In this video I show you how to play Ed's riffs and parts from Red Zone/Act Like it Hurts. You can find a few different takes of this unreleased demo. There's a nod to Cactus' "Evil" riff that is also in "Amsterdam."
PDF of my transcription: drive.google.c...
The tuning is a little tricky, because it's a little sharper than Eb standard, and you have to contend with Ed's tempered tuning.

Thanks for the video and showing the tab at the end. Awesome job
Thank you. I'm glad when someone like you finds these.
these videos are a gift from god, man. so glad your transcribing them for those who can't learn by ear (like me)
so many good songs in demos (or outright didn't get demo'd at all) which never saw the light of day
any chance you could do the solos and fills in down in flames? that song never got a demo but it's my all time favorite vh song
That's great to hear. I was hoping there would be people out there that would appreciate what's contained in these, but I didn't know for sure.
I was going to take a short break from doing the Ed vids to try to diversify a little. I'll definitely do more.
Songs like Down in Flames I started to avoid because I found if the audio was already pretty rough, it would sound pretty bad in the final video after getting digitally compressed. Is there a (somewhat) decent recording of that song?
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet unfortunately none have surfaced yet, the best quality version is live in japan (i believe nagoya or shinjuku), which has pretty rough audio
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet i found a decently high quality version of down in flames, may be the highest quality one out there, it's at the june 22 '78 show in tokyo
That recording is awesome! I'm on it.
Hey I just saw your comment on your other video, I just wanted to learn the main riff and solo for main squeeze
Ok-cool. You're the second person to mention that one, so maybe it's gotta happen. It might be a bit later though because I have the next few chosen and I'm working on them.
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet all good take your time. Even though main squeeze and red zone are basically the same song but with a few differences I feel like I liked main squeeze better because it just felt more upbeat
What kind of guitar is this you’re playing? I want one. Lol
Great vid as always
All of the guitars that I've played in these videos so far I made. I'd like to make a video of a build from scratch (or something like that) sometime in the future.
Very cool - thanks!
Thank you-you're welcome!
it still kills me that this song wasn’t released on WACF. i don’t get it man!
great video bruh
Thanks!
Yeah, I feel like that about several songs. They should have made a double album at some point.
I noticed recently that Ed used a part of Red Zone in "Get Up" at 2:43.
Cool. Subbed
Wow; awesome job!
Cool-thanks!
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet You bet. There are so many great unreleased tunes from VH. I was just listening to Just Like You Wanted and Show No Mercy. Those should have been on an album!
I just checked out Just Like You Wanted. That's cool, I hadn't heard that one.
Yeah, there's always great riffs in the songs they didn't use. Eyes of the Night or She's the Woman come to mind.
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet Yeah; thats a great tune. Show No Mercy is another one I like a lot. The intro they used on Take Me back from Balance. That solo is blistering. I hear there is a lot more we have yet to hear.
As far as full tunes go could I request She's the Woman from the Zero Demo. Thanks for these awesome transcriptions.
Thank you!
She's the Woman is one of my all-time favorite VH tunes. I might want to do the Warner Bros demo version though because I can get those to sound a little better. Is there something about the Zero version that you prefer?
No, nothing I prefer. The Zero version is the only version I've heard. Just a super cool song. It really blew me away the first time I heard it. With a lot of the demo work showing up on later albums, I'm surprised She's the Woman never showed up later. Thanks for the work.@@JimbosGuitarPlanet
Ok, cool. Check this version out: th-cam.com/video/1QQQrv4lCa0/w-d-xo.html
It's pretty close to the sound of the albums. I can't believe they didn't use it either, but if they did Mean Street might not have happened.
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet Cool. I'll check it out. Thanks again.
thanks, great trabscritpion
Cool-thanks!
Nice! Can you transcribe ‘Believe Me’?
Thanks!
Another commenter mentioned "Believe Me" too, and found me a better recording than the rough one I kept finding. As long as I can hear what Ed's playing, I'll give it a whirl.
Thank you.!
Oh yeah, you're the guy that requested this one. I hope it helps, it was fun to do.
@@JimbosGuitarPlanet I’m so glad for this
I’ve asked every Van Halen tuber I know
And you deliver and followed through better than I could’ve thought
And the tabs 💯👌
Thank you.
Obviously you gained a sub
That's great! Thanks for letting me know you found it and for the positive comments.
Could you do Get this show on the road
That's a good one. That's on my list.
could you maybe do the intro to “eyes of the night”?
It's up:

Do you have a lesson for the solo?
I skipped the solo for a few reasons. It's not the kind of thing I would normally try to transcribe and learn, I would just wing it. For a video I don't think I would be able to recreate the sound without enough volume to get some feedback. I also think I've heard him play a more definitive solo on a different take.
