Thanks to people like Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Bart as well as the gift of the internet and youtube, so many people are becoming critical thinkers and reclaiming so many lost years.
I remember being the last one at school to be picked up several times and having panic attacks thinking the rapture came and I was left behind. No child should grow up like that (worse, I attended a christian school from K2-12 grade + had a religious family so it was hard to escape.)

I can relate. If no one was home after school, I got scared thinking everyone in my family was raptured except me.
I also grew up being told that Apocalypse means the end of the world and that Revelation was meant to be matched up to current events. I have a slightly different take because in the meantime i became a historian. When people think that a document was written looking to a future audience, its called The Whig Interpretation of History. A common example is that the Magna Carta was looking forward to the Declaration of Independence when "all men" would be free. But that is like saying that the Declaration was written looking forward to the Independence of Norway. No one would think that. Instead, Norway used our Declaration and Constitution as a model, looking backward. I now understand that Revelation was for the people of the time not the future. It gave me a great deal of relief.

It's exactly the same thing as Matthew 24 It's for people who are living then and for people who are alive now right before the second coming. The mark of the beast is for our time and it never happened before. We have the system and RFID chip already here. I don't worry about it because everyone dies and I have to die because of Jesus that I okay with me.

I was a full-on Christian for decades and am so happy and free now that I've escaped. Also, there is no need for any apologists, the minute you have one shows how there is not good evidence for that particular deity.

My understanding is that Revelation was written to assure the believers of the time that their oppressors would be punished and tortured for eternity.
It was written to comfort the oppressed churches of Asia Minor. According to the futurist view of End-times Eschatology, everything from Revelation 4 and onwards is still future. The 7 seals, the 7 trumpets and the 7 bowls of Wrath are yet to happen. Daniel 9:24-27 is the foundation for understanding the overall timeline. The Antichrist will confirm a peace covenant with Israel. Then the two witnesses will preach for 1260 days. Then the abomination of desolation will be set up in the third temple by the Antichrist. After that, the Antichrist will reign for 1260 days and persecute Israel and every believer.
(1260 + 1260 = 7 years).
At the very end of the 7-year Tribulation is the second coming of Christ to Earth where He judges all the nations. This is followed by the Millennial reign of Christ.

i have a real hunger for an "op ed" that deals in length with the effect that constantine's melding of church and State had upon christianity. Specifically, creating a christianity that would become clothed in wealth, power, and blood, and at the same time, a much smaller - dare i say remnant church - that would refuse any association with the sword and the monetization of faith it would bring. Like the Anabaptists, for instance.
i am an atheist, former christian, former "bloodied" soldier of Vietnam vintage, and an expat of everything herd-like. And iyam curious about the bifurcating of the church after the Milvian bridge, and the all-pervading, "constantinian" apostasy that has been masquerading as christianity ever since. There is something here to exposit, but not by a heavy handed expat like myself.
Whomever jesus actually was, he was decidedly not a war monger, bristling with swords, armies, and nukes. Butt🍑.........constantinian christianity is just so. If there does exist a "remnant" church, one composed of "expats," sojourners and strangers, why is it never spoken of, never referenced by scholars, never ever compared with the mock christianity that has so expertly supplanted it? The only christianity the world acknowledges is a counterfeit, and they are presently, diligently working to transform democracies into autocratic theocracies.
A coming rapture? Really? The entire concept of gods and raptures is fantasy, yet it is constantly exposited as if were a reality. The undermining of democracy by constantine's fallacious "church," however, is no fantasy - it's a fright!! Is there any place within scholarly notations for an unveiling of the monstrous masquerade that constantine unleashed upon the superstitious? Me thinks that there should be, and that that history alone, would fill volumes. There may not even be a "remnant" church of mythicists stumbling around out there somewhere. But there is an apostate church that, in it's own way, is as powerful today, as the catholic church that sired them was centuries ago. They may also be mere mythicists, but they are very real, and very dangerous mythicists.
It would be nice if someone with scholarly cred would take the time to outline the change that constantine affected in the history of christianity when he made it a prosperous, State religion. A change that literally rewrote the sermon on the mount to read more like an edict of war; unilateral, first strike war!! I agree that the comparison of the two men & women in Matthew 24:40-41 has nothing to do with the Rapture. Indeed the Rapture is not taught or described in the Olivet Discourse.
“According to Matthew 24:40-41, ‘Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.’ Because at the rapture, believers will be taken out of the world, some have confused this with the rapture of the church. Here, however, the situation is the reverse. The one who is left, is left to enter the Millennial kingdom of Christ; the one who is taken, is taken in judgment. This is in keeping with the illustration of the time of Noah when the ones taken away are the unbelievers.”
“In Matthew 24-Matthew 25 the expositor should, therefore, understand that the program of God for the end of the age has in view the period ending with the second coming of Christ to the earth and the establishment of His earthly Kingdom, not the church age specifically ending with the rapture. Both the questions of the disciples and the answers of Christ are therefore, keyed to the Jewish expectation based on Old Testament prophecy, and the program of God for the earth in general rather than the church as the body of Christ.”
However, when it comes to other passages like 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, I respectfully disagree with Bart Ehrmen.
The Rapture of the Church is primarily found in countless places like John 14:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:50-58; Titus 2:13; Philippians 3:20-21; Revelation 3:10 and Revelation 4:1.
However, as Bart already mentioned, Revelation 4:1 is more an image or a Type and shadow of the Rapture. The Rapture obviously didn't happen when the book of Revelation was written (A.D. 95).
The idea of the 7-year Tribulation originates from Daniel 9:24-27 (The famous 70 weeks prophecy). The book of Revelation can't be understood without the book of Daniel. Around 278 verses in the book of Revelation allude to the Old Testament. The Old Testament lays the foundation: Daniel is the basement and Revelation is the ceiling. Revelation won't make much sense when we throw Daniel out of the equation. The Rapture is an eschatological position held by Christians who take the Bible at face value and rely on the grammatical-historical interpretation of scripture (which is a modern Christian hermeneutical method that strives to discover the biblical authors' original intended meaning in the text). Please do some further study on Pre-tribulational (dispensational) Premillennialism. It must be stressed that the Rapture and the 2nd coming of Christ are two seperate events.
Bart Ehrman conveniently left out the fact that the book of Revelation provides very specific day counts.
The 7-year Tribulation isn't just some modern invention. It is the natural and exegetical conclusion of those specific day counts.

Revelation 12:6 = 1260 days = 3,5 years = SECOND half
Anyone who knows basic math knows that 1260 days + 1260 days equals 7 years.
Furthermore, Bart Ehrman conveniently left out the famous 70 Weeks Prophecy (490 years) in Daniel 9:24-27.
This passage provides a highly accurate math formula in order to calculate the FIRST coming of Christ in A.D. 33.

483 prophetic years = 173'880 days (483 x 360)

Since the first 69 Weeks (483 prophetic years = 173'880 days) have expired between the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes (444 B.C.) and The Triumphal Entry of Christ (A.D. 33), there are mathematically only 7 years left on the prophetic clock. This is basic math. Not too difficult.
It must be stressed that Daniel 9:27 is the entire foundation of the 7-year Tribulation, which is further described in Revelation 6-19 in more detail.
Where in Daniel is there a “pause” or “parenthesis” on the 70th week?

Because the Jews rejected their Messiah, God paused the 70 weeks clock.
Between Da 9:26 and Da 9:27 there is a hidden 2000 year gap, known as the Church-age.
Between Da 11:35 and Da 11:36 there is a hidden 2000 year gap, known as the Church-age.
As you know, the famous "parenthesis" (Church-age) exists only because the Jews crucified their own Messiah. We are living in a gap of grace.

According to Daniel 9:24, six prophecies need to be fulfilled at the end of the 490 years.
1.) finish the wrongdoing
2.) make an end of sin
3.) make atonement for guilt
4.) bring in everlasting righteousness
5.) seal up vision and prophecy
6.) anoint the Most Holy Place
Obviously not all of these prophecies have been fulfilled in the first century AD.
In summary, the first 3 things are fulfilled in principle by the first coming of Christ, but completely only at his return.
The last 3 points are fulfilled at his second coming.
In Da 9:26b we read about the horrible siege of Jerusalem in AD 70.

But when we move to Verse 27 it suddenly skips the entire Church-age into the book of Revelation. Clearly meant is the end of the age as well as the judgment at the second coming of Christ, for the establishment of righteousness did not occur 7 years after the death of the Messiah nor does the destruction of Jerusalem fit into this 7-year period (which did not occur until 37 years later in AD 70). It is the 7 future years that end with the final judgment on sin as well as the righteous reign of Christ; meaning His return and the taking up of His reign. These 7 years form Daniel's 70th week of years.
43:50 - ".. massive feasts and power and glory .. great banquets.."
IOW, the next world will be a reward of creature comforts - all of the things that were so lacking, for so many, in ancient times.
In retrospect, it stuns me just how shallow this all is. All that's missing are the 72 eternal virgins.. for you to parade around on the streets of gold.

Only I have claimed "no 7 years tribulation" mentioned in the Revelation... just those that came out of Great Tribulation.
The Treaty shall be broken = 3.5 years of the tribulation of the saints that will prepare a peculiar people to meet their God, whichever One they serve.
I first heard of the rapture in 1975 and it sounded way out there to me. Charismatics at that time believed it would happen in 1980, citing 1973 as a very prophetic year and the beginning of a 7-year countdown to the rapture. The war in the middle east, the oil crisis, more earthquakes than normal, and unusual snowfall in Georgia and the Carolinas while the north was snowless in the winter of '73 were some of the "signs".
So, this has been going on for a very long time. The date of the rapture has been moved so many times that people don't pay attention any more. I think when Jesus didn't return in 2000 that was the last straw for a lot of people.
You said you have a copy of the book by Tim LaHaye Revelation Unveiled and you talked about what LaHaye said about Pseudo - Ephrem . I also have a copy of the book . You were speaking about what LaHaye wrote on page 110. Did you notice that for some unknown reason Bart choose not to explain the quote on page 110 that says:" All the saints in elect of God are gathered together before the tribulation which is to come, and are taken to the Lord, in order that they may not see at any time that confusion which overwhelms the world because of our sins."I really wanted to know how Bart would explain this. Evangelical Christians quote this passage not the passage that Bart read. Why did he do this ? I was let down that Bart did not try to refute this specific quote that anybody can google for themselves and find Christians using it to prove that Darby was not the first Christian to teach that the elect of God are taken to the Lord ( 1 Thess 4) before the tribulation. As you know LaHaye did not quote from Pseudo - Ephrem anything other than the quote I provided on page 110. Why didn't you quote to Bart what was on page 110 from Pseudo Ephrem?

Is is REALLY true on page 111 that LaHaye did not mention any other person other than Pseudo - Ephrem that believes the church would depart from the earth before the wrath of God ( Rev 16) ?
@@bradmyers7109 I have to go back and listen. From what I remember I read from the book and Bart expanded by quoting directly from Pseudo Ephrem, Bart wasn't reading from LaHaye's book unless he was reading from a scanned page that I sent him prior to our recording.

Jeremy Duncan studied John's Revelation for his thesis and developed a non-violent interpretation in his recent book Upside-down Apocalypse.
He sees it contrasting human desire for a vengeful God resembling imperial power with Christ who wins by the "sword" of his words and his own blood, not that of his enemies. The instances of divine violence are fantastical hypothetical images of what would happen if God answered the prayers of the martyrs, concluding that this approach is ineffective: "they did not repent". In the end, the kings of the earth who had been slaughtered are still around, bringing their wealth into the city. Those thrown into the lake of fire are also still around outside the city. While nothing unclean will enter, the gates remain permanently open, hinting perhaps that the option to repent remains.
Dude, you can read whatever you want into the words of a narcissistic madman. The only problem with Revelation is that some fourth century idiots decided to put it into the bible. It doesn't belong there. It goes against absolutely everything that modern Christianity pretends to be. The trivial solution to it is for the Vatican to issue an order that accepting Revelation into the canon was a mistake and that future editions of the bible will remove it. That will force Evangelicals and other kinds of nutcases to either change their theology or admit that they aren't Christians by heart.
If the dead are raised to meet the Lord in the air (1Thess 4:17), then what kind of body will they have? Paul answers in 1Cor 13:35-58 that the body will be a spiritual body, like Jesus in heaven, and not an earthly body. So will the old earth be destroyed at that moment, and a new spiritual earth (creation) replace the old in which everything is spiritual, including those who are saved? One can hardly expect spiritual beings to escort the spiritual Lord back to an old earthly city with rats and sewers. So that is why we always assumed the Lord would rapture us out of this corrupt world before it is destroyed. 2Cor 5:8 has another view of Paul where to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Some may have believed differently than Paul, and expected the Lord to come to rule this old earth and the nations with a scepter of iron, perhaps for a thousand years. And there does seem to be two camps. Paul's camp, and the camp of the Book of Revelation.
The overall point, though, is that Rapture theology is a relatively new theology and even the more orthodox Christian needs to admit that it wasn’t really a thing though out Christian history. If it was original to Paul or other biblical writers, I think something so important would be explained a bit more thoroughly (in at least one ancient text) with more clarity than a couple of out of context sentences that more than likely don’t allude to such an event.
Agreed. I read James Tabor's "Paul and Jesus," and Paul had an idea of a "cosmic transformation" at the Parousia . But Revelation has no general rapture, but only ruling the earthly nations (Gentiles) with a rod of iron. Josephus and Tacitus said this idea of an earthly Messianic rule is what most motivated the Jewish nation to revolt against Rome. I suspect instead that a small minority of zealot rebels ended up taking over the whole nation of Judea. And once in power, there was not much that could be done after that. Apparently they believed with God's help they could defeat the Romans.

After studying the OT in Hebrew, I found the jews to be correct and the entirety of Christianity to be false. Revelations to be a secretive letter to those expecting God to destroy Rome in their lifetime.
Dr. Tabor has pointed out that early Jewish Christianity mainly grew out of book of Daniel, being repurposed from resistance literature against Antiochus Epiphanes to resistance literature against Rome. In 4Maccabees 17:21 (written about 40AD) the martyrdom of a righteous one functions as a ransom for the sins of the Jewish people. But the martyrs would be raised from the dead (or raptured) at the end of the age. And the end of the age was close, and Jesus became the first fruits of the dead. This was probably how the Jerusalem church saw the martyrdom of Jesus, and was kind of an apology for Jesus' failed bid to be the Davidic king in his lifetime. But they believed that Jesus would come again to fulfill that role. Paul took a similar message to the Gentiles, saying that Jesus was a ransom for them also. But some in the Jerusalem church did not like the last and the least (Gentiles) being made equal to the first (Jews), so some apparently rejected Paul's Gospel, expecting the Gentiles to convert to Judaism. Also, they believed that Paul was teaching Jews not to follow Moses. Mark therefore portrays the pillars of the Jerusalem church in a negative way, wicked husbandmen who could not watch one hour for the fullness of Paul's Gentiles to come in, and who denied and betrayed Paul's Jesus (meaning Paul). So Mark's Gospel is mainly a parable (or allegory) about Paul as pointed out by Gustav Volkmar in 1857 "Die Religion Jesu". And because they rejected Paul's Jesus Christ and Paul's gospel and instead chose Barabbas of Revelation, and they could not watch nor wait, that is why the lord of the vineyard destroyed those husbandmen. This was not strictly true why Jerusalem fell, but that was Mark's apology to his church for the destruction of the Temple and the Jerusalem church. So Mark's Gospel centers around two apologies, one for the failed bid of Jesus to be the Davidic Messiah, and the other for the destruction of Jerusalem and the Jerusalem church, apparently for following or acting out something like Revelation. And you are correct that Revelation is a somewhat coded "letter" and resistance literature that the Romans could not have been happy about, because it wanted to burn their city with fire.

I never thought the Book of Revelation was about indulging in the flesh at the end. We're going to be the "bride of Christ"? The feast is the "wedding feast of the lamb"? The only way that can be interpreted is spiritual. The symbolism in Revelation in conjunction with Matthew 22:30 is used to argue that we won't have mating partners in eternity. That dualistic, anti-flesh mentality is one of the problems with Christianity.

Revelation has 2 events pointing to rapture. But first, what does rapture mean? Strong's 726 Harpazo- to seize, catch up, snatch away
This has happened to Enoch, Elijah, Yahusha, Phillip, Paul, John, and the two witnesses.
It really doesn't matter what Ehrman thinks, it's about what Paul tells us, he's in the bible, Ehrman is not and that's how I approach higher criticism on this subject.
Now in Matthew 24 did not Yahusha say not to believe that he was in the desert, or in the high place? Did He not say that the time of the end was not yet but it was the end of the "age"?
Did He not tell his deciples that every stone would be thrown down? Yes, He warned them before and yet they didn't understand just like when He told them that He'd be killed. The deciples had different expectations at that time and could not see or put the stories in the Torah together to realize what was happening. Now the only reason that people date the book of revelation late is because of the word "that". They assume Clement was referring to the book itself or John himself was seen in those days of Domision, but yet fail to recall the fact that Clement himself called the it "the ancient book".
Also, Revelation never has any mention to the destruction of the Herodian temple meaning it was most likely written before 68AD. Daniel also said that prophecy would be sealed up during this period. The imprisonment of John to the island of Patmos also points to the fact that Nero was still in charge at that time.
These things most certainly contradicts most peoples eschatology because they have been programmed to this just the opposite in most cases. Like a third temple in Revelation or Daniel 9:24-27 is about the AC. This is conjecture! They somehow foolishly insert an ac and a covenant and oh well we need a third temple for that to happen...its a lie!!! Nowhere in Revelation is there a 3rd temple on Earth. Daniel 9 is ONLY about Yahusha and Titus at the end of the age. The end is not yet, until the fulness of the Gentiles comes in.
A rapture will occur either 7 years before the 120th Jubilee or during the jubilee. The falling away is happening now and Israel is now at war. The rapture is meant to bring the Jews to contempt and jealousy, to get them to read the new testament that was made at the last supper. To calculate Daniel's prophecy and finally see what they killed their Mashiach! They will be afflicted until they say blessed is He who comes in the name of Adonia. I have the rapture window between February 25th-May 28th 2024 if its this side of 2029-2030 when the jubilee begins on the day of atonement 2029. We'll see...

Listen closely to what he said…. Bart read the New Testament before going to Moody to prepare for potential tests. He didn’t read the New Testament to find out about God or learn about Christ. Bart said he read the book of Revelation and could not understand it… Of course he would not understand it! The book of revelation is best interpreted with the whole canon not just one book. I also don’t hear his sincerity and seeking God through prayer and humility. He searched the scriptures but not through faith which will never lead to understanding and wisdom of the one true God

The book of Revelation is just crap. It should never have been included in the Bible. It was just one of many apocalypses floating around at the time, written by someone we know nothing about.

No Bart just because someone says something is biblical it is the responsibility of the believer to research what is said and pray fully say God to lead them to the truth. I read The Late Great Planet earth but that does not shape ultimately the way God guides our theology. This guy is one of the biggest grifters of all time. It's astonishing. He's made an entire second career (and, I'm guessing, quite a bit of money) raging against a God in which he doesn't even believe. I do hope he repents soon. Once he's dead or Christ returns, it will be too late. This man has made it his mission to turn people against Christ. That's a huge thing for which he will have to one day answer. The most disturbing part is... he KNOWS all of that because he KNOWS what the Bible says. I find that horrifying.

If you’re e actually read any of Bart’s books you’d know they are well researched. He’s not just writing his own opinions, he’s covering what historical scholars pretty much agree on. He usually has other scholars, who by the way are still believing Christians, proof read his books before sending them to his publisher. The only Christians he has a problem with are fundamentalists who think the Bible is the inerrant word of God.

Context is important, as is audience relevance. Who were the bible writers speaking to? They were speaking to the people of their era. The bible is just a fictionalized history of the ancient Israelites, whose writings included thoughts on who they thought their god was. All the nations surrounding Israel had their gods, Pagan as they were, until the Roman Empire converted to Christianity.
