    Interrupted by Data...and Geordi's beard 😆😆
There's a funny behind the scene's outtake about this.
Brent: Geordi, didn't you have a beard?
Le Var: Yeah, but the producers didn't like it
    *both shrug*

I'm in the group that remembers this one fondly. What still stands out is when Worf decides this might be fun and seeing Troi put her boots up with a smoke.

It took me until the second viewing to realize that the reason Worf was giving himself so much work at the beginning of the episode was so he can avoid going on the holodeck. It’s too bad he felt that way as a father.

I honestly don't get why they keep the holodeck around if it regularly malfunctions with potentially lethal consequences. It's the most questionable use of leisure technology outside of Jurassic Park.

I love this episode for the western aspect, but I agree the episode should’ve been more of Worf and Alexander finding common ground.
I keep thinking of the “Yankee Liar” scene in “Shane”, and wondering how much better this episode would’ve been if Worf turned to his Klingon customs and stories of Kahless to motivate the townspeople to his side.
It would also build the ongoing Alexander arc where he finds things in Klingon culture he does like.

"Prove it!" Phenomenal movie. Thing is, by the look of it I don't think Star Trek writers know much or care about Westerns. Nor felt like putting as much thought in this episode as you did.

Mentioning "The standard Jumanji-esque, if we can reach the end of the game the game will end" notion at the end of this review is pretty funny to me. "Jumanji", the film that popularized "Jumanji-esque" concepts (one would assume) came out in 1995. "A Fistful of Datas" came out in 1992.
Really, that whole concept might very well have been popularized with this episode (probably not though as I assume that idea had to have been used before somewhere else), but it certainly wasn't imitating a notion that came out 3 years after the episode aired, at least.

Were these writers under pressure to write quickly like in 60's Dr Who? I get they did not have the internet & resources were taxed, but it's just that you have so many amazing characters in this show but they keep being stunted by austere writing. Terribly sad in a way!

Data's storage capacity is stated as being 100 Petabytes in another episode. I'm not sure if that's enough to serve as a back up drive for the ships computer. I would think not. Anyway, you think they would install a hard kill switch on the damn holodeck after it malfunctioned over and over.

    • @MidlifeCrisisJoe
      @MidlifeCrisisJoe ปีที่แล้ว

I like to think that they did try to do that, but the project got stuck in committee when no one could agree on what the kill switch phrase would be. Since the TNG world apparently runs on some sort of utopian space communism I imagine a lot of projects gets stuck in the bureaucratic phase.

Spot on comment on the season as a whole; "Star Trek Light". This was indeed their "fun/light" season. I don't mind the episodes in here, however they weren't nearly as enjoyable as Season 3 or 4.
I agree with the C or could be talked into a C-. It wasn't horrible, just kind of one of those fun episodes, that wasn't quite as fun as it should have.
By the way have you guys thought about putting in some fun end credits such as "Geordi's Beard" at the end?

Nick: I have rewritten the entire episode.
Rob: yeah, that would've been good.
I also like how you referred to Levarr as Geordie's Beard. It was pretty awful. Maybe they were trying to recreate the Beardening, when Riker grew a beard and the series got markedly better.

You forgot to mention Troi warned Worf that the villains in the Old West do not keep their promises, and that's what gave him the idea to construct a defensive force field (as you seem to have a problem recognizing Troi as a meaningful character for this series and generally only enjoy her scenes if she is being hit by an super-strong aliens looking like children)
