      She gets all the credit for eventually doing it, but this is edited. It took her some takes to understand and get it! Jacob's approaches are not normal, and they weren't part of Tory's vocab. But I'm sure they are now! She was in a MASTER CLASS! Great for her to put that work in. It's easy to get intimidated at times like this TRUST ME, I know!

    • @TheCharlieSmithChannel
      @TheCharlieSmithChannel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@edwindavis5468 no one is giving her credit for anything she didn't do. You must not know much about Tori if you think the end result was all Jacob's doing. Do you have any idea how mad it is to be able to just repeat runs like that back to someone instantly. That's an insane level of musicality. No one is claiming the arrangement is hers. I don't know what your point is.....

    • @edwindavis5468
      @edwindavis5468 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheCharlieSmithChannel I believe you waited to respond and be offended, rather than understand my post. Take the emotion out of it and hear my point! My only point was that she didn't hear it once and then nail it! There are obvious edits to this video. I'm also not saying she struggled and took forever to do them. I'm also a singer, and can do them. But because I don't think like Jacob I can't create like Jacob. But I can do what Jacob ask me to do. He didn't Sk her to do "the Tory"! He had specific things he wanted done AS A PRODUCER, and it was things she would not have done on her own! No doubt the things she would have done would have been good, she's very talented, but this is what Jacob wanted done, and the end results were what was in his head not hers! It was NO SHADE AT ALL to Tory, I was simply saying her repeating was not all hearing it once then ready to record! But I digress! Be blessed!

      I'd argue it's even more powerful in it's own ways. He's getting so much better at balancing and making the melody it's own powerful thing. I love moon river and others but I feel this arrangement better shows his ability to back others or himself, whereas the others are great as a full experience

    Oh my god, your reaction is just like watching myself both the first time I heard the Yebba version and this one with John Legend and Tori Kelly...waterworks! Jacob Colliers genius as a musical avatar is one thing, but I honestly believe he is a healer. The endorphins that kick in when you hear and feel the choirs that he builds to these astounding soloists just make the whole body shiver with goosebumps and the tears flow like a river. Fun fact: the end of Yebba’s solo is actually from her song “ my mind” Jacob did a cut and paste so that her solo had an end because remember, for those who saw the original with just Yebba, it cutoff right she sang “lay me down”. Someone once called Jacob the “Albert Einstein” of music. I’m really starting to warm up to that belief.

    The Logic session is bananas!
    When he comes in with his harmonies after Yebba, it reminds me of the score Herbert Stothart did for The Wizard of Oz. Jacob's knowledge of theory is truly a divine gift. I imagine when he sings, he doesn't run or use vibrato because he already hears all of the harmonies in his head and would never do anything to step on any of those notes. He is one of his generation's greatest producers and his work will be around for several generations...I pray.
    Imagine if he had done the score for Wonka!!! 🤯

    Great video -- I shared many of your same reactions! Love this! To your point at 11:30 -- Jacob draws a big fan base from the world of jazz precisely because of his ability to sing like an instrumentalist. He has very deep theory knowledge and his vocal runs are incredibly exact and purposeful -- very unlike many of today's pop singers. That descending harmonic minor scale he shows Tori is a perfect example. Another fun example is here: th-cam.com/video/pK_k-4AdzyE/w-d-xo.html

    Your reaction at 3:28 could only be done by people who know the original (short) piece that Jacob did with Yebba's version. Like a little child so excited to finally have the finalized version. After hearing the short from Jacob and Yebba for so many times and it cutting off... and it finally been completed by some awesome editing of bits and pieces of a different Yebba song by Jacob... just gave me so much joy. And then Tori's bit was amazing as well.
    There is now even a longer version (8 minutes) of Jacob and Tori doing this part instead of the short. Its on Jacobs channel as well.
    Great reaction.. one that I can relate to :)

    That was funny to see Tori's face when Jacob did those crazy runs and then realizing that's what he wanted her to do. Of course that's right in Tori's wheelhouse.

    Great reaction. I have, perhaps, an unpopular take. This is incredible. I feel like Yebba and John exquisitely captured the emotion of the song, their embellishments were beautiful and always fit. Tori's best singing, in a way, was when she first came in, her warmth and straighter tone perfectly embodied the "sail on..." part of the song. When she started with her runs, which, don't get me wrong, I love and in a way I'm so here for it, the emotion of the song fizzled for me. Something about the overdone-ness of it, or perhaps the arrangement or production really just washed out the emotional intensity, I feel like they should have made a choice to perhaps do one or two amazing runs, timed to release something in the music. Anyway, not taking anything away from the stellar talent and execution of these artists. In a way, I feel like this is a general issue with Tori K, such an amazing artist who sometimes leaves me feeling flat. Just my take, I respect everyone's opinion.

      And I reslect your opinion too Elina ☺️. I do know what you mean to be honest and you can see it in my reaction. When Tori started going IN I switched from overflowing emotions to just jaw open bewilderment at her technical prowess. Personally I don't mind that. With some artists you know you're going to be getting a showcase and that's fine for me. If anything I like it more because I got a bit of everything in one song haha

      I think you're totally right about that switch being there, but maybe it's fitting for the track to move from being unsure and poignant into confident and strong like that? It seems to follow the emotional arc, from meeting someone who needs help where they are with a quiet voice into building them up and showing them the strength you're going to use for them.

      Agree ! Much prefer that sweet poignant hauntingly beautiful first part of Toris session. But of course Jacob was the "director" if that's the right word lol.(telling her what to do?)

    The MOST glorious recording in 20 years ! I actually get high on it .
    it's "almost" as good as Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings ( the most gorgeous piece of music ever written by human being ) For those who have never heard Adagio , Smoke a little weed .. go into a darkened room . put your headphones on ..type in the title here on TH-cam . lay down on a sofa , head on a pillow . lay back .. press the on button . .. It may be the first time music has made some of you weep .. trust me you will . you will feel as if the universe sweeping over you. give it a try

    Tori’s level of talent just doesn’t make sense to me. She’s so underrated and I just can’t understand why. Here’s what’s so crazy about this for me: usually singers who can do awesome runs can do them naturally and smooth- it’s a second nature to singers like Tori. And to that note, the concept of “learning” runs is pretty much absent. They can just feel what notes make sense and sing them without any technical breakdown. And breaking them down also would generally keep them from sounding rehearsed or rigid. But Jacob literally broke down all of the runs you hear Tori sing in this. Down to the single note. And these runs were INCREDIBLY complex. To not follow any major or minor standard scales and involve diminished, augmented and demented notes with 7ths and 9ths etc. makes that natural component of singing runs sooooo much more difficult. But still, she hears them once or twice and is able to reproduce them like it’s nothing. The runs themselves are genius and then her ability to reproduce them like she does is just insane. Absolutely insane.

      I genuinely wish more people understood this. It's one thing to create your own but to have the ability to listen to and replicate someone elses complexities with SUCH EASE is absolutely astounding.

    • @acafella11Music

      @@divaluxe_ yeah, exactly. His arrangement of those runs is ridiculously impressive but he likely did some over some time. She’s replicating that complexity in the fly. It’s insane.
