I would add that you need to know the wet weight of your camper plus the additional weight of all your belongings. Many manufacturers only advertise the dry weight of their campers. Furthermore not all of your weight capacity is in the bed. The front axle takes up some of your total weight capacity such as passengers and engine weight, etc. An Eagle Cap on a 3500 dually is still asking for trouble because you don't actually have 7500lbs payload back there, it's more like 5500lbs (see the Rams that have snapped in half). Always try to have a good sized buffer between what your payload sticker says on the door and the wet weight of your camper.
Hey Kevin, have to say I absolutely LOVE your channel. I live in Alberta and have been wanting to do exactly what you're doing, living you best most free life. These educational vids help a fella out a lot, keep em coming!!!
@@KevinWaldsAdventures Any time buddy! I think I've binged about 80% of your videos in the last week or so, I just can't get enough. If you're ever in the Red Deer/Lacombe area I'd love to buy you lunch and chat with you about all the do's and don'ts. Can't wait to see you hit 100,000 subs my friend. The day WILL come ;)
Hell yeah, man. I have been thinking about doing the same, also in alberta, made a similar comment in the past actually, good luck and I hope it works out for you.
Love the haircut, Kevin. No, renting a rig isn't really feasible for your average folks, but common sense should tell you. I bought a van - pretty bougey, but I'm an old lady who has camped all my life and couldn't bear the thought of dying surrounded by the same four walls. Sure, my walls are smaller, but I get a new living room, nearly every day. ❤
Good advice. Another thing to consider, assuming you have the budget, buy a cheap vehicle (van/boxtruck) build it out inexpensively and live in it at least during the weekend but you can stay in your local area and live out of this setup for weeks or months to try this out. If you don't like it, move back into a home/apt. And yes, keep your job as you experiment and build up that emergency fund!
Nice hair cut, Kevin. Even though I am not going to live in a truck camper at this time as I am a 64 year old grandma but I do enjoy learning about this lifestyle, and I like to see nature and the adventures you go on. Thank you for the information and videos. LOVE FROM IOWA! 😊❤❤❤
I have been living in my truck n camper since 2008 and you are so right on your tips and info ....I lived and parked close to work all these years with mine working full time in the mountains in winters and at the beach in summers . I have a lance camper and like it alot for the super light weight (1730 lbs ) and the one piece metal roof .... I did some mods and made it work for me ....thanks for the vids I will keep watching ....cheers .👍🏼🍺
Thank you for this video! It’s so informative. I have been researching for a while and I have been looking for all of this information. I bought my truck a week and a half ago and I get my truck camper tomorrow. This is the video I needed!
That’s cool you are on the island! I’ll keep my eyes open for you haha! Not sure where you are headed to next on the island but I could give you a list of cool places! I lived for 3 years in my truck and camper chasing rigs around northern bc and Alberta. I went north in a $100 half rotten camper and after the first winter come spring I had 4” of hard packed ice on the floor of the camper haha. A few days it was so cold that the propane froze up. Poured the propane out like jelly!
As a former insurance guy, be careful telling folks they don't need to stay within their trucks stated cargo weights. If you get into a serious accident that's gets investigators involved; there's going to be issues. Like your insurance company may not cover your accident.
Make your own ive seen some really nice ones build from fiberglass n wood. Most of these n other homes are made from 2x2 n 1x2s accept a few 2x4s. N if they tell you different theyre fullnof it ive ripoed them apart and fixed them. Other than my class c n a few other trailers they may have some small amount of aluminum that just rots n its so its easier to build from in factirys the woods rhin as hell n at least you can add a little thicker wood n better insulation. N most of the new ones are also rotting out too. Those twist buckles bend your truck hooks. Dont get those and the jacks are very expensive. So of u plan on taking it off n on alot then there are other options. But those run a few thousand unless u can find some on kijiji or craigs list or off an okd camper. Most campers built weigh 1100 n under for weight. Mine will be under way under weight. I seen enough vids for this info. The other info was great i always forget about harbour freight. And amazon has solar panel kits for a cheaper price and they are food ones renergy. Ive bout the kit n 2 xtra panels n everything else i needed. Id love to have a battery bank, tho more rhan anything. They come in handy. Financially i have an incpme that will follow me always n im beter off in a camper than where i am jsut its hard to park in ontario unless your in a van or a camper. A van is stealth camper not so kuch. Fire halls have water for 50 cents n there are many soribgs around for free. But some firehalls shut the water off. Ilander i believe shows places to park n where to get water etc i believe it shows where water is. Good idea about a fund saved before u leave. N caa be a good one to have too. Prices have changed sijce covid as far as the rental now. It was 200 or 300 n insurance. But since covid even apt rentals are off the rails. They are kicking ppl out to rebuild places n doubke or triple charging. So alot of ppl are going to trsilers rvs canpers etc. Can u blame them. Sad part is theyre tryin to get rid of rvs but ppl are homeless becsue of these ppl. What do they call it umm renoviction. Elderly bug time are becoming homeless n low income homes and apts are full of meth n drug users so bad the reg ppl have to leave jsut to get away from it its so bad. I mean u canlt even sleep at night without breathing it in yiur own unit. Thats why i am going off grid. My landlord passed n someone else took over his home he barely new. Had him sign papers n his son lsot his dads housue over it. I tried helping but i failed i was a tenenat for yrs there n took care of him here n there when he needed me. He liked his independence n i went back for him. In his last months i got an apt thinking id be safe nope. Put myself in a by the income apt over the falls. Its beautiful i mean beautiful. I keep to myself n i pay full rent but at what cost ots full of drugs. These ppl gping thru this apt evection need help and ways to make it. Times have changed. I am waiting on a truck its a gmc. But ive got a 250 ford flatbed im also waiting on. I dont think the gm will hold a camper even if i built it uo over my cab. Its a extended cab too. But not as beefybas say a ford. So i am tryig to have both for backup n then im leaving. I can save a grand in cas just leaving here. So why wouldn't i. Gonna wnd up drove put with all the drug use anyhow and its becoming unsafe. Ive seen a few ppl build up here in ontario and sent west after. If u could do a video about building costs n cheaoer trucks used for ppl the older ppl would greatly benefit n younger from that info. And the ones dtayibg here tpughing out this minus 40 n 50 snow snaps. Cux where do u go to park too. All pf that info would greatly hekp alot of ppl. Plus they look for those vids. Be a good vid to add to your channel. Sorry i wrote u a book. I am passionate about ppl n the elderly n ppl becoming homeless because of lack of homes. Its sad and breaks my heart. Maybe im ranting to some but its truly from my heart. Take care sorry about my legendary book hahaha 😆 drive safe
I bought a 10-2 northern light beginning of January, I did one month trip to Smokey mountains and loved it. But have had it is storage ever since. I’m getting cold feet with thought of full time. Worried if it breaks down and I can’t work. Very reliant on internet for my work.
Hey, Kevin, thanks for all the Great info!!! I got a question, How do u feel about Lance truck campers compare to like the one u have??? Thanks, Take Care & Happy Travels!!!!!
Thanks for the video! Because of you, and your great videos, I’ve been considering a truck camper. Is height pretty standard? They always seem so “tall” and that concerns me a little. You didn’t share with us your new haircut and beard trim! Looks good even with a hat. LOL! Either way, you rock!! 🤟😎❤️🌈☮️
Heights can vary, my first truck camper was about 10ft and now I’m sitting at about 12ft it’s just good to measure the hieght after you get the rig set up, and thank you!!!
Always great info Kevin. I too really enjoy my own company. As we get into this lifestyle the less I want to talk to people who don’t understand this way of living. Thats where youtube and your videos come in. Lol. I’m living a champagne dream on a beer budget and wouldn’t change much. I’m in NS and the humidity has been in the 80 for the past couple weeks. I’ve got the places mapped out now that im on my third year. Cheers bro and for geez sake just give in to the diesel heater. You don’t know what you’re missing bro! 👍👍
Hey Kevin, do u watch 'cummins camper'? He had a ram 3500 n an older lance he n his wife renovated the old lance. He maxed his payload n knew it because he likes to bring his tools along and has a small motor bike on the back. So he has switched to a 5500. Artic fox n lances are heavier than brochures make u believe. I learned that in my research. Your true sticker weight shock will happen at the scales after the fact, n that would suck! Eagle caps r insanely heavy, no surprise they don't make em anymore. There is no way i would get a cirrus 920 n slap it on my 3500 dually. You'll be maxing your weight before u even add water 😬. I researched to death before i bought my NL camper, n glad i did, nothing would be more upsetting as to find out your truck struggles to go up mountains, n now u gotta add all this fancy pancy rear end suspension help with a too heavy of a camper lol. Great video of info for a newbee . 🍻
I think in so cases it would be fair to say that 4500 or 5500 would be needed but I’m finding the biggest add to a trucks payload is just the extra two tires on the rear, once you add tools and a motorbike or a really heavy trailer then yes a 5500 should be in consideration I agree too.
New to you. Love the rig. Your a handsome boy,do you get lonely traveling alone. I would love to do this before I am to old. Enjoy and will be watching. Thanks friend...Mike
I think I would choose the dually ultimately next time around, peace of mind and if I want to go bigger in camper I can. This camper works perfect on a srw but it’s only 2300lbs
@KevinWaldsAdventures wow, 2300lb! I think all the new models are much heavier. I don't really want a dually, but I think I need to for safety issues. Thanks for all your valuable experience sharing !!
Hello beautiful eyes 👀 I really like you're hair cut it' always amazing to see another amazing video yu are so right I really enjoy going camping yes I would love to have a truck camper it would save on Bills
I have a Chevy Silverado 2500 3/4 ton and I'm looking for a small used truck camper to live in Las Vegas area. I just retired at 62 and I don't want to pay rent anywhere because I only make $1130 a month on social security
The happy jack system is completely reliant on the health of your truck bed tie down bolts and mounts. I've seen clapped out 20 year old rigs with a camper tied to the bed and body flip right off the truck frame CAMPER, TRUCK BED and all. What a mess!!. So keep that idea in mind only if your rust is minimum and your bed mounts are NOT weather cracked. It's a federal law to NOT WELD ON FRAME BETWEEN DRIVE AND STEERING AXLES. Before and aft is OK.
Thanks for posting 👍👍 Please use timestamps. I liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work. (edit your vids - shorter intro, no one cares about the waether, keep it to the point) - Its positive, its good - Its informative 👍
I'd argue that $1800 for a weekend with a truck and camper is pretty inexpensive if it includes your insurance, and you're given some guarantee that the truck and camper are safe, as opposed to renting somebody else's setup that may or may not need work or hasn't been checked for safety by someone qualified
Rent any rv or van is insanely costly😤 And then you have to pay for the campsite which can cost $25 to $80 a night. That's an expensive try it out....and some have some pretty strick use of them. It's just sad😢
