I have this personality flaw where whenever I stop getting better I lose my motivation instead of trying harder, and I pretty much quit playing for a few months until my missing playing overwhelms my lethargy brought about by my mediocrity. This video just broke me out of that lethargic state about two weeks into it. Thanks for being awesome as both a guitarist and a teacher.

Agree completely, Chuckle. If an almost-intermediate player can practice their way through this and have these light bulb moments, I can't think of a single other video on TH-cam that can get you from this level to the next. I've improved more in a week than I did in the past year. And all the other videos that seemed too advanced are becoming within reach.
Sometimes I experience this rare, unique and wonderful phenomenon where I genuinely believe I can see directly into someone's soul. And their soul communicates with mine in such a way that I instantly gain a complete and total understanding for who and what that individual truely is and why they are here. And you sir, are as genuine and wholesome as any that I've encountered. It was an absolute pleasure to cross your path.

Love how he says “this probably doesn’t sound very good”. Sounded great! Exactly what I was looking for. Solos like this are a groove, taking us on a trip. No extra outlandish tricks and excess flair to distract. Just a straight up groove. Love it!
Couldn't agree more! Also there are different types of solo used at different times. What we just saw played by the excellent Mr Stich wouldn't sound so inspiring if used as a solo in a stadium rock gig (All the bells and whistles were missing for that) , but any kind of smaller, more intimate setting live or on a recording it would sound incredible!
I've underestimated the giving nature of people. This is the 1st video I've ever viewed on your channel and I am awestruck by the information you wish to convey through your experiences and mistakes, only people with a humongous heart can convey such information casually. Arpeggios. Tried to understand them several times and gave up. When you showed the g and c forms of the E and A it suddenly made sense!
There chords that connect scales, and 5ths, and 3rd and Octaves and 7ths...

Yup chord tones are where it's at. I been working on them for a while. I run through all chord tones in first 6 keys in every position, everyday. It has really opened up the neck.

The old way of learning Triads is having illustrations of dots on a fretboard- this here is the way to go. Arps just add the rest of the strings. Learning this way is fun and you can instantly apply it in other progressions. Good stuff!

I have been trying to learn how to play blues music on my guitar for years. I have been watching you videos for years also. I must say this is the best video you have made yet explaining how to get the 12 bar blues sound. The greatest point in my opinion about this lesson is to not look at arpeggios as isolated, up/down the neck exercises as that approach really just reinforces a “disassociation” between the why and the how; it makes learners feel that they’re somehow irrelevant or superfluous, but when described this way as, “bits of the chord you’re throwing out to the audience”. You can really see they’re the roadmap to locking into whatever you’re trying to play over.
I know I watched this a year ago when it was new. I have progressed, thanks in no small part to your tutelage. I am now at a point where I am playing chord tones in my solos. I would encourage your subscribers to rewatch your videos from a couple years ago again

this lesson helped me so much I didn’t realize that I actually already know a bunch of arpeggios inside of of all the caged chords I just always only play them as chords!!!

Finally a teacher that acknowledges, "If it's too fast, use pause and rewind". An advanced lesson can become a beginner lesson with pause and rewind; it doesn't work the other way around!

Your lessons have been invaluable and I’m still in a place where you just keep tossing me stuff and a percentage sticks. Going to be a long enjoyable road. This vid for some reason really clicked. Months of caged to pentatonic but still in a comfy box, this for some reason tied lots together.

Such an incredible important video. After essentially learning the pentatonic scales as shapes alone, I felt ever solo I played sounded the same. I thought I needed to go down the path of modes as a way to make my playing more interesting, but this CAGED approach is helping me be so much more melodic. And the real kicker is that it's even fewer notes to pick from than the pentatonic scale but it still opens up to so much variety. Thanks so much for putting me on to this!

How do you always keep your guitar propped up so effortlessly at ~45 degree angle?

I put the bottom thick curve of the guitar on my right thigh. If using a Les Paul or similar guitar I use an L jack so it rests on my thigh as well. Then I grab the upper part of the body with my right arm, biceps area, and the friction of my skin holds the guitar in place. Hope that helps

Really good video Ian, I think you finally got it through my thick head (God knows I've seen enough of your videos to have understood by now, but I'm just thick I guess) that seeing the chord tone intervals in the inversion you are playing is massive, thanks alot, this has really helped me refine the direction that I need to take.

I can't tell you how much it has extended my musical horizons. I've been practicing memorizing and emphasizing those cord tones and using the major the pentatonic on the tonic chord as you suggested. Then I discovered what you probably already know: the magic of playing major thirds with the chords.

I was a D'Addario guy for like 15 years and didn't want to jump on the Ernie Ball fanboy bandwagon but a few months ago the local music store didn't have my usual strings in stock, so I went with the EBs and I'm glad I did. They really are better strings. I especially love the Turbo Slinkies for E standard. The perfect blend of 9's and 10's imo. Light enough to bend and play effortlessly but still just heavy enough to be able to dig in without your strings flopping all over the place

Superb guitar instruction video! You clearly present a straight, understandable, practically approachable path to what can seem a hopeless tangle of scalar underbrush and obscure terrain to players trying to really learn the fretboard enough to begin improvising rather than simply following tabs.

For sure shout out to ernie ball. Inexpensive strings that are great. Especially when you are looking for something specific. I needed something i could play jazz on my solid body and didn't want flats. Found them with ernie ball rock n roll strings. For less then 5 bucks a pack, c'mon that's where it is at!
