    When I got my blue heeler 8 months ago, everyone warned me that I was creating an insatiable athlete by playing with him everyday, multiple times a day. Him being my first dog, I wondered if there was any truth to this (and even becam a bit nervous), but when I really thought about it, I realized that after our morning play sessions he was just a more calm and receptive puppy.
    Now he's 10 months old and goes after every ball as if it were the last one on earth, but when we get home, he is ready to relax.
    Don't get me wrong, he is still a ball of energy, even after our play sessions. After a small break, he can play again and again and even go on a long walk, but if I don't get him worked up, he is happy to save his energy for our next activity while lying down on his mat.
    Your channel has been an invaluable source of information and it is a huge reason my puppy isn't a feral beast. Thank you!

      Good work - I can relate, my Beagle is 10 month old now, and same story with him. The more he gets those opportunities to get his energy released in play sessions, walks, training sessions and zoomies (plenty. of. zoomies), the more content he is throughout the day. Wow, a Heeler as first dog, that's not the easiest breed I hear, but seems you're kocking it out of the park, inspiring to read.

    I wish I had found your channel a long time ago. Real life training tutorials, no more watching unruly pets suddenly become docile whenever Cesar takes the leash 😄 I'm a dog-walker and I'm going to try using your methods to help with a pair of young and energetic pups. They're smart and usually well behaved, but they tend to pull when I have them on the leash and they get into a barking frenzy wherever they see another dog. I love these pups and I've never formally trained a dog before, but I've committed myself to making this work. We already do treats/enforcing good behavior. They know sit and stay, but it seems that I need to be more consistent with the treats when I have them on the leash. Thank you Zak!

    Your videos give me hope again! I recently rescued my sisters pup (18 months) from going to the shelter Because of some behavior issues and boundaries, he was facing imminent rehoming from. Various trainers suggested training with shock collars and the prong choke ones. This was extremely disappointing I don’t believe in whose methods. I don’t want a robot dog, I want a dog who is curious and happy. I want a dog enjoy will chase rabbits at the park but can recognize by my time and command it’s time to stop. I want a happy fulfilled pet who listens when he needs to but is happy. With these videos I know i can get my pup to where he’s discipled but without sacrificing his little personality. This has me motivated to try again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!❤

    I liked how you addressed the exercise topic of avoiding keeping your dog in shape. I find that it's not really much different as far as the amount of effort we as humans need to put into the exercise. My dog just doesn't get out of breath as easily, can swim farther safely, and won't be too tired to enjoy the rest of the day just because we took a morning walk. Health is crucial to not only us, but our pets. Anyone who would advocate for anything less is, in my opinion, lazy at best. I really love how the camping and such is giving your dogs such variety with their experiences and getting to play and learn in new environments instead of just hanging out at home. Good job actually living life for both you and your dogs :D

    I have been absolutely loving your TH-cam videos, they are teaching me so much! We are in Western Australia and have adopted a “Kimberley Special” from S.A.F.E. In Broome. She a five month old puppy with heaps of energy and personality. I’ve been training her using your methods and we will take her to doggie school in January. We’re going camping with friends in our camper trailers in a few days, to Kalgan River in Albany, so your videos showing your life on the road are very helpful and inspiring. I’m so glad I’ve found your channel, thank you so much and enjoy your travels.

      Also, reading the comments re tiring out the dog and over exercising, when we are finished our afternoon training andsessions I give Nala a little raw bone and she is happy to chew and chill for ages, this shows we are finished with the afternoon fetch and training sessions, we give her a bone and she immediately “chills and chews” 😊

    It was really helpful to see Inertia demonstrate the target behavior before you showed how to work through it with a puppy. Sometimes with a puppy it's hard to envision what it can or should look like, especially when it can take so much practice and time to get it there. Veronica did amazing resisting the "wolverine" 🙂

    Zak, me and my puppy love you for showing that not everything goes always great and that this is not a big deal... Just something that needs more time and training. And I love you for reminding me that I need to be patient with my puppy and not be angry if she doesn't behave - because she still behaves like a puppy is supposed to, it's just us humans who don't always like that...

  • @janhankins911

    People actually argue that keeping your dog healthy and in good physical condition is a bad thing? How could that ever be a bad thing? Can't wait to see the next video. I learn a lot from your videos when things go well, but I learn the most when things don't go so well. So it's better for me when things don't go well for you in your training? I'm so glad you show training in "reality" and use a dog that doesn't already know how to do the behavior you're teaching. This allows people to see there are steps along the way and that you can't necessarily skip those steps and shows people that training doesn't always go as smoothly as some folks on You Tube make it look. It's discouraging when people try to train and they're expecting things to go that smoothly when they don't, they think they're doing it wrong or that their dog is just "dumb". It's unlikely that either is the correct interpretation. So it's really helpful to see that it isn't always smooth sailing with no "turbulence" along the way.

    I find that a lot of people assume that small dogs don't need a lot of exercise, that they are incapable of it. Barring dogs with breathing difficulties or heart issues, small dogs benefit greatly from exercise and considering some have large appetites, it helps keep them trim.

    I'm always careful with exercising puppies. While their growth plates are still forming they should not be doing excessive repetitive running or jumping. I've had a lot of puppies owners tell me they will exercise their puppies (mainly just by running with them or fetch) for over an hour even multiple times a day and their pup still had energy. My advice is to find the balance in play, training, mental stimulation, and relaxation for your dog; taking into account their age and breed or breed mix. Play is great for bonding and I like incorporating training into it when I can. I love enrichment & mental stimulation and I truly believe you can satisfy your dog more when providing some kind of natural instinct into a game or puzzle. But also teaching your dogs how to decompress/relax is an underrated skill and super important for puppies that need 16-20 hours of sleep a day.

    This video is great! I'm hoping yall can do a video on working with your dog's underlying emotional state when they aren't doing what you're asking of them despite doing it in the same situation previously. I'm thinking of situations such as asking your dog to go into their crate which they are normally quite comfortable getting into on their own and your dog seems to avoid you and refuse despite having been recently exercised, fed & watered, pottied, etc. In my own situation, I'm having trouble getting my dog comfortable with wearing a harness despite her seeming plenty comfortable with her harness for months prior. I've been trying different styles and fits to see if the problem was chaffing or general discomfort wearing her harness and it hasn't helped much. I tried working on her potential sensitivity to touch around those areas and haven't found her to have any new sensitivity. I've been trying to desensitize her to her harness by gradually exposing her to it and me with it as well and have found she's perfectly comfortable around it. It feels like my dog doesn't want to do what I ask of her own agency rather than a response to an environmental or communication issue.

    Can anyone tell me.... did I miss Veronica's DNA reveal? She reminds me of the Collie/Papillon mixes I saw this weekend. What an awesome combination! I'd be quite happy for one of those beautiful dogs to find her way into my life. A touch of Basenji would be an added bonus for me. I'm just fascinated with that breed; but I would like for mine to be a mix.

    When I started training my Border collie I gave her an hour a day( she was between 6-7months of age) but as she got older I had to do more and more and more it got to a point where we will do an hour of fetch and an hour of cycling and another hour of training throughout the day. It was not getting easier she became more destructive and easily stimulated. She was off the rails. Then the pandemic hit and we were located in our house for weeks. She slowly started to calm down and because less destructive. But her reactive behaviour remained. She is getting less reactive and becoming more reliable. But over exercising is a thing I believe giving a dog 1hour of physical and mental stimulation combine is the best especially if you do it in 10min bits.

    as far as the exercise issue is concerned I think people view it as an all or nothing scenario when it is not. I absolutely exercise my dog, and she gets tons of mental stimulation as well as basic training every day. However, the issue I see most commonly is people who don't do any mental stimulation but feel like they MUST walk the dog "3 time a day for an hour" plus an hour of fetch just so the dog can be tired out. My BC mix is in excellent shape and we do many dog sports, but at home a 10 minute training session and some games a couple times a day is enough on our rest days. Some people literally do create an athlete who needs more and more exercise to "wear them out" as they grow their endurance and the human can no longer keep up and provide the amount of strictly physical exercise needed to exhaust the dog.

    On the fitness issue, I’ve had 4 border collies. my current one is 8 months and I’ve been more active with her and exercising her more than any of the others but I find her much harder to settle and calm down/rest when she’s inside. She’s always on the go and doesn’t seem to want to rest until she’s back in her playpen. I have wondered if this is because she’s getting much more exercise than the dogs before her so instead of calming her down it’s increasing her stamina and making her energy inexhaustible. Would love to know if anyone has thoughts on this.

      @@judithtrigg1694 love it. Thank you for sharing. I have found that my older border collies learnt (to a reasonable extent of course) how to adjust to my/my family’s lifestyles so maybe I should try to meet her in the middle and find a pace which works for both of us. But I too have experienced my 8 month one getting more and more wound up then more she plays.
      I have a 9 year old border collie too and the 8 month old is harassing her non stop. Have to separate them. Do you have the same issue with yours?

    • @susanollington5257
      @susanollington5257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m no expert but it’s entirely possible that 1.) your dog is just generally more high energy than the others, 2.) you forgot what your other dogs were like at 8 months, as younger dogs are a lot more rambunctious, or 3.) the exercise is helping keep her healthier than your other dogs
      I don’t see any of those as bad things, as Zak said, your dog is happy and bonding with you when you exercise and play more together, and you both becoming happier and healthier, as your dog gets older she’ll slow down like your older dogs, but for now, enjoy all those bonding experiences that will last throughout her life even when she’s old and doesn’t have the energy anymore 😊

    Exercising your dog and getting them tired is good, but some should also be taught how to relax without loads of exercise beforehand. A physically tired dog may not be mentally relaxed. You might end up creating a fit athlete that needs peogressively more and more exercise the fitter it becomes to be able to settle inside. It's worth mentioning that sometimes simply exercising may not always be enough, and add in the relaxation training is very helpful. Especially with the working breeds 😉 (or on sick days!)

    My biggest annoyance with the owners of small dogs is the assumption that it's cute when they bite, attack people and other dogs, and apparently crap all over the lawns of random strangers and the sidewalk. I guess being small makes all of that behavior cute, in their estimation. I'm glad that you will be training the smaller breed dog in the same way that you trained Inertia.

      How old are you now? I'm afraid I have to agree with your mom. Leaving a puppy alone that long just isn't fair to your puppy. And adult dog could be left for that long, but not a puppy. You'd need to arrange for someone to come over and let your puppy outside to go potty and take the puppy for a little walk. That could cost a lot of money (and depending on where you live, it could be hard to find someone to do that). You'd need to arrange for something for your puppy to do while you're gone and that would mean you'd need to buy or make some mental enrichment toys. Plus, you'd need to confine your puppy when you weren't home so you'd need to purchase a crate (or exercise pen) and a nice soft bed to go inside of it. Again, that can be expensive. I know what it's like to want a dog and not be able to have one--I went through that as a little girl. I wanted a dog, my mother said "absolutely not". Looking back, I think my mom was right.

      You can’t have a puppy right now, as the other person said, but maybe you could try for a different pet? I don’t know much about other pets, but a snail, hermit crab, or fish might be a better option until you’re a bit older to pay for some things yourself, or your parents don’t go to work in the day as much, you’ll just have to find a way to wait

    @Swowboarder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is what I aim for, but time is the big enemy. Puppy needs 16-18h of sleep. I notice him being awake for too long makes him overstimulated. So I have to pick my training moments carefully and monitor his sleep to maximize the effect. On top of that, you can only walk your dog 5 minutes per month of age (at a time) and after a meal, you have to take it slow (risk of twisted stomach). And I have not even began to sum up working hours, managing your household and so on. Nonetheless things are going great and these videos have been very helpful

    So does this method work for a Great Dane adopted from the shelter? I think he hasn't had a lot of training He was brought back twice. He knows come to a degree, and big separation problems! But ,if there's a squirrel, or the resident outdoor cat, I can count on getting pulled, to the ground, like three times now...
    He loves to cuddle on the couch, but outdoors can be sketchy. If he even sees another dog, or animal for that matter, he goes bananas. We don't have a fenced yard, so he has to be on a leash, otherwise I fear the worst ...THANK YOU

    • @susanollington5257
      @susanollington5257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This can work for your dog but as you said, it’s harder outside!
      Start indoors, doing the same activities Zak was doing
      If throwing the toy is too much, try just placing it on the ground, or using a treat if that’s less exciting at first
      Slowly build up from there
      A great way to transition from inside to outside is to then start practicing staying at doors before going out - Zak has a few different videos on that!
      If your dog is really struggling to focus it can be helpful to stay in one place for a good 20 minutes until your dog is able to focus on you at least when you have a treat, then try starting the training
      You’ll pick up on all these nuances if you watch enough of the backlog of videos Zak and Bri have released! They even have episodes on working with untrained shelter dogs that they were doing just before this series!
      If there’s anything you should take away from my comment it’s that a lot of things will work if you take them in small enough steps!

    How about for a dog that gets so distracted and stubborn over something she sniffs out side. To the point of completely ignoring you? And inside all she does is wag her tail at you. I haven’t been able to get past this

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay, so what's wrong with her wagging her tail at you? I'd take that! As for sniffing outside, first, dogs need to sniff. So let her sniff some. Having said that, I know you can't stand there for 30 minutes while your dog sniffs, so there comes a time when it's time to stop sniffing and move on. And getting her to stop sniffing can be a real problem!! You'll need to try a number of things to make YOU more interesting that what she's sniffing. A really high value treat (chicken, hot dog, cheese) may work--don't expect her kibble to be more interesting--it isn't. A game of tug of war may work. Her favorite toy may work. Asking her to do a couple of her favorite tricks may work. The solution is to make yourself more interesting to her than what she's sniffing. And it isn't always easy to find the thing that makes boring old you more interesting and exciting as sniffing where a dog peed! So you'll need to try some different things and see what works for her. Best of luck.

      @@janhankins911 thank you!! I love your videos. It is very cute when she wags her tail. But when I do something like “come here” not so cute 😂 I will definitely try to find something more interesting. It’s hard because she is a poodle. She also has a sensitive stomach and can’t have a ton of treats so that makes it even harder. She is also a very spoiled puppy and she knows it 😂

    I would really really appreciate a response, I have watched your videos countless times and tried everything over and over again! It is not working, the main thing I am trying to teach my dog is to come when called, she is an older dog about 4 years old and I got her as a rescue. I have tried everything in your videos, then I resorted to an e-collar, when the e collar is on she listens but she seems terrified of me now and does not listen if the e-collar is off. Then I went back and tried your videos again... part of the problem is that she is not! Food motivated or toy motivated or anything at all, if she feels like she is expected to do something that she does not want to do then nothing works! and it just isn't working I don't know what else to do

    I've heard you mention over jumping or being cautious of puppies jumping around. Whats the reasoning for that? Can they easily injure themselves as a puppy by jumping around? Thanks!

    • @susanollington5257
      @susanollington5257 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Puppies haven’t developed joints, depending on age they may barely have joints at all! While they are developing it’s important to be aware that they’re quite fragile - it’s less the jumping than the landing that’s the big problem
      Some dogs, like border collies, can also have genetic predispositions to hip problems and so it’s important to be vigilant and not go too heavily on high-impact movements like landing from a height or at a strange angle, and make sure you keep an eye on any pain they might be having in the hip area for instance
      Hope this helps!

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're likely the distractions are just too overwhelming for your grandma's dog. Start with MINOR distractions (that she can easily ignore). ALWAYS set the dog up for success (you don't want to set the dog up to fail). Once she's mastered leaving minor distractions, gradually (with the emphasis on gradually) make the distractions more difficult for her to ignore. Don't be afraid to go back to a previous step and add smaller steps if you need to.

Not to mention the fact that your Collie attacked a German Shepherd at a dog park (the fact that you even went to a dog park is just horrible). And your Collie couldn't even heel after 18 months even though it's the smartest breed in the world.

Get a pet rock. Do they overfeed them too to keep them obese so it's hard for them to run away? Absolutely weird mentality

    How could anyone think that not exercising your dog is a good idea. I have a foster right now who came from another foster because he was "wrecking" her house. He's never wrecked a thing at my place. My fosters get play time, backyard time and two good free walks every day. I am in the best shape I've been in years and this little dog who is supposedly so destructive is completely mellow! You get from a dog what you give. You give no exercise you get bad behavior. You don't have to be a genius to figure it out.

    Also your comparison of stating people in the public who use “force” and not let their dogs “sniff” while you guys are in the middle of butt fuck nowhere Alaska filming a dog video about what is essentially just training basic commands in a new environment and ensuring your dog has cool environmental socialization is so stupid lol. Of course “violently correcting” a dog is not necessary.
    The literal only thing you positive only trainers do is conflate an aspect of dog training to its absolute worse.
    Such close minded people, like you, are a true detriment to society. It’s almost as if you can’t use positive reinforcement, as well as negative reinforcement or positive punishment.
    And then you state all these claims about studies that are of such low quality it makes people who know what a confidence interval, or hypothesis testing, literally chuckle.
    Cool place, nice dogs, but your bashing and extreme conflation of dog training is complete non sense.
