    I haven't seen anybody's comparison video contain as many details as yours does. Kudos for being thorough not doing just a spec comparison like many others on TH-cam. Subscribed.

    Yeah I was absolutely gonna buy the 80d if it had 4K video cause I would love to have that auto focus for filming in vlogs, etc. Been using the gh4 and g7 but they definitely lack good autofocus in video mode. Interested to see how the a6300 stacks up with its improved af.

      +Suck My Mod Thank you for the comment. I have been trying to find a good resources to compare the 80D to GH4 and I get it that the GH4 shoots 4K but hearing a "real life" critique like the above was just what I was looking for. If the damn thing does AF well then thats a deal breaker for me

    I've owned two 70Ds and loved them. Thought about upgrading to an 80D but something not mentioned in the video is that Canon has changed the Menu System in the 80D. It is not the simple, easy to use one of the 70D. Canon has added sub-menus within the main Menu System of the 80D. That means extra clicks, extra searching, and takes more time. I'm glad I went to a store and played with the 80D and discovered this change. I love the simplicity of the 70D's menus, so no upgrade for me. The 70D is an awesome camera.

    I currently own the 70D and do quite a bit of video work for non-profits. I've been considering getting the 80D and using my 70D as a second angle camera. The headphone jack for monitoring and 1080p60 are really enticing to me.

    Pricing them with kits lenses (18-135), it's a $500 difference ($1799 vs $1299). So starting from scratch, I would definitely go with the 70D or another camera (especially for video).

    I bought 2 canon 80d,s 3 days ago,Me and my wife are birders,before that we had 70d,s.
    we found the 80d,s have a lot faster auto focus,and shutter noise is very quiet compared
    to 70d thats good for birding.For birding we use AV F/8 with one spot focus, shots seem a lot sharper also.The len,s we use are canon 100-400mm mark2

    Have just run into this question (Canon 70D and Sony a6000 shooter). Just tried out the Sony 70-300 OSS on my a6000 vs Canon 70-200 f4 IS. Sony 70-300 slow focuser on the a6000 (Canon 70D live view focusing with 70-200 f4 IS faster-a big surprise for me). I cancelled my Sony a6300 order, sent the Sony 70-300 OSS back and ordered a Canon 80D. Want to move to Sony but lenses still not there.

    I wish I had seen your video before I bought the 80d, in october 2017. I know the center focus point is off when I use my efs 55-250 is stm lens, at 250mm, about 1 foot. But shooting that lens at f5.6-8 may be of no consequence. I have no L series lenses because I am not so sure than my next camera will be a canon.

    Sounds like your epic shootout between the 80D and a6300 is close to completion, but I hope you stress the a6300 capabilities shooting with EF glass. I am very interested in the outcome of the comparison, but I personally am not interested in buying Sony lenses...

    The menu Microfocus adjustments is for the camera body to match the lens out-of-focal plane tolerances. I have a 70D, 7Dii, and 5Diii and all camera bodies had to be microfocus adjusted to center-line focus. Isn't that why the menu has this adjustment? Only one lens did not require any camera body MF adjustment and that was the Canon 70-200 f/2/8 L II, but was required when using a 1.4X teleconverter. Now if the MF adjustments are frequent or will not adjust for any lens, then the body should be sent back to the factory as the internal body focus sensor assembly has become defective. You can easily tell the difference when shooting in live view.

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should read up on why canon has that in the menu. It was never intended to be needed for new lenses or cameras.

    Fantastic video as always Michael. Sad to hear the 80D having the same focus as the 70D, to me that would be the only reason to upgrade from the 70D.
    Also as one of the people that got stuck with a lemon 70D and going back and watching you video about it before it is sad to see that canon did virtually nothing to correct the problem with a firmware fix. Mine went back to canon 3 separate times at a cost of over 150 dollars in shipping before they replaced most of the internal focus parts.
    Also PLEASE MICHAEL check the bounce flash in ettl mode on the 80D. I have yet to find one 70D that does not have a bounce flash issue, again something that canon knows about and does nothing for the people that paid 1K for a non focusing camera. There are many threads with thousands of relpy's documenting the canon 70D bounce problem and one even on canons own forum where a canon rep feels the flash should not have to expose correctly, just turn up the fel when you bounce flash.
    Basically any external ETTL flash on a 70 will always underexpose if you don't increase the FEL, but only when you bounce it.
    Does the 80D suffer this same issue?

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rubi Doo I'll look into it. So basically any speed light pointed up?

    • @OmahaWayne
      @OmahaWayne 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MichaelTheMentor Yes exactly. Pretty much any ETTL flash firing in Ettl mode will under expose on a 70D if you try to bounce it. According to canon that is acceptable, you should take test shots and adjust the FEL. Which works great if you stay in a studio. At an event it blows chunks :)
      Even though the same flash mounted on a rebel series camera will expose correctly in bounce mode.
      Again TY for the great videos you produce, I have subbed you for years because of the quality of your content.

      Rubi Doo: when I got my first 70D it had focus issues. I sent it to Canon and they replaced the AF motor. No charge, still under warranty. Perfect focus ever since. It's been such a great camera that I got another one. I sent it to Canon to be calibrated right after I got it and have had no focus issues with it at all. Sorry about your experience. Did you wait until your 70D was out of warranty to send it in for repair?

    I'm confused. At 6:17 a graphic pops up saying NO High End Video & Sports Shooting. Earlier in video it sounds like you recommend it for sports shooters. I shoot a lot of indoor High School sports & am on the bubble between 70D & 80D.

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might want to listen a little more carefully. this comment was in regards to what types of photography 70D owners should consider upgrading to the 80D. If the focusing systems are comparable, it wouldn't make sense to upgrade for sports shooting.

    Other reviewers like the camera store guys said the ISO performance is much better in the 80D. Better than the 70D and 7D II and pretty close to the 5D III. How can you say it is the same as the 70D?

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't look at or consider other reviewers results. I actually test on my own in in a way that measures each channel and visually shows the results as demonstrated by the chart on my blog.
      Both are very comparable up to 3200 - 6400 when the 80D kicks in an over-softening compression different than the 70D. Over softening at the loss of reasonable sharpness is not higher performance.

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Samtagri take a look...does the 80D look significantly better? Look at the black divider and how it gets fuzzy with more ISO: www.michaelthemaven.com/?postID=4039&70d-vs-80d-iso-chart-comparison

    • @morganfrowall
      @morganfrowall 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Samtagri It's not the iso performance that have been better, it's the dynamic range at base ISO that have been increased with about 1-1,5 stop. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon%20EOS%2070D,Canon%20EOS%2080D Btw Michael, as usual a great Review!

    hey do the canon 70 18-135mm kit lens the same as the 80d 18-135mm kit lens? if not whats the difference? and they 70d lens can be used on the 80d without a problem right?

    • @OmahaWayne
      @OmahaWayne 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geovanny Its the same exact lens. Any lens that can be put on the 70D can go on the 80D. Same exact mount.

    • @marcx9176
      @marcx9176 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geovanny It is actually a new lens with the same basic specs (18-135, 3.5-5.6). It has a new "nano USM" focusing motor which is supposed to be much faster than the current 18-135 while maintaining the smoothness of the STM used in the current 18-135. It has also been restyled, but no word on whether it is optically different: petapixel.com/2016/02/18/canons-new-ef-s-18-135mm-f3-5-5-6-lens-first-nano-usm/

    • @marcx9176
      @marcx9176 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geovanny To the second part of your question - yes, you can use the existing 18-135 on the 80D as it is an EF-S lens. You can use any EF or EF-S mount lens on the 70D or 80D (as well as the 7D Mark 2 and any camera in the Rebel line), which are crop sensor cameras. Only EF lenses can be used on full-frame cameras (such as the 5D and 6D lines).
      The new 18-135 is not cheap, so if you have the old one and you aren't worried about focusing speed, I would save your money or put it into a different lens (I have a T4i with the 18-135 and am looking at the Sigma 17-50 as a possibility if I upgrade to the 80D).

    • @GeovannyEntertains
      @GeovannyEntertains 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you for ur response, i bought the 18-135 for $269 on amazon b/c it was a "white box" version so as long as i can use it on the 80d i am good. Thanks!

  • @mountainhobo
    @mountainhobo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess the body and ergonomics are exactly the same? That's a pity, I tried 70D, and it was killing my hand and was giving me hand cramps. After 6D, that grip was too small and too short for my hands for any lens that would make the camera even slightly nose heavy. Nikon D7xxx is not perfect, but a lot more comfortable to hold. I don't want to buy an additional battery grip just to be able to use the camera. I like the features on 80D, the live view, dual pixel, etc., but poor ergonomics kill the camera for me. I guess I will wait until dual pixel and fully articulated LCD come to larger Canons (maybe next 5D?).

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mountainhobo 80D feels larger, with the gap between where right fingers rest feels more narrow than 70D.

      I'm not a big believer of spec sheet reading and Try to hands on test what I think my subscribers want to know.
      I'll have more data soon. Im not ready to say it's off, but I know for sure the focusing window per point is larger on the 80D, which means it can miss some precision type focusing tests. Kind of hard to explain without a demonstration.

  • @GustavoYmusica
    @GustavoYmusica 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I simply can't trust the center af point on this model line. I'm pretty sure canon did nothing to fix for issue with the misaligned focus sensor problem. Canon never fixed my issue and I had to go to best buy and do a shoot test to prove what was happening. They allowed me to return it but they kept the $150+ extended warranty money. I then waited and purchased an a6000 bbody open box with a Lens for $347 at the same best buy. What a difference in nailing accurate focus. The a6000 is absolutely precise for portrait work. Also, the iso performance is so much better than the 70d.

    Hey Michael, you mentioned that both cameras have a considerable amount of Moire. However, I would like to know: is the 80D any better? Recently I shot some video on my 70D and the Moire and Aliasing is absolutely atrocious, nearly unbearable!!

    • @MMaven

    • @Frank-Ding

    • @coolpras26
      @coolpras26 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which is weird and ironical since 80D has an AA filter, UNLIKE most of the Nikon ones which do not. Shouldn't having an AA filter actually cut OUT the moire? Nikon ones are more sharper thanks to no AA filter, but also they have less moire as well. So, this is a lose lose situation for Canon, unfortunately.

    • @Frank-Ding
      @Frank-Ding 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      coolpras26 unfortunately yeah that's true. I'm definitely no expert on this, but my guess would be that the moire isn't as much due to the sensors themselves as it is due to the algorithm used to pull information from each pixel during video recording.

    • @coolpras26
      @coolpras26 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frank Ding But the bottomline is, the whole point of having an AA filter is to cut out the moire. And if it can't do that, then what's the point? Because not having an AA filter makes the images a bit sharper as well. I was quite leaning towards the 80D(mostly for video and better focus system and the new nano usm lens) as compared to the Nikon D7200(which is sharper, better with ISO range, and better dynamic range overall). But this moire problem with Canon is quite a let down. Not expected from a camera which has an AA filter and which especially targets video enthusiasts.

      +Andrew Engle I've been experiencing some accuracy questions with my 80D too. I was able to shoot more consistently sharp shots with my t2i, though they were much noisier and worse in other ways. Sometimes I'll get perfectly sharp shots and then sometimes they'll just seem slightly off, even changing between shots as I hold down the shutter - and not using shallow DOF. It happened today at 100ISO f5.6 with the 70-200 f4. One shot from my sequence is sharp, the others are soft. Neither I nor the target was moving. I was using servo with back button focus. However, I just did the ruler test and the 80D performed well with all of my lenses.
      I'm reluctant to blame the hardware and I'm really hoping it's something I'm doing because I otherwise adore the 80D so far. I'm curious if other people are getting these results.

      +Glass Hammer Games my biggest issue with my other 80d focus is the huge center focusing square is not precise. its accurate just not precise to as small as an area as id like.

      The 80D has a different Menu System. Canon has added sub-menus which I don't like. May not make a difference to you, but to me it's just more fidgeting and more time lost. I've owned two 70Ds and use them more than my 6D. A young woman I know who is just getting into photography/videography was thinking about the 80D. I recommended a refurbished 70D to her, $750 with the 18-55mm. She loves it! Got it direct from Canon and it is like brand new. If I had to replace my 70D today I would do the same. All the best!

    10 years from now Canon and Nikon cameras sales will drop significantly seems only Sony does true value addition on their camera upgrades.A phone has 4k while canon cameras thousands of dollars are just stuck of HD recording so disappointing.

      +photoflex weddings and events it's already happening. Canon lost something like 30% of the dslr video market last year. Their lack of urgency to innovate and push when they clearly can has been disappointing.
