I don’t agree, Jep. These are top-of-the-pile globally renowned car guys who have the knowledge and experience to write for the most respected auto mag in the world. That level of knowledge and experience is baked in and their low key discussions are hugely interesting.

In 1984/5 i bought my first car a 1972 MGB roadster in Havest gold .. it cost me £1500 and i was earning at my first job in the city about £5000/year .. i went to the bank to ask for a loan for the full amount telling the bank manager that it was for a more expensive rubber bumper MGB and i was to pay the difference out of savings which were at another non existant bank. The manager soon discovered i was not telling the truth but as he was a MG enthusiast and owner i got the loan anyway.. now 40 years later i have some exotic italian classics in the garage but thankfully no loans... however i will never forget my first love OLP 572L

I am planning to buy my first EVO car. What would you recommend? Needs to fit a small family, reasonable to run, ULEZ compliant and have steering/handling that would make a 997 proud. I drove a Carrera, and it blew me away. My budget is £5000. However, I'm willing to stretch it for the right car.

My first Evo car was a 2.0GL Mk 1 Cavalier. Not much power but I learned to slide it about when the roads were wet. My next was a Renault 5GT Turbo I had amazingly at only 23 as a company car and I loved it.

Heroes. My life was made better by these guys, the grey envelope hitting the doormat was a highlight of every month. I wasn't able to afford the expensive stuff but still enjoyed reading about it, and I was encouraged to buy the cheap stuff (that I couldn't afford either) like a Clio Trophy back in 2006, which I drove 300 miles from Sussex to hunt down the EVO triangle in Snowdonia. I have every issue from 001 to into the 200s but cancelled my subscription when EVs and SUVs took over. Not EVOs fault, just the way the market has gone and now, just like music, my car tastes are stuck in the past. I feel sorry for car journalists now, they get the occasional GMA T-50 or Singer but have to find positive things to say about dreary bloated milkfloats the rest of the time. A car review in another 25 years (or more probably 5) will be "the automated driving software was programmed with help from Lotus and is really rather good".

First evo car was my first car and had bizarrely cheap insurance given its pretty good performance for the 90s. It was 1993 at it was an ‘86 Reliant Scimitar SS1800ti. Handled well too, right up until it went backwards off a round about with a mid-bend boost incident, happy days.

SO happy to see used cars having a renaissance now that EVs have been evidenced as not a panacea. They're fantastic for runarounds for urban rich people - but other vehicle types are better suited for other purposes - such as having fun. Difficult for manufacturers to handle "just another segment" when it requires a ground-up design (e.g. fewer fluids and pipes etc) but they'll figure it out. Pro tip manufacturers: LET THE ENGINEERS ENGINEER - THEY'LL SORT IT! Viva la Viva! (Vauxhall Viva presumably)

My first which I massively regret selling was a fairly ropey, red Integra Type-R (DC2) for £5k back in about 2009. It needed a respray and burnt far too much oil and I got pressured into selling it for £2.5k 2-3 years later but I'd love another one of these now.

I would take a gen 3 MR2 over any MX5... yet MR2s are so cheap right now, it's crazy, they're being scrapped by the dozen. I have a 3.0 V6 in mine... sounds great, does 0-60 in 5, has that lovely 'dive for the apex just by moving your wrists' mid-engined handling. Dicky is spot on, it's a car you take time to learn, it doesn't give up all its secrets in the first 5 minutes.
