- I am pleased to post here an interview that I had with Platinum blog member Kevin Grant, who has recently published a book "What Did Jesus Say About Hell?: A Non-Religious Look at the Facts, and the Love that Shows You how to Soar in Your Spiritual Potential". Kevin and I see eye-to-eye on most of the critical points, and we flesh them out here in the interview. His book strives to reach a different audience from mine, people who would not be inclined to read one of my books but would be open to hearing the views of someone they take to be sympathetic with their religious convictions but wants to provide them with assurance from the Bible itself that they do not need to stand in fear of eternal torment.

Easy to mistake you for a religious Christian when you see “Jesus” in big letters on the cover of your book ;). Maybe should have put the “Non-religious” in subtitle in bigger letters, just sayin. But I was interested enough to start reading it anyway and I am much enjoying it so far.
I think it’s great that you’re opening yourself up and interacting w the audience here. I am just about done w your book. It’s really not what I expected (I mean that in a good way). You cover hell completely pretty early on and there’s a lot of great stuff later. I wish you the best of luck. When is the next book coming??

Kevin Grant here again. Many people have asked so I’ll comment here: I am not religious at all. I am not Christian. That’s not a knock on religion; it’s just not who I am. I believe in God, I call myself spiritual, but “God” is just a vocabulary word after all- the best we can do thus far ;-). I delve into that topic a lot in my writing. When it comes to what Jesus said about hell, I stick strictly to what it says in the Bible, and adhere to Bible scholarship every step of the way. I also cover A Lot more ground than we did in this discussion in the topics I write about. Cheers

For 4 years now I'm following Bart and other scholars like him and I concluded that religious people would come up just anything to justify their narrative. They would make up anything to show that it's their fault and god is punishing them.
@TupacMakaveli1996 it’s not only about religious people who come up with justifications, you have to be neutral and not to follow Bart from your heart! Dr. Ehrman himself will come up with nonsense sometimes to justify his point view and 4years of following him should be more than enough to know his ways of thinking!

There is also the word 'Sheol' in the Old Testament. That is
translated as 'Hell'. But there was no tormenting, it was just some store for souls.
Are you sure it was for souls? Souls are a Plato thing, not a bible thing. We are a body which they believed God breathed into- that breath is the spirit of man. That’s the Old testament belief. No souls.
Not really. Sheol at its core is more closely to a mental state of deep anguish.
Next to that some may say it’s the “grave” (literal pit).
MAYBE post book of Daniel and maybe into the new millennia Jews may have incorporated the kind of “store” hades is for souls and tied it with Sheol,

Bart is equating Gehenna/Jehennama (one word, a noun) with Genat Henan (2 words garden of Henan).
I am curious where he got that from.
I enjoyed Bart's point about prophecy being about 'forth-telling' not 'foretelling'. Metaphysically that is compatible with free will and non-determinism. In that context God's omnisciece is his knowledge of all possible futures but not the actual future because it has not been decided and so hasnt happened yet. That is a message of hope rather than fatalism.

@@kevingrant837 What I like about Bart (and now you) is that you quote actual Bible verses. Most "for-profit" preachers say generic things like, "God loves you." But these "money-seeking" TH-cam preachers don't back it up with a Bible verse. You quoted many Bible verses, and I will look them up (thanks to you). You mentioned you are not as scholarly as Bart, but maybe you are just as scholarly. I appreciate your style and will look for more of your content.
My original comment was written after only 50% of this video had been watched. I often had to rewind, take notes, and then rewind again to see what the "real" point was. It's taken me half a day to watch half of your video. This video is packed with information, and I attribute it to the actual Bible verses you quote. Thank you.
So you can better understand your audience, I share Bart's religious viewpoint. But I listen to and learn from the full spectrum of religious beliefs. Based on the first half of this video, I'm not sure where you fall on the scale, but I suspect you are an orthodox Christian.

It’s interesting how many people have taken me for a religious Christian, or even Apologist, based on this interview, but I am actually not religious at all, much less any sort of preacher, though I don’t say that w any knock on religion intended whatsoever. I believe in God and call myself spiritual, for sure, but as I lay out in chapter two of my book, “God” is just a vocabulary word.
If you share Bart’s religious views, which would really be a non-religious view I suppose, does that mean you’re an atheist? If I remember correctly (and hope I don’t botch this) Bart says of himself: “When it comes to whether I believe in God, I’m an atheist. If you ask me whether I know there’s a God or not, I’m an agnostic.”
I have a series of five lectures I did called “The Psychology of the Spiritual Path” that will be up on my own TH-cam channel tomorrow. They are about 30 minutes each and delve very specifically into Bible verses each time. You might like. I’ve been giving lectures for about six years now and part five was my favorite talk I ever gave.

@@kevingrant837 I'll look for and subscribe to your TH-cam channel. I am an atheist/agnostic like Bart and watch all of Bart's content. But I also watch and read the same amount of orthodox Christian content. I really look forward to yours. I want to know both sides. Sadly, the Bible is extremely hard to understand. That's why there are over 25,000 different denominations over history and throughout the world. From Martin Luther to today. That's a lot of different Biblical interpretations. I'm writing a book, too (even though I'm not qualified). Your video, books, and others are my research. I'm interested in "Why so many Biblical interpretations?" Even when two people disagree on an interpretation, each viewpoint seems valid. I could see the frustration on Bart's face after you quoted Bible verses with "fire" describing hell. I've found this true over scores of debates and interviews. A 2017 Gallop poll says that 76% of Christians don't take the "entire" Bible literally. Why do you suppose God made the Bible so hard to understand? Why did God make the Bible interpretable (if that's a word)? How can someone call themselves a Christian if they don't take the Bible literally? How can a Biblical scholar determine if God was being literal or communicating metaphorically? If the Bible is an instruction book on "life," are metaphors the right choice? You don't see metaphors in other instruction books, such as recipes, textbooks, or "heart transplants."

Where should all the personalities come from when there is no rebirth?
If there is rebirth the concept of hell doesn`t make sense.
Hell is simple, Gehenna is where the garbage goes, its burnt up, destroyed forever. This basically it according to Mark and Matthew, but Luke turns hell into a place of suffering.
People accept Luke because it is in the bible, but I don't think Luke is a legitimate gospel.

Luke is an investigative work, a very late one, one that seems to take alot of creative liberties. I don't think Luke makes for good apologetics, it is very distant from the word it pretends inform about.
If Jesus died for the sins off all people in the past that would mean for all in the future as well without even knowing ❤

It doesn’t. No such thing. That Comes from Plato. The BODY rests till judgement day then the BODY is raised and life comes into it- according to the teachings. This idea about disembodied souls going to God or heaven is not a Christian idea at all. It’s just a tradition that came in via the Greeks and the Catholic Church.

Nothing that Bart has ever written has made him question his faith??? Really??? I don't see how a rational person using reason and logic CANT but question their faith reading Barts work. I was an atheist before I found Bart and his writings have only confirmed my atheism!
Obviously I can’t reply to every comment, but what’s always interesting here is I never stated what my faith was. Most people assume I’m a religious Christian. I’m not. I wrote a comment about that today. I believe in “God” and there’s a lot to what that means, but not what can be stated in a moment. Bart’s books have only ever educated me and helped me to understand Bible scholarship more. Amy time I teach or give a lecture to religious people I recommend Bart’s books. It is one of my deepest beliefs that God and the truth are Never mutually exclusive! To me it’s always been an insane thought that God would expect anyone to turn away from or deny the truth, Or, believe we have to believe things that happened 2,000 years ago that no one can ever know for sure. For ex, Imagining it is an issue of faith to proclaim Jesus walked on water. No one knows or will know. Thanks for the feedback

In the first verses of the Bible, we have the duality heavens and the Earth:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form (TOHU= chaos, disorder), and void (BOHU= uninhabited); and darkness was on the face of the deep (TeHOM =ocean). And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Gen. 1:1-2)
In last verses of the Bible, we have the duality the New Earth and the lake of fire and brimstone:
And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”(Rev. 21:6-8)
In other words, we find again the new “TeHOM” (lake of fire), which is at the same time the place of “the outer darkness”:
Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: (Matt. 25:41)
And will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Matt. 13:42,50)
Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (Matt. 22:13)
Therefore, we have two almost identical situations - one at the beginning of the Bible, the other at the end. If the analogy is complete, then “God’s spirit” will hover over the “lake of fire” as well as it hovered over the “waters” on the Earth, prior to beginning of creation of life on it.
This means that the terrible Hell should actually represent the object of new God’s care and love - new creation.
Bart is always interesting and I think it's really cool that he would spend two hours with a non-scholar but the guy sounds so rehearsed and unspontaneous it's hard to listen to when Bart isn't speaking. He sounds like he's reading from a teleprompter.
I think it would have worked better if the other guy was replaced with text prompts or a robot text to speech app.
If you’d like to actually know the truth- there was no teleprompter - there was one for opening lines in reading off of- and then it broke! After many many hours of prepping, we ended up doing it mostly off the cuff- Sorry you didn’t like but hey at least no teleprompter. There was a quite a bit of spontaneity actually!

I don't have a problem with people using cue cards or a teleprompter so long as it's not obvious but the monotonous tone and lack of inflection is impossible to un hear.
I've never heard of him before this video came up in my feed; apparently it was filmed two years ago video even though this was just posted recently.
It would be interesting to see this guy Kevin speaking spontaneously in an unscripted video; I imagine he must be a reasonably competent TH-camr if he's acquired a decent sized following but the fact that it's super obvious he's reading here makes it a difficult listen.

Hell is the grave where your thoughts parish and this will be for eternity but they will only suffer up to 40 stripes since God cannot pass this which is vile and the judged church mostly say that they will suffer for eternity which is not true if you compare all scripture.

I want to stop believing in Christianity. Could someone please produce the body of Jesus?? Seriously, where is he???? If you can do that I'm done being a Christian. Bart, surely you can do this right? I've been following you for years but Paul literally gave you the key to end the Christian faith.... produce the body of a dead, non-resurrected Jesus and it is over.
Not finding a body doesn't really tell you anything. Not finding a 2000 year old body is not a good reason to believe that body resurrected. Additionally, while many people believe jesus historically existed, many also don't. Obviously if he didn't exist there's no body to be found. We'll never know for sure either way, but assuming he did is a problem here.
How would we identify the body? Do we have ANY bodies that old? Even if we did how would we know who they are, or who the bones are from?

It's amusing when random youtubers are telling literally the most cited bible scholar in the world how to read the bible lol.
You don't know what you're talking about, gehenna is referring to a literal place that still exists, the valley of hinnom, they explain in the very video you're commenting on what that means and why it's relevant and how it's been misconstrued by both christians and apparently muslims.
I'm sure Bart has read the Quran cover to cover, as have I, especially considering he just released an entire joint lesson on the quran with a quran historian.
Reading the Quran does not give one any insight to the bible, it just gives us an insight as to how yet another group of religious people misconstrue it and don't understand it, that group being muslims.
Hell is an eternal nightmare for continually rejecting Christ over and over while having the chance to accept Him before your death.

@@ThroneofDavid8 well no, because as articulated, my nightmare is literally lack of choice - a feeling of powerlessness, metaphorically like being stuck in an eternal traffic jam on a hot day. But honesty, in reality, I expect oblivion. You could argue that any kind of eternity is hellish, as you have no choice but to exist. At least with oblivion you get the opportunity to experience both existence and nonexistence - win win.
Gotta love two hours of Bart! This was a truly refreshing objective look at the facts. I like that the interviewer asked good questions and then just let Bart have had it. Very intellectual deep dive into hell.

This information is probably the hardest pill to swallow… because it’s also not very opinion oriented.
Anyone can read and find this themselves - and heaven and hell is such a foundational block in Christian theology, to have that stripped away means to have to reform or ignore. Will be interesting in the coming years to see how this information spreads and the changes maybe within churches or sects, or religion as a whole (probably not due tradition)
Biblical scholars have tried and failed for so long to prove that some or all biblical facts and events have really taken place in history. Now, there is a new approach trying to understand and analyze the logic and dynamics of what have been written without focusing too much about its historical veracity. They are doing much better and more successful in advancing our understanding of the religious heritage!
Religious biblical 'scholars' continue to declare that everything in the Bible actually happened and serious scholars have been taking a skeptical evidence based approach for centuries.
There isn't anything new about evaluating biblical claims with critical scrutiny or acknowledging that many claims made in the Bible are not literally true.
Scholarship in any field does not succeed by starting with a premise.
The historicity of biblical events and people remains an area of keen interest in biblical scholars, particularly Bart Ehrman.
You're talking about.something very different, which is presuming biblical events and people to be historical. This hasn't been the mainstream position of biblical scholars for a very long time and is a view advocated primarily by fundamentalists.
Skepticism about the historicity and authorship of the Bible isn't new; it dates at least as far back as the Enlightenment.
Biblical scholars like Ehrman frequently draw the ire of people across the belief spectrum from TH-cam atheists that don't like him for saying he thinks there was an historical Jesus to Christians that don't like him for saying we don't know who wrote the gospels and that their content has been edited over the millennia etc.
Serious, mainstream biblical scholars are are interested in what the objective facts actually are and not whether or not it supports or contradicts their preferred beliefs or lack thereof.

@@mr.c2485 Even if heaven and hell are internal states, hell would be no less horrific, because we perceive the world in our minds. It would also be a state that a person cannot just use the will to exit, so that does not soften the idea. We all know examples of people who are beyond help due to mental health challenges and they cannot exit, or be rescued.

Believing in and endorsing a literal Hell is the ultimate perversion.
It truly does turn christianity and the other abrahamic religion that shares it into the most perverted twisted moral systems imaginable.
Throw in the fact that the main thing that gets people sent there isn't even a sin according to modern theology, it's literal thought crimes, things utterly beyond our control. We don't get to choose what we believe, we have to be convinced to believe something. I've read the bible through cover to cover four times, i've listened to COUNTLESS hours of christian apologetics, i've read the most commonly recommended books to defend the faith and i've never been a believer, this of course condemns me to hell, yet apparently Jeffrey Dahmer found christ in prison, he repented and I keep hearing from apologists that he's the perfect example of christs mercy, he's in heaven i assume not eating people yet me, the guy who literally refuses to kill bugs, i'm doomed because god for some reason made me with a brain that simply cannot find any of this stuff convincing.

Parable comes from the Latin word parabola meaning comparison in 1st century. Stems from Greek parabolē ‘placing side by side, application’, from para- ‘beside’ + bolē ‘a throw’ (from the verb ballein ).Parable was never meant to mean some metaphorical meaning.

He probably is. That's fine. He's not a scholar or a professional interviewer and his questions were great.
Very interesting - I was a little frightened by the runtime but I thought there was only one bit that was a little bit dragged/repetitive (the part contrasting literal interpretations and metaphorical ones) but it wasn’t so long that I got unhooked. Overall, there was no filler, all interesting! And I say that as someone who’s already listened to Bart’s book and lectures about heaven and hell for hours!

Wow. Everything there is to know about hell in two hours flat. I appreciated that Grant knew his stuff but let Bart do the heavy lifting.

Matthew 5:17-18 … not one iota (a Greek letter) or keraia (part of some Greek letters) will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Matthew’s Jesus seems aware of *only* the Greek version of the Torah and Prophets and expects that his audience also knows only that version. Hebrew had no such orthography until much later, so it’s *not* just a translation issue.
My takeaway from this talk is that Christians refuse to acknowledge how much their tradition owes Plato (and almost assuredly the Vedic / Buddhist traditions) - because, as both Bart and James Tabor make clear in their respective lectures, the immortality of the soul is simply not a feature of either ancient or 1st Century ACE Judaism. According to Professor Arthur Williamson, in an old Teaching Company lecture series (Apocalypse Then, Apocalypse Now), some Christians continued to believe in a physical resurrection of the body as late as the 17th century.
Heaven and hell are the creations of human desire. Heaven is whatever you want and hell is whatever you don't want.
All man made by the living. The dead have nothing to say because they no longer exist to be rewarded or punished.
Going to heaven doesn't protect you from going to hell. What if you go to heaven, and then you rebel against god? Or is something else happens to alienate you from god?
