    I thought I’d prefer plain old Mixolydian however your final solo convinced me that Mixo-Dorian is where it’s at. Great demo of combining two scales to create a very musical hybrid.

  • @Funkrocker81

    I like it, that you now also completely name the notes. Most (amateur) guitar players think that they don't need to know their note names, see the guitar as a collection of fretts with numbers and wonder, why they get stuck and don't understand theory easily. Reading music is also important but a different point...
    Good work!

    • @5meo
      @5meo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i agree! i think it's really important to name the notes and the scale degrees. it also helps people like me who are coming from prior experience with other instruments, in terms of more easily grasping what is going on musically and incorporating it into my understanding of the guitar.

  • @calenlas99
    @calenlas99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Other modes work as well to achieve different effects. For example, the main riff in the Grateful Dead's The Other One is an Emaj-Dmaj Mixolydian progression. For the first introductory solo Jerry uses E Dorian, then as the song progresses and gets more psychedelic, he switches to E Phrygian (with occasional major 3rd) for the classic Spanish sound. Lots of fun jamming with these.

    HA! Just watched "Truly Understanding MODES...PART 1" and dead chuffed with myself, I understood it ~ even had a little strut across the room to celebrate. Then I watched this and my head exploded again [makes a right mess].
    It's not that you are unclear, far from it. I'm going through that process where as soon as I've understood something, I find the next concept that trips me. This is not a problem, but a presented opportunity. Like I've gone through one door, and presented with a flight of stairs with an even bigger door on the top.
    Actually quite exciting. Thanks for putting all this together.

    Andy Aledort ran a 5 Month GW column on adding the malor third going down the register but not on the way up, Your video brought a good perspective on why. Thanks again - Mike

    Really important lesson here😁 This kind of playing is what starts to seperate diatonic, sometimes blan or predictable playing, to a more flaverable, spicy, interesting musical statement. Going deeper into the unpredictable then, we could also incorporate in an A Mixo jam; Em, F#m and Bm pentatonics too. Great lesson stitch, this is the juice, Brah🤘

    ok Stich...Just watched this, which is three and a half years after posting. Glad they're still up. Question, and I hope you check these old vids, about how the modes relate. D maj scale = A mixolydian, the notes are exactly the same. A Dorian is the same as D maj, except for the flatted third. Since all modes are built off the parent major scale, you can just start and stop on your tonal center, here A, to get a mode. Is it helpful to think of this all as the D maj scale, just starting and stopping on A, and/or changing the third when you want? Seems more straightforward, but maybe I'm missing something?

    OK, 1st, awesome vid...great explanations...i am still getting a grip on the modes...i made a connection when you were combining mixo and dorian...please let me know if i am on the right track...i hear a lot, that guys like clapton, mix the major and minor pentatonics in their solos...and it seems to me that the major pentatonic is similar to the mixo mode and the minor pentatonic is similar to the dorian mod, with the 3rd being the predominant difference....and when you are dorian centered in a solo, you micro-bend the minor 3rd towards the major 3rd (mixo) to give the blues feel when the I, IV, and V chords are all 7th chords...any feedback is appreciated...cheers!

    Thanks for this lesson. I think I get it. I've tried playing Mixolydian scales over Ionian progressions, like 1/4/5, and they don't really work. Does that make sense? Mixolydian scales should only really work over Mixolydian progressions? And what scales, other than Ionian, work over typical major 1/4/5 progressions? Or will only Ionian scales sound happy over Ionian progressions?

    So the A minor pentatonic already has those notes G and C#, C# being the flat five so I guess I'm talking about the A minor blues scale. So if you were to play a minor blues scale over a mixolydian progression, then it would also be OK to add in notes from the major scale/major pentatonic? I have found adding the note F# to sound very nice combined with the A minor pentatnoic, because it's in the A major scale.

    Great lesson BUT! could you actually break down the Mixolydian scale? I picked up the Dorian scale yesterday and banged away on it until I felt like I have a handle on it.
    I then picked up an “E Dorian” Backing track on TH-cam and played it, added the “Pentatonic” scale, then the “Blues” scale and had a heck of a lot of fun.

    I love your lessons cause you manage to be simultaneously accessible and academic, all while showing really practical, really cool techniques. Question: do you sing your notes while you solo or do you let a mix of muscle memory and sensibility take over? Been trying to learn to sing my notes to guide my soloing. So far it's really really difficult but I'm prepared for a long road so it's all good I guess. Not very happy with how I sound but I guess I gotta suck before I git gud :D

    Hi Ian.. thanks again for everything,you are such a great teacher, i have a question : can we use mixolydian and dorian (or any of them) when the progression DOESNT start on the 5 chord?and how? .. i have another question too:) .. are DORIAN and MINOR PENTATONIC the only scales that we can use over a minor jam ? i mean in blues and rock music

    Awesome lesson as always and one which just opens many possibilities by just using a flat 7th and altering the 3rd half a step. I'm assuming this would work for a major chord in both dorian and mixolydian but over a minor chord would need the flat 3rd as in dorian?
