The Well of Barhout, a giant hole located in the desert of Al-Mahra province in Yemen’s eastern region, is surrounded by mystery. Local folklore claims it was created as a prison for demons. Mahra’s geological survey and mineral resources authority says it has discovered “strange things inside” and has called for further research.

@JeffRobe's Wardrobe I think firefighters in my country are able to go 200 meters down to rescue victims. So I suspect that there's a lack of motivation from the authorities in Yemen. Otherwise they'd have gotten to the bottom of the hole already.
@JeffRobe's Wardrobe Longer range drones exist so idk why that couldn't work. A diving pod or sth similar could work too, but ig nobody really wants to spend all that money on just a random hole. Plus, if the locals believe going near brings bad luck, I don't think they'd be happy with all these efforts...

We could easily fly the drone down the well to show you what’s inside, but that would ruin the vibe of this video.
There's a video of a bunch of Yemeni guys trying this but unfortunately they lost connection with the drone as it went deep into the well so they had to bring it out. They didn't see anything strange or supernatural though.

Probably. They mentioned a bad smell. It they lowered someone into it it would probably be best to wear a diving suit to be safe.
*WORTH MENTIONING* Using a hand held mirror you can direct sunlight into the hole to see the bottom of the hole. This will work on 4" and 6" well casings too. We used a mirror to shine down a 250' deep 4" well and no matter how powerful our flashlights were you couldn't see down the hole but the reflected sunlight worked like a charm.

@@MishimaBloodl1n3 It was basically a learning experience showing it could be done. We saw the water level inside the hole and could see the well casing had been driven down to the bedrock ensuring it was sealed from rain and surface water entering and mixing with the well water.

The sides of the entrance look like it was carved away straight down. Could be an ancient cave system created when the desert had water, could be a type of sinkhole, or perhaps it was a sulfur pocket that pushed through the earth and escaped. However, there is still a side of me that hopes it could be something more mysterious like a long forgotten city underneath, or some type of crystal cave, or some other phenomena.

I think there’s a lot of technology now that would allow us to know what’s in the cave without endangering humans.
The surface channels indicate that it obviously acts as a drain for flood water, being at a local low-point. I've seen this type of hole formed as a solution pipe, resulting from slightly acidic rain dissolving the sedimentary rocks, particularly when there are softer rock layers below.

You need a visa from the Yemeni embassy in Algeria, then fly to Yemen by air to the city of Aden and then from there to Mahra, a complicated, tiring and risky process. Because of the ongoing war in Yemen.
When the war is over, your access will be easier.. you are always welcome

Thtlat does not look like a crater. Its probably just sinkhole
They tried a drone and the drone would not decend at all. And previously the tried sending somone down and apparently was eaten but komodo looking reptiles
Its most likely a sinkhole, by looking at the hole, it may also be a source of water for some people, might as well keep it as a well

This is a sinkhole. The surrounding area around the hole is showing a depression. Overtime it will start to sink in as well. This is a huge hole underneath.
@Nemesis look closely around the sinkhole from the above drone aerial view. It is quite clear. Its a big mystery which scientists can study and give their opinion.
