That famous "Do you know how smart I am in Spanish?" moment of Gloria's lives with me
Rent free, I swear
Yess I have a friend that speaks Spanish and says the same thing people treat her like she's dumb and shes not
I swear
@@August-30047 story of my life.
gives me chills honestly
Gloria queen of keeping her Colombian roots & not disowning them
and despite the number of times Claire and especially Jay discouraged and shamed her!
This is very interesting. Please elaborate on why you like Gloria. I loved the show, but I have to think twice about watching in again, precisely because of Gloria.
I am Colombian, and I feel that Gloria treats the real Colombia the way Jay treats Gloria's Colombia.
@@alovce2839 I’m Colombian too and the struggles that she goes through, like having to learn English at an older age, translating everything in her head from Spanish to English, reminds me of my own family. She is proud of being Colombian, encourages Manny to learn more Spanish and doesn’t try to eliminate her culture while trying to assimilate to life with her new family. She’s not the perfect kind of representation but she’s better than most that I’ve seen in media.
@@REALLYGIOVANNA Thanks for the reply. And I agree with you on every point. Gloria does care about her roots and culture.
@@alovce2839 same Colombian and was like yay a Colombian got an acting job boo they speak to her like my exes family spoke to me….like ur ur body
I knew Phil Dunphy was stan-worthy when Claire told him to look at Haley’s “short” skirt and all he said was “it looks cute honey!” ended purity culture right there.
i mean to a degree i do understant the being against the ''short'' skirt if she was a minor (i dont remember her age in that ep)
@@weychill1279 she was 15 I think
@@weychill1279 yes but how exactly is that the minors fault? Maybe stop sexualizing young girls ….It’s just a skirt
@@inkubator320 the point of her using the skirt was to be ''sexy''.
until a couple seasons later when she lost her virginity and he literally referred to her as broken for it😭 one of my least favorite scenes of the entire show
I'm honestly amazed Phil never cussed Jay out or got physical with him even once. the man treated his son in law like garbage and Phil remained nothing but kind towards him.
Phil is a kind man.
Phil was one of my favourites
Remember Phil kinda bucked up to him during the later seasons😂
I remember when Phil punched Jay in a boxing match like season 3
He actually did in a boxing match at a kids birthday party but they had big gloves on so it wasn’t that bad
Cam’s actor being straight is the equilibrium to Barney Stinson’s actor being gay
this is the best comment i’ve seen. i love you for commenting this
lily deserved better. and, as a latina who has never stepped foot outside of south america, the xenophobia towards gloria definetely took me out sometimes lol that episode when jay assumed gloria could speak to a portuguese speaker cause it's "all the same"......................... that said, i still enjoy the escapism of the show. it has literally nothing in common with my disfunctional family, so it's fun to enjoy a "healthy" one.
I completely agree. It upset me how Lily’s Vietnamese culture didn’t really get enough focus and it also upset me how Jay could be so casually xenophobic to Gloria. But I also agree about the escapism. The show has its problems but it’s still an enjoyable sitcom
I agree with your comment about enjoying the escapism of the show. Same.
Omg I never realize.thqta why I love the show, to see a healthy family 💕😊😊
@@smallgreenlimabean they sort if tried a few times to reach her culture, but it never really became a thing
It was a racist show against Hispanics
My issue with Modern Family was how Lily was raised, the show never explained why Cam and Mitchell wanted a Vietnamese child. There was an episode where Lily thinks she gay because she’s confused and instead of handling the topic of nationality and ethnicity, the show instead sets up this scenario where Cam and Mitchell make a scene in a restaurant because their conversation is taken out of context by everyone else and in true Modern Family fashion the topic of Lily’s ethnicity never comes up again.
that episode was so painful. It took me two weeks to finish bc I could not handle it.
the whole episode about them not knowing about her culture was weird like how are you gonna acknowledge its an issue in your show and then not doing anything about it again? i really hope it didn’t affect the actress that much because she was treated like a whole guest character in her own show
@@sophie-rd9oy that girl got a whole check she is fine.
@@db200508 money doesn't fix everything. she could still be mentally affected by this.
@@deborah2763 that scene annoyed me. They tried to make Mitch and Cam say offensive things about the LBQTIA+ community but it didn’t help. I tired of let’s forgive white people for their ignorance because they didn’t know they were being offensive yet they knew they were when people stared at them tho...
as a colombian, i hate how the writers always wrote her memories from colombia as violent or like whenever they tried to talk about her "colombian" culture its something so random like damn they didnt even try
literally anything Gloria said abt colombia was used as a joke -_-
literally
@Shaniquequa Eakin right!! the fact the writers don't even realize how harmful the "spicy latina" trope is hurtful and has impacted how I act to this day /: I get that it's a comedy show but "jokes" where it's just making fun of gloria and her family is so painfully unfunny.
YESS
ik like im not colombian im from brasil but still... to know that this is the way latinos are portraited even in a so called "modern" show is just infuriating
The writers will pay for what they did to Haley’s character. In my head she’s still with Andy and isn’t a mom idc😙✌️.
YES I hate Dylan
period dylan was the fucken worst he was so annoying
Dylan had the IQ of a goldfish and Haley deserved better! if the writers wanted to do that whole "they're just like Claire and Phil" plot it would've made SO much more sense if it was with Andy. just like Phil he loves kids, he loves his partner and he loves his job.
She had better chemistry with Andy anyway like some of these people are idiots
@@gen7576 I KNOW we had so many examples about Phil and Andy being the SAME PERSON
Every time you say "Cameron" I remember that his sister's name is Pameron and I lose my mind.
YES hahaha
The thing that botheed me the most with Gloria was how hard they played on the "Colombia is a violent place where everbody lives on a farm sorrounded by animals" thing. Because yes, we've had a war going on for a couple of decades now in partly thanks to the US taking their war on drugs to our country, but that's like having the ONLY gringo character in a show talk about school shootings everytime he is going to reference the US and discribing his home like a place where he had a pet bald eagle or something
.
yeah that with the episode when she became a citizen and how they framed that kinda rubs me the wrong way
Yes! I’m latinamerican and found that so xenophobic :/ Those scenes were painful to watch
also it was insensitive towards the actress as her brother died in a shooting in Colombia while being involved in drug case so to give her dialogues like that were just idk...icky
I hated how whenever Mitchell or Clair talked about there trauma with there father jay and how it effected there life and whole entire world view , He just brush’s it off or acts like they have no right to mention it because he’s trying to take care of manny or joe(and tbh he didn’t do that well of a job with manny)
It’s also cool to see how Claire and Mitchell started families with people that are so openly affectionate in their relationship and unabashed about their childlike interests because Claire and Mitchell get to relive their childhood and see how their husbands are great fathers and love to be with their kids.
It’s sadder when you think of their mom too and how he’s all they got to help heal from their childhood issues
He did a great job with manny
The one gripe I have with Phil is that in the first season he’s constantly drooling over Gloria and Claire is so upset. I also feel like that doesn’t suit his character at all tho so idk why they wrote him like that
literally what I was thinking, those moments always made me feel weird.
Yeahhhh that really felt out of place for his character.
it was multiple times mentionned that Phil loves woc
Phil gives me the vibe of that dad that comes across as easy going and good with his kids but completely emotionally distances himself from his wife & lowkey resents her. I’ve met husbands that have one face for everyone else & another for their wife and it’s manipulative af and I don’t trust it.
Claire didn't even seem that upset which I thought was so weird, she was more like "Omg Phil is being so annoying" when realistically most people would be extremely hurt.
they fully ruined lukes character. him in the early seasons when he was like a kid he was hilarious. young luke and Phil are my favourite characters
Luke in the later seasons is so hypersexual I hated seeing him regress into that kind of a person growing up
I don’t think they ruined his character but just let him exist in the back
@@goober926 he starts sleeping with 40 year old women and a some point says his type i girls is 'do-able' it was just weird
Exactly tbh I get that he’s a teen but they basically turned his character into a dumb pervert
@@goober926 YES i always thought this, they turned him into a creep!! that time he went to a womens march just to get a girl 🤢
cam has his funny moments especially earlier seasons but most of the time he's so manipulative and oversensitive gets mad and blames mitch for every little thing it gets annoying like the episode where he faked a breakup to see which of their friends would cut off mitch? so gross
no fr I watched that episode where their friends thought they broke up the other day and I was so shocked like that’s a sick thing to do 😭 idc if we’ve been married for years if I ever learned my partner did that I’d divorce them fr
That’s why PHIL and not Can is the best character
Yes I was so mad because he never actually apologized for the break up, he never promised he would clear it up with his friends, it was just agreed upon that Mitch is the crazy one and that was that. I hated that.
honestlyyyy i thought that out of all the couples mitch and cam should not stay together. all they did was argue and manipulate each other and play ridiculous games to avoid being honest. and they never actually got past any of their relationship obstacles they would just patch it up for the episode but it would be the same thing the very next ep.
YES I TOTALLY AGREE he's the only character i just don't like (i mean he's good for the show and im glad he's there overall but still). like the episode where he tricks mitchell into letting him fire the wedding singer by like, humiliating mitchell over something he knows mitchell is insecure about
Andy and Haley were the only good choice when it came to her boyfriends. They built each other up, encouraged each other, and I imagined them being a power couple to have fun together and live their best lives. That is how it canonically ended for me 😌
They were supposed to end up together, but Adam DeVine had to leave the show because of scheduling issues
Yes they were perfect! He was like the Phil to her Claire and I loved that dynamic
This is probably an unpopular opinion but I don't mind the fact that she ended up with Dylan. Dylan and Haley seemed to grow when they were apart from one another. I thought Andy was pretty flip-floppy with his girlfriend and Haley at the beginning, like I wanted Andy to break up with his girlfriend and end up with Haley as well but then the whole cheating situation happened and when Andy found out his gf was cheating on him too he was like "I can't believe she betrayed me" when he was doing the same thing. I don't think Andy was as stable as people made him out to be.
@@ikindoflikemangoes4951 you know what, you make a very good point! Also why were the writers so obsessed with making Haley part of an adulterous relationship??? But I get what you're saying, Dylan is not the absolute worst but I just felt more chemistry with her and Andy
and they don't have an inappropriate age gap!
Phil, Gloria, Lily, Cam, and Haley were the stars of the show! They understood the assignment!
Lily?
Not Lily plss
Lily, Phil and Gloria are top 3 for me! all you Lily antis in the replies can leave!
You're an excellent person!!
Agree on Phil, Cam and Lily. They were so funny and Lily really stood out amongst the kids because she stayed funny.
I met Ty Burrell (Phil) in 2014 in D.C, he was walking with his wife. He was a sweetheart and didn't mind taking a picture. He's genuinely down to earth.
UR SO LUCKY
The way of Jay Pritchett makes fun of Gloria and Manny’s Colombian culture makes my ass itch!! 😤
and then when he does the bare minimum he's rewarded with everything. (like when he goes to buy them grapes for new years)
the fact that he was praised for learning a few spanish phrases while gloria literally suffered trying to learn english fluently which she succeeded in doing but still was made fun of bc her accent and grammar weren’t perfect
Frrrrr. When jay does that it really really makes me mad. You can see in some of the other things he does for Manny that he truly loves him, like when he tells him Javier brought the limo in S1 but then he goes around and disrespects Manny’s culture, a part of who he is? Not cool.
@@lillitaft9195 Gloria works 90% while Jay only works 10% for this relationship
Not your ass😭
I think a big part of the reason Lily’s character was skimmed over a lot of the time and not given enough air time and character development was because her parents (as in the real life actress) didn’t want the show to affect her childhood too much and kept her in school and limited her amount of set time. But it was still disappointing that the writers didn’t seem to even attempt at exploring her character more.
That’s actually very nice and responsible and nice from her parents, the writers were very lazy though, they definitely should have come up with something to help her character
@@rosalierowan i mean she was sort of a jester and like ''dark'' stuff
I feel like they could have still done something with her. they had a storyline where she scared claire and they could instead have had them actually bond through scaring people or halloween. that could have taken the same amount of time
when i saw the title i was already like: "she's gonna slander Jay so hard" and loved it
it was truly beautiful
it’s not slander if it’s true

@@ariyatabassumabdullah1143 Jay got on my nerves *many* times throughout the show's run! 😒
This is one of the best sitcoms ever. But obv I have some problems:
- Mitch and Cam's parenting and their "beef" with lesbians
- Jay's boomer humor
- Alex being ignored and being miserable EVEN when she is pursuing her dream job
- Haley's wasted potential
- Phil being too nice (he is my fav) and that weird episode with the black female client
- Manny being a jerk when he is a teenager
- Luke turning into a pervert
- the THREE Dunphy children dating wayyy too older people
- Gloria and the fake Colombian traditions
- Lily being treated like crap
Something else, the rumour that Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen don't get along which has been debunked several times.
yess the black female client episode was not needed and weird
Yes the beef with lesbians!!! It feeds into such a stupid stereotype and over all the whole show puts lesbians in a very bad perspective
And THATS on period
@@rosalierowan yeah, I got tired of male gay characters doing this, they can be huge sexists too
Not going to lie i didn't like Alex as a character
I stand firm in my opinion that if the writers were so desperate for a pregnancy arc, it should have been Alex.
Haley was the lazy choice because even though her promiscuity is implied, I can tell she's smart about how to be safe sexually after quite a few years whereas sexual relationships are relatively new for Alex and even though she is incredibly well informed, her eagerness about this new lifestyle would have more likely led to an oops-baby.
And it would have been interesting to see her navigate either choosing to abort the pregnancy or be a young mom pursuing a career because it would have opened up a door for us to receive insight into her mind and what she wants. But that's just me :)
Sounds way better to be honest.
Hmm, I like this take. I think it would’ve added layers and so much good drama!
The way this dynamic has actually played out in my family is sending me and you’re completely right
wait.. this is it... just flip the script instead of hayley going through it...
OMG YES WOW
Phil is the first DAD character to make me feel like i actually have a dad. I love his character so much.
Everyone just overlooked the fact that Alex was dating Luke’s friend Reuben who she admitted was 16, while she was at least 19 in college
Ew wtf
the fact that jay went to the vietnam war and he never talked about the trauma that it would have caused him. they decided just to make him a bad person without growth. he could have learn more from the diversity of his family
Omg this annoys me now! There could have been a moment with him and Lily early on where she's discovering more about Vietnam (maybe not the war) and asks her Grandpa like "I heard you went there on holiday" (not realising why he was really there) then they could have explored his experience a bit more and made him more likable

NOOOO, NOOO.
Perhaps that’s why him and Mitch almost never get intimate in the show
@@msasake how do you think actors work? eric(who plays cam) is just an actor who acts the script. cam and mitch never get intimate because ABC(network that aired modern failmy) most likely wouldn't let the writers write those scenes, because god forbid they air gays cuddling on a national television of a cristian country
Yup has a wife and kids and DOESNT even talk like that in real life LMAO
@@hiimcihy exactly and like the cartain scenes they did get intimate where so special because we reaplly need that representation on national tv

@@j_ea8238 yea😢
i hate alex so much i'm sorry
I have a bone to pick with Jay because the way he treats Gloria, her Colombian culture, Mitchell (his gay son) is so ignorant and nasty.
Agreed! It's so annoying and kinda drags down the show
I’ve met a lot of white people who are like “yeah my grandparents are racist and homophobic and that’s just how they are and we love them” and it’s so startling. especially the people who almost brag about how racist their family is and they’d be like “yeah if they were here right now they would probably call you slurs” like huh? 😟 but when you ask them what they’re doing to educate their family or how they’re getting them to stop they go silent
the way the writers kept trying to push this narrative that Jay was becoming more accepting as well... I don't see it at ALL but okay!
@@biancadesousa people like that are guilty by association
Yes!!! Thank you. I think so too!
i absolutely love this show but one very specific thing that bothered me was when Cam’s sister went to jail and he wanted Mitchell to write a letter requesting an early release and Mitchell couldn’t bring himself to do it but she got out anyways. the way Cam got mad at Mitchell for “letting his sister rot in that hell-hole” despite her being rightfully charged and not showing any remorse rubbed me the wrong way because given the history of the american prison system, this was an example of it actually working because SHE WAS GUILTY and didn’t deserve to get out!!! Cam was outta pocket and Mitchell was right to not write that letter
Was I the only one who thought haley should’ve ended up with andy
Nope
Probably one of the dumbest decisions the writers made.
Yes. He brought out the best in her. But it would push it a little too much since he acted a lot like her dad 😅
I think it was an actor dilemma thing
@@RoKer13 i honestly can't see the whole Phill and Andy being the same person thing. They did have similar interests but they were so different? I might be the only one who feels that way tho.
Anybody else found it uncomfortable that Alex was dating Luke's friend in that one season? Like when that happened she was in college and he was still in high school. (They sexualized Alex a lot as she got older the more I thought about it. Wtf was that about?)
she also always had a weird age gap with most of her boyfriends whether they were younger or older than her
Can we talk about how they sometimes feel like a whole family of Karens? They're downright vile to service workers on what feels like a regular basis
Yes it's a man that I'm done with that show that show was shit
The main problems
•racism
•emotional incest between gloria and manny
•actual incest jokes between (manny/haley) (manny/ Lilly) (manny/alex)
•literal negligence
•love phil but his fetish for black women
•lack of support for alex (irl she actually faced abuse from her own mother)
•JAY👺
omg yes the emotional incest...
I know this might not be actual incest but what made me most uncomfortable was the sexual tension between Claire and Manny.
i get what they were going for with manny being young and confused about this new family, but it was unnecessary to have those types of jokes. they did the same thing with joe there was an episode where he literally locked phil out of the house and tried to seduce claire??? there was also always weird tension between gloria and phil where he was clearly very attracted to her and no one ever really addressed it.
Lol you guys are just so sensitive
@@Goodfella-hr7tc and? lol
Quick rundown on my thoughts of the show.
-Gloria, Cam and Phil carried the show on their backs
-Jay deserves absolutely nothing. His beliefs and parenting skills pretty much broke Claire and Mitchel and he constantly belittles any member of the family that is a part of a minority. His hatred for Phil is tiring and I think it has to deal with how Phil doesn’t fit Jay’s “perfect” image, so I’m guessing that’s where Claire’s control issues come from.
-PROTECT LILY AT ALL COSTS. Scene stealer.
-Claire is funny as hell but really got on my nerves. Her control issues are really triggering to me and heavily remind me of trauma that I still have to face.
-Mitchel is literally me
-The writers are going to hell for ruining my girl Hailey.
-Alex deserved better
-Manny is also me but I don’t have that confidence he had.
And Luke is totally forgotten
Love Mitchell!! And wish they did a lot more with Alex because they just relegated her to being rude to her family at a lot of times and that was not fun
Omg Mitchell it’s literally me too! He’s my favorite. The way you forgot Luke 😆
Am I the only one who feels like Manny is such a pick me boy??
you should express yourself more respectful i think
I HATED the way the characters became caricatures and stupider as time went on. You can be a funny sitcom and still be smart with character development (like in Malcom in the Middle)
EXACTLYY it felt like the writers said "oh the audience likes the silly side of these characters? let's make their entire personality silly from now on!"
I know this show is supposed to be satire but some of the racist jokes… yeah some of those white writers are not seeing the pearly gates 💀 Claire Dunphy is PEAK white woman, like she was out here calling immigration on Gloria. Idk sometimes i’m out here side-eyeing Julie Bowen cause she played her a little too well…
Excuse me Claire did WHAT
no cause the ep when Claire was making fun of Gloria I was ready to go to war lmao
Claire gave us a peek into the life of a Karen
LITERALLY, I was just rewatching one of the Halloween episode (the one where half the plot is Jay mocking Gloria's accent) and Claire freaks out on the family because apparently they are "taking over the holidays" and "we have fireworks at Christmas now because that's what the Columbians do.
having a meltdown. because you have fireworks at Christmas. (side note that actually sounds like a really nice tradition to me??)
also she refers to Cam and Mitch as "the gays" which... just call them queers atp because we know that's what you really mean 😭
ALSO, they had Phil lowkey have a fetish for black women which was superrr weird
"Jay's decaying ass" 😭
The way I cackled at that part
Modern Family is really a comfort show for me, needed this video 😭
Her description of it, "perfect for background noise, but you'll still laugh", is PERFECT lmao
When Gloria said, “WHY cant you just get over this DEVASTATING HUMILIATION?!” To manny when he lost the election 💀
"who doesnt like Lily?" The writers/producers🤧🤧
haley and alex had such a good bond but it always reset after episode and im so mad!!!
GLORIA CARRIED THE SHOW
SHE SLAYED THEM
Remember that one episode where jay used manny to literally bully mitchell and never stopped and almost ruined the special thing that he and his son had just because he wanted manny and mitchell to have the same relationship he had with his brother
omg yes the astronomy thing!! the one where mitchell got sprayed by a skunk and had to wear a dress 😭
Modern family has Glee-isms where they’re like “oh we’re self aware” but they still do the same bad things over and over again. The way Mercedes always talks about being used to belt one note as the stereotypical fat black girl and they acknowledge that stereotype and KEEP DOING IT. I think modern family has that same issue when discussing race like Gloria or Lilly’s backgrounds. They acknowledge the family is being ignorant but never actually address it
Amanda idk how you feel about suggestions but id love to see you review "The Good Place". Even if you don't review it, its amazing and id suggest watching it on your own time if you already haven't. For a quick summary, its about a group of young adults who meet untimely deaths and navigate the afterlife together. Its very comedic, but also tacles philosophical questions and tries to get you to think. And for bonus points, it has diversity! (Love your earrings btw😍)

thank you for bringing this up cuz no one else seems to talk about it cuz i LOOOOVEEE lily and it's mostly cuz she's the only asian in the family and i just wanted to see her be treated like that instead of just a punching bag like "she's asian" "she has no emotions" " shes gonna kill her parents one day cuz she listens to metal". And it really disappointed me so much how she started to disappear ever since joe came into the show. I wished to see her relationship with gloria grow even more because gloria ADORED lily when she was younger. I wanted to see her have more playful banters with her cousin luke. I wanted to see her asking for boy advice or school advice from her cousins hailey and alex, especially since they used to always babysit her, her relationship with her cousins should be really close but we barely got any interactions between her and her cousins. Even during the dede's death episode cam told her "go comfort your cousins" like as if they forgot dede is lily's grandmother too and she just lost her grandmother. I wish they showed us more scenes of her with jay being soft to her like that episode where she was too upset to dance and jay went up on stage with her. They could've done so much more with lily but they just let her go. also wasnt lily suppose to be a smart kid who skipped a grade? why did in later seasons mitchell mention "she may not finish high school but she can hold her own at any tony party" like why the sudden low expectations of her academic life?
Omg exactly
Everything here!!!👏🏽👏🏽
In my opinion the reason Phil in universe made those "I hate my wife and kids" jokes early in the show is cause of jay. In my opinion he was mimicking jay to get his approval.
Honestly the root of most the shows issues is jay and how he never got therapy to unpack his bullshit
Why is nobody talking about how absolutely gorgeous Amanda looks yup 100% gunna draw her UwU

Her braids in this video are on another level
Sometimes I wonder if these characters are written with the intention of critiquing wealthy, upper class, white liberals. Cam and Mitch have racist behaviors that go unchecked because they have a Vietnamese daughter and Claire gives very much white woman girl boss energy.
The show was also mean to lesbians for no reason. In the earlier seasons Hayley would tell Alex she looked like a lesbian as a way to insult her choice of style. Cam and Mitch were constantly ragging on lesbians all throughout the series too
I was honestly waiting for the episode when Claire needed a project and joins a mlm because it just fits
Ong yes!!! Cam and Mitch really hated lesbians for no reason :///
I agree with you, they're all racist so I guess that's the purpose of the show
I really enjoyed the friendship between the lesbian couple (i cant remeeber there name for the life of me but i love there characters especially the blonde one) and as a lesbian myself and actually found in that first episode when lily and there kid had a play date and they where joking about lesbian stereotypes hillarious im not sure why but the comments abt the unfinished wood prodject and the vegaterian joke as a lesbian really funny
@@narcissismpeach the joke of them hating lesbians plays with expectations and also gave a glimpse into some relationships between lgbtq communities. Up until that point tv made it seem like gays don’t have any bias, any quirks, any prejudice themselves. I liked it because it showed a funny rivalry with a community we don’t ever see. After that I learned that’s how slot of gay men felt towards lesbians. I asked a coworker of mine (gay guy) what he thought about that and he said they’d real. “You never see gay guys hanging with lesbians. Bi…yes…les…barely”. I never thought of that but it made sense. i feel like it's ironic that jay had absolutely no character development. he stayed bigoted the entire time, and the people around him had to change. gloria and manny got used to him not accepting their culture, and had to fit his ideals. mitch and claire had to accept that he was a neglectful father and can't even talk to him about it because he constantly brushes it off. also with mitch, i don't fully remember the final seasons of the show but i'm assuming not much changed regarding jay's views on being gay. it was always kind of a moot point. and then there's of course phil. that man tried SO hard to get jay to like him or acknowledge that he won't be leaving any time soon, but yknow!!!
i know he's meant to be the "old racist white guy", but couldn't they have switched it up at all? yet he still gets praise for doing the bare minimum for any of them.
literally tho!! jay had barely had any character development and it's so sad how they just white-washed Joe like they never used his real name or taught him about Colombia bc jay just didn't want to when his son is literally half Colombian
@@nay_yy I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THIS. like gloria just wanted to name her new kid after her grandfather (i think?) and jay said no because... he couldnt pronounce it ?
@@nay_yy I honestly forgot Joe is part colombian because they never bring it up!
Seeing how proud Gloria is of her heritage I find it weird that she didn’t teach Joe more spanish and about her culture
Yaw get on my nerves. It’s like you don’t understand tv and character dynamics. He didn’t like Phil because he thought Phil was too invasive, too goofy, and the antithesis is Jay but they grew closer over the years and he did open up to liking actually liking Phil. I actually got tired of the same heartfelt moments they had which seemed to be every episode. “I always liked you I just …”…it got overplayed. So to hear that he never liked him or gave him a chance made no sense to me. Maybe you didn’t see it that because he still had his boundaries and didn’t warm up to him the way you’d like but that’s not the same as being mean. He didn’t give you what you wanted but that doesn’t mean he didn’t grow.
You want people to accept you for who you are but you never accept people for who they are if they don’t a line with your world view.
I don’t think he was racist as much as ignorant to things and had his own ideals. I don’t have a problem with ignorance because I don’t think everyone knows what I know. I respect his ideals because though some of the way he said things and did things he was lite hearted but flawed.
There’s no grace with baby boomer characters that aren’t liberal. They are just met with complete dismissal.
I know the worst racist thing in my opinion in modern family is cam in season 1 dressing up baby lily for the holidays and mitchell says "yea there was still martin luther king jr coming off in the tub" so cam literally put lily in blackface for mlk day
wow that i just realised that after reading your comment
and the whole ghetto fabulous thing where cam put lily in that afro wig
Modern Family is a comfort show for me. My favorite character was Phil. He seemed like such a kind, patient and goofy person. I always wanted someone like that in my life.
He’s what I always wanted in a dad, so it feels really good to watch and lowkey live vicariously through the characters
Unpopular opinion but was I the only one who felt uncomfortable with all the incestuous jokes, like when manny had a crush on haley, or the train episode with Alex like i know they’re not biologically related but still😕. Also when manny had Stockholm syndrome when Sonya kidnapped him. There are many more things of this sort it’s all just🤢🤢
SAMEEEE!! or the episode where claire x phil & mitch x cam got drunk, and Claire offered her eggs for mitch and cam. I was disgusted bc they were acc considering doing it
There was an episode in one of the later season where Joe had a crush on Claire and I was like what the heck they literally have the same dad that’s so weird 😬
@@444aurelie you know that’s a common medical practice. she wasn’t talking about sleeping with her brother dont worry
Also when little Joe had a crush on Claire and they never even mentioned to him that’s it’s wrong because they are half siblings like did they forget they are family?? They gave him a bunch of reasons but forgot to teach him the most important one. Don’t think about marrying family lmao
Yes and in general the whole sexualising of the kids. The racist, and the boomer jokes, dividing the girls into the clever one and the pretty one, just yawn. Some of the jokes seem sexist to me too, I just wonder about the writers of these things tbh.
at the end of alexs episode w/ the therapist when she does the closing narration i literally broke down crying. it is literally what inspired me to ask my parents for a therapist(even though they fucking said no)
i remember that during one of the few times i had cable as a child, i was watching this with my mom and things were fine until Gloria showed up. my mom gave this show the meanest look ive ever seen and asked me to change it lmfao
for context, my mom is a mexican immigrant (yes I know Gloria is Colombian) and speaks English with a thick accent (like Gloria).
I- don't understand.. is there something between Mexicans & Colombians?, Or.. was it the representation?
because of the representation??
@@aranza2744 I don't know, I asked @srna booz.
there’s a whole layer of gaslighting throughout modern family where one character is lying about something or trying to hide something and then convincing their partner that they’re crazy and paranoid for being suspicious (e.g. cam and mitchell)
Cam is THE archetype for a manipulative covert narcissist. Seriously, if you want to learn how to manipulate people take some notes. The gaslighting, the pity traps, the attention seeking...it's actually unsetteling.
I love the little alliance that Cam, Gloria, and Phil have! And Claire is insufferable to me . I love this series and all your vids btw, Amanda!
Someone in your comments said you should do everything wrong with Total drama island 😂😂 I really want that to happen
yessss omg yessssss
Omg I would be so down for that
yesss
There was not an episode where Gloria didn’t fix something for someone, she held the family together. Also I wish they would’ve given Lily a personality that wasn’t just a Alex/Haley in the first five season mix. Also Haley should’ve ended up with Andy because Andy was Phil 2.0, Dylan should’ve been left in the dust.
My favorite character is Lily.. and my favorite house is the Tucker/Pritchett house. The way Cam and Mitchell roll their eyes into the camera when one of them says something ridiculous is my favorite.
As a Latino from Chile, I loved Gloria, her story, her accent and everything so unapologetically Latina of her.
The one moment the show made me bawl was when she said something along the lines of " can you imagine how hard it is to translate everything and make sense" it's so realistic and beautiful.
Also, I doubt you are reading this Amanda, but Shameless is one of the best shows. It's nasty, racist, homophobic and chauvinistic in all the best ways, but so good for almost all of the eleven seasons (6-9) are meh. But I love it and TOTALLY RECOMEND IT.
I love Shameless, I almost stop watching when Fiona left but Ian and Mickey kept me watching
Hell yea shameless is such a good show.
Ok but Mitch and Cam’s Wedding was a moment
the violin cover of “home” will never not make me emotional
I bawled
Luke was my favourite, until he got older. They ruined his character; in the beginning he was hilarious, and his line delivery felt real. Skip forward to the last 4-5 seasons and every line feels forced. The writing for his character went from funny and brilliant to horrid and hard to watch.
RIGHT ‼️ i feel like they just kept forgetting about his character & doing whatever it was so sad
i feel that can be attributed to his actor a bit too. luke’s actor is literally a genius. he is in MENCA. he may have grown tired of playing an idiot and delivered his lines off
Alex actually does have some development like when she’s sitting in the car with Jay talking about her future and when Phil came to visit her at school, but they could have done sm more
also in the early seasons Claire (surprise surprise) makes an Islamophobic comment and generalisation of Arab people, its in the episode where she's setting up that school dance with Gloria
There is a lot of xenophobia and ( small parts of racism) in the show I keep getting surprised by the comments and how they somehow got away with it :(
@Queen queen Gloria suggests the dance should have an "Arabian nights theme" and Claire says "isn't it a little too soon", referencing 9/11 thus those "all Arabs are terrorists" disgusting stereotypes
@@gen7576 That's a fresh take. I never thought about it like that. I always thought she meant it was too soon bc of the children's age. Saying Arabian nights is more of a mature theme? But this makes way way more sense. Thx.
OMG!!! I honestly thought I was the only one who picked up on Claire’s snarky comment. When I rewatched the ep and saw her saying that I despised her since.
Amanda u brought back up some repressed emotions... The Alex therapy episode had me in tears.. hell I'm tearing up now 😥😭😭😭
I related so much to episode I think the whole family does Alex so dirty
I think there were so many people represented in Alex and it sucks that they did a poor job at taking her character to new places especially showing her as human
Always makes me cry when she breaks down to Claire
I relate so much to her
That little boy saying "i do" in that clip was so funny 😭😭
Amanda really blessing us with all these uploads
this is hands down the best sitcom ive ever watched so im excited to see your opinions
Not me being in sync with Amanda I was literally just watching this show just now 😌
Same i just finished season 8
I love Modern Family, I lost the count on how many times I've watched it but there is an episode that I always skip, the one with the Nigerian family (Marco Polo?) . For me it is unforgivable the lazy writing and lack of research. Loved the video btw
YES!!! THANK YOUUUUU
THANK YOU! SOMEBODY FINALLY IS TALKING ABOUT THAT ONE! I thought I was the only one thinking about that.
Meeeeeee tooooo
My mental health needed a video from Amanda today, love you!
as a side note: this hair color is so beautiful on you 😩 can’t get over it
My bone to pick with Jay and any Jay characters in all the other sitcoms is racism and homophobia isn’t cute and funny it’s hurtful and makes me sick to watch as a queer Latinx person. Love Gloria tho she’s a queen and deserves better👏👏
Exactly! So much on the humor is how unamerican or not gender conforming some member is being. It's not just to the minority characters. So yeah progresive but just because all other sitcomes were worse with this
If Claire didn’t exist, Gloria should be with Phil. Phil might have a hot on her on so many occasions but he’s respectful and never make fun of who she is.
You guys are so sensitive
@@Goodfella-hr7tc you literally sound like Jay and that is the point
@@PeriodicalMusic it's better to be like him rather than a crybaby like you
NOO IM LITERALLY RE WATCHING MODERN FAMILY LOLL AND I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH.
Phill is my comfort character
Omg as an asian kid that grew up watching this show. I feel so disappointed how Mitch and cam treat Lilly and they always use asian ppl to make stereotypes jokes which is not funny whatsoever. I told my friend. They told me I’m overeating .
No I agree. I'm white but while watching the show on many occasions I was kinda like 'um okay' with some of the racist jokes relating to lily. They basically played into every stereotype too.
@@sophiahannebery7774 ikr and they don't even try to make it right. they just let the joke slip because it's "funny" and not harmful to (white) ppl.
same, i expressed my frustration on the modern family subreddit and i was met with “youre overreacting” type of comments
They treat her like shit
If your friends are white that’s probably why they think you are overreacting . It’s because white people tend to be more ignorant to what POC go through
your point about how it’s so good because the core characters stayed is so true. i could think of so many shows where it got bad as soon as one or two characters left. imagine if grey’s anatomy kept cristina, alex, georgie and izzie with meredith and their journey through residenancy to doctors. it would’ve been amazing. but no shonda had to start beef with like half the cast
This show has no expiration date! I can literally watch it everyday and not get tired, it’s such a go-to.
LITERALLY SAME- i've watched modern family like 12 times but not once have i watched the finale, and i don't think I ever will.
As a Gay man, I noticed that Mitch and Cam are literally the only ones that do the pedo jokes like they are talking to a kid and the conversation sounds pedo, but it's totally not (and that's the joke). I Love Modern Family but sometimes i cringe xD
anyone else got the vibe that mitch and cam are/ were homophobic to lesbians??? I swear there was a couple of remarks/digs in the show about them hating on lesbians and that never sat right with me :/
especially the episode where they met the lesbians at lily's kindergarten! Cam was so disrespectful
that bothered me deeply and i also feel like there were homophobic undertones towards gay men themselves with the way mitchell especially treated cameron's flamboyance or their friends.
im sorry you feel that way, but thats how their characters were written😭
also ik this probably makes me sound like a bitch, but one of those lesbians was so mean to mitch and cam it hurt
Sometimes i dont get how youre a pre med student (alr graduated ik) but got so much time to make YT commentary, watch tv shows (MULTIPLE TIMES), read books, etc????
she must be able to go off of like 2 hours sleep a night bc otherwise idk how she can get so much done 😭
extreme time management learned from being a med student ig
EVERYTHING WRONG WITH MODERN FAMILY WE WON!!
Alex should have been a lesbian I am not elaborating
there was like a whole 3 episodes they had with a lesbian couple that were nothing but gross stereotypes, so maybe it was a blessing at the end of the day 😭
Yes
Watching the first time around I wanted this but when I watched it a little older I wanted them to make Haley the lesbian or at least not straight. I feel like having Alex be gay isn’t as interesting because she was kind of turned off from dating for a while and she wasn’t super feminine whereas if they had Haley it could’ve made it more interesting esp since she used to make fun of Alex for looking like a lesbian
i thought it was so weird that modern family was all about being progressive and were so proud about having mitch and cam be gay representation but none of the kids had any struggle with sexuality or gender identity besides manny getting made fun of for acting stereotypically gay. i feel like it would have been so cool and impactful if mitch and cam could help one of their nieces or nephews come to terms with being gay/bi/lesbian/anything other than straight. the could have had haley hook up with a girl while drunk and have a crisis about it or see alex have a crush on a female professor. definitely a missed opportunity in my opinion.
My unpopular opinion: I cant stand cam, his whole plot line for so many epsidoes were hes emotional so we cant tell him some family business
He's so manipulative
EXACTLYY. Cam was constantly gaslighting mitchell
Aside from Phil being THE WORLDS BEST FATHER, I think the casting for Phil was also perfect, cuz I cant see anyone exude Phil better than Ty Burell
I loved Modern Family, Gloria carried the entire show.
Gloria, Phil and Haley carried the show
ill be honest every time i hear someone else say its a comfort show for them it makes me so happy cuz someone else understands!!!
Also another point that the show kind of hammer the idea that marriage is kinda of the conclusion of every relationship which is not necessarily a bad thing but why we never saw a couple ending up together without getting married
phil and gloria's friendship was **chefs kiss**
also they were the best characters imo
Cameron felt like the epitome of a Karen. He exhibits so much xenophobia towards his own daughter Lily. I’ll never forget how in one episode, he kept laughing while doing Lily’s nails to the point where she says she’ll just do her own… his reply was “it’s just funny how the roles are reversed”. After seeing that, I’ve noticed so much that he does towards her…
I do like the show but something that didn't sit right with me on my last re-watch aside from the casual racism, homophobia, etc...was the slight classism it seemed to project. I get it's just a show, no big deal kind of thing but all the families on that show definitely had more upper middle class - rich people problems that I feel aren't as relatable to the majority of people who watch the show. And yeah, they had money problems here & there but not to the point where they almost lost their home or were behind on bills or couldn't afford food. I'm not saying they should've been super poor but at least slightly struggle with money more often or something.
