    I was really divided between the Pana and Sony, the APS-C performance is juicy but all the downsides from the Sony ecosystem together with the higher price kills it for me. I went with Panasonic instead.

      The Pannys are seriously the best. Sony has the better image, but held back by crap menus and horrible rolling shutter.

    Fantastic comparison of two awesome cameras. I'd say the large price difference between the two cameras is something worth considering. Once Sony address their ergonomics and Panasonic their continuous af in video they'll be unstoppable.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks, there indeed is significant price difference, but I guess that people can decide which camera is worth their money based on provided information. There is something to improve on both cameras, but I actually think that both are great as they are, although smaller annoyances of A6500 are easier to fix than AF on G85 (if I dont consider 7-14mm as a fix).
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

      >> Once Sony address their ergonomics
      Sony also have to do something about their reputation for building cameras that break easily and then cheating the user on the warranty and refusing post-warranty repairs. When people spend thousands of dollars on a system they want the sort of relationship that Canon and Nikon have provided. Fuji have realised this, but none of the other wannabes seem to have done so - and Sony are by far the worst.

    I looked at both of these and bought the g85. To me, the handling was important. Also, there are many software features in the G85 that I thought would be good. Finally, there was the price.

      I would say that G85 is good enough, successor will have some improvements of course, but G85 is a good package as it is, except for the autofocus, but I don't think that it will be significantly improved in the next generation.

      The Hybrid Shooter yea right theres 500$ difference in price.. but panasonic doesnt have any camera in between that price range.. a6500 cost around 1300$ body only.. i mean after g80 panasonic straight up jump to gh5.. and gh5 completely owned a6500 in all category.. so if we wanna compare a6500 with a panasonic.. its would be g80..

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      GH5 definitely doesn't own A6500 in every category, A6500 si better stills camera, autofocus is miles ahead, it is smaller and lighter, A6500 has a lot of advantages over GH5, but GH5 doesn't compete with A6500 IMO, GH5 is intended for serious filmmakers, average TH-camr or hybrid shooter probably won't be able to utilize advanced futures of GH5.

    • @hendryyyy1262
      @hendryyyy1262 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hybrid Shooter yea sir.. my bad.. ure right.. if its taking still photos a6500 is still better.. at that price range panasonic should develop its apsc sensor and lens selection.. btw u should make a comparison between d500 and d750.. despite its flaws and age.. d750 still produce a good picture.. many still confused on deciding between the 2.. so i think its still relevant.. and ur comparison videos are so full of detail.. im curios on how u compare that 2..

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to do that, but unfortunately, I don't own either of those cameras, and at the moment I can only review gear that I own and use... hopefully sometime in the future.

  • @chochonubcake
    @chochonubcake 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Excellent comparison. I picked m43 because I had enough of hauling around a bag of APS-C lenses. The bigger sensor does produce better pictures, but in my photography, there wasn't a discernible difference. I picked the G85 because of the handling: it was an easy transition from a Nikon D7000 to a G85. As you noted in the review, it's super easy to do almost everything; there are a few features that are poorly explained in the manual - but for most of these, TH-cam and DPR forums filled in the blanks.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IBIS - In body image stabilization is possible to use all the time. Only the Auto ISO can't be used with manual movie mode and manual exposure settings on G85.

      @ryanogle9801 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      okay your an expert, I have not spoken to an expert about this before but I have researched a lot. I'd like to Subscribe right now, :) I know the a6300 and sony E, and sigma 18-35 are amazing cameras and lenses for the price, I've used the a6300 with a Zeiss and love the small camera body, I like rangefinders better then slr,dslr body,. because I have a gh3 with a $10 adapter and a vintage 50mm fd Cannon. I am a manual focus no stabilization filmer at concerts and at music videos right now. But I want a cheap 4k v-log or cinelike d or V with IBIS and I eventually want to pair IBIS with lens ISO with Gimble IS. But I also want a street photography, vacation run and gun 4k video camera street portrait camera. I'm I aiming to low looking at the Gx85 and asking for all of this in one camera?
      if I want all these things in one, is it possible in gx85 $399(body)? is it possible in g7$380(body)? a6300$750(body)?(ebayusedprices)
      To keep the body similar to the A6300, with all these features does this gx85 still cut it? thinking of my love of low light concert video, and band portraits and low light portrait and street photography, is the gx85 body for $400, with a $500 Sigma 18-35 $199 Aputure DEC and $400 Ronin (used) all line up to compete at the pro image level?
      watch this comparison between 00:38 - 1:57-3:15 to grasp that impression of wanting IBIS street video like adventures with cheep short lenses, Wanting to be able to use adapters, wanting cinema color and limited color grading and limited noise at night, like fun summer camp stuff, all on the GX85.
      th-cam.com/video/BIIV71UicJA/w-d-xo.html,
      &
      bring out the ronin and sigma and Aputure DEC all attached to a gx85 with a dummy battery. for higher level shoots.
      My Friends and I made the sasquatch video last year on rented sonys they are all buying lumix GH5s, I dont have that kind of cash.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that GX85 is suitable for your purposes, if you intend to use it on the gimbal, IBIS is not that important, A6300 will give you great picture profiles and low light you can get something like Sigma 16mm F1.4 and 30mm F1.4 for professional grade image quality and you only need something like Zhiyun Crane for it. Unfortunately it is not possible to have everything for that price.

    Although the focusing inferiority of the G80 in video is seen at segment 8:46, how does the touch screen respond to refocusing? As a beginner who is looking at the price difference between the two cameras, I can live with the focusing issue as long as the touch screen can quickly refocus the view during recording video, by touching the subject that I need focusing on.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it works quite well, although the focusing using touchscreen is still slow and it hunts in more difficult situations.

      @koolkutz7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I own the Panasonic G80/85 & you can touch the screen where you want to 'pull focus' in AF-S mode but it does hunt a little bit-it seems to find the focus point, go beyond then back which obviously looks a bit unprofessional. Better to use manual focus with focus peaking and get good at focus pulling yourself.

    • @loft4me
      @loft4me 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Steve. Having had my camera for a month, and a chance to experiment, I appreciate your point on manual focusing and using peaking to get a good focus. Also, when I am shooting landscape in low light and taking repeated shots in the distance, I tried auto focus hold/lock to keep focus locked on the distant scenery. I guess this is something we need to live with? LOL.

    which camera would you recommend for a vlogger (so a lot of movement)? Right now I'm using the Lumix G7 but was looking to get something with stabilisation built in. The G80 looks good except for the not-so-great autofocus. Do you think it's worth losing the flip-out screen to get much better and faster autofocus with the a6500?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +22TV If you can get Panasonic 7-14 for G80, I reccomend G80, because almost everything is in focus with that lens anyway at wide angles. I think that it is the best combo for vlogging. I will make video about that soon. It should work quite well with G7 as well.

    First of all, thanks for sharing this awesome comparison! Can you please tell me, if it's possible to start as a wedding shooter using the G85 with 12-60mm lenses + 25mm 1.7?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      G85 is good for weddings, but regarding the 12-60mm (if you mean the kit lens, not the Leica version) I don´t think that it is suitable for weddings, because focus ring travel is quite long, it can´t keep focus while zooming in and it is slow at the long end. Take a look at my review of that lens to see how it behaves. For weddings you will probably have to buy something like Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8. I haven´t tested the 25mm 1.7, so can´t give any advice on that one, maybe in future.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @sylvainpaquette6132
      @sylvainpaquette6132 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As good as the 12-60 is, you need at least a constant f2.8. The panasonic 12-35 would be compatible with dfd but the olympus 12-40 f2.8 is more enjoyable to use and better sharpness.

    A6500 to expensive for me... Looking between the A6300 and G80. A6500 is equal to the A6300 but it doesnt have the in body stabilization.
    I like the 4k from the A6300 more because of the detail and I love the autofocus. However I am not sure if the A6300 would be suitable for vlog-type videos due to lack of proper stabilization?
    The G80 video quality is good, but not as crispy, stabilization is awesome, but the focus is not good. Which makes me wonder if when I am vlogging in will focus on me quickly enough?
    What would you recommend in my case?

    Hi great video I have the G80 and love it. I am however thinking of upgrading my camera but have 2 choices firstly it to add the GH4 to my kit. The second option is to sell the G80 and put my funds together and get the GH5. I currently use the Fuji XT20 ( my stills camera) as my B camera but am thinking if i went for option 1 I would have 2 lumix camera for it I would br far easier to match footage. I am confused and would appreciate your view on my dilemma. Thanks JF

    • @TheHybridShooter

      Personally I wouldn't buy GH4, if you want 2 lumix, another G80 would be better choice. Best choice would be to sell XT20 and get Panasonic G9, that way you would have two Lumix cameras including dedicated stills camera which still has most of GH5 futures and even some more.

      GH5 has some advanced futures like high bit rate 4K, 60p 4K all-intra, log profiles and so on, and you really need have use for those, otherwise you wouldn't benefit from having GH5 anyway. Also take a look at Sony A6500 and A6300.

      The Hybrid Shooter Sony A6500 was another another one I came close to buying, the BMPCC looked fantastic too. I ended up buying the G80, your review of it was one of the reasons, Panasonic were offering £100 cash back so it only cost £650. With the 12-60 kit lens and so much more it was too good a deal to turn down. I wanted to be a filmmaker for a long time and finally with the technology becoming affordable, I can at least make a microbudget film hopefully and then just keep learning. Wow and you're humble too....what a guy? lol. For most, including myself, I think the price is what is gonna be the deciding factor. A6500 is expensive and that's just the body, then you gotta buy lens for it that are also really pricey. The G85 is reasonable however I think good glass is also pricey for the G85 since you have to accommodate for the micro 4/3 sensor. I'm leaning towards the G85 cause I'm doing a podcast type channel mainly so there isn't much motion.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I didn't talk about prices, because those vary, and I guess that people can decide which camera is worth the money on the base of what they see... you will definitely be fine with G85 for podcast type channel and kit lens that I reviews recently, will also do a good job, or something like 20mm f1.7 will also be great. Also take a look at A6300, those are pretty affordable right now and I also think that you can build usable lens collection for APS-C E mount with reasonable budget, I will make some video about that in future.

  • @andrear9500
    @andrear9500 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice review Hybrid Shooter! One thing that I would have digged deeper into is the price, not only of the body itself (as I write €700 Panasonic vs €1375 Sony) but lenses price too. Example in 35mm equiv: Leica 16-36 f2.8-4 (€1130) - Sony 18-36 f4 (€1750); or Olympus 24-80 f2.8 (€630) - Sony 24-105 f4 (€890); or Olympus 80-300 f2.8 (€1250 with teleconverter 1,4x) - Sony 105-300 f4 (€1380). Sony is always 1 stop behind. Same story if you look at kit/slower lenses. I think this is important.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, but if you want to compare lenses at 35mm eqv. you also need to multiply the aperture, not just for the depth of field, but for light gathering as well. Sony is actually not slower. I intentionally don't talk about prices, I prefer to show what are the cameras capable of and let viewers decide what is worth their money.

    • @andrear9500
      @andrear9500 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew about the depth of field factor, but was unaware of actual light coming through. Since manufacturers always specify focal length equiv. (I assume because of liabilities issues too) I think they should do it for aperture too. But never seen it on any lens description. Thank you and keep going like this.

    I can't stand the user interface of the sony. There is something that doesn't make sense in it. I sold all my sony ff gear not that long ago and now use a gx85 and a g85 and I don't regret it. Went to try the a6500 and remembered the headaches I got from the a7. It"s from an amateur perspective but I really like using panasonic camera and really like their menu system and customization plus the lens selection is just amazing. Technically the sony sensor is better but in real life it doesn't mean anything.

      User interface may be the weakest part of A6500, but I definitely don't consider it to be critically bad, after I set the FN buttons, function menu and custom modes, it works perfectly fine for me, definitely not as joyful to use as G85 but still OK.
      Regarding the sensor, I don't agree, it means a lot to me, especially in low light conditions, it is not just technically better, it is better in reality.

    I find it interesting that you state that people would possibly prefer the G85 if they've only used a smart phone camera. That's pretty insulting, frankly. Did you want to clarify this statement?
    I've been doing digital photography for 13+ years and with cameras, not mobile phones. Heck, didn't have a camera that would take a decent photo or video until my iPhone 5, and that was in 2012. My background is primarily with Olympus and just jumped ship when I saw the price on the new Mark II. I loved using PEN series, but after three trade ups, I went back to a camera with better ergos and video capabilities. In short, I'm not a pro, but not a newb either, and I chose the Panasonic for its real value. Just need some better glass for it now. :-]

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I have honestly no idea what could be insulting about that, just the opposite, G85 has great controls and touchscreen, so I think that people used to their smartphones would find it easier to operate than Sony or Canon for example.

    • @userbosco
      @userbosco 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the response. I misinterpreted the comment, sorry. Because the way I "heard" the comment in this and your other review, it came across like "even a moron who can only do selfies could take a picture w/ the G85". That's also I asked you to clarify the comment, which you did completely. It was a good review, keep up the great work.

      I think the person who is being insulting here is you, bosco. No, people are not morons because they take pictures on a smartphone - there is some terrific work on the flickrs for camera oriented phones. And, no, the point of owning a camera is not to show how clever you are because you navigate the menu system. The G85 is easy to use; that's a good thing. And I would expect the touchscreen quick menu system to be intuitive to someone used to shooting on a phone.

    • @hendryyyy1262
      @hendryyyy1262 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheGreatAmphibian i think whats bosco mean is its insulting to the camera... people can perceived it that the image quality of the g85 just slightly better than smart phone.. thats why only a person that shoot with smart phone fell the appeal to upgrade to g85.. its just me trying to interpret bosco words.. mybe im wrong.. but for me personally ive owns d800.. d500.. d3400 and a g85.. im shooting bride and wedding.. dont know it can be called a pro job or not.. but if im travel by my own.. having vacation with my family.. i ditch my other cmera.. im always take my g85.. its my first choice.. loved it for personal use..

      The Hybrid Shooter 16-50 + sigma 60?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      16-50 is ok for general use, but it can't utilize full potential of that sensor, I would choose Sony 50mm 1.8 OSS instead of Sigma 60mm because of image stabilization and better focusing.

      @muttyhc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From a cost perspective, yeah you're right. But as for the low light shot, a6500 is mind-blowingly better(G85 is not that far apart I know). So I think what I would do is to get the all-rounder G85 first (I do need that flip out screen), then later see if a6500 is really that necessary for my workflow.

    I feel your selling the g85 far too short, I use the G7 and have taken done great shots with it , have even done some portraits with my lumix 42.5mm achieving decent background blur /bokeh , and printed to A3+ with the quality retained, and I feel the g85 would be much better again given it doesn't have the anti alias filter and body image stabalization .
