  • What do you pick?? Its a comparison between three machines: The new Roland TR-8S, the older (and my favourite) Roland TR-8, and the original big day king drum machine the vintage Roland TR-808.
    We'll take a quick minute to listen to some 808 beats on the new Roland TR-8S drum machine and compare it with the original TR-808 in which it is emulating.

    I have my TR-8S running through a tube compressor for warmth and it’s amazingly better. I’m able to squash it and really get the highs to mesh well with the mids and kick adding lots of glue. A much better solution than owning an old 808. Here is the compressor if anyone is interested. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ProVLA2--art-pro-vla-ii

    Great video. Used to have a original 808 but sold it to get a Linndrum Bought Rebirth’s 338 version in 1996 and wasn’t disappointed.But with current 808’s selling at high prices today which is hype, both the Tr8/Tr8s sound good plus you get the 909.

    Not sure about the tr-8s as I never used it but I think the trick with the TR-8 is too have the parameters pretty much on center to get something more like the original. Would be interesting to hear how the tr-8s sounds next to the tr-08 though. Good video thanks for sharing.

    I have the TR-08, TR-8 and a Digitakt. The TR-8 and Digitakt were purchased first and man, talk about buyers remorse.
    I've realized that I've been playing with myself, the TR-08 is ALL I need for drum sequencing and this dude have the original.
    Nothing program and groove like the TR-08 other than the 808. Roland burned me with the release of the TR-8S and the TR-08, but I'm very happy that the TR-08 was released none the less. I need to buy another for safe keeping.

    Know this is a little off the subject, but is still has to do with Roland anyway. Are you using ARIA MX-1 mix performer & how many? Or is that 3 TR-8's I see in the rig lol? Is it a slave to the Pyramid? I'm looking for a fx box with mixer style tricks up its sleeve.

    • @MRTUNA
      @MRTUNA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Johnson I am using the MX-1 (two of them actually- but I’ve also got two TR-8 machines as well)! And it is slaved to the Pyramid like you suggested, but it is also what syncs the all the AIRA gear and sends all the MIDI data to and from the Pyramid. It’s got some cool effects with some really unique tempo synced options, but it is limited as a mixer in some ways with no proper track eq settings and somewhat limited analog inputs. It sounds like it might really fit the bill for you though. I really have come to appreciate it to the point that I’ve committed to keeping them, unless something like an MX-2 might become available

  • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
    @RoomAtTheTopStudio 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The original sounds the best then the TR8S then the TR8. The 808 sounds a bit louder than the other two. I am looking forward to the Behringer RD808's launch as it's a proper analogue clone of the Roland 808 so it should sound as close as possibly another Roland 808 can. I've steered away from analogue modeling as much as possible with my hardware. For me if I want a reproduction of the analogue sound I can always use samples. If I want analogue then it's best I get the analogue that gives me the true sound. That's my personal preference though.

      You can't compare if you don't know the settings that were used in the TR8S and TR8. Maybe if you add a Compressor as the Master effect it will sound similar or better than the original 808. We don't know.

    I wish I could find an actual comparison of the clones over the years to the original CR/TR units. Simply try to make each clone sound as close as possible, then A/B the sounds and show additional tweakability for each clone sound. Even if it wasn't EVERY clone, at least do the most popular ones...

    One thing I notice about the tr-8 because I own one is that some of the tones are muted even at the highest volumes so you really have to crank it.

  • @kvmoore1
    @kvmoore1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    808 is much clearer and more defined. However, the TR-8S isn't bad either, with the exception of the clap. The clap on the TR -8S sounds very cheap and plasticy in this video compared to the 808. The TR-8 sounds the worst out of the three. However, I think all of this has to do with the settings for each of the sounds on each of the machines. I have a TR-8 as well so I know it is capable of sounding much better than the way it sounds in this video. I also think with some tweaking and effects (overdrive, compression, or transient shaper) applied to the clap on the TR-8S, it could probably get closer in tone to the original 808 clap. The reverb tail in the clap needs to be brought out more in the TR-8S's so it won't sound so cheap. The same goes for the clap in the TR-8 as well but the TR-8 clap will have to be processed externally.
    Regardless, I don't think the TR-8 or TR-8S will "beat" an original 808 in any side by side comparison. I have an original TR808 too. I'm curious of the new Behringer RD808 as well. I think it will at least give the TR-8 a run for it's money. I can't speak for the TR-8S's because I never touched or seen one in person. On paper, the specs look great!! I'd like to play with it's effects.

    It would be interesting to do a two video series. In the first one play the exact same patterns through each with the same tuning, panning, etc. and through the same effects chain (if any). Do it "blind"…just "Machine A" and "Machine B". Let people in the comments identify which they think is which. Take screenshots of the comments. Then, a week or two later publish the second video but reveal which machine is which. Compare reality to the predictions. I'm guessing all this "warmth" people think they hear in the 808 is just bias attributable to knowing it's the original. Therefore, my guess is the predictions would be all over the place. But take the screenshots so people can't edit their original responses after the reveal.

    • @matthewcragg3607
      @matthewcragg3607 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      …or avoid "Machine A" and "Machine B" which some may perceive as A = 808 and B = 8S (first letter for older machine). Do something meaningless like "Machine Buttercup" and "Machine Raisins".
