I come back to this every once in a while. To see someone so genuinely emotionally gripped by a piece of art, a performance like this. No sense of irony, no apologies or excuses for truly caring about the music and the artistry, no fear of pretention. I live through your pure awe and joy here. Just a lovely moment to have witnessed.

this is the first time i've gotten to watch someone's first reaction to Jacob Collier, and I can see why you get excited. I wish I had a more musical background to better appreciate what was going on sometimes, but even with my limited expertise it's still a lovely experience.

As a jazz pianist....I know that to be a phenomenal jazz pianist is a life-goal for many. It is one of the greatest things to aspire to on this earth. For Jacob, it is one of the tools in his box.

To be honest, the first time I saw him be this good at piano playing, I thought to myself: "why even bother practicing anymore? I'll never be this good..".. it took me a few weeks to get over that feeling 🤣

@@hvanmegen for me the worst part wasn't seeing him be amazing at piano, it was seeing him pick up 8 other instruments and being in the top 1%, if not 0.1%, of players in all of those as well. It's like, if I can barely play what he can on guitar, my instrument, while he plays just as well on so many others, what's the point of me trying

That is exactly how it sounds!
A few notes if you haven't picked up on them since. Harmonically and Theory-wise, unquestionably a genius. Not just Rick Beato's son's level of perfect pitch, but perfect micro-tonal pitch. He essentially can change to any key, at will. His mother, and grandfather, both noted violinists, and his mother raised him from a young age asking him constantly, "how does that SOUND, that PITCH that HARMONY make you FEEL." He, with no exaggeration is the first human being raised his entire life to interpret everything he heard form a violin to the "ding" of a microwave as an EMOTION. So he thinks of all harmony as emotions and improvises with them as directly as anyone could musically to "paint with emotion". You should check out his Logic Pro walkthroughs of his songs with up to 500 tracks of vocals... Those of us lucky enough to follow him from the beginning have truly been able to witness something akin to once in a generation genius arise...
He is immensely talented. But musical craftmanship isn't really his thing. His songs have nothing to them

"nothing to them" is clearly a troll comment because even bands or artists I don't listen to don't have "nothing to them". But to each his own. Clearly time for you to change channels.

Jacob Collier's music sounds like it's dipped in black treacle. If you refine your songs that much by compressing harmony in-between single every pitch and note, you end up with less harmony. Jacob is the kinda person that should experience more in his life before making music. He should do what he's really fucking skilled at, like music theory.

Mr. Henny, I have to say that I come back to this review time and time again. Being a trained musician myself, my husband and I met at Berklee College of Music in 1980, and for years we always marvel at the new artists in each generatiion that arrive on the scene with vast talent. This however is something different. When I first heard Jacob's song Once You, I had to listen over and over, becuase, number 1, how could a mere child write something this beautiful and thought provoking and 2, sing it as if he had been on the planet for 60 years. As you read through the comments the emotion he brings to the surface in people is palpable. People on the brink of the despair, people who have experienced loss and find his words so comforting and nostalgic. The more "pop" community can tend to be dismissive of him and write him off as someone who plays over peoples heads, and pokes fun for his enthusiasm. Jacob has a child-like quality as if he was allowed to develop in Peter Pan's world and was never forced to conform to societies expectations. This scares "those" people who want someone who is going to swear every other word and show wormen as objects. It's pure fear of fascination and people who don't have that can sometimes want to spoil it for those who can see it for what it is. Pure Genius. Thank you for this riveting and emotional review. It always makes my day to watch you.

Jacob fixed me. I was spiraling down when I first "met" him on youtube. I cried for hours and then I started climbing back. It was a miracle. His music feeds the heart and tickels the brain. This combination is irresistible.

I just discovered him last week, and can't count how many times I've spontaneously cried during the exploration. It feels like a divinity flowing through him has reached in and touched, and maybe even activated, a divinity in me. What a gift.
PS... thank you for providing such a beautiful narrative to celebrate this with (it was my first time to hear him do this one).
I'm not sure if it's been commented previously, but this performance was pulled from an absolutely amazing livestream where he performs this and a few other songs and spends about 20 minutes showing how he puts together vocal arrangements. He says some incredibly kind things about people he works with, and also casually mentions that this performance of "Fix You" was his first time playing it on the piano. My mind was irreparably blown.

as a guitar player is amazing how we are allways told to treat the instrument like a singer while soloing and playing melodies and jacob does the exact oposite with his singing
I wouldn't class myself as jazz fan, but from what I have seen from Jacob Collier suggests he is operating on a different musical level to everyone else on the planet. While not demonstrated in this song, his understanding of vocal harmony is pretty extraordinary, so you have a lot to explore

@Sam Yaza One thing I like to say when I explain to people how good at music Jacob is is that he is much better at music than Messi is at football, Djokovic at tennis, Usain Bolt at running and LeBron at basketball. Jacob's talent is much greater than any of these other guys' at their respective field. The only person I can think of who might be comparable to him is Einstein.
I would say I am very good at music, I'm very talented (at a professional level), but this guy makes me look like an Australopithecus, LMAO. I wish he fathers 200 children, so the musical talent pool on our planet is dramatically increased.

Always a treat to see someone’s first experience of Jacob. Enhanced enormously by your obvious expert musicialship and bare emotional honestly. Wonderful stuff!
He won the ABRSM gold medal for singing (best of the uk best in formal music examinations). It was singing that got him into harmony because of our unique ability to pursue micro tonality The vocal folds are one of our greatest gifts and Collier has forced a thorough reappraisal of their capability. His facial structure also gives him great pharyngeal space.
He comes from a line of professional musicians. One of the familys hobbies is singing Bach chorales.
When I was watching this reaction, I wanted to scream this very thing to the vocal coach through my computer screen! The fact that Jacob won that award tells you right away that he was gifted vocally. My husband who is a musician always says to me, " Jacob's best instrument is his voice. He's a singer first then an instrumentalist." Not to say that his playing isn't off-the-charts, but his vocals are just a notch above all that.💕

I filmed a reaction to Jacob's Bleak Midwinter today....and I fell apart again! He is killing me!
I drove to Nashville from St Louis to see him back in 2016. I stood against the stage as one person commanded not only every instrument on stage, but each person the room. He is all of the music possibility in the universe, poured into a single human. He came to show us all that we’ve been underestimating our potential and to reveal what can be achieved. None like him spanning 500 years in either direction.

I’ve always found music teachers have the best reaction to Jacob Collier. I think it’s because they are knowledgeable enough to realize just how goddamn special he is. He is truly the musician’s musician.

These are the exact words I have used to explain Jacob to others. I am not a musician, but there is a musical quality to what he does that touches you to the core. This vocal coach was reduced to tears and is subsequently in his next 2 reactions to Jacob's videos. Some have criticized Jacob's lack of 'content' in his songs...and if that is the case, he makes up for it in EVERY other way!!! Actually, come to think of it, I'm not sure the world is ready for both!

"Stunningly musical" is not enough to describe Jacob. I am notoriously stingy with praise, but Jacob is truly a musical/creative genius. His understanding of theory is, well... beyond. He often plays with micro-tones, "audio illusions" with asynchronous time signatures, etc. A true autodidact, and creative explosion. You will enjoy exploring his work.
you can call him all those things, but he's absolutely not self-taught
@@georgeaiken2965 Perhaps I should have said "mostly" self-taught. Based on interviews with him, and his interesting instrumental technique, there was not a significant amount of formal training - it's quite obvious.

I've been listening to this reaction since it was first released. I have learned a lot musically on how I will describe his ways of singing. You described it perfectly! The way he uses his voice is really more like a horn instrument. Instead of having a piano adlib, he used his horn-like sounding voice to give life to the adlib part. Such a wonderful rendition as well as your reaction to this rendition.

The vocal run at 7:17 is my favorite part of this cover. It's a beautiful melody, and there's something about Jacob's whimsical smile as he does it that makes it feel so playful. And the smile on John's face really made it look like he was having fun. Idk it's just such a nice little human moment.
I really enjoyed your honest reaction and will certainly subscribe to your channel. Jacob is very highly regarded as an absolute musical genius by some of the worlds top musicians (Quincy Jones, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Eric Whitacre, the list goes on and on). This cover of 'Fix You' contains a lot of improvisation, he rarely plays a cover the same way twice and that even includes the basic chord structure, which he can flip around at any moment. Do yourself a favour and explore his music more, it's a treasure trove of mindblowing harmony and rhytmical concepts. Listening to his arrangement of Moon River will definitely set you on the right path! Hope for more Jacob reactions in the future!

I think that a large part of what makes Jacob Collier so special is his utter humanity. He truly seems to be a beautiful person making extraordinarily beautiful music. Even highly complex arrangements such as Moon River or in the Bleak Midwinter are not simply displays of compositional genius. The sublime skill that he has is used in the service of musical/emotional communication.

I'm a huge Jacob Collier fan and was familiar with the video you reacted to before seeing this- and your response gave me an even deeper appreciation for Jacob's performance. I love when someone who is very good at something encounters someone who is truly genius and sees it IMMEDIATELY and then struggles to explain to those of us who are merely average what the heck they're seeing.

New subscriber. I am a vocalist and as I watched with you had the exact same emotional response. There’s an indescribable element to Jacob that I haven’t heard in any other composer ever. Every chord with every note he sings makes you feel. Emotionally feel. That’s what makes the tears flow. That’s what makes you immediately remember those that have gone before you.

Jacob was performing live online for an event which was at 2:30 am, his time, after a long and tiring day.

If you are in awe of Jacob Collier, then you have something in common with Mr.Quincy Jones, who signed him when he was a teenager. The rest is history, (and with 5 Grammy's, jacib is just getting started...git a way to beat the late great George Solti). though...). Interesting for a English singer to be signed by Quincy Jones.
He has a natural cheekiness and does not take himself too seriously so enjoys himself as much as his Audience.
The performance to watch is his live cover in concert of the Beatles "Let it be" in Newport in Jul 2022. A magical performance.
