  • The Behringer RD-8 MK II drum machine compared to the Roland TR-8s.

    I have both of these machines - If all you want is an authentic 808 clone, and don't have a big budget, definitely get an RD8 MK2. If however, you have a bit more money to spend on a drum machine, and want "real" 808, plus a ton of other "real" Roland drums machines (and a lot more), hands down get the TR8S. One thing this video doesn't show is how TR8S can be tuned/customized - every one of those 808 sounds can be tweaked for tuning & decay & more etc. and can be made to sound very close to the RD8 (identical IMO - and also VS a real 808) with some minor knob twiddling. The TR8S also has a compressor, and many other effects to color the sound - RD8 has an "analog filter" which is cool, but more limited. Another thing to consider is how you will record these machines - TR8S has separate audio channels/output over one USB cable into your DAW (easy & great!), while you'll need analog outputs/inputs/mixer/DA converter to record the RD8 on separate channels (or even a stereo channel) into a DAW. Having said that, what I love about the RD8 is that it approximates the fun of programming a real 808 in a way that the TR8S doesn't - there IS a bunch of munu diving in the TR8S that I hate, and it can get in the way of being inspired/productive. For purely programming classic 808 beats, I will turun to the RD8 every time. But, it's just and 808 (LOL). That's good - but I think many people might want more - if so (save up) get the TR8S.

      Yes the TR-8s definitely has a wider range of functions and sounds. The menu diving on the TR-8s is there if you want to access the deeper functions for the most part. You can skip much of that if you don't need to access those. I find it to actually be pretty fast, even when going through the menus. I've used it so much that it just flows for me now. I find myself having to check the manual more with the RD-8. thanks for watching!

      This is exactly what I wanted to know. I'm looking at getting a Behringer RD-8 and the RD-9 which is in the ballpark of the TR-8S.... plus from what I read the TR-8S can play other samples as well?

    • @SamUrtonDesign
      @SamUrtonDesign ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can load your own samples into the TR-8S via SD card (you can't sample directly into the TR-8S). Chopping/editing them in the TR-8S is possible, via menu diving, but I've found that editing them before I transfer them in saves a lot of time & effort. TR-8S also has *most* of the other TR series drum machine sounds built in, plus a ton of other drum, percussion, effect noises, and even synth sounds - as well as the virtual FM engine (which sounds amazing). If it was me, and I wanted both 808 + 909 I'd go for the TR-8S.@@0x80O0oOverfl0w

    With this demo I must admit the RD 8ll is far better, but maybe the others tones have not been balanced correctly. I own the RD 8 original & I think it sounds pretty authentic & and does exactly what I want, right out the box, no need for any other clones. Also I like that each individual sound can be connected to an effect pedal or mixing channel or amp, if prefered & if you don't want the individual connections, then there's the one output jack to play everyrhing, not forgetting the headphone output. Masses of output options at an amazing price.

    RD-8 For The Win, hands down.
    BEHRINGER absolutely nailed it about sounding right everything. This is absolutely spot on.
    Some may say "obviously because it's analog" but all hihats/cymbals/... are digital on the BEHRINGER and they succeed to let them sounds WAY BETTER than ROLAND...!!
    What a shame for ROLAND!
    I mean who is supposed to reproduce better Roland's digital sounds than ROLAND itself with a more recent digital machine?...
    BEHRINGER. LOL.
    I've got a RD-9 and I think this is the best 909 EVER, including the original.
    Same story with the RD-8 MK2 to me.
    Not only you've got exactly a real 808/909 with same analog+digital circuitry, but plus you've got a HUGE expansion with very good new features, including MIDI of course...
    Sincerely, this is a dream come true, in serious good construction quality (perfect sizing for real live playing, 100% metal firm knobs, very tactile buttons, thick very tactile steps buttons, very clear lights with different colors per functions for each of lights...), and...................VERY VERY VERY GOOD PRICE.
    I gave my money to Behringer with pleasure.
    Last thing : honestly, we can't blame Behringer to make these machines, we were waiting those SINCE DECADES AND DECADES but Japanese brands never listen their customers...
    And this is a nonsense to me because Japan is struggling since decades and that was a so easy opportunity for them to make money...
    Why god why they didn't ?
    Fortunately Behringer did it.

      Hey there, just saw your question. It's one a lot of people have about these two. The rd-8 does feel more "loose" to me. They can both be punchy, it seems to be more about the difference in the character of the sound. The rd-8 just seems more edgy from the start and loose. Which I think is due to the analog design. Glad you like it and thanks for watching!

    Sorry to do this but the TR8S level is lower than the RD8. Not by much but enough. Once I level matched them it sounded quite a bit different. Overall I still prefer the fullness and overall ‘analogueness’ of the TR8S, but it is not night and day like it was before level matching.
    Of course with a TR8S you get waaay more sounds - and FM!

    • @deepsynths
      @deepsynths  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah the level matching is sort of challenge when you're making one of these videos with multiple sound comparisons. What do you match? The peak level, the average level, the perceived level? They're never all the same for different instruments on different machines unless you use compression or limiting. So you have to go for as close as you can get while still being fair to both pieces of gear. I go for a compromise of peak and perceived loudness on my studio monitors getting them as close as possible. Sometimes it seems as though it changes a bit after I upload to youtube because in the studio they're usually spot on. Thanks for checking it out! The TR-8s is happy to get your vote!

    Something here doesn't seem quite right, I'm not for one second suggesting foul play, but maybe there was a genuine mistake made while recording.
    My TR-8S sounds remarkably similar to my Tr-808, - the RD-8 mkii in these examples sounds much louder, almost to the point of having being compressed, when compared to the 8s.
    I appreciate the posting and time taken, but I do feel the level of the TR-8s is very low compared to the RD-8, - but still it might just be my ageing ears.
    One thing to take into consideration is the TR-8s is supposed to sound like a factory fresh 808 from the 80s, whereas the Behringer seems to have been voiced to have a more vintage sound.
    - Running the 8s through some balancing DI boxes and adding some very mild saturation will yeild very similar results.
    love to ALL, feel no hate
    Edit,
    In fact just applying the TR-8s Comp/overdrive effect to each instrument should probably be enough to give the illusion of an aged unit.

    • @deepsynths
      @deepsynths  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They were recorded straight through a UAD Apollo interface. I checked the levels and the individual sounds matched. The levels of the whole patterns would vary slightly but I decided to keep the individual sounds as they were instead of making another adjustment for beat patterns. For one, it helps the video flow better and it also shows a real difference in the 2 machines. As an owner of both I can say that they don't sound the same, especially the kick. I think that comes through accurately in the video. I like both machines, I'm keeping both but the RD-8 is definitely more present than the TR-8s.

    • @XanderEwald
      @XanderEwald 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      30 years ago nobody really wanted vintage analogue drum machines and synths. The early 90s were all about digital synths, workstations and samplers. Roland also never made instruments for niche audiences, but served the mass market. Their target audience wants the latest and greatest in music technology and does not care at all about ancient analogue machines. From Roland's perspective it makes no sense to re-issue 40 year old instruments to please a tiny niche market instead of focusing on their main audience into which they invested 4 decades of R&D since these classic boxes came out. So them re-releasing their vintage machines is rather unlikely.
