    Thanks for confirming the use of the Shimano SM-BCR2 Battery Charger as a means of updating Di2 firmware. For some reason my laptop didn't want to play along, but I was able to upload the firmware and change settings from my desktop PC. Many thanks for clear and complete instructions.

    Gotta love it, that you JUST got a new bike and you are already creating awesome content of the tech used on the new bike. Really cool. Who would've thought 20 years ago, that one day we would be connecting our bikes to our PCs and updating the firmware on some of the components. Pretty crazy (and technically advanced) world we live in :)

    What’s nice about the wireless unit when you get it is the ability to send your gear ratio data to your garmin head unit. It will show what gear you are in front and back and after the ride it shows how many gear changes you made, some useless info. It can also show your battery level on the Garmin which is cool as you charge it so seldom, its really nice to have.
    Also check out the auto and semi auto features that are programable from the e tube software. In semi auto when you change front chainring you can set rear gears up or down to get a better ratio. In auto you only use rear shifter and front will change automatically to keep the ratio. In e tube you can play with when it will shift the front mech. Just wish there was a bit more options there. Quite nice! These modes are also shown on Garmin and changed via the junction box.
    Enjoy. I love my Di2

    Hi Shane, one little quirk using the PC connection, when all checks and updates are complete use the Disconnect Tab to disconnect the PC link to Di2, important step! I didn't do this the first time I connected by PC and I 'frooze' all components, couldn't re-connect, had to go to the shop to debug and re-install software/firmware. This doesn't happen with iPad...but I'm not an Apple fan...so , Disconnect the PC link then unplug the cable from the junction box... Happy New Year...great channel, love it up here in the northern hemisphere!

    For anyone interested in these numbers, I charted my Di2 battery decline curve over a two-month period with the following results starting with a fully charged battery (100%) and running it down to 20% (8363 total shifts; 976 miles; 55 hours riding time). The straight-line graphs for a fully discharged battery (0%) would have been close to 10,500 shifts (front and rear combined); 1200 miles; 70 hours riding time. Hours and miles are less relevant on battery drain than cumulative shifts since riding styles and terrain will impact shifting and saddle time. Data were collected on Garmin 820 head unit from 23 rides during a period of hot/warm weather (August & September) in southeast Texas (mostly flat) and riding with a group. Average ride: 42.4 miles; 363 shifts per ride (24 front & 340 rear). Bike: 2018 Canyon Ultimate 8.0 CF SLX Disc Di2 (new in June 2018) with Ultegra groupset.

    • @Tchairdjian
      @Tchairdjian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Denham thanks for the info. Obviously you must be using the Wu111 wireless module to collect that data. Someone said the wireless module eats up a lot of battery life (obviously as any radio needs power to operate and these things would be ON all the time. ) Did you notice this compared to a time when you didn’t have the module installed?

    DI2 is great stuff and I have used it for over 3 years. Instead of the WU111, I have used the MT800 XT display. This does the same job as WU111 (wireless unit), but shows the gear your are in and also gives a bleep when it is going to change the front derailleur. This is an awesome addition if you are using the syncro gears. Having 3 ports, also makes the wiring a touch easier if you are using sprint shifters or climbing switch.

Safe to say now thanks to this vid all my components firmware are up to date and I can now shift my rear cassette using those sneaky buttons! So thanks! Looking forward to hearing your opinion on the E-Tube wireless unit and whether it’ll be a worthwhile investment for me as well.

    Have seen a couple of posts about the first update of firmware over wireless bricking people's systems. There is a definite bug in the set up in that, the first time you connect the EW-WU111 and connect to it over wireless, if there is a firmware update available it will automatically try to do it wirelessly and that invariably crashes and "bricks" the system. However, like most smart designers, there is a reset possible, you just have to disconnect all the components; shifters from the function box and derailleurs from the derailleur and then reconnect them and it will reset the system. The idea that a failed firmware update would actually destroy a battery is a bit daft as it is just a set of instructions in the device. Safest thing to do is to ensure the firmware is updated over the wire using the charger before installing the EW-WU111. Rode mine out for 100kmsa yesterday and am super happy with it. There is a bit of lag between changing gear and that change being updated to the head unit display on my Elemnt Bolt (about 1 1/2 to 2 secs) so am interested to hear if there is any lag once you set up the 8070 hood buttons as shifters if it has to go to the wireless module, be read and then command the derailleurs. Am super happy with it though! (edit, just watched the rest and see there is no lag between button press and derailleur move, nice!)

    • @rein2523
      @rein2523 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      darryl roberts No, there is no lag when you use these as shifters. It’s just the delay in ANT+, the same as the delay of your power meter and HR strap to your headunit

    If one is looking for support from Shimano on Di2, they always ask you to connect the unit to the PC vs Bluetooth. You get more information from the PC software.
    Curious to see how much customization you can do with the A button on the Wahoo bolt.
    My right A button on my Garmin is setup to change screen, single tap forward and double tap backward. Left A button as a lap button, very handy for training, no need to take your hand off the handlebar to reach the button on the Garmin unit.

    Excellent. My Canyon Aeroad didn't come with the EW-WU-111 either. When I got it I put inside the frame by the bottom bracket. Apparently they can go anywhere in the system. I find the A buttons stiff to press so not really suitable for gear changing. Worth trying if you haven't done so already is Synchro shifting where you only use the RH shifter. The front derailleur shifts automatically.

    Nice Shane, always enjoy the little subtle things in ur vids mate. Favourite this time was the instinctive web search string, just caught yourself in time. Definitely curious to see what 'that' search would have coughed up. Early Di2 had a reputation in my group of issues on rare occasions for firmware updates so I've been wary about them (irrationally). But I'm keen to set up the A buttons so will try it. Cheers

  • @RomansFiveDotEight
    @RomansFiveDotEight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Have you enabled synchro shift yet?
    I didn’t think I’d like it. So for months I didn’t even try it. But once I did, it worked so incredibly well that I can’t imagine not having it now.
    (Synchro shift is basically an automatic front derailleur. You just shift with the right lever and as you shift into a harder gear, it’ll automatically go onto the big ring and back up two on the rear. So it’s the next available ratio, always the most efficient, never cross chaining.)
    Seriously. It’s brilliant. You can still manually control the FD if you don’t like what it’s doing. But I’d love to hear your thoughts on Synchro shift.

    • @hardboiledPhil
      @hardboiledPhil 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love syncho shift. I have the big paddles left and right for up and down (like ETAP) but then I still have the small paddles for overriding front derailleur.

  • @homesbydalessio
    @homesbydalessio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had the buttons activating the shifters for a while but found I rarely used them given your fingers are right next to the actual shifters when you are on the hoods. I think you’ll go back to them changing computer screens. I like the pressing of the buttons on each side to automatically change from big ring to small ring (and cassette adjustment) when coming to a stop.

    Not a di2 user, but I did pick this tip up from browsing cycling forums:
    Charge the battery via a pc instead of straight from the wall. For whatever reason, sometimes, charging from the wall makes the system think it has charged fully, whereas in reality it has barely charged at all. I’ll see if I can find the source

    I found myself compelled to update the firmware on my Shimano Di2 Wireless Unit (EW-WU111) due to significant battery drainage issues. It's quite surprising that Shimano continues to allow the sale of units that are essentially five years out of date, lacking crucial firmware updates right out of the box. With the firmware now updated, I'm cautiously optimistic that the problem has been resolved. However, it's ironic that a device designed to excel in wireless connectivity was, until now, performing poorly in its primary function. Kudos to Shimano for your customer excellence.

    A small downside of having the junction box in the handlebars (as opposed to under the stem with the older unit) is that you can’t use a bar end mounted mirror, since in Oz (and I suppose the UK and Japan), you want your mirror mounted on the right hand bar end.

      Posting as this might help someone out... I found the app failed to upgrade the same DI2 battery firmware when I ran it on my iPhone 8. I retried a number of times, each time it said it needed to recover but never finished (I waited hours...). For some unknown reason I then thought of trying the exact same thing from my iPad. Again, it spotted the incomplete upgrade started on the phone but this time it completed the process first time within a couple of minutes and I was up and running. iPhone 8, iPad Pro, same iOS version installed, same tube app version, different results!

    Hi Shane. I came across your awesome video by coincidence, as I was trying to figure out how to update Di2 firmware, but I was unaware that I could check the rear cassette, and the garmin pages from the upper levers. Now ... my question is: does my Di2 R9150 need the EW-WU111 or not to program the buttons on the levels? Thanks in advance.

      You can program them via the Shimano ETube Windows app and the Di2 battery charger plugged into the PC USB and into the junction port on the bike.

    • @gplama

      No. You can see % left when looking at the sensor detail in the menu, and you'll get an on-screen warning at 15% and 10% (I believe those are the numbers). Still no configurable battery level field though.

    • @ghostyjack
      @ghostyjack 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gplama Yep, it will show battery level and display your gearing info for front and rear. You may not get your gear info recorded though, at least you wont with a Garmin unit, not sure with Wahoo. Also there are some quirks with the wireless unit, when I first put it in my setup (mix of DA 9100 and Ultegra 8000) the wireless unit wouldn't seem to take the new firmware over USB and it would then drain the battery dry within 24 hours. Reading on the internet, this is not an uncommon issue. Apparently you need to change the BT pass code via USB first and then you should be able to hook up to the phone app and update it that way. This is supposed to solve the problem and will let the wireless unit work correctly from now on. Not done it yet, but am planning on doing it in the new year.

      @@ghostyjack I just installed a D-Fly unit on R8070, and I can confirm that my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt records the gear information (i.e., each data point recorded also includes the front and rear gear selected). For Shane, a good tip if you end up seemingly "bricking" the Di2 system when using the E-Tube phone application is to unplug the Di2 battery. This cured my problem when the wireless app temporarily bricked my Di2 system when updating the firmware for my D-Fly unit.
