 288, F40, F50, Enzo ‘test’ in the bath after a game of rugby. Can’t remember half my teammates, do remember that article!
Looked at this because I follow Harry's channel, no clue who the others were before two were introduced, would've been helpful for Stuart to introduce himself.
Dickie hits the nail on the head about car ownership and the market these days compared to the good old days. Finance deals mean manufacturers can tempt buyers with shiny shit rather than cars that people would aspire to own on an emotional level because the cars were full of character, desirable and still attainable to normal folk.
Thanks for the mention guys! But I actually brought my Skyline GT-R to the evening launch party at the Sports Cafe, not the Chris Evans breakfast show. Great podcast, looking forward to more. But why isn’t it on the main Evo channel?
Gosh I wish I could get EVO Down Under here in NZ! What a neat story of you all getting it launched then making it fly. Interestingly as I was set to watch this I Googled EVO and say CARWOW had bought the main publisher that produces it! Are old EVO mags available to be bought/viewed online somewhere??
Pure nostalgia. Subscriber from the very first issue. But I must say, EVO is not the same (ie as good) as it used to be. When I read a test, I want to feel like I am sitting next to you guys and feel how the car behaves. I want to drift away with you guys along these roads while sitting in my chair reading about it all. And I miss that sometimes in the latest editions. Maybe it's the cars, maybe it's the authors, but I want (my friends at) EVO back! Maybe include the odd 'classic car' from the good old days, like Dickie said they give a richer experience than the modern stuff, more what EVO is all about. Inspire us to get the right cars (from yesteryear) and enjoy those instead of leasing the next new performance car.
Now also available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Goodpods and Pocket Casts!
An hour+ of harry talking, can't wait 🎉
Wow that was magic! So many happy memories of reading the early days of EVO. Thank you team, for this podcast and for making such an important and wonderful piece of history back in the day. This was very special.
Thank you so much for finally deciding to do a podcast. As an avid EVO customer, I am very excited about future episodes.
I'm glad you all acknowledged they really were the glory days and simultaneously appreciated it as such too. Validates what i love about cars of that era. Cheers!

This is the podcast we have all been waiting for great work EVO, can't wait for new episodes and stories you have to tell. 🤟🤟🤩🤩😍😍

Another great addition to the current crop of automotive podcasts - well done guys. Excited to see how things progress.
Great to hear the tales of the first issue. I still remember the excitement of seeing it on the shelf in my local newsagent and finding all the familiar names on the editorial page. Still subscribed 25 years on!

Fascinating stuff. Switched from PC to Evo and been here since issue 1, which takes pride of place in library. Permasub :)
Absolutely fascinating from the icons of motoring journalists who not surprisingly produced the most iconic of motoring magazines in its day. Never surpassed. I have Edition 1, it's a treasure!

It’s about time! Well done… The Evo story is one I’m very familiar with yet never tire of hearing about it again.

Nice to see you all Harry, Dickie and John. Rgds Paul T (2000 Targa F lhd GT3 stalwart)
Them pulling out the actual list of names they were shortlisting for the potential name of the magazine is soooo dope! Love to see it!
Good luck boys, a great start and clever including Harry.
Can't wait for subsequent episodes.
Certainly this opening edition well upto your mag!
Harry is just someone you would love to sit next to on a long flight.
(Though I doubt he'd be in the back with me!!).

Finally along with The Intercooler a decent car podcast!
Best car magazine ever, have all of them for the last 10 years or more.

Really excellent! Very, very enjoyable, made me realise I've spent 25 years reading EVO!
Great stuff lads. The biggest thing was the 'brand'. evo was such a good name and so bold on the cover. Fascinating chat.
Great podcast love the story of how Evo was born

Still have the first issues to this day & loved every new edition. THANKYOU for EVO - the best car mag. on the planet :-)
.. It was the photography and clean presentation that attracted me to the magazine 📷
Brilliant podcast guys loved ❤❤it
This was some good viewing/listening, Thank you. have subbed as well.
Evo magazine & classic&sports car magazine are the best magazine in the world in this era based on most enthusiast opinion
My favourite youtuber Harry Metatarsal
Great job guys . We used to get these in South Africa . 🇿🇦. Very expensive so only glanced through in the news agents . 😢
Excellent as an Avid Evo Reader I am delighted to see a Podcast (From Australia)
Remember cancelling my subscription to Top Gear magazine because it was so dull, and started reading Peformance Bike, and thinking that there should be a car magazine that could match it. Then the first issue of Evo came out, which was a revelation.
It's just wow!! To this podcast!
Loving this, chaps. Cracking.
Loved that. Thanks all around. 😊
Like the mag, this has come along at the right time with the right people with a great black whole created by collecting cars podcast
Very enjoyable podcast.
this is brilliant content
Great insight to how it all began
Very happy to see evo increase their online presence, which I had been feeding back to Matt O’Malley. I’m a long time subscriber here in AUS and great to see more content!
YESSSSSSS the legends on pod.❤
Loved it, great chat 😃👍
Best issue for me was 200th, with the mega test of The Best Car you’ve ever driven. I keep coming back to it, because the cars on it really are the “best of the best” 😎
Evo remains the best car magazine on sale today. I've been a subscriber since 1999. The only unfortunate thing is that there's fewer affordable sports cars these days, so the content has to be filled with very expensive cars.
I saw the first edition on a corner shop shelf with that white Porsche GT1 on the shelf and I was sold....
Great to hear about the inception of Evo!
Liked instantly
Know the story but good to see it recounted.
Was a Performance Car reader then saw a copy of issue 1 on the bar in the Nags Head, presumably left by someone from the office. Managed to pick up a copy from Smiths in MK then subscribed from issue 2.
On that, it took a while to come in the post so had bought a copy by time it did
Evo was excellent. Great automotive journalism. Much better than the current fanboi influencer scene having to release daily promotional clickbait.
Good stuff!
Very interesting video. Couldn’t agree more that people are not committed to their cars any more due to leasing instead of buying. You can flip flop between brands and never have any brand loyalty.
Very interesting video, i always wondered how a farmer helped set up one of the most storied car magazines, and now i know
I used to get performance car always and was sad to see it go but with the same people in evo I knew it hadn't died. Great magazine and keep it up.
Excellent
Evo - amazing machine and years later - a podcast
For me,it was the quality of the photography in the early editions that caught my eye and wallet.
Dickie hits the nail on the head about car ownership and the market these days compared to the good old days. Finance deals mean manufacturers can tempt buyers with shiny shit rather than cars that people would aspire to own on an emotional level because the cars were full of character, desirable and still attainable to normal folk.
